Having said all of that, we wouldn’t blame you if you decided never to leave the house at all. Located in the quiet area of Meyers, just outside of Echo Lake, in the summer months you’ll be spoilt for choice with hiking trails and swimming opportunities in the lakes (Echo Lake is a sixteen-minute drive, while Lake Tahoe is twenty-four minutes away). In winter, you can make the most of backcountry skiing and snowboarding before retiring home to heat up in front of the roaring fire with a hot chocolate. While skiing, snowboarding and hiking are possible at Northstar, ten minutes away by car, and Alpine/Squaw, twenty minutes away. The home is light, friendly and cheerful, and is sure to please families and guests of all ages.

Spread across a few floors, this impressive and innovative spot is somewhere between a townhouse and a lodge. It is just outside of the city centre of Truckee, surrounded by parkland and a river that keeps you close to nature.

In winter, watch snow grace the terrain and head to one of the ski resorts surrounding Lake Tahoe. The lake itself is a family paradise in the summer months when you can kayak and swim in it.

Back home, explore the nooks and crannies on each floor before curling up with a book by the living room fireplace. Lie on the plump sofas and make use of the large bathtubs to unwind after a day of skiing. The kitchen is modern and stylish, while the terrace is the perfect spot for lunch.

Just outside of the village of Calistoga in the northernmost tip of the Napa Valley, you'll encounter this rustic yet refined retreat surrounded by acres of verdant vineyards and lush gardens. With no nearby neighbours, enjoy that all-too-rare feeling of seclusion, yet the convenience of only being a mile and a half from downtown Calistoga. The estate is divided across three adjacent villas – which helps maintain privacy for large family get-togethers and groups of friends – while there's a yurt on the grounds that makes for an adventurous option for the kids. Everything here is set up for outdoor living. There are no fewer than twelve sets of French doors leading out onto ~1,000 sq ft of balconies and ~2,000 sq ft of patio space. The large outdoor gazebo boasts a full outdoor kitchen with a serious gas barbecue and alfresco dining area overlooking the stunning pool and Jacuzzi area. In addition to the usual high-end outdoor amenities, you'll also find professional-standard courts for sand volleyball, bocce ball and tennis. We sense a bit of friendly competition. Take a peek inside the barn, and you'll find a private games room with a pool table, ping pong, air hockey, and dartboard and a large rose garden adjacent to the villa, which provides fresh roses daily.

Surrounded by hiking trails, golf courses, and stretches of Pacific coast, this home in Santa Cruz not only has an enviable location, but it’s bursting with the potential for plenty of memories made. Golfers can tee off at one of two courses only minutes away, and nature lovers can get up close and personal with the native beauty of California by setting off on the hiking trails.

We love the raised garden beds full of seasonal vegetables and herbs – perfect for using in your cooking. With its multiple terraces and separate one bedroom casita, this home is just the ticket for a group of friends or multi-generational family wanting their own space. If you fancy venturing out, Downtown Sonoma is around a 5-minute drive away, but we really wouldn't blame you if you didn't want to step a foot away from this truly magical place.

Petite yet perfectly equipped with everything you need for a relaxing stay, this bright home in Pacifica is ready to welcome you into a blissful coastal break. With its large windows, there’s plenty of California sun that pours in creating a dazzling effect against the neutral decor that’s sprinkled with reclaimed wood. There's a harmony here between the natural world and modern sophistication to create a home that is as sleek as it is serene. The bedroom, meanwhile, is pared-yet and wonderfully comfortable, while the bathroom’s rainfall shower is a treat to wake up to each day. Our favourite spot, however, is the wraparound balcony – the ideal place to sip your morning coffee or watch the sunset over the mountains over a glass of wine.  Outside of your home, you’ve got plenty of cute surf shops and cafes on your way to Pacifica State Beach (a ten-minute walk) – a favourite for surfers, photographers and nature enthusiasts – while San Francisco waits to be explored, just twenty minutes away by car.

Private parking is available and you’ll find it’s less than a ten-minute drive to Half Moon Bay, while San Francisco is twenty-five minutes away.

Tucked away in the serene coastal community of Pedro Point, this modern cabin offers the perfect escape to the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Located just a nine-minute walk from Pacifica State Beach and a six-minute stroll from Shelter Cove Beach – you'll be blown away by the bay's beauty, making it a popular spot for photographers. It's also a favourite amongst surfers, so whether you like to be part of the action or watch it all from a safe distance, Pacifica State Beach caters to all. There is a range of surf shops and some great local eateries on your doorstep too. For those who want to see more than just the coast, San Francisco is less than a twenty-five-minute drive away. When you're done exploring all that the San Francisco Peninsula has to offer, head home and rustle up a cioppino in the modern kitchen. We love the balcony with its views over the neighbourhood – perfect for a sundowner. Wonderfully positioned to make the most of this coastal area – this home is a nine-minute walk from Pacifica State Beach. The jagged coastline caters to a whole range of visitors, from surfers who like to ride the bay's impressive waves to photographers keen on catching the beautiful light. Or go for a hike on Shelter Cove Beach, a six-minute stroll away. There's an array of surf shops and some fantastic local eateries on your doorstep too. For a more action-packed day trip, San Francisco and all it has to offer is just a twenty-five-minute drive from this home. Chic, coastal-inspired interiors, polished concrete floors, and vast windows make it a delight to stay here. We love the vistas over Pedro Point from the living room and balcony – enjoy a glass of Californian rosé wine while enjoying the views. Later whip up a Clam Chowder in the kitchen before relaxing on the comfy sofa – this place is all about unwinding.

