High up on a bluff in Malibu with some of the best far-reaching views of Southern California is this estate perfect for an extravagant retreat or destination wedding. Aside from the endless indoor-outdoor spaces to entertain at this home, its major highlights for us were the two grand pianos and a fully equipped recording studio that are all perfect for a professional rock-star, talent in the making, or a simple music enthusiast who wants to soak up the California creative vibe. For a celebrity-style event, tents are situated nearest the sea on the home’s ten sweeping acres. If it’s just a luxurious Malibu experience you have in mind, the pool and other endless amenities are not too shabby.

While the decor is beautiful, there’s something to be said about the home’s three balconies and lush gardens. Sunbathe in the privacy of one balcony, before enjoying an afternoon cocktail by the fire pit on another. Sunsets aren’t to be missed here – the panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean are unmatched. Come dinnertime, the barbecue is ready to be fired up for a delicious feast. Or, let a private chef take the reins while you put your feet up with a glass of wine. 

When you want to explore, there’s something for everyone here, from hiking, to lounging on the beach, to heading into the city. You’re just steps away from the turquoise Malibu coastline. Or, head to Surfrider beach – a five-minute drive away – where you can try out surfing, kayaking, and windsurfing. If you fancy some of the city life, Beverly Hills is just a twenty-five-minute drive away. There, you can visit trendy restaurants and shop til you drop. There are also plenty of wine tours in the area, and Malibu Wine Hikes offers something different. Within twenty-four minutes from home, you can either hike or hop on a 4x4 through the ranch, spotting animals, learning about the history of the vineyards and of course, tasting lots of wine.

When presented with a view of such beauty, the only response that can really do it justice is 'wow'. That was our reaction as we stood on one of the home's many balconies and gazed out at the endless Pacific Ocean. You don't even have to head outside to take in this stunning panorama, thanks to the huge floor-to-ceiling windows that take up most of the walls. With your attention naturally drawn away from the home, it might take you a moment before you can appreciate just how well the interior has been put together. The cleansing white living area and handsome wood-panelled kitchen are both boosted by a collection of impressive accoutrements, including an inbuilt Bose sound system, Miele cooking appliances and a Jacuzzi bathtub. A little more low-key but no less appreciated are three sea kayaks and fishing poles that are also available for guests to use. To reach the beach, all you have to do is descend the stairs, pass the home's deck with alfresco dining area and hey presto, you're there. Countless hours of fun await, whether you're atop the waves or out exploring Santa Monica, which is less than a quarter of an hour's drive away.

If you’re looking for panoramic ocean views, look no further. The vistas from this Malibu home’s floor-to-ceiling glass windows are stunning, as you can see. We love the main bedroom with its private terrace and marble en-suite bathroom. Outside, there’s a large sofa set around a fire pit, a ping pong table and a Jacuzzi for watching the sunset. And of course, Malibu Beach is just steps away. This home is located in south Malibu close to some excellent restaurants, shops and attractions. We would love to start every morning with a coffee on the terrace overlooking the sea as the sun shines down upon it before heading to the beach for the day – reachable in just eleven minutes by car.

As well as stunning views and great proximity to some of Southern California’s most famous beaches, this area also offers great hiking trails, fantastic restaurants, and even shopping, so there’s plenty on offer for every kind of traveller. Or, if you would rather have a more relaxing break, then lounge in the Californian sunshine, breath in the fresh air and admire the nature and views all around you. 

After a busy day, why not dine together with the bi-fold doors of the living room wide open so you can truly appreciate the panoramic views on offer as the sun sets over the sea. Then, on chilly evenings, snuggle up in front of the fire or indulge in a relaxing bath in the main bedroom’s en-suite, which also showcases ocean vistas to enjoy while you soak.

