With a truly enviable location on the Pyrénées-Atlantiques overlooking the endless blue of the Atlantic Ocean, this 1930s-style villa was made for lazy summer afternoons.

There are a plethora of spots to sit and soak up the sunshine, whether that's surveying the surroundings from the balcony, tucking into dinner on the terrace or reading in the peaceful gardens. If this all sounds a little too inactive, you're more than welcome to notch up a couple of lengths in the swimming pool or hone your forehand on the tennis court.

The interior feels bright and cooling thanks to the white walls, tiled flooring and French doors. An extensive collection of colourful artwork is sure to catch the eye, although it must be said that sports fans will much prefer the foosball table.

When it comes to beaches, both Grand Plage and Plage d'Erromardie sit only twenty minutes' walk from the home, while the portside restaurants and market of St Jean de Luz take slightly longer. The resort town of Biarritz is just a half-hour drive away, too.

A small balcony looks out over hills and other homes and is our favourite spot for assessing the conditions for the day's adventures. If surfing is on the cards, it's less than a 10-minute drive to Bidart beach, while Biarritz and its glamorous facade is just 15. Not in the mood for that much activity? We suggest padding down to the communal pool for lengths, before heading back to the terrace for a glass of something icy.

If you asked a child to draw a fairytale castle, this is probably what they would come up with – ivy-dappled turrets and a rose-pink hue. Acres of tree-filled grounds surround this home, where you’ll find a private swimming pool for lazy days on loungers and a tennis court with an automatic ball machine if you want to practice your serve. There’s plenty of room for the group to dine outside, admiring the pretty facade of this historic abode.

Travel south in France until you’ve nearly reached the border to Spain and that’s where you’ll find this little home located in the coastal commune of Anglet. With a reputation for Atlantic surfing beaches – there are eleven to be exact – this is where you want to retreat to for a properly beachy holiday. The home echoes its location with hues of white and blue, and a particular crispness that’s definitely helped along by yawning balcony doors and the breeze entering through it. 

The kitchen is great for prepping cheese platters, or a quick omelette, but we recommend venturing out to one of the cafes for a breakfast before hitting the beach. For a different kind of adventure, you might also find yourself on a hiking path, playing a round of golf, or kicking back as you wait for fish to bite when you’re out fishing. 

Although there is a casino and a number of night clubs for evening entertainment, we do recommend catching the sunset from the cosy balcony first.

With Plage des Bourdaines' vast golden beach stretching out before you just a ten-minute walk away, this tree-lined apartment is an ideal base for groups of friends or families looking to soak up the delightful sea breeze of Seignosse. Perched above a gorgeous stretch of coast, this Hossegor retreat combines stunning views with close proximity to the beach and the city centre. In this surfer's paradise, their tastes are well-catered for – you're far more likely to grab something healthy than anything with chips in the nearby eateries. We think the home is better suited to a family or firm friends, given any nighttime trips to the bathroom involve using the only bedroom's ensuite. And with free parking available, you're not only confined to the local beaches – drive to the forest at Landes, or the nearby city of Bordeaux. 

Huxley's Hideaway

Tucked away in the French countryside, this charming renovated farmhouse provides the ideal retreat for families or groups of friends who want a picturesque escape. While away the hours drinking the finest wines in the open-plan living space with its authentic exposed beams and tiled floors, or head outside and watch the sunset on the vine-draped terrace. 

In the mornings, we recommend grabbing some freshly-baked baguettes from the nearby bakery.
