There's something special about desert light, and this captivating Joshua Tree retreat is the perfect place to observe it. The sunsets are visible from the outdoor Jacuzzi or cooling cowboy tub, while the mirrored dome in the garden was designed with stargazing in mind. It's clear as soon as you arrive that your hosts, Cherish and Ramon, have put a lot of effort into the interiors of the home, and they've bestowed it with a certain rustic desert charm that's hard to pinpoint. Of course, it doesn't hurt that you can step directly out onto the deck in the cool of the morning and watch the desert critters scurrying around before they're forced to retreat from the heat of the day. If you want to head off for the day, the west entrance to Joshua Tree National Park is only two miles away, your gateway to almost 800,000 acres of mystic desert. Your hosts also provide two eclectic bikes that you can use to pedal your way across the desert.

Wild Rocks is one of those homes that always appears effortlessly chic. Designed by Oller & Pejic, it’s an architectural gem set against Yucca Valley’s rugged desert terrain. The sliding glass doors blur the lines between the inside and outside, allowing you to enjoy home-cooked meals on the terrace, gaze at the stars, and relax in the hot tub. We also loved the enormous record collection, which features some of the host Joann’s all-time favourite tunes. Found just a short drive from Joshua Tree National Park, there are plenty of exciting adventures waiting for you.

A hilltop cabin in a unique area of the desert, this place is nestled on its own between Pioneertown and Yucca Valley on what feels like the scenic drive through Joshua Tree National Park. The trees, rocks, and landscape just outside the doors are just as breathtaking as anything you would see in the park, except you have them all to yourself. 

There’s a wood-burning stove to keep you warm on those chill nights, while one of your musically talented friends can play a tune on the grand piano (though there’s also a Bluetooth sound system, for convenience). On the walls, you’ll find original art by the late Gerald Zeldin, and an interior so impressive it was featured in the NY Times fashion section. You can feel the history of this old mining cabin in the wood-beamed ceiling and clapboard (yet modern)  bathroom. Picture-frame windows let the sunlight stream into this boho-chic interior and let you gaze out over the endless desert before you.

This place is totally off-grid and once you’ve experienced the unique feeling of heating the outdoor hot tub with firewood as you gaze at the stars, there’s no going back.

Take the half-hour drive to Joshua Tree National Park, and don't forget to take your camera with you – we can vouch for the sublime vistas.

Inside, glorious vintage Moroccan textiles cover the floors, while the art is provided by artists that host Denise represents in her art gallery. Architectural accents also lurk behind every corner – we especially loved the exposed beams and Mission-style plaster. The outdoors of the property are wild and isolated and will appeal to the adventurous and those craving solitude. Steps have been taken to tame the wilderness in ways that inspire relaxation, such as the outdoor bathtub, shower, plunge-pool, and many hammocks.

This Joshua Tree home is a gorgeous piece of modern architecture, set in over an acre of land in the middle of the desert. It offers great access to the park, as well as other hiking trails, and while you shouldn’t ignore that, the home is a destination in itself. The views of the landscape are probably the first things that you’ll notice, and with good reason. On top of that, pools, hot tubs, and fire pits aren’t unusual in and around Joshua Tree, but rarely do you come across examples that have so much style. Each amenity fits within the aesthetic of the larger home in a deliberate, measured way and a dedicated hospitality concierge is on hand to help you arrange anything you may want or need. We can go on to list more features, but even that wouldn’t capture the grandeur of the home. Relaxing beside the pool as the sun sets or swapping stories around the fire pit under the stars are the kind of experiences you won’t forget in a hurry.

As soon as you step through the door of this renovated 1960s house, you know you’ve found something pretty special. With a dazzling desert setting and an interior that could grace the cover of a glossy magazine, it’s not your average home. The vibe is mid-century meets cowgirl, with macrame wall hangings, folky raffia, battered leather and buffalo horns. The living space is centred around a vast sheepskin that’s like walking on a cloud, and the full width glass doors pull back completely, blurring the line between inside and out. And you’ll definitely want to spend lots of time outside – the views are spectacular. Days here pass by like a dream, hiking through the rugged landscapes of Joshua Tree National Park, or exploring the artsy town, before coming back to your oasis for a soak in the saltwater hot tub. A mid-century masterpiece with personality to spare, this home hidden away in the desert is a spectacular stay. Every room here has been curated as if it were a museum, and many of the vintage trinkets and treasures belong to the home's owner, celebrated designer Julia Chasman. The living room is the heart of the buzz, warm and rich thanks to the striking orange-red woodburner, old piano, Art Deco lampshades and ikat rugs. And the outside is just as much as a masterpiece as the inside.
