This home is an Art Deco themed showstopper that would delight any aspiring flapper. With bespoke 1920's themed furniture and original retro features, a stay here is like stepping back in time to the Jazz Age. We especially love the mirrored cocktail bar, worthy of any speakeasy, and the impressive home cinema with its red bucket chairs and huge TV hidden behind a theatrical curtain. The kitchen is a retro daydream with its restored English Rose units and the bedrooms continue the Art Nouveau theme to the letter (the dressing table in the master bedroom is just like something your grandmother would’ve had). What takes this flat from gimmick to somewhere truly special though is its history as the former home of playwright Sir Terrance Rattigan who wrote many famous works set in the roaring 20s. The location is the bee’s knees too. You’re a five-minute stroll from Brighton’s pebbled seafront and a twenty-minute walk from the city centre. Spend your days exploring the artisan cafés, flea markets and promenading on the front before mixing a highball at the bar and settling in for a showing of a Golden Age movie.

Realistically, there's only one place to start with at this apartment and that's the gorgeous sea view. The best spot to appreciate this is from the living room that benefits from three curved Georgian windows, but Brighton Pier can also be spotted from two of the bedrooms, too. As well as making this home a great vantage point for catching the city's famous starling murmurations, it also brings in copious amounts of natural light, which dances satisfyingly off the wooden floor and cleansingly white walls. Renovated in 2020, the interior feels thoroughly modern, but the choice of classic furnishings, including the antique dining table, pays homage to Brighton's long and regal history. It's also easy to get a flavour of the city's heritage from the fabulous location in the Kemptown neighbourhood. But it’s right here at home where we think you’ll be spending most of your time. From alfresco barbecues on the vast garden terrace, sundowners on the mezzanine balcony, and relaxing in the hot tub, to large sit-down dinners indoors overlooking the downs, this house is well suited for entertaining. And there’s heaps of space to spill out in the generously sized bedrooms – spread out over two floors and united by a tasteful mix of contemporary and rustic interiors. Lofty high ceilings, polished concrete flooring (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty), and sleek architectural glazing make quite the first impression. While a bespoke shaker kitchen with all the mod-cons (think Everhot range cooker and wine cooler) and beautifully curated objet’s de art bring character and soul. After bracing walks in the surrounding hills, kick off your muddy shoes in the boot room and sink into the sumptuous sofas to soak up those awe-inspiring views with freshly brewed coffee. You could easily while away the whole day and night diving into the North Laine's buzzing hub of independent artists, curiosity shops, and happening cafes and restaurants. But don't forget the city's other must-sees, starting at the eye-popping spectacle of The Royal Pavilion (seven minutes on foot). And there's always the kiss-me-quick pier (thirteen minutes on foot) for a spin and obligatory fish and chips – preferably in that order. 

When it's time to take five, you'll find an immaculately presented apartment awaiting. The care that your host, Helen, puts into the interior design of this home is impressive – that bespoke kitchen is a case in point. While over in the bedroom, one big hug of a king-sized bed awaits, along with a freestanding bathtub with room for two. And despite its central location, it feels surprisingly quiet here. So draw the blackout blinds and bag yourself a lie-in – in this famously hedonistic city, you might need it.

Although this three-storey home was only built in recent years, much of the interior design takes inspiration from retro trends. Many of the furnishings are mid-century in style and there are 1970s flourishes peppered about in the form of overhanging metallic lamps and swirly feature walls in the living rooms. That being said, the pristine white kitchen is as modern as they come, as are the bathrooms. Outside, guests get the benefit of not one, but two terraces, with space to cook, eat and relax. The location gives plenty of options for excursions in the great outdoors, too. It's possible to get on a footpath running alongside the River Adur in less than a minute on foot which is a great base for kayaking and paddleboarding, and leads to a 37-mile long track through the South Downs National Park. Shoreham Beach is a mere ten-minute walk via the high street which boasts an abundance of pubs, restaurants and shops, and the Brighton seaside only takes twenty-three minutes to reach in the car.

Away from your semi-secluded haven, the shingle beach at Saltdean offers you a chance to paddleboard or take a dip in the Grade II-listed art deco lido. Then, continue west along the coast, and you'll find yourself in the vibrant seaside town of Brighton in under half an hour. However, if you prefer to use your breaks as a chance to disconnect, the national park on your doorstep offers over 2,000 miles of rights of way so you can enjoy some quiet reflection as you hike through the hills.

Beach-lovers need only drive thirty minutes to reach the south coast. The house itself retains much of its Victorian charm, having been lovingly restored. We love the garden and the cosy wood burner for chillier evenings.
