The host has taken it upon themself to create a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city, curating an eclectic look with antiques and flea-market finds. We love the living and dining room, complete with mid-century chairs and a chandelier to create an elegant glow for dinner parties. Another fabulous use of light comes from the shuttered windows to your private balcony. With three sets of rich, wooden folding doors, you can step out to the railings with a glass of tempranillo after supper to watch the city light up at nightfall. With decorative, gilded bed frames in the sumptuous bedrooms, you’ll even feel stylish while you sleep. Rest up well, because you’ve got some exploring to do the next morning – the three galleries of the Art Walk are all less than fifteen minutes away.

The most remarkable thing about Espinas is the quiet. Despite having three balconies, and being in the middle of Lavapiés, the street it looks onto is actually fairly calm. The building is old, and a lot of the original structure features prominently in the flat, which has been designed to complement the space, rather than dominate it. There is some pretty loud wallpaper though, which stops the design from falling into the dreaded ‘neutral’ category.

Positioned just a fifteen-minute stroll from El Retiro Park, this home provides a stylish base in Madrid’s beating heart. You’ll find it nestled in the cobbled streets of Barrio de las Letras, surrounded by an array of eateries, bars, and museums, the Reina Sofia and the Museo del Prado, less than ten minutes from your doorstep on foot. Perched on the third floor, it boasts delightful views from its street-facing balcony. After a restful slumber, spend mornings out here, tucking into coffee and in the sunshine before slipping out to explore.

Twenty minutes on foot from Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, and El Retiro Park, this apartment is well-placed to explore. Many shops, restaurants, and metro stations are nearby, as well as some of Madrid's most famous markets. When you're not sightseeing, this central home is practical and comfortable. We love the exposed brick and stone walls, though it does mean it's a little dark. The kitchen is the ideal size to rustle up lighter fare, but we suspect you'd prefer dining out.

This fabulous three-bedroom apartment is stylishly decorated throughout and brimming with character. The open-plan living room has lovely high ceilings, beautiful period windows, and a bright and airy feel. The bedrooms might not be the largest bedrooms we've ever seen, but they all have a lovely, calming feel and do the job just fine. We also love all the original paintings  throughout the home - this host has style!

Location is all important for city breaks, and this apartment has a winning location. It’s in the heart of La Latina, one of the most traditional neighbourhoods in Madrid. You’ll be just a short stroll from Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor and will have your pick of bars, restaurants, and cafes nearby. This comes in particularly handy because there’s not a huge amount of space for socialising in the apartment – but you’ll find everything you need for a comfortable place to rest your head. 

La Latina's Heart

You’ll hit the bullseye in this cool modern apartment, bang in the centre of Madrid's hip and happening Embajadores area. A bright space with tastefully exposed brickwork and an American-style kitchen, you’ll find plenty here to make yourself feel at home. Sip a coffee on the iron balcony railings looking out at the street below, or start the day slowly by kicking back on the white leather sofa with a book in hand. The sizeable bedroom is well-lit, the bathroom fully provisioned and pleasantly decorated with marble-look tiles, and there’s even a designated workspace for those travelling on business. But it’s the apartment’s location in the central hub of Madrid that will truly excite you, as you’re within walking distance from everything fun and artistic, including the Prado Museum, the Rastro flea market and the Plaza Mayor, as well as endless bars, eateries, theatres and shops too. Situated just metres away from the metro, you'll have easy access to explore the whole city with ease and efficiancy. The apartment itself is modern, though the kitchen needs a refresh – that said, some of Madrid’s most eclectic restaurants are right on your doorstep. With space for six guests, two of which will be on the living room sofa bed, it'll do nicely as a city base – all the sights are within easy reach, and Lavapiés metro is just a short walk away.

Located in the heart of La Latina, a traditional neighbourhood in the centre of Madrid, you'll be just a few meters from Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol with this home as your base. With an open-plan kitchen and living area, plus a private courtyard terrace, it's easy to chill out between excursions here. While this home features stylish and contemporary designs, it lacks natural daylight – so it is best suited to those who intend to spend much of their time out and about in the city. It's also worth noting that the bunk beds are situated in the hallway, so we think these beds would be better suited to children.

Simplicity is at the fore when it comes to Windcomb. The sense of space is not something to be taken for granted, either. Eight people, and not a sofa bed in sight. Unfortunately, it’s rather common for unscrupulous landlords to try to shoehorn people in, but that’s certainly not the case here. It’s a bit of a pain to have to climb up the steps, but that’s an occupational risk when you test so many homes in old buildings – it’s hardly a dealbreaker.


Windcomb

A perfect base for city adventures, this home in the heart of Madrid is a refreshing blend of old and new. Set in a typical period building, it's anything but old-fashioned inside, with white walls and concrete tile floors providing the backdrop to a riot of colourful art and dramatic, contemporary furnishings. Think tall ceilings and French doors, but also statement lighting and a sleek, white kitchen. 

Designed for a couple or a solo traveller, it's not all style over substance – it's a perfectly inviting, comfortable home from home. We particularly love the artsy living room, with its little balcony, and the bathroom, where you can freshen up in the rainfall shower under the banana leaf ceiling.

A pretty, quiet spot, but with all the major attractions – as well as all sorts of cafes, restaurants and bars – practically on your doorstep, it's an excellent choice.

Shifting Gears has clearly been designed by someone with an eye for interiors. Even though the footprint is pretty small, the space has been manipulated cleverly to make it feel much bigger. Some of the design is more what you’d expect to find in Copenhagen than in Madrid (the wall-mounted bike feels like a particular candidate for an Instagram post). There’s even a balcony, which although too small for socialising, has a lovely view out over La Latina.


Shifting Gears

What this compact apartment lacks in size, it makes up for in style. Cool and contemporary, we think it works best for solo travellers, couples, and digital nomads – especially those keen to explore Madrid on foot. The living space has funky neon signs and industrial-chic accents. Though snug, the kitchen is well-suited to rustling up light bites – there's also a high-top table that can be used as a work-from-home space. The cherry on top is the location in La Latina. You'll find restaurants and tapas bars aplenty here, plus all the must-see landmarks like Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace are about a ten-minute walk away.
