Lucky for you, you’re just one block from Upper King Street with its array of shops and restaurants, while Historic Charleston is less than a twenty-minute walk away.

Spend just a few minutes of lounging on the deck, looking out on the sprawling greens of the Fazio Golf Course, and you'll understand why this Hilton Head home is a must-visit. It's situated in the gated Palmetto Dunes, an oceanfront resort bursting with outdoor activities, including tennis, surf lessons and kayaking in the saltwater lagoon. For a more relaxed pace, there's fishing and three on-site golf courses to choose from. The beach is just a seven-minute stroll away — grab a towel, pack a picnic and spend the day with the sand between your toes. We’ve got to hand it to this gorgeous home — or should we say mansion — on Hilton Head Island. As far as luxurious hideaways go, this one exudes class. Surrounded by lush tropical gardens and within a two-minute walk of the beach, there is something deliciously magical about this place. We fell in love with the secluded palm-fringed swimming pools (one for the adults and one for the children). In fact, the leafy garden is something of a centrepiece, with balconies, terraces, and charming arched loggias all cleverly arranged to give maximum views over this delightful outside space. Find a peaceful corner to read a book, sip a cool drink before dinner or tuck into a family feast beneath the stars. And who could fail to be charmed by the sweet little path, twisting through the trees to the sand dunes and beach beyond? Sweep up the grand steps from the pool area and the treats continue inside, with a lofty entrance hall and impressive open concept living space — perfect for gathering the whole family together. A second living area upstairs gives plenty of room for large groups and families travelling together. There are big bedrooms galore (think four-poster beds and balcony views), palatial bathrooms and bunk beds for the kids. And because it’s all part of an exclusive, larger resort, there’s a wealth of facilities and amenities to enjoy should you wish to, including three golf courses, a tennis centre, restaurants, shopping and harbourside entertainment.

With its white clapboard exterior and powder-blue window shutters, this traditional home is the belle of the ball in Charleston. Step into a Southern scene of four-poster beds, floral wallpaper and palm prints in each of the bedrooms. While there is plenty of old-school charm in this townhouse, its recent refurbishment included some modern pops, like glamorous marble bathrooms with gold accents. In the living space, a kitchen, sofas and banquette seating are perfect for group debriefs after a long day. For a real taste of this part of the world, nab one of the wicker seats on the veranda for sundowners – preferably of the bourbon kind – before wandering a short distance to one of the city's famous restaurants or bars.

Just short walk away from the beach on Hilton Head Island, this villa is offers true coastal chic. Part of a community development, the home has access to basketball and tennis courts, but there are plenty of tournaments to be had in the house too, with a foosball table and swimming pool. The designated cook can whip up their meals of choice on the outdoor grill, with plenty of seating for most of the house on the patio, while upstairs you'll find a medium sized kitchen for light meals. For peace and quiet, there are several balconies for reading and the bedrooms are fitted with vintage style furnishings and four-poster beds, perfect for hiding away from the world. When you do feel like exploring, the area is rich in activities, with water-sports, walking trails, and cycle routes all easy to access from home.

Double Trouble

It can sometimes be difficult to find a home for a big group getaway – the balance between communal spaces and private corners is always a tricky one, but this home definitely gets it right. Or perhaps we should say homes, as you'll find yourselves spread across two separate buildings, with a shared garden and courtyard between them. The impressive bedrooms allow you to shut the door, recharge your batteries and enjoy a moment of peace and quiet when you need to. Conversely, the large living rooms and, of course, the outdoor seating area provide plenty of room for parties and chatting into the night. The interiors are pleasingly minimalist, with hardwood floors and luxury furnishings giving the space an air of sophistication as well as comfort. Downtown Charleston is within easy walking distance – all its bars and restaurants are just a ten-minute stroll away, so heading out for dinner and drinks is as simple as walking down the street.

