Wild Rocks is one of those homes that always appears effortlessly chic. Designed by Oller & Pejic, it’s an architectural gem set against Yucca Valley’s rugged desert terrain. The sliding glass doors blur the lines between the inside and outside, allowing you to enjoy home-cooked meals on the terrace, gaze at the stars, and relax in the hot tub. We also loved the enormous record collection, which features some of the host Joann’s all-time favourite tunes. Found just a short drive from Joshua Tree National Park, there are plenty of exciting adventures waiting for you.

Wild Rocks

An architect's eye has been turned to this Yucca Valley getaway, which pops out of the desert in clean lines, stamped textiles, and potted plants. The home, which belongs to a local activist and artist, is an oasis of cool; white walls, hanging lights, and reclaimed wooden furniture are the name of the game here, while a monochrome, metro-tiled bathroom is perfect for soaking or scrolling up your Instagram feed. The real draw here, however, is the incredible location. When we say you're out in nature, we really mean it. Reached by a sandy dirt track, it feels as wild as the desert landscape that surrounds it. Relax in the cowboy-style tub during the day or explore the two acres of Joshua Tree forest or Joshua Tree National Park (a twenty-five-minute drive away), before setting up camp for the night. With little light pollution, the starry sky is clearer out here than ever – whether you're gathered around the fire pit, sat under the fairy light-strewn canopy or ogling constellations through the telescope, it's a sanctuary of peace, solitude and natural beauty. 

Palo Verde's Bloom

Set in two acres of private desert landscape, this bijou cabin is a place to unwind and let the rush of modern life slip away. In the rugged landscape surrounding this home, you’ve got a hot tub and macrame hammocks sitting beneath the big desert sky. Out favourite spot to watch the sunset is the ‘moon bench’ and once the sky has speckled with stars its time to get a fire crackling in the white-plaster fire pit and look for shooting stars.

Inside, you can feel that the hosts have poured their heart and soul into the decor, where crisp walls are adorned with object d’art in every desert hue. Furniture is vintage and hand-picked, and there’s a record player to curate the perfect soundtrack to your desert escape. The kitchen has all the essentials, and the selection of ceramic crockery feels as though each mug and plate has been considered.

If you want to get out and explore, Joshua Tree town is a twenty-minute drive and the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park is just beyond for endless desert and mountain hiking trails.  

Moonstone Mesa

Escape to this remote studio sanctuary and reconnect with mother nature. This is more than just an unpretentious cabin in the desert – this is a home that invites you to let go of life's complications and to instead find your roots in nature and embrace the bear necessities – pretty much in keeping with the Joshua Tree area surrounding it. Inside the design is simple with hand-dyed indigo bedding and touches of local art – the sleek desert motif is clear, and a perfect complement to adventures and hikes in the natural landscape all around. Take the half-hour drive to Joshua Tree National Park, and don't forget to take your camera with you – we can vouch for the sublime vistas. 

The Chaparral Oasis

Blissfully detached from reality, this home springs up in the wild Californian desert like a mirage. The interior of this pueblo-style home has been rehauled with a discerning eye. Enjoy the wood-burning fireplace, plush designer sofa, and sleek outfitted kitchen. Large French doors open the living area onto the desert landscape, where you can admire the mountains and cacti from your shady perch on the couch. This Joshua Tree home is a gorgeous piece of modern architecture, set in over an acre of land in the middle of the desert. It offers great access to the park, as well as other hiking trails, and while you shouldn’t ignore that, the home is a destination in itself. The views of the landscape are probably the first things that you’ll notice, and with good reason. On top of that, pools, hot tubs, and fire pits aren’t unusual in and around Joshua Tree, but rarely do you come across examples that have so much style. Each amenity fits within the aesthetic of the larger home in a deliberate, measured way and a dedicated hospitality concierge is on hand to help you arrange anything you may want or need. We can go on to list more features, but even that wouldn’t capture the grandeur of the home. Relaxing beside the pool as the sun sets or swapping stories around the fire pit under the stars are the kind of experiences you won’t forget in a hurry.

Inside, glorious vintage Moroccan textiles cover the floors, while the art is provided by artists that host Denise represents in her art gallery. Architectural accents also lurk behind every corner – we especially loved the exposed beams and Mission-style plaster. The outdoors of the property are wild and isolated and will appeal to the adventurous and those craving solitude. Steps have been taken to tame the wilderness in ways that inspire relaxation, such as the outdoor bathtub, shower, plunge-pool, and many hammocks.

Merchant House High Desert

A hilltop cabin in a unique area of the desert, this place is nestled on its own between Pioneertown and Yucca Valley on what feels like the scenic drive through Joshua Tree National Park. The trees, rocks, and landscape just outside the doors are just as breathtaking as anything you would see in the park, except you have them all to yourself. 

There’s a wood-burning stove to keep you warm on those chill nights, while one of your musically talented friends can play a tune on the grand piano (though there’s also a Bluetooth sound system, for convenience). On the walls, you’ll find original art by the late Gerald Zeldin, and an interior so impressive it was featured in the NY Times fashion section. You can feel the history of this old mining cabin in the wood-beamed ceiling and clapboard (yet modern)  bathroom.
