Steeped in 1950s charm, this coral stone mansion was once the home of a United States Ambassador. Now – seventy years later – it’s ready to take you on the holiday of a lifetime, boasting a wealth of high-end amenities that’ll make your stay in Barbados one to remember.

Stay in an architect’s vision of a house on Barbados’ Platinum Coast. This colonial-style house was designed as a holiday home by and for renowned architect Oliver Messel. You can feel the detail from an architect’s eye in the coral columns and stone-hewn bookshelves in the grand living room. Shelves and dressers are adorned with driftwood and shells, a reminder of your location by the beach. A direct path leads to the caster-sugar sand of Mullins Bay and the charming cafes, shops and rum shacks of Speightstown are within walking distance too.

From the open living and dining room, French doors lead to the covered terrace, which feels just like an extension of the home with ferns and yucca adorning the lounge area. Inside, the villa has a traditional West Indian coastal home feel, with white and pale grey tones and a subtle nautical theme. All of the bedrooms are of a good size and each has its own en-suite – two even open straight to the pool deck. Indoor-outdoor living is all the easier thanks to the large covered terrace at the rear, where your group can enjoy pre-dinner drinks and a few games of pool. Hidden away off the main living area, there's a cosy media room, so get some popcorn and watch your favourite movie. Soulful Sunsets

Which way to the beach? Just through a set of urn-topped gates directly from this home’s back garden. With lush grounds resting on the sand, the endless greens and blues of the Caribbean Sea can be seen from every balcony, veranda and patio seat, fringed by palm fronds and orchids. The Roman-style swimming pool stretches towards the sea and casual breakfasting spots and loungers line the poolside. Two gazebos crown the garden – one for dining and one for lounging on the sprawling day bed. The covered veranda acts as a full outdoor living and dining room to make the most of the Barbados weather, but if you do want to spend time inside there’s plenty of room to spread out. Designed by Oliver Messel in the 1950s, each room has huge windows and doors to let that sea breeze in. The grand living room with antique floral furnishings, gilded mirrors and rich oil paintings is made for high tea, while a Moroccan-style snug in the garden makes for an opulent TV room. We love the dining room, where candelabra glow against the coral stone walls with an undeniable air of romance. The private chef and butler can take care of all your dining needs (and there’s a gym and tennis court to work off each fine-dining feast). Three of the bedrooms are in the main house, and for guests that want a little extra privacy the one-bedroom cottage by the beach has its own living space and terrace with a plunge pool.

With its elegant white stone exterior, ivy-covered columns and centrepiece fountain, this Bajan villa is inescapably palatial. It has been designed in a crescent shape so that every room benefits from an uninterrupted view of the azure Caribbean Sea and has access to the stunning outdoor space. This is where we're pretty certain you'll be spending most of your days — gliding elegantly through the waters of the infinity pool before drying off on a lounger under the shade of a parasol. If you ever fancy a change of scenery, both Gibbes and Mullins Beaches are just a five-minute drive away. However, you'll want to be back in time for dinner in the open-air dining room — did somebody say barbecue? — with the sun dipping behind the horizon as your backdrop.

Green Flash

This extraordinary villa was conjured up by celebrated British stage designer Oliver Messel — commissioned by the then-CEO of Heinz, no less — and we're sure you'll agree that there's something inescapably theatrical about this property. Inside, you'll find sparkling chandeliers, a four-poster bed and classical sculptures — were it not for the glistening Caribbean Sea in the distance and the smell of tropical plants in the air, you could fool yourself into thinking you were in an aristocrat's London townhouse. There's an almost dizzying choice of ways to spend an afternoon here. In the two acres of grounds, there's a huge swimming pool and a tennis court, plus the golden sands of Mullins Beach can be reached in five minutes by foot. If that all sounds too exerting, then simply relax in one of the two gazebos painted in Messel's trademark shade of sage green and doze off to the sound of the waves just beyond. Best of all, you won't have to lift a finger as the villa's staff — including a chef, housekeeper and butler — are there to make your stay completely stress free.

The Magic of Theatre

Whether you're cooling off in the private pool, admiring the ocean views from the balconies or tucking into an alfresco feast on the covered terrace, this breezy villa promises plenty of rest and relaxation. Throw open the French doors for seamless indoor/outdoor living – the open-plan living area is designed with groups in mind, so there's more than enough space to spread out. Mullins Beach is just a seven-minute drive away, so grab a towel and pack a picnic and sprawl out on the sand. Your hosts can even arrange sun loungers, beach umbrellas, water sports and beachside waiter service for an extra fee, making this the ideal Caribbean escape.

