We challenge you to find a prettier apartment overlooking the Royal Palace of Madrid. This place is a real showstopper, with twin Juliet balconies opening over Plaza de Oriente Gardens. Bold, bright and just downright beautiful, it's dripping in character thanks to ornate cornice, traditional shuttered windows and classical furnishing. A riot of elegant colours and patterns, it couldn't be further from modern minimalism if it tried.

Once you've arrived and stared out of the window for long enough to take it all in, choose between the two pretty bedrooms – one decorated in calming greens, the other in vibrant terracotta. There's a grand, open-plan living space to keep everything sociable, and a kitchen with everything you'll need for cooking at home. But we suspect you'll be eating out much of the time – it would be rude not to when surrounded by some of the best cafes and restaurants in the city. And with most of the major attractions on your doorstep too, you'll have plenty to see and do.

If you love shopping, you’ll be happy to know that this apartment is just a few metres from Gran Vía. Other attractions a short stroll away include the Plaza de España and the Royal Palace of Madrid. This home is perfect for couples, single travellers and business professionals seeking an exceptional location. This apartment is within walking distance of an array of attractions, such as Parque Madrid Rio, Casa de Campo, the Royal Palace and La Almudena Cathedral. Of course, there are plenty of dining options to discover in the area, too. The apartment has a desk if you need to catch up on emails and a well-equipped kitchen for making some tapas. We have to say, we love the main bedroom with its dressing room and en-suite. This home is a great choice whether you’re here for leisure or work.

This is an elaborate home that impresses with the broad strokes as well as fine ones. An enviable structure with high ceilings and big windows is filled with custom-made furniture that leaves plenty of space to move around. We loved the use of space that puts desks, chairs and bold art pieces in unexpected places – against all odds, it works.

You’re on the edge of the square where pavement cafés spill out onto the cobbles and the porticoed buildings date back to the 16th century when this was the centre of Old Madrid. The surrounded streets are packed with late-night tapas joints and buzzing bars. Or, head to the fresh produce and street food market, Mercado de San Miguel, a three-minute walk away to bring back some tasty local treats to your bijou abode.

While this space is compact there is enough room to feel comfortable. You’ll be able to whip quick and delicious snacks in the well-equipped kitchenette and enjoy them at the elegant dining table. This can also serve as a great spot to catch up on any work you might have to do during your stay. 

Outside your cosy nest, you’ll find yourself right in the heart of Madrid, with most of its iconic sights within walking distance. If you feel like staying local, La Latina has got you covered with a wide range of dining and entertainment options.

What a great location this apartment has in Madrid. The Royal Palace is just seven minutes on foot, while the Almudena Cathedral and the Plaza Mayor are within walking distance, too. As you'd expect from such a central location, you will hear some city noise while staying here. After all that exploring, you can sit in this home's shared courtyard and get your breath back. Inside, we love the living area's double-height ceilings and galleried landing, and there's a desk here if you need to catch up on work. We'd say the adjacent ground-floor bedroom isn't fully private, as it's a cubicle room with three-quarter-height walls – otherwise, this is a great home for couples, a family or business colleagues.

Simple and practical, this home may not have much in the way of entertainment or flashy amenities, but it offers a great location from which to explore Madrid’s sights. A short walk from the Royal Palace of Madrid and within easy reach of Plaza Mayor and Gran Vía, it’s a central, functional base for those looking to spend most of their time venturing about the city. When you are at home, however, you’ll find a cheerful feature wall in the open-plan living area and a handy dining nook for when you’re not out sampling the local tapas bars. And while the main bedroom is a little cramped, the home has the benefit of two bathrooms – certain to speed up any morning ahead of a busy itinerary.

So that's some of the sights to see in and around the area, but what about where you'll be staying? Stay Wild isn’t the most inspiring home in our Madrid Collection. The decoration is a bit on the generic side and we’re definitely not ecstatic about the fake plants. All of this can be forgiven though, with its location just moments from Plaza Mayor. The balconies offer views onto Calle Mayor and even a glimpse of Casa de Campos. This makes it ideal for those in search of a functional base to explore the city.

Stay Wild

In the heart of Madrid, just a few metres away from Plaza Mayor and within walking distance of Puerta del Sol, this city apartment couldn't be better located. Keep in mind that some noise should be expected here, but we think it's a small price to pay for this central spot. You'll find a great selection of restaurants on your doorstep if you'd like to sample the local cuisine, but if you'd prefer to dine in, the kitchen is well-equipped for homemade tapas.

Furnished with attention to detail and an appreciation for natural materials, this home knows how to make the best out of its assets. While the two balconies make sure that there's plenty of light in the living room and kitchen, wooden details in each room add to a coherent style that is most obviously expressed through the exposed wooden beams. We felt that the two bedrooms could benefit from an update, but the living room with the open-plan kitchen is one of the most stylish spaces we've seen in Madrid so far. 

