Even though this large home sits in the middle of a golf course in rural Brittany, there's plenty to keep guests occupied even if they're not keen followers of the sport.

Take the wonderful wellness space, for example. Surrounded by large windows that look out to the peaceful grounds, there's both a heated swimming pool and a Jacuzzi to recline in once you've done a length or two. If that sounds a little too sedate, there's a huge range of games, from foosball and ping-pong to a petanque court and an arcade machine on which you'll find over 1500 video games. We're not saying you'll be praying for rainy days, but they won't be the catastrophe they might be at other addresses.

At the same time, the huge garden offers lots of space and equipment for enjoying spells of sunny weather. You can embrace a French tradition on the petanque court, bounce about on the trampoline or do nothing more strenuous than read on the terrace – perhaps with dinner cooking away on the barbecue in the background.

The upper floor has two bedrooms with sloping ceilings and rooflight, one with a French bed (160 cm) and another with two beds. There is also an open gallery on this floor. In an old house right on the seafront, this little home is the perfect place to relax and recharge your batteries in Brittany. Just half an hour from Saint-Malo, the loft apartment has character features like sloping ceilings, heavy oak beams and partially exposed stone walls, but at the same time it's been modernised with a bright white paint job, herringbone wood floors and skylights. Surprisingly open and bright, we particularly love the living space with its sea view window. The kitchen is perfectly well-equipped for cooking light meals at home but it's only a five-minute walk to the town centre with its bakeries, restaurants and bars (it's known for its oysters, by the way). Keen walkers will be able to explore the local hiking trails and there are all sorts of water sports on offer nearby too.

Would you like to stay in a painter's nineteenth-century home? If you book La Peinture, you most certainly can. This home is part of local history here in Villerville, but its history isn't the only reason we love it. Recently refurbished to preserve its charm and whimsical nature, this home is a great place to visit if you need a bit of inspiration. As you'll be staying right on the beach, La Peinture will give you plenty of sea breeze and views to start your day, so get up early, grab a coffee, and sit on the terrace to catch the sunrise. Once you're ready to explore, take a walk on the beach and if the weather is nice, dip your toes into the sea. You can pack light if you're here to swim and work on your tan as you can always return to your gorgeous residence for a snack. If you want to do a bit of sightseeing, visit the nearby towns of Honfleur and Deauville and walk the cobbled streets. when you return, whip up a meal in the well-equipped kitchen to replenish your energy, then organise a movie night with the help of the big flat-screen TV. 

La Peinture

This adorable home has everything to suggest it's tucked away in a French village, but it's in the heart of cosmopolitan Rennes. Even the enchanting courtyard will have you convinced you've stepped into a storybook world, not at the foot of St. Peter's Cathedral.

When stepping into this secret garden courtyard, we're practically waiting for Gaston and the townspeople to burst out of the windows and break into song. The sprawling foliage and quaint buildings provide a place where time stands still and you can break away from the thoughts of daily life. First impressions count, and this one will be lasting. 

Inside the cosy home, the owner has thoughtfully cloaked the interior in a modern preference for mid-century design, with a warm-toned colour palette that is vibrant yet soothing. And with plenty of ambience-setting lighting, this home exudes a comforting homeliness. We imagine you'll want to spend a lot of your time soaking up the place – preparing dinner in the well-equipped kitchen to be enjoyed around the beautiful dining table, before getting snug on the plush sofas with a warming hot chocolate beneath the ceiling's original beams. 

While it's easy to spend a lot of time in this calming cottage, it's only right to explore when you're in such a fantastic location. Whether you want to see the city on foot, by bike, by bus, or by metro, it's all readily available here. You're in the heart of Rennes' historical centre, away from the hustle and bustle but close to its charming cobbled streets and historical sights.

Located in a former hotel, this apartment has breathtaking sea views. We particularly love the main bedroom with its four-poster bed and ocean vistas (there's also an office area here if you want to write a travel blog or catch up on work). In fact, there are sea views to enjoy from most rooms. The highlight, though, for us, is the private garden area around the apartment – you have a terrace and garden furniture for alfresco meals – it's a great space overlooking the Grande Plage, as well as the Pointe de la Garde.

Spend idyllic days on the Grande Plage on your doorstep or indulge in some water sports such as surfing, paddleboarding or take some catamaran lessons. If you fancy exploring further afield, then Cape Fréhel, to the west, is perfect for bird watchers, or the nearby charming resort of Saint-Cast-le-Guildo has a small port and coastal paths.