This beautiful home has a prime location overlooking the Palmetto Dunes lagoon. Just ten minutes’ walk from Hilton Head’s dazzling sands, it’s an ideal base for a beach holiday. There’s something very classic about the interior, with muted neutrals, layered lighting and high-quality furnishings. The lofty panelled ceilings in the lounge and the Roman-style columns in the entrance hall give an added sense of grandeur to the living space.  Large windows overlook the lagoon and the private pool, where we imagine you’ll spend most of your time. Holidays here are all about enjoying the perks of the Palmetto Dunes community, with three world-class golf courses, a tennis centre, restaurants, shops and free use of the Dunes Buggy. Outdoorsy types will love the forty kilometres of paved bike paths and the Atlantic surf. After a long day of sun, sea and fun, we can see you sipping a Long Island iced tea on one of the deck chairs that have been thoughtfully set up by the lagoon, before enjoying a balmy evening dining on the terrace. A sweet summer’s day comes easy in this elegant, Georgian-style home. After a rejuvenating sleep in one of the lavish bedrooms, all you’ll want is to get out into the sun. We know that some people prefer sandy beaches while others like swimming pools, and we love that this home has both – a private, glassy pool out back and the beach just a stone’s throw away. The home also has an entertainment room and well-equipped bar to ensure that everyone gets their share of fun. Though with a golf course nearby and rest of the island playground, perhaps we didn’t even need to worry about that.

Embracing past and present, as all Charleston homes should, a careful balance of contemporary southern living with traditional features gives this home an elegant feel. Featuring beautiful hardwood floors, exposed beams and customary shutters, you’ll feel grounded in this historic location. Of course, it wouldn’t be a true southern home without an enviable porch, fittingly adorned with beautiful rocking chairs, perfect for lazy summer nights. Guests are also welcome to enjoy the gracefully landscaped garden and terrace, shared with neighbours. Located just one block from Upper King Street, you’ll find an abundance of shops, bars and restaurants in the surrounding neighbourhood and Charleston's historic downtown area is just a twenty minute walk away.

Amid sandy strands and a network of lagoons, this villa is in one of the most picturesque areas of South Carolina. In just ten minutes, you can move from the water basin's grassy banks to the ocean through the scenic woodland between the two. But really, you never need to leave the house, with its stunning private pool, an array of balconies and verandas and a basketball court cushioned between the trees. Huddle around the fire pit on winter evenings or cook up a BBQ on the grill by the pool in summer. Inside, the bedrooms have large beds and deluxe furnishings, while the sunken living room makes for a great space to relax in front of the TV. Rent kayaks and paddle boards by the dock of the lagoon and catch an unforgettable sunset from the water.

Immediately you’re welcomed by the traditional panelled exterior, the polished beams and hardwood floors that run throughout. Then, you’re wowed by the luxurious stylish design details. There’s lots of space to spread out, with two cosy living and dining areas, both with their own kitchens. The master bedroom opens onto a first-floor porch, perfect for a quiet nightcap. And we love the vast, leafy courtyard garden, with plenty of seating and space to enjoy good weather. After you’ve made yourself at home, walk just one block to the eclectic Upper King street. Soak up its colourful, characterful buildings and discover some of Charleston’s best bars and restaurants.

Time to polish off the ring and get down on one knee because this home has us head over heels. Only two hundred metres from the beach, this Hilton Head Island villa is a luxurious, private hideaway made for lazy summer days. Mornings start in the bedrooms, where floor to ceiling windows bring in lots of light, before toddling into the open-plan kitchen. There's a breakfast bar for quick eats, but we prefer big get-togethers on the dining table or on the patio outside. Days can be spent lounging by the curved swimming pool, where you can take a dip to cool off before padding back inside for a drink. When things get too warm, there are several hang-out spaces, including a bright and breezy lounge, thanks to its double height windows, and a reading nook with views over the pool. Should you want to explore further afield, it's a short drive or cycle to Harbour Town with its seafood restaurants, boutiques and bustling marina.

You’ll breathe a sigh of contentment the minute you step through the door of this dreamy beachfront apartment. Beautifully finished in natural sand and earth tones, this home feels like a continuation of the rolling dunes just beyond the balcony. Your eye will immediately be drawn in that direction too, with French doors framing a postcard-perfect view of swaying palms and sparkling ocean. Step through onto your private terrace to feel the gentle sea breeze. The building offers several shared spaces: immaculate tropical gardens surround a large outdoor pool circled with sun loungers and tall palms. There’s a communal barbecue area where you can have a cook-up and socialise with your neighbours. The fine white sandy beach and the shimmer of the ocean call to you from just beyond the pool.