Beautiful Malibu escapes don’t get much better than this. With incredible views of the Pacific Ocean, this summery home is the perfect beach house. It’s just one block away from popular La Costa beach, so you can spend every day on the soft sand, working on your tan and splashing in the surf. Just off the Pacific Coast Highway, this home is in a fantastic location for LA adventures. It takes twenty minutes to drive to Santa Monica, and thirty minutes to reach Beverly Hills. 

The house itself is gorgeous. Huge windows let light flood in and ensure that those stunning sea views become part of the decor. You can happily spend hours just gazing out at the ocean. Everything you need is to hand here, and it’s a great space for families – the kitchen and dining space set-up is perfect for cooking up a storm and sharing meals with loved ones. Whip up a feast, grill up some goodies on the barbecue, or order in from one of the fantastic restaurants nearby – our vote goes for Nobu. If you're musically inclined, you'll also be happy to hear that there's a piano in this home.

Of course, this is a beach house, so you’ll likely spend most of your time outside. In the garden you’ll find a Jacuzzi and some sun loungers – you can really relax here. We also love the terrace off the master bedroom. You’ll wake up to the sea breeze, and be able to head straight outside to drink in those views.

When you have an ocean view at your disposal, the best homes really make the most of it and that's certainly true of this property overlooking the Malibu coastline. Big windows make the interior feel bright and airy, while there's also a gorgeous deck area from which to savour the panorama of endless blue. This space comes with a comfy lounge area arranged around a firepit and an alfresco dining setup complete with a barbecue, so guests really can spend each and every hour of the day breathing in the salty sea air. Just around the side of the home, there's a small green where you can practice your putting. Back inside, we also loved the Japanese-style round bathtub — ideal for washing off the sand after a day at the seaside. And you won't be short of options, with La Costa Beach only seven minutes' walk away. Even closer to the home — about a minute's walk, in fact — is Duke's bar and restaurant, which serves Hawaiian-inspired cuisine with similarly stunning ocean vistas.

Wild Rocks is one of those homes that always appears effortlessly chic. Designed by Oller & Pejic, it’s an architectural gem set against Yucca Valley’s rugged desert terrain. The sliding glass doors blur the lines between the inside and outside, allowing you to enjoy home-cooked meals on the terrace, gaze at the stars, and relax in the hot tub. We also loved the enormous record collection, which features some of the host Joann’s all-time favourite tunes. Found just a short drive from Joshua Tree National Park, there are plenty of exciting adventures waiting for you.

Built in 1972 and now looked after by your lovely hosts, Jenna and Michael,  this woodlands home is a wonderfully minimalist yet cosy cabin tucked into the foothills of Los Padres National Park. Your hosts have lovingly created a space that invites you to relax, recuperate and engage in creative projects for a vacation you won't soon forget. They've even gathered a series of recipes from professional chefs, developed specifically for the cabin. Filled with original works of art and surrounded by mountains, this lodge is a haven for those that need to get away from the everyday hustle and bustle. It welcomes four guests looking to spend a few days appreciating crackling fires, home-cooked meals and all that nature has to offer in this breathtaking part of California. Neatly tucked into the edge of Sugarloaf, you'll find yourself amongst the stunning scenery of the San Bernadino Mountains, its magnificent hiking trails, abundance of wildlife, and just a short way from the beautiful, fish-filled Big Bear Lake. Still, you'll also be close to the shops, restaurants and bars in the town of Sugarloaf. So, if you're after an escape to nature without having to give up on great local amenities, then The Log Cab-Inn is an excellent choice.

If the interiors of this minimalist home appear to have jumped straight out of the pages of a glossy magazine, you’re not far off. This home, designed by Palmer and Kriesel is hidden away in a Palm Springs cul-de-sac and has previously graced the pages of the New York Times. Homage to all things mid-century, with Eames chairs, Nelson lamps and a vintage Malm fireplace in the master bedroom.

We were wowed by the open living area, designed with socialising in mind and with great views of the backyard. Out in the garden, reclining by the shimmering turquoise pool is the perfect way to unwind, but if you need to take your relaxing to the next level, there’s also a hot tub to bubble the night away in. Dine alfresco under the endless desert sky, then end the evening around the flickering fire pit with a glass of something strong as the sun sets behind the mountains.

