Yes, this home in the middle of the Tarn countryside dates back to the 19th century and is surrounded by 32 hectares of idyllic meadows, but this isn't the rustic getaway you might assume from first impression. How could it be so when the list of amenities at guests' disposal is so impressive?

Given the rather enviable climate that this corner of South France enjoys, you probably won't be surprised to learn that many of these lie outside. The first one that's likely to grab your attention is the swimming pool, but wander around a bit more and you'll discover everything from a sauna and six-person Jacuzzi to a tennis court and bar in the poolhouse for afterwards.

The home itself still retains an air of grandeur – all high ceilings, parquet floors and chandeliers. There are plenty of large communal spaces in which to gather together, but a fair few more private spots to escape the group for a peaceful moment. Chief among them is the rather elegant freestanding tub in the master bathroom.

One thing you'll quickly appreciate here is just how tranquil the locale is, with even the nearest village sitting 6km away. The surrounding area is peppered with charming towns and scenic hillside walking routes, while Toulouse is only 55km away, too.

This immense castle may have nine bedrooms and a four-hectare estate, but it retains its 13th-century character (along with corresponding low doorways). Originally built by a Cathar Lord, it’s now owned by a sculptor whose work is scattered across the grounds. The 86-square-metre Knights’ Hall with library was made for banquets, so bring your best mead and tuck into a mediaeval meal you’ll never forget. There’s also a separate 4-bedroom cottage on the grounds, which can be hired for an additional fee.

If you're hoping to experience this mountainous region, no matter the season, this comfortable home in the little village of Gessa is the perfect base. Part of a small complex of similar homes, it's beautifully styled, spacious and cosy for either a family or a few friends sharing. If you're here to hike in summer or ski in winter, it's well placed for the Baqueira resort, with pretty Salardu just moments away by car.

Inside, it's a modern take on the traditional buildings of the area, with plenty of natural wood, stone and slate. A fireplace forms the focal point in the open-plan living space, with comfy sofas and patio doors opening out to a small private terrace. And a perfectly practical kitchen makes cooking at home a cinch.  

Mountain Breeze

This traditional Aranese building is big enough to host extended families or big groups of friends eager to explore the Pyrenees mountain range. It’s the perfect base for active holidays all year round – in the winter, skiers and snowboarders take to the pistes of Baqueira Beret ski resort. In the summer months, there are plenty of hiking opportunities. Walking through Vall de Boí will take you past ancient churches and idyllic scenery. Back at home, there are utensils for making fondue and raclette, and plenty of space to lounge and relax. Or, if you’d like to head out into the small city of Vielha, you’ll find restaurants and bars serving hearty local food around the Garona River. There are also plenty of shops, where you can pick up outdoor kit or handcrafted souvenirs – this area is famous for its wool.

There's something truly magical about this home's location in the listed Occitane village of Laurac. As well as being so isolated as to bring a pleasing sense of tranquillity, the hilltop position means that there are lovely views of verdant countryside from the terraces.

Speaking of which, the address benefits from two such standout outdoor spaces. On the second floor, glass doors open out to an alfresco dining area complete with a barbecue and a glorious panorama, while back down at the ground and thirty metres' walk from the home, there's a secret garden with a swimming pool surrounded by vegetation.

It's plain to see that a big chunk of your time here is going to be spent out in the open air, but you'll also be happy to hear that the interior doesn't disappoint when you finally retreat indoors. There's a rustic feel to the design, with large ceiling beams sitting above a traditional fireplace and smart wooden floors. That being said, it doesn't feel dated in the slightest – the kitchen is a modern update on the country-style quarters found in many of the region's properties.

When it comes to filling up an itinerary, the rural surroundings and wealth of routes can be explored on foot or horseback, or by bike or kayak. The medieval architecture in the town of Carcassonne only takes thirty-five minutes to reach in the car, too.

The Valley Forge

Jagged mountain peaks rear up in every direction, so it makes sense that the main living space is located on the top floor. A warming fireplace, soaring wood-clad walls and a sunset-facing balcony make for a welcoming space to return to after a day spent skidding down snow-covered slopes, hiking through fragrant forests, or enjoying white-knuckle mountain bike trails.