The Byzantine

There are plenty of tourist attractions within walking distance of this home. Go for riverside walks at the Parque Madrid Rio nearby, or visit the zoo and amusement park at Casa de Campo. Other places of interest include the Royal Palace and La Almudena Cathedral. There are plenty of eateries to sample, too, or head back to this apartment and cook some tapas dishes. All in all, we'd say this home is ideal for a business professional, solo traveller or couple.

This bright and comfortable apartment is just a stone’s throw from the Royal Palace of Madrid. The official residence of the Head of State is open to the public, so you can explore the spot where centuries of Spanish history took place. The apartment is also just in front of the Sabatini Gardens, and 100 metres from Príncipe Pio train station. Plaza de España is only a five-minute walk away, too. Two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room, so things might feel a little crowded – you’re unlikely to be spending much time at home though.

Found in the heart of Madrid, only minutes away from the Royal Palace, the iconic Plaza Mayor, and the Catedral de la Almudena, this home charms with a maximalist approach. Expect gallery walls, a bold colour palette, and an enticing blend of old and new. 

The sleek kitchen might be compact, but with enough space to cobble a light breakfast together. Enjoy it at the striking marble dining table before setting off for a day out in the city. Explore the vibrance of the city – a trait it happily shares with the home – stopping off at cafes and restaurants for lunch when not appreciating the art at a gallery or jumping on public transport to get to another landmark. 

Return to the cosy sofa and fireplace for comfort after a day out, or retreat to your bedroom, where you can get comfortable with a cup of coffee and a good book. This apartment’s historic building is in keeping with its pretty surroundings. An avant-garde-style entrance hall greets you on arrival and just beyond this, the living room is big and bright, courtesy of classic-style windows. There’s dining for the whole group around the antique oak table and the living area is decked out with all mod cons, including a PS4, for evenings in. Should you need to work remotely, the dedicated office room has video calls covered.

The mostly white colour scheme lets all the small design elements express themselves well, while enlarging the space with the abundance of natural light. We loved the wire art pieces around this home and the minimalist kitchen.

What this compact apartment lacks in size, it makes up for in style. Cool and contemporary, we think it works best for solo travellers, couples, and digital nomads – especially those keen to explore Madrid on foot. The living space has funky neon signs and industrial-chic accents. Though snug, the kitchen is well-suited to rustling up light bites – there's also a high-top table that can be used as a work-from-home space. The cherry on top is the location in La Latina. You'll find restaurants and tapas bars aplenty here, plus all the must-see landmarks like Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace are about a ten-minute walk away.

There are plenty of attractions within a short walk of this apartment. You’ll find the Royal Palace and the Plaza Mayor, as well as the Museo de San Isidro and Jardín de las Vistillas. The neighbourhood is also well-connected by public transport to the rest of the city. After a busy day, this apartment has a spacious open-plan living space to relax in – it’s well-lit by two sets of French doors. Two of the bedrooms are en-suite and there’s a great family bathroom with a freestanding bathtub, too.

While this home features stylish and contemporary designs, it lacks natural daylight – so it is best suited to those who intend to spend much of their time out and about in the city. It's also worth noting that the bunk beds are situated in the hallway, so we think these beds would be better suited to children.

After the plates are cleared, plan your itinerary at the dining table. We recommend starting with the Royal Palace, a mere ten-minute walk from your doorstep. If you’d like to stretch your legs a little further, it’s a thirty-minute stroll to El Retiro Park. Pause for a coffee on the buzzing Calle Cava Baja before picking a spot to bask in the sunshine beside El Retiro Lake.

Centrally located in Madrid’s vibrant Lavapiés neighbourhood, this practical apartment offers plenty in the way of nearby sights, with the Royal Palace of Madrid within walking distance, as well as the lively barrio of La Latina. The space itself is compact and there’s not much natural light here. You’ll want to pack light and leave your main meals up to the many nearby restaurants due to the small kitchenette too. But as a functional base for sightseeing aplenty, this pocket-sized pad does nicely.

Shifting Gears has clearly been designed by someone with an eye for interiors. Even though the footprint is pretty small, the space has been manipulated cleverly to make it feel much bigger. Some of the design is more what you’d expect to find in Copenhagen than in Madrid (the wall-mounted bike feels like a particular candidate for an Instagram post). There’s even a balcony, which although too small for socialising, has a lovely view out over La Latina.

You'll be in good company with a stay at this elegant apartment, overlooking one of Madrid's most iconic baroque churches and with the emblematic Royal Palace just around the corner. With so many hotspots on your doorstep, it's no surprise this place is slap bang in Madrid's Centro district. When it's time to explore though, parking is available and public transport is close by, but you won't need a car to get the most out of your stay.
