Whether you're an outdoorsy type that likes nothing better than setting off on a hiking trail or somebody who just wants a few days away from the noise and non-stop pace of city life, this cute home sat just a mile away from Joshua Tree National Park is a dream. Surrounded by Californian desert, there's seating on the terrace or hammocks from which to enjoy the silence, as well as a fire pit for when the sun goes down and it's just you and the stars up above to keep you company. Inside, there are plenty of board games, meditation spaces and streaming options to keep you occupied, as well as a guitar in case you fancy a campfire sing-song. Walking routes start just across the road, while the town of Twentynine Palms is less than ten minutes away by car in case you're ever craving civilisation — although, with the tranquillity that abounds out in these parts, we don't blame you if you just fancy sticking to your desert abode.

Designed with the natural scenery of the desert in mind – this is the perfect place to gather with your family and friends. Wake up with the  sunrise – we love the incredible views from every window. Spend idyllic days playing with the corn hole set in the garden and enjoy lunch at the picnic table under the mesquite and desert willow trees, while you listen to the birds. As the desert light fades, sit by the fire pit, dine on the patio under the bistro lights, or unwind in the six-person hot tub. Our favourite place is the hammocks, looking up at a sky full of diamonds – this place is terrific for stargazing. Indoors, relax on the sofa with a beer or challenge someone to a game on the foosball table – this home is made for entertaining. Your lovely hosts can also help set up spa and meditation sessions, as well as a private chef and movie nights, amongst many other activities. If you can tear yourself away from this desert paradise – go for a hike in the stunning Joshua Tree National Park – it's only a ten-minute drive to the north entrance.

The healing crystals and yoga station make this home a place to recharge, while the view of the night sky from the back garden is one of the best in the world. We’d recommend a stargazing session from the private hot tub. Twentynine Palms also has one of the quietest entrances to the national park, and the rock formations near this entrance are some of the most beautiful.

It offers great access to the park, as well as other hiking trails, and while you shouldn’t ignore that, the home is a destination in itself. The views of the landscape are probably the first things that you’ll notice, and with good reason. On top of that, pools, hot tubs, and fire pits aren’t unusual in and around Joshua Tree, but rarely do you come across examples that have so much style. Each amenity fits within the aesthetic of the larger home in a deliberate, measured way and a dedicated hospitality concierge is on hand to help you arrange anything you may want or need. We can go on to list more features, but even that wouldn’t capture the grandeur of the home. Relaxing beside the pool as the sun sets or swapping stories around the fire pit under the stars are the kind of experiences you won’t forget in a hurry.

Joshua Tree National Park is also at a similar distance and an absolute must visit.

A hilltop cabin in a unique area of the desert, this place is nestled on its own between Pioneertown and Yucca Valley on what feels like the scenic drive through Joshua Tree National Park. The trees, rocks, and landscape just outside the doors are just as breathtaking as anything you would see in the park, except you have them all to yourself. 

There’s a wood-burning stove to keep you warm on those chill nights, while one of your musically talented friends can play a tune on the grand piano (though there’s also a Bluetooth sound system, for convenience). On the walls, you’ll find original art by the late Gerald Zeldin, and an interior so impressive it was featured in the NY Times fashion section. You can feel the history of this old mining cabin in the wood-beamed ceiling and clapboard (yet modern)  bathroom. Picture-frame windows let the sunlight stream into this boho-chic interior and let you gaze out over the endless desert before you.

This place is totally off-grid and once you’ve experienced the unique feeling of heating the outdoor hot tub with firewood as you gaze at the stars, there’s no going back.

With eye-catching custom murals and generous touches of blue all around, you’ll find yourself in an oasis as exuberant as the outdoors of Palm Springs that Hollywood stars can’t seem to get enough of. 

The home is a mid-century modern delight, and you’ll find a library with a lounge just for reading, a pool terrace dotted with energising palm trees and sensational views of the mountains, and a games room made for indulging in some friendly competition with your fellow guests. You won't want to leave but if you ever decide to, an adventure is always calling out in the Indian Canyons and you’re a five-minute drive from the eclectic mix of shops (everything from candy shops to record stores) in Downtown Palm Springs.

If the interiors of this minimalist home appear to have jumped straight out of the pages of a glossy magazine, you’re not far off. This home, designed by Palmer and Kriesel is hidden away in a Palm Springs cul-de-sac and has previously graced the pages of the New York Times. Homage to all things mid-century, with Eames chairs, Nelson lamps and a vintage Malm fireplace in the master bedroom.

We were wowed by the open living area, designed with socialising in mind and with great views of the backyard. Out in the garden, reclining by the shimmering turquoise pool is the perfect way to unwind, but if you need to take your relaxing to the next level, there’s also a hot tub to bubble the night away in. Dine alfresco under the endless desert sky, then end the evening around the flickering fire pit with a glass of something strong as the sun sets behind the mountains.