Warm and welcoming from the moment you arrive, you'll find a whitewashed living area with contrasting window frames, dining chairs and accent tables. Upstairs, the serene bedrooms boast traditional characteristics that further the theme of championing past and present, with wooden beams, original hardwood floors and exposed brick fireplaces providing eye-catching charm in abundance. Outside, you'll find a beautiful shared garden and terrace where you can dine alfresco under ancient Charleston trees while you watch the sunset. If you decide to venture out, you’re just one block from Upper King Street with its wide selection of shops, restaurants and bars.

Days take on a slower pace on Hilton Head Island and this villa-style home is perfect for unwinding. A beachy vibe runs throughout, with wooden floorboards that can easily be swept after sandy feet run across them, and slanted, high ceilings to provide a cool relief from the outdoor heat. Keep an eye on the whole family in the open living, kitchen and dining room, as they play card games in the alcove or enjoy movie nights piled on the sofas. The home is on the edge of a golf course and you can watch the action from the front deck, complete with a barbecue for rustling up some grilled delights if you get hungry. For peace and quiet, the upstairs master bedroom has a private balcony, perfect for curling up with a book. Part of a complex, the home has access to a shared pool and tennis courts, while it's only a short drive to Harbour Town and the beach.

There’s a real sense of calm about this newly remodelled beach house. Whether it’s the neutral shades, or the copious amounts of natural light, you’ll find any tension melting away the minute you step through the door.  Located in the sought-after Lawton Woods area of Sea Pines, it’s just a short walk or bike ride from Hilton Head’s glorious beaches. Spend your days soaking up that South Carolina sunshine on the sands, lunching at the oceanfront beach clubs, or exploring Harbour Town’s boutiques, craft shops and chilled out cafes. Back at your tranquil retreat, de-sand the kids, before firing up the grill, ready for an al fresco supper of local seafood. There's plenty of space to stretch out in the living room after dark – watch a movie or simply enjoy chatting over a glass of wine.

Located just outside of Charleston's historic downtown area and close to the shops, restaurants and bars of King Street, this home is in an enviable position within the city. And just like its surroundings, the building itself is steeped in history. Built in 1885, it boasts picturesque porches, hardwood floors and a crisp colour scheme. The kitchen is eye-catching with its bright green cabinets, and offers a bold contrast to the elegant Art Deco-inspired living area. Our favourite element, however, is the veranda. No trip to the southern states is complete without at least some of the relaxation taking place on a traditional covered porch, and this home offers a charming one where you can sit and while away the hours with a cool drink.

Surrounded by lagoons on all sides, this low-country home is tucked into the flora and fauna of Hilton Head Island. The gracious nature of the home makes it ideal for both a short summer weekend and long stay alike. Wander through the elegant courtyard and find yourself at ease upon entering the living room reminiscent of a scene from Town and Country magazine. Wicker chairs and colourfully upholstered furniture are dotted throughout. Outside, spend hours in the pool before heading out for the day’s adventure. At the day’s end back on the patio, turn on the Sonos speaker, kick back in an Adirondack chair, and toss some patties on the BBQ.

Fall into a relaxed mood, lulled by the gentle maritime blues and calming creams of the décor, among fresh, organic surroundings. Step out to a refreshing pool and sun deck, and of course, alfresco dining next to the gas barbecue comes as standard. Just like this house, the natural world is a huge part of the local area's charm. This whole barrier island is eco-friendly and has a myriad of beaches. The house is in a quiet resort preserve with a protected wildlife forest between it and the mainland. With this location, you’ll feel agreeably separate from big city life. But at just twenty kilometres from crossing state lines into Savannah, Georgia, you can discover boldly flavoured seafood, antebellum architecture, and quirky shops – although it’s unlikely you’ll want to stray so far from your sanctuary.