Elsewhere, its three bedrooms occupy the middle floor. At the same time, the entrance level features a fully equipped kitchen and dining area that leads directly onto a stone patio so you can treat yourself to alfresco feasts over the summer.

On your doorstep, the pretty village of Garós offers a surprisingly broad culinary choice, ranging from Peruvian to pizza. Jump in the car, and you can be in the picturesque Roman town of Vielha in approximately ten minutes in one direction and the ski resort of Baqueira in the other.

Casa d'Aran

Grab your ski gear and head straight to the slopes from this six-bedroom, six-bathroom paradise in Naut Aran. Just a five-minute walk to the Esquirós chairlift, you’re right by the action. Two units combined to make one, so there’s double the living space for big groups to spread out. Two kitchens, two living rooms and two double rooms (each with its own jacuzzi tub) means double the flexibility to plan around a large group. If you prefer to cook together, the American-style kitchen has everything you need, and the second kitchen can act as a work-in pantry. Bring the two halves together over a meal, or gather the group either of the comfortable living rooms, where floor to ceiling windows let in beautiful mountain views. 

Double Slopes

This large, 4-bedroom apartment sits in an enviable location right next to the Baqueira ski lift. You can practically roll out of bed and onto the slopes (though we suggest wrapping up first). Two bedrooms come with bunk beds – possibly a little cramped for adults but children will love the sleepover experience. The large, open-plan living and dining area allows your group to spread out. White clapboard-style walls and Scandi-chic light wood touches keep and calm vibe after a day tearing up the slopes. Huddle by the fireplace, watch winter sports on the TV or gather around the dining table with a hot mug of tea. Two parking spaces and a heated ski equipment room are included in the price of booking.

By the Gondola

At the foot of the Bequeira-Beret slopes, this cosy apartment is ideal for snow lovers. It's on the small side, but there are two bathrooms and plenty of room for a small family or friend group. Both bedrooms have access to a small balcony – while there isn't room to sit outside, you're able to enjoy the fresh air. You'll have access to a ski locker for storing equipment, and the cable car is right by the car park, meaning you don't have to walk far when you're planning on hitting the slopes.

For a spot of culture, the magnificent eleventh century Santa Maria Church is a six-minute walk from the house.

In the winter months, the Baqueira/Beret ski resort is seven kilometres away. It’s widely acknowledged to be Spain’s best ski resort, with 167km of pistes. After hitting the slopes, head to one of the lively apres-ski spots in the area, or come home to Arties for tapas and wine, before taking a relaxing bubble bath and curling up by the fire.

In the warmer months, we recommend hiring a little motorboat and gliding along the river. The more athletic type might prefer kayaking or canoeing – and if you have food on the brain, take a stroll into the local village to check out the atmospheric weekly farmer's market and cosy restaurants.

With the gondola up to Baquiera slopes just outside your building, this place is practically ski-in/ski-out. A heated equipment room is included with your booking, so there’s no need to clutter up the beautiful apartment with skis and salopettes. It still retains some of that old-fashioned ski chalet charm with the stone fireplace, the perfect spot for a post-ski hot cocoa. If you’re not cooking in the kitchen, head to the traffic-free town centre for tapas and Tempranillo in this known foodie town. After your night out, sink into beds with warm, fluffy pillows.

The apartment is cosy and comfortable, with everything you’ll need for a break. After a day spent on the slopes, it’s wonderful to return to a home as welcoming as this. Curl up around the fireplace with a mug of cocoa, or sip a glass of red wine on the balcony while enjoying the mountain views. In the evening, whip up a comforting dish to tuck into at the dining table, and revel in the warmth of this utterly delightful home. 

The cable car is within easy reach, so it’s easy as can be to breathe in the mountain air. The skiing is fantastic but in summer there’s still plenty to keep you entertained. Lace up your hiking boots and explore the trails of the Arán Valley – this is such a beautiful part of the world.

Visit the stunning Saint Michael's church or stop by the Museo del Vanne de Aran to discover the area's history and heritage. Hike the famous peak of Aneto and admire the views from the highest point in the Pyrenees. The Palai de Geu ice skating rink is just a few steps away from the apartment. Finish the day with a delicious meal at one of the nearby restaurants, or grab a takeaway and cosy up by the warmth of the roaring fire after a busy day.
