Be the first to bag a spot on the sand and set up camp for the day – the host supplies beach chairs, boogie boards and towels so you’ll be well equipped. That said, you’re so close that you can easily zip back for a forgotten umbrella or some sun cream. If you’re a thrill-seeker, hop on one of the supplied beach cruisers and ride the half mile down the front to Belmont Park’s Big Dipper. As the sun starts to dip in the sky, de-sand the kids ahead of pre-dinner drinks on the outdoor sofa. There’s a barbecue, and the sleek kitchen is a pleasure to cook in, but if you’d rather somebody else did the work, then you’re within walking distance of Mission Beach’s colourful restaurants and cafes.

Ideal for a family stay or reunion of friends, think of this home as a portal to all things spectacular. The beach, for one, is a quick walk away, and so are a number of great restaurants and markets. Belmont Park is ready to keep you company for hours, but we especially recommend seeing it at night when all the lights make it feel extra magical. 

Spending time at home will likely result in burgers grilling on the barbecue outside – stay out there for long after, even as the sun begins to dip, to bask in the holiday feeling. The fireplace is great for colder nights where you can enjoy takeout around the fire before playing a round of Monopoly. Hit the boardwalk on balmier evenings and if you happen to end up with a taco in one hand and a frozen margarita in the other, well, we call that a good night.

The bedrooms each have their own colour scheme too; the master suite is decked out in cooling greens, with a modern print hanging above the comfy bed. Things are just as bright in the third bedroom, where three queen-size beds mix up red furnishings against white walls. Chill out in the fully air-conditioned home, and drink fresh juice in the mornings as you slowly wake up at the breakfast bar. Although this home sits directly opposite San Diego's famous Mission Bay, there are plenty of perks at the address to stop you from immediately fleeing to the boardwalks and beaches.

The swimming pool and adjoining spa are glorious spots in which to enjoy the SoCal summers, while there's also an alfresco table under a parasol as well as a cabana with an impressively equipped outdoor kitchen whenever you're in need of a little shade. Add to that a rooftop terrace that offers glorious waterfront views, as well as a couple of balconies for good measure, and you've got an address in which you barely need to head inside.

That being said, you won't be disappointed when you finally get around to doing just that. The large glass windows let in plenty of sunshine and also look out to views of leafy palm trees. We're big fans of the sleek kitchen and equally stylish bathrooms, including one with a steam shower.

There may come a point when you fancy seeing a little more of the local area and Mission Bay sits literally just around the corner, offering plentiful opportunities for swimming and watersports. The centre of San Diego and Balboa Park both take a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, too.

You won’t get much closer to the beach than this San Diego villa, nudged up to the golden sands of South Mission. With panoramic sea views, you’re in a prime position for watching the sunset over the North Pacific Ocean from the beachfront terrace or balcony. This 1960s mid-century style condominium has amazing harbour views that are utterly picturesque at sunset. Ideally placed, this apartment is close to the best beach in San Diego according to locals, as it is just a short one-minute walk to Bonita Cove following a path down to the ocean and boardwalk. Here, you can play a game of beach volleyball or simply enjoy the serene ocean sounds and clean, golden sands. 

Meanwhile, the famous Mission Beach is only a seven-minute walk away, following a charming beach path that is located just outside your front door. This is a popular spot for water sports. Plus, Mission Boulevard is lined with cafés and eateries for your lunchtime needs, while, other cafés, restaurants, ice cream shops, and even a karaoke bar are within a ten-minute walk from your door. 

Belmont Park, San Diego’s historic oceanfront amusement park – featuring the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, Liberty Carousel, and Tilt-a-Wheel – can be reached within six minutes by foot. Close enough to walk to from this condo but far enough away that the sounds and crowds won’t disturb you at home while you are admiring the stunning views.

Recently remodelled, the kitchen is fully equipped and sparkly clean, while the L-shaped sofa in the living room is perfect for sinking into after a busy day.
