In the morning, you’ll wake up feeling refreshed from a great night’s sleep in one of the cheerful bedrooms. Take your coffee out onto the terrace and plan your day. Will you dive right into the pool and spend the day out in the garden? It’s ever so tempting – there’s something for everyone, whether you plan on soaking up the sun, relaxing in the hot tub or floating in the pool gazing up at the mountains. You might fire up the barbecue for lunch and dine alfresco on the terrace. 

If you fancy exploring further afield, you might like to drive fifteen minutes to Indian Canyons. There are excellent trails for hiking, as well as horseback riding. Golfers might head instead to Escena Golf Club – it’s seven minutes away. In the evening, drive eight minutes to Downtown Palm Springs and choose from the restaurants and bars.

We're big fans of this Palm Springs pad. The single-level layout is ideal for guests with limited mobility, while the pops of colour and mid-century touches compliment the otherwise simple design – we think it works well with the area's retro aesthetic. We were wowed by the open living area, designed with socialising in mind and with great views of the backyard. Out in the garden, reclining by the shimmering turquoise pool is the perfect way to unwind, but if you need to take your relaxing to the next level, there’s also a hot tub to bubble the night away in. Dine alfresco under the endless desert sky, then end the evening around the flickering fire pit with a glass of something strong as the sun sets behind the mountains.

Differing from some of the more minimal homes in the surrounding area, the stylish pad celebrates colour and creativity, with unique artworks and custom sinks. Families and groups of friends can host dinner parties in the outdoor kitchen, relax indoors with the Sonos sound system or take a short trip to downtown Palm Springs.

After a morning lounging by the saltwater pool, choose from the many hiking trails in your immediate vicinity, hop in the car and you'll be there in around five minutes. The Indian Canyons, comprising three individual canyons, is a spectacular expanse of mountains and desert – whether you're up for a hefty walk, a picnic, or even a quick snap for social media, you couldn't be better located.

The Voyager

In one of Palm Springs' most distinctive neighbourhoods, where Elvis and Priscilla honeymooned in 1967, this slice of mid-century architecture has all the hallmarks of the area's defining style. From its stone-clad exterior and atrium entrance to its vaulted ceilings and walls of windows, it's just as cool as it was back in the day. And with a list of former owners that includes Chicago department store tycoons the Marshall Field family, it's little wonder there's a certain sophisticated atmosphere to the place. It's old-school Palm Springs at its very best.

Set on a corner plot, the home's outside space is idyllic, surrounded by a privacy wall and dotted with tall palms and desert planting – with the ever-present mountains acting as a backdrop. The pool is a perfect size, with an above-ground spa and plenty of sun loungers, and there's a propane barbecue so you can eat alfresco in the evenings. At night it's beautifully lit with uplighters beneath the trees.

But if you're attracted to this place for its design credentials, you'll no doubt be interested in the interiors. Maintained in almost original condition, there's a comfy lounge area with a fireplace, a large bar and dining table, with a kitchen tucked around the corner. Big bedrooms mostly open directly to the outside space and the bathrooms have a nostalgic feel too.

Just a seven-minute drive from downtown and a four-minute stroll from the home now known as the Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway (with daily tours),it's also close to hiking trails and convenient for the airport.

The backyard is, without a doubt, the heart of the home. We loved the pool with jaw-dropping mountain views, and the fire pit that sets the scene for many nights spent stargazing in great company.

Wake up feeling energised and embark on challenging early morning hikes within a mile of your home, returning in time for brunch in one of the innovative farm-to-fork restaurants that you'll find tucked away in Downtown, a five-minute drive north. Afterwards, while away your days soaking up the sun by the saltwater pool, setting up a table football tournament in the games room and tucking into tantalising home-cooked meals beneath the pergola.