This home in Saint-Jean-du-Bois caught our eye after it was recommended by a member of the Plum Guide community. An elegant country chateau, it's perfectly plonked in the heart of the Loire Valley, with Le Mans just a twenty-minute drive away. Here you'll feel like nobility the moment you pull up in the drive. Sat in an eye-wateringly huge 450-acre estate, this place has impressive features by the boatload. Speaking of boats, you can fish or row round the lake, or hop on one of the bikes provided to peruse the countryside, challenge someone to a game of tennis, or dive into the beautiful heated pool. Inside, the home is a super-stylish mix of stripped-back country chic and lux modern design. Each of the nine bedrooms is decorated to a theme, and there are roll-top baths to be found in some of the luxury bathrooms. This is one to savour with family, friends and a few glasses of local wine.

Once a home for horses, this former stable is perfectly placed for a visit to Rennes. Tucked nicely near Thabor Gardens, it allows you to be close to the city yet far enough away from the hustle and bustle that you can enjoy some much-needed quiet time whenever you retreat back home. 
 
With nods to its history through exposed beams and brickwork, this recently renovated home has been beautifully modernised, while retaining its charm. The sleek, modern kitchen is a delight to cook in, should you decide an evening at home is preferred over dining out. Climb the spiral staircase and you’ll find two comfortable bedrooms to choose from, both of which guarantee a blissful night’s sleep. A fairly neutral palette is broken up throughout the home with pops of colour, giving the whole space a calming, cosy vibe.

Our favourite part of this home is the terrace. Quite the sun trap during the day, it’s a peaceful place to retreat to as evening sets in. Grab yourself a bottle of fine French wine and settle down on the sofas with your loved ones. As night falls and a blanket of stars breaks out above, listen to the quiet chatter of your loved ones and feel yourself relax. This is where memories are made. 

Once Upon a Stable

Taken in and of itself, this apartment in Saint-Aubin-sur-Meris is perfectly pleasant. The stark white walls and wood floors feel smart and contemporary, while the flashes of blue and some eye-catching accoutrements – the lighting fixtures and funky stools, to single out a couple – stop it from feeling too anonymous.

However, it's the home's outdoor space and excellent location that really distinguishes it from competitors. Along with two other apartments in the building, guests share a pretty garden bordered by flowerbeds and this looks out to the town's beach, which sits just across the street.

As well as offering opportunities for watersports and relaxation, the beaches of Saint-Aubin-sur-Meris hold significance for the pivotal role that the region played during D-Day. The city of Caen is only half an hour away in the car and offers a wealth of attractions, including William the Conqueror's castle and a selection of contemporary galleries.

For a Brittany beach stay like no other, this contemporary dwelling has it all. Nautical style, modern amenities and space to stretch out and relax after long days of swimming and sunbathing. And did we mention that sea view? 

Stays here are as laidback and lovely as the photos suggest. Wake up each morning with a full French breakfast on your cute dining set. Open the floor-to-ceiling patio doors and breathe in the sea air from your sunny terrace. Head down to the beach, located just a stone’s throw away, and paddle, play or put your feet up. Then return for a relaxing evening in, and sit out on the deckchairs with a bottle of French wine as you watch the sunset.

If you want to venture out beyond the beach, you’re also ideally located to explore Pléneuf-Val-André, a vibrant seaside resort boasting quaint cafes, elegant restaurants and lively bars. Bienassis Castle is based just a short drive away too if you fancy soaking up some French history. Or, take a trip up the coastline to explore more rugged shores and golden sands.


Nautical Nest

This slice of tropical modernity comes as quite a surprise in a town known for its medieval ramparts and cobbled streets. A timber cabin-style home that wouldn't look out of place in the world's most exotic corners, it's even set in a private garden that's inspired by the jungle. With three bedrooms and a family-friendly open layout, it's stylish, spacious and smart.

Inside, the wood floors and white walls are calm and neutral, with comfy furnishings and lots of house plants. There's a sleek contemporary kitchen with an island where you can sit on the stools and chat as someone rustles up dinner, and both an indoor and an outdoor dining table.

And it's outside where we think you'll be spending most of your time if you're here in the summer months. Step out of your sliding doors and straight onto the deck, partly shaded with a sail over the comfy loungers. And, you guessed it, this place also comes with a private, heated pool. 

Just hanging out here is pretty perfect in our opinion but when you want to head out and explore, the town is less than half an hour away on foot or a five-minute drive. Book a nearby boat trip, visit St Malo or discover some of the sandy beaches on the coast.
