We can imagine lazy starts followed by freshly-brewed coffee at the dining table, right next to the statement fireplace. Unfortunately not in working order anymore, the design of the old hearth is still a beautiful focal point to the dining space. Scramble eggs in the minimal kitchen to enjoy alongside fresh croissants, cheese, and caffeine before getting ready for a day of exploration. 

Venture to Cadran Solaire – only minutes away by car – where you can hike the trails and explore the native foliage. In Nérac, about fifteen minutes away, you’ll find the night market and open-air cinema, but it’s also a great place to grab a bite to eat during the day. 

On those days where you find your itinerary completely clear, you’ll delight in the peace on offer at this home. Open the curved doors of the living room and read on the sofa, or head outside where you can walk the grounds until you find the perfect spot for an impromptu picnic. This immense castle may have nine bedrooms and a four-hectare estate, but it retains its 13th-century character (along with corresponding low doorways). Originally built by a Cathar Lord, it’s now owned by a sculptor whose work is scattered across the grounds. The 86-square-metre Knights’ Hall with library was made for banquets, so bring your best mead and tuck into a mediaeval meal you’ll never forget. There’s also a separate 4-bedroom cottage on the grounds, which can be hired for an additional fee.

Curl up here after you’ve kindled a fire and let time be the last thing on your mind as you finally get to the book of poetry you’ve been meaning to read for the longest time. Get lost in the pages until lunch where you can take to the compact kitchenette to prepare light bites, or head out to one of the local eateries if you’re not in the mood to cook. 

On the upper floor you’ll find generous bedrooms and a bathroom, but it’s the room that opens out on the balcony that you’ll want to call your own for the duration of your stay. It not only has ample space and light, but we bet you can already see yourself standing on the balcony with a cup of coffee at sunrise. It’s also, coincidentally, the perfect location for a bit of last minute stargazing before turning in for the night. 

The area, as you’ll be able to determine from the view, is inescapably beautiful and you can admire some of the natural wonders by hiking the trails in the area. Baqueira Beret, the nearest ski lift, is just over 18 miles away and Luchon Golf Course is just under 6 miles.

A beautifully historical home, this artist's mansion in the cathedral town of Condom (yes, that's the real name of its village!) invites guests to experience authentic French charm from the heart of Gascony. Revealing a picturesque Italian-style garden setting with sculptures, a fountain, and a private swimming pool, out here, you'll find the perfect spot for a morning coffee or evening aperitif (Armagnac is the drink of the region). 

Despite the home's sense of history, there is also a feeling of space and minimalism, allowing you to relax in refined and rustic surroundings. The creative touches owe credit to the owner (an artist), who adds personal details such as Murano glass light fittings and original sculptures. Period furnishings pay homage to the maison's beautiful original features and bring a sense of grandeur to the minimal styling. 

Whether you rustle up your own feasts in the kitchen's wood fire or have a private chef come and do the honours – sharing delicious group meals here is an absolute must here. Our favourite dining spot of the home is the candle-lit 19th-century Orangerie. Oh and there's even an on-site wine cellar. 

Explore the Gers countryside, discovering idyllic villages such as Montréal, Fourcès and Larressingle – just a short drive away. In the warmer months, we recommend hiring a little motorboat and gliding along the river. The more athletic type might prefer kayaking or canoeing – and if you have food on the brain, take a stroll into the local village to check out the atmospheric weekly farmer's market and cosy restaurants.

Lovingly restored between 1998 and 2008, this beautiful, riverbank castle dates all the way back to the 1520s – not that you’d be able to tell when setting foot inside. Though you can definitely feel the weight of its storied past – and also see it in the exposed beams, chandeliers, and statement fireplaces – this home also feels fresh and opulent instead of stuffy. 

Find yourself romanticising life as you stroll around the sprawling green garden, making your way slowly towards the riverbank where you can gaze out over the water. Sit by the fire with a book of poetry, retreat to the library for quiet contemplation, take tea in the drawing room, and peruse the wine selection in the cellar. 

Enjoy chef-prepared meals in the dining room – the original guard's room where the castle’s personnel came to enjoy the heat from the fireplace with a cooked meal – or dine alfresco if you’d prefer to savour every moment of fresh air. Gather around the swimming pool for drinks at sundown and take a midnight dip in the pool. 

Stay out long after to enjoy the clear night sky before retreating to any of the bathrooms where you can unwind in the bubble bath with a glass of wine. Retire to one of the breathtaking suites for a peaceful night’s sleep before waking up to explore all this home, and the region has to offer.

Once Upon a Chateau

Straight out of a belle époque style painting is this large chateau not far from Toulouse and big enough for the entire extended family. With views of the neighbouring vineyards from the home’s balconies, you will feel truly immersed in the grape harvest at the right time of year. Eat breakfast on the veranda while the kids float in the pool and enjoy days walking in the heart of wine country. Cycle into to nearby Gaillac for fresh cheese to enjoy with wine on the terrace and various herbs collected from the garden. The wildlife you can spot on the property was a highlight for us. Keep your eyes peeled for roe deer in the morning and listen for nightingales to sing you to sleep.
