From the open-plan lounge, fitted with a bespoke log burning fire, you can enjoy sweeping views of rolling green fields from the picturesque Juliet balcony. And on warm summer nights, head out to the large terrace and light up the barbecue. On your second patio, you’ll find a sun-drenched spot with comfy loungers for reclining and soaking up the sun. It’s also a perfect pad for surf fans, with an outdoor shower and a board storage area round the back. After riding the waves on the Cornish coast, there’s nothing better than coming home and cosying up by the fire with a tumbler of whisky in hand.

To top it all off, there are four beaches within walking distance, so you can select a different stretch of sand daily if you like to change it up or settle in your favourite spot if you're a creature of habit. If all that fresh air has sapped your energy, then there's standout food and thirst-quenching drinks flowing in Newquay's bars and restaurants, just a fifteen-minute walk away.

Sweet Nightingale

Kids and adults alike will be enchanted by this cottage nestled in the rolling green countryside. With a range of excellent amenities and plenty of space to enjoy, it's a great pick at any time of year.

The popular town of Newquay, renowned for its surfer community, is just a fifteen-minute drive away, and there are several beaches to explore from sandy shorelines to hidden coves. Mawgan Porth beach is a leisurely twenty-minute stroll from the home – on your way back why not enjoy a trip to the village pub? For the adrenaline fans among you, try your hand at cycling, hiking, wild swimming or kayaking in the local area.

Situated between Newquay and Padstow, on the breathtaking North Cornwall coast, this spectacular seaside retreat is far enough away to avoid the summer crowds yet close enough to offer easy access to both of these popular resorts.

A gate at the end of the garden leads out to a footpath down to the golden sands of the Sunday Times award-winning Mawgan Porth beach, which is particularly popular with families. The fact it's west-facing makes it popular with surfers of all abilities, though more advanced watermen will probably want to test their mettle down at nearby Fistral. Meanwhile, foodies will find plenty to tantalise their tastebuds in Padstow, less than ten miles away.

An added benefit is that the apartment itself has storage options for surfboards and bicycles, which gives you alternative ways to explore the Cornish coastline.

Rum & Raisin

If coastal walking is your thing, look no further. With the Gannel estuary, rugged coastal paths and the craggy Pentire Penninsula on your doorstep, this home is awash with a low-key, British seaside atmosphere. The buzz of Newquay beckons – stroll fifteen minutes or drive into town for fresh seafood restaurants, cosy pubs serving classic Cornish fare and independent boutiques, or wander ten minutes to Fistral Beach and sprawl out on the sand. Surfing, rock pooling, fishing, kayaking – the list of outdoor activities here are endless. Sunny mornings call for lazy coffees on that south-facing balcony leading off from the open concept living space to catch a glimpse of the sea. Meanwhile, little ones and furry friends can run off some energy on the lawns below, all under your watchful gaze. 

When the sea finally lures you in, spend your days exploring the awesome coastal path that leads to Newquay, Padstow and beyond (it goes right past here) or learning to surf down at the beach – it’s just 150 metres from your door. And you can easily wash down sandy surfing paraphernalia and paws with that hot après-surf shower when you head home.

If you like the idea of going eco-friendly for a while but don't want to completely give up on comforts, this cosy barn powered by renewable energy could just be a happy compromise. 

The renovated cob and stone property sits within six acres of idyllic riverside woodland and is built out of natural materials, including oak, lime, cob, pigmented clay plaster and locally sourced slate. Inside, there are a few rustic features, such as the exposed stonework and wood-burning fireplace, but otherwise, it's undeniably contemporary thanks to the conservatory, sleek kitchen and pristine bathrooms. The fact that it's powered by a wind turbine and a heat pump is pretty impressive, too.

Given the peace and tranquillity of the surrounding grounds, you'll be happy to hear that there's a natural swimming pool close to the home — shared only with the host, who lives on the site, and one other barn — as well as a barbecue and some spots for an alfresco feast. 

Although it feels like you're in splendid isolation at this address, you can head back to civilisation pretty swiftly if you wish. The town of Truro takes a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, while Perranporth Beach on the north and south Cornish coastlines can be reached in just under twenty-five.

Song of the Land

Spend idyllic days in the Cornish countryside when you stay at this recently converted barn, situated a twelve-minute drive from beautiful Padstow. Enjoy long walks on the South West Coast Path – the cliff tops at Park Head offer incredible views across to the sea stacks at Bedruthan Steps (a ten-minute ride away). Back at this wonderful barn – it's perfect for a family or a group of friends looking for a tranquil retreat. Inside, we were blown away by the rustic charm mixed with elegant modernism. We love the Delabole slate bathrooms, exposed stone walls and vaulted beams throughout this home. In fact, this place has been designed with socialising and entertaining in mind – it's a great space to spend quality time together. On chillier days, curl up in front of the cosy wood-burning stoves in the living room or den and settle in for an evening of board games with the family. There are four acres of grounds to explore here, including orchards and wildflower meadows. There's even an outdoor shower, so you can rinse off after visiting the beach – your lovely hosts have really thought of everything here.  Our favourite spot in the garden has to be the magical summerhouse – savour the spectacular views that stretch to the Atlantic Ocean or recline on the day bed and read a book. It's just one of the many fantastic features that make this home so very special.
