With a fantastic address, just off the Paseo de la Castellana, this apartment has a wealth of attractions nearby. The upmarket districts of Salamanca, Chamberi and Justicia are all close, so you'll have plenty of fine restaurants, chic boutiques and art galleries to enjoy. With one of Madrid's main avenues on your doorstep, the slight downside is you will hear some street noise here, but it's easily fixed with some earplugs if you're a light sleeper. We have to say, we love the views over Plaza Villa de París from this home. The kitchen is well-equipped, so you can cook some homemade meals or let your host arrange a private chef to create some of your favourite tapas dishes.

A light and beautiful home, the space combines cosy comfort with a youthful vibe. The living areas have wooden beams and whitewashed walls, but added to the style are pop-art paintings and Coca-Cola memorabilia. Homely touches include vases filled with flowers and the whitest of linen in the bedrooms. In the morning, throw open the tall windows and shutters and let the sounds of the city waft through the rooms. Rustle up breakfast in the kitted-out kitchen, then move into the lounge and sip coffee while looking down on the activity below. There are so many things to do here but there’s no need to rush. Located in Madrid’s central Justicia neighbourhood, this practical studio-style apartment may be short on space, but it offers a prime position from which to soak up the best of the city’s sights. At full capacity, two guests will need to share the sofa bed which will make the living area a little tight. And the lack of natural light and views may not suit those looking for a more scenic stay. But for a base to drop your bags and explore nearby Gran Vía, El Retiro Park and Plaza Mayor, it’s a cosy spot that hits the mark.

This apartment in stately Eixample is a great base for Barcelona exploring. All your needs are covered here, with a kitchen perfect for light meals and even an office space if you have work to do. The terrace is the first thing that strikes you about Sail-Shade, so let’s not dwell on that. The living room is lovely, and the rest of the place is very comfortable, if not particularly ground-breaking. The atmosphere is almost like a hotel – you have both a twenty-four-hour reception, and a daily cleaning service – but that also goes the other way. The flat is missing some of the character that you’d expect if it were actually someone’s home.

Right in the heart of Madrid, this contemporary apartment is in a top-notch location for exploring. Step out the front door and you'll be straight into the city's hustle and bustle – buzzing Gran Vía is two minutes on foot, with Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor walkable in under ten. Whether you fancy sightseeing, shopping or sampling the local cuisine, this is the place to be, with restaurants, boutiques and all the landmarks within easy. 

When you're not taking advantage of this super-central locale, relax back at home with a glass of Spanish vino. Hues of bold yellow, crisp white and sleek black give this chic pad a pop of personality – a perfect reflection of the dazzling modern art piece hanging proudly on the living room wall. Elsewhere, clever Japanese-style doors make the most of the natural light, so although the rooms are a bit small, they're all quite stylish. We're not going to lie – the kitchen, in particular, is pretty compact, but with Madrid's many eateries on your doorstep, we doubt you'll do much cooking.

Looking directly out over Plaza de Chueca, Cuadro is in the middle of the action. The two balconies bring loads of natural light into the living room, and they have double glazing, which keeps out the majority of the noise (you might still get a bit though – such is the nature of the centre of Madrid). It would be nice to have some sort of view from the bedrooms, but having the windows facing internally does mean that they’re calmer than the living room, and in the long run, that’s more important.

Our favourite spot, however, is the private balcony with its views over the city’s rooftops. Sit here with your morning coffee while catching some Spanish rays or take in breathtaking sunset views over a glass of Spanish wine. Outside of your home, your Chueca locale is packed with cosy sidewalk cafes, tapas bars, restaurants and a vibrant bar scene, as well as boutiques, and popular markets like San Antón (a ten-minute walk) and Plaza del Dos de Mayo (a four-minute walk). Elsewhere there’s plenty of retail therapy to enjoy along Gran Vía (a fifteen-minute walk) and both the Royal Palace of Madrid and El Retiro Park are walkable in twenty-four minutes.

Attractions within walking distance include Plaza Canovas del Castillo with its Fountain of Neptune and vibrant La Plaza de Chueca. Back at this apartment, we love the French doors that open out onto Juliet balconies. There's a separate, compact but well-equipped kitchen for creating some tasty tapas, too. This home is ideal for couples or business travellers seeking an elegant base in a fantastic location.

Heart of Madrid Haven

Sitting in the popular Chueca neighbourhood, this bright studio apartment is in an excellent location to explore the Spanish capital. Close to lots of shops, restaurants and cultural institutions, it’s a great option if you’re in Madrid to experience some of the vibrant city life. 

This home may be on the small side, but it certainly packs a punch. With a sleek kitchen and hotel-style bedroom, all your needs are taken care of. Your hosts have decorated it minimally but with a stylish hand – the highlight for us is the Scandi-inspired dining set. Look forward to retiring to the tucked-away bedroom nook after a busy day of landmark-hopping.

And speaking of landmarks, you won't have to travel far to see Barcelona's best. The beautifully-manicured El Retiro Park, complete with a rose garden and boating lake, is just a leisurely fifteen-minute stroll away. Walk through the triumphal Puerta de Alcalá to enter and enjoy a lazy afternoon in the gardens. From here, the world-famous Prado is within easy reach. Marvel at some of the country's best-known artworks before finding a traditional tapas bar nearby to while away the evening.

The Understudy

Earthy tones, comfy furnishing and big rooms – this apartment is a stylish choice for a couple or a solo traveller planning a longer than usual stay in the city. Walk to one of a handful of nearby museums or try out the nearby bistros and tapas bars.