When you want to venture out, downtown Palm Springs is only a five-minute drive away, and Joshua Tree National Park, roughly an hour away, is a must-see for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Visit The Palm Springs Art Museum, an eight-minute drive away which features complex sculptures, glassworks, and photographs by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol and Diane Arbus.

With a dedicated desk space too, you’ll have no trouble catching up on work, but with countless shared facilities to enjoy within your building's grounds, we recommend less work and more play.

Head to the on-site gym for a morning workout or stake your claim on one of the outdoor bicycle machines before making a beeline for the shared pool. While away hours taking refreshing dips in its waters or bask under the sun on one of the countless deck chairs on the communal lawn. With shared lounge rooms boasting a pool table, shuffleboard, fireplaces and giant screens, as well as several courtyards inviting games of foosball and ping pong and alfresco barbecues, you’ll be entertained from dawn till dusk. 

Outside of your home, you’ve got plenty to see and do too – spend an afternoon swimming and surfing at Newport Beach (a fifteen-minute drive away) or explore the seaside resort city of Laguna Beach (a twenty-two-minute drive). A hilltop cabin in a unique area of the desert, this place is nestled on its own between Pioneertown and Yucca Valley on what feels like the scenic drive through Joshua Tree National Park. The trees, rocks, and landscape just outside the doors are just as breathtaking as anything you would see in the park, except you have them all to yourself. 

There’s a wood-burning stove to keep you warm on those chill nights, while one of your musically talented friends can play a tune on the grand piano (though there’s also a Bluetooth sound system, for convenience). On the walls, you’ll find original art by the late Gerald Zeldin, and an interior so impressive it was featured in the NY Times fashion section. You can feel the history of this old mining cabin in the wood-beamed ceiling and clapboard (yet modern)  bathroom. Picture-frame windows let the sunlight stream into this boho-chic interior and let you gaze out over the endless desert before you.

This place is totally off-grid and once you’ve experienced the unique feeling of heating the outdoor hot tub with firewood as you gaze at the stars, there’s no going back.

If hiking and seeing stunning views are more your thing, head to Joshua Tree National Park, which is just under an hour away and offers spectacular natural wonders as you hike through the blended ecosystems of the Mojave and Colorado deserts. Finally, retreat to your private patio area for an intimate moment watching the stars sparkling up above.

Go to bed after watching the spectacular sunset over the Pacific and wake up to the sound of the crashing waves at this jaw-dropping beachfront home in the surfside city of San Clemente. 

Contemporary coastal cool is the order of the day, with plenty of light wood, fresh blue furnishings and pristine white walls, all accentuated by the sunlight that pours in 342 days a year through large windows and retractable glass doors that look out over the ocean.

There's plenty of space for all the family, with large open living spaces, a stunning modern kitchen with eye-catching quartz worktops, a dedicated games room with a billiards table, plus a lovely office to make the idea of working while on holiday a little more palatable. 

Sleeping arrangements are taken care of across five spacious bedrooms. A large loft room packed with games and a console allows you to leave the kids to it as you enjoy a glass of something cold out on the covered terrace, or lay out on a lounger on the promontory pointing out to sea.

If the call of the ocean proves too much, you won't have to walk far to access Lost Winds beach below. With consistent surf, volleyball courts, and the opportunity to jog or cycle along the 2.6-mile beach trail, there's plenty on offer here. However, seasoned surfers might want to check out nearby breaks including Trestles, T Street and San Onofre. Lowers (at Trestles beach) is the best of the bunch and the home of high performance surfing. Sometimes it's best just to sit back and marvel at the pros.

After a day of adrenaline-pumping activity, cooking may well be the last thing on your mind. Handily, San Clemente is home to a wide array of restaurants serving everything from American comfort food, farm-to-table fare and creative Mexican classics washed down with a mescal.