In the business hub of Fair Oaks, near the Facebook HQ, this flash apartment sits in a building filled with amenities. If you’re not hitting the building’s private gym, perhaps take a jog through Bedwell Bayfront Park, a five-minute walk away. For a day out in the city, San Francisco is just a half-hour drive away (or fifty minutes on the train from Redwood). 

Apart from a private gym, the building is also home to a huge outdoor swimming pool, surrounded by outdoor lounges with fire pits for cool evenings. There are myriad cafés and lounges inside, and a plush barbecue area outside on the deck too. The apartment itself is big and bright, with modern artworks popping against gallery-white walls. These all make it seem like an oasis in itself, so the fact that you have vast numbers of outdoor activities on your doorstep – from skiing to hiking, boating, golf, and more – leaves you spoiled for choice.

Nestled on a five-acre estate, this custom-built home received the Outdoor Living Award from Tahoe Quarterly Magazine – and we can see why. As you arrive at the property, take a moment to breathe in the fresh pine-scented air while taking in the breathtaking views over the abundance of nature. 

With two levels of outdoor living areas, you can lap up the views from different angles without leaving the great outdoors. Enjoy blissful homemade meals and barbecues on the terrace featuring an alfresco dining area before watching the sunset from the hot tub. You'll find further entertainment amenities on the second terrace, including a ping pong table and enough space to practice yoga at sunrise. 

In the backyard, warm up around the fire pit as night falls, and make the most of the solid stone loungers during the daytime of the warmer months spent here. There's just as much leisure space inside as outside; as in the open plan living area and kitchen, stretch out wherever you find comfy amidst the cosy and contemporary interiors with a glass of California wine in hand. We bet the floor-to-ceiling fireplace will keep you feeling warm and fuzzy after a day of discovering the Truckee and Lake Tahoe area.

Overlooking beautiful Donner Lake, which sits on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada, guests will find a home that will perfectly suit a small family.  The first bedroom has a king-size bed, while bedroom two is made up of a queen-size bunk bed. More importantly, guests have easy access to the lake so make sure to pack your swimsuits and any floating devices. Wander around the edge of the lake and you'll come across charming cafes, restaurants and shops. We would, however, still recommend having a car in order to explore all this area has to offer.

Welcoming up to twelve guests, Colours of the Lake is the perfect home for a large family gathering just outside of Donner Lake. Whether you decide to visit in the summer or the winter, this area has plenty to offer to make it magical all year long. The open-plan living area is the home’s main social hub, perfect for chit-chatting while someone prepares dinner, heated debates around the large dining table, or family games in front of the roaring fire. Then step outside and admire the wonderful views from the back deck. From here, you can also spot the sixteenth-hole of the Tahoe Donner Golf Course, which is surely worth a visit if you enjoy the game of golf. Spend your days swimming in any of the area’s magical lakes, enjoy exclusive skiing in colder months or just hang back at the home and relax with a great book and even better company. However you choose to spend your time here, you’ll be glad to soak your tired muscles in the outdoor hot tub at the end of a long day.

With the magic of the sea, sun, and stars surrounding you at Half Moon Bay, this incredible home is the perfect weekend retreat for a family, only twenty minutes away from San Fransisco. Charge the Tesla at the EV charging station and then explore the trails of the National Forest backing the house or pack your beach bag and stop by the Pacific Ocean, a fifteen-minute stroll away. Sip on sundowners whilst soaking in the hot tub and watch the sunset over the ocean. As the stars speckle the sky, light the fire pit to keep the night going. Kids will be thrilled with the tree-house style bunk beds, a playroom packed with laser tag and a mountain of lego, the big screen projector in the den and the virtual reality set-up. Outside, this place has the wood-tiled cladding and white bannisters of a traditional Bay Area home, but the curved wall of windows in the double-height living room creates a modern feel. A chef’s kitchen comes equipped with more than you need for self-catering – there’s a chef’s torch for those who fancy whipping up a creme brulee – and a collection of spices, oils and condiments are yours to use. Should you need to catch up on some work, there are a plethora of modern office spaces tucked away too.

Plus, it’s just a half-hour drive into the heart of San Francisco, just up the bay.

There’s plenty within the building to fill your downtime. Swim laps in the huge outdoor swimming pool, or laze on a lounger in the sun. There’s a barbecue area dappled with stringed lights and fire pits in the outdoor lounges if you’re feeling social. Inside the apartment block, you’ve got a full gym with its own yoga studio, cafés and myriad plush lounges. Should you crave some privacy, the apartment is kitted out for relaxation in the open-plan living area, and convenient for working remotely with a laptop-friendly desk. The kitchen is particularly spacious and well-equipped with a big breakfast bar for busy mornings.