Perched just above the western coastline of Barbados overlooking Alleynes Bay, you will struggle to find a home anywhere in the world with a spot on the map as covetable as this and the living quarters themselves are as spectacular as you would imagine.

We're also smitten by the teppanyaki bar on the upper-floor terrace complete with an ocean view that's truly envy-inducing and if you don't fancy cooking, fear not – the villa has a dedicated team of staff, including a private chef who will prepare three meals a day.

Sticking around outside, the swimming pool in the central courtyard is a thing of beauty and there's no shortage of loungers and daybeds on which to kick back in the sunshine. There's a refined luxury to the garden full of tropical vegetation and a wander about the space will reveal the fact that the beach lies mere footsteps from the home. You'll definitely feel secluded during a stay here, but the bright lights of Holetown are only a short drive away when you're craving civilisation again.



A Sensational Sojourn

Situated directly on the beach, this villa in Reeds Bay is a dream come true. You couldn't ask for a better location – not only is the ocean just steps away but there are plenty of bars and restaurants within walking distance when you fancy a night on the town. Holetown and Speightstown are also less than a ten-minute drive, so you're spoilt for choice. That said, it'll be hard to tear yourself away from your private oasis. Spend your days sunbathing in the beachfront garden, swimming in the clear blue ocean, cooling off in the plunge pool or unwinding on the shady terrace or balconies with a cocktail and a good book. Inside, it's bright and breezy. Even when you're lounging on the cushy sofas, that Caribbean Sea view is there to admire. Though some may find the 'under the sea'-inspired design a little too on-the-nose, we think it's a whimsical way to embrace the stunning oceanfront location. And the best part? You don't even have to worry about cooking, as a home chef will prepare three meals a day for you. Now that's a holiday.

What's the ideal distance between a holiday home and the beach? If you answered 'as short as possible', this elegant stone villa on the west coast of Barbados has your name on it. Mere steps from Gibbes Beach, you just know a stay here will mean long days of swimming in the ocean and basking in the sun. However, there's plenty at this home to keep you off the golden sands — for a while at least. For a start, there's the swimming pool, but an impressive outdoor kitchen complete with barbecue and a wet bar will make it feel as you have your very own private beach club at your disposal. If you ever need respite from the midday heat, the outside terrace is the perfect place to cool off with a good read in shady solitude. In less than ten minutes by taxi, you have tennis courts and golf courses, while there's Speightstown to your north and Holetown to the south if you want a taste of nightlife.

As you travel along the winding driveway, through an enchanting mahogany grove to this luxury home in the renowned centuries-old 23-acre Porters Great House Estate, you'll be congratulating yourself on discovering this gem. Wander down hidden paths past the sparkling pool and old sugar works through stunning tropical gardens. It's hard to choose, but we think one of our favourite spots is by the peaceful lily pond. Once the old carriage house, the villa is cosy yet chic with coral stone walls, marble floors, and metalwork chandeliers. We particularly adore the dining room with its high ceiling, intricate woodwork design and wall of wooden shutters – it's the perfect place to entertain family and friends. If you can bear to leave this Barbadian paradise with its green monkeys and gorgeous birds roaming the grounds, then the gorgeous white sands and turquoise waters of Colony Club Beach are just over a five-minute stroll away.

Sugar Sugar

Despite being found on the west coast of Barbados, there's something very Romanesque about this villa. Perhaps it's the white stone arches in the hallway, the grand balconies fit for an emperor's rousing speech or even the fountain in a small alcove found at the end of the living room — however, the magnificently blue views of the Caribbean Sea from the terrace will soon remind you where you really are. This home has its own private pathway to the golden sands of the beach so you can go from bed to ocean in the space of minutes, but on your way, you might find that you get distracted by the swimming pool that dominates the lush tropical outdoor space. What we love about this vast property is the array of shady seating areas for when you need to escape the sunshine — dry off after a dip under the parasol, enjoy an alfresco feast on the veranda or watch the sky gradually change colour at the end of the day from the comfort of the covered balcony. As they say, when in Barbados, do as the Bajans do.
