Accents of racing green and antiqued brass bring flow and a dash of luxury throughout the space and guide you upstairs to an exquisite bedroom with a gleaming slipper bath at its heart. Part of an exclusive estate set within 1.5 acres of grounds, you could feel a million miles from anywhere here. But you're not as remote as you may think. The footpath from your door leads to the charming village of Talkin. Grab a shift pint and hearty meal in the village inn, or mosey down to The Boathouse Cafe for lunch al fresco overlooking the tarn. When it's time to embrace the great outdoors, hire a rowing boat, paddleboard, or kayak to launch off the tarn. Tee off from the local golf course - it overlooks the cottages. Then take a stroll around the 1.3-mile tarn through the mature woodland. Or, you could stay tucked up at home and soak up those views from the private patio or beside the fire – it's a scene you'll never tire of.

It's easy to see why this stunning Georgian villa caught our eye – recently renovated, its chic interior exudes charm, garnering it plenty of attention and an appearance on national TV. We fell in love with the orangery, which is the perfect space for cooking (or having someone cook for you) and feasting. And each of the bedrooms has a unique design, adding lovely variety to your stay. The home is also an ideal base for hikers looking for an inviting homestead to return to after a ramble in the Lake District or North Pennines, while the local village houses an award-winning country pub.

Nestled amongst the east wing of a sprawling estate, this maisonette has plenty of room for families. Cosy and inviting with wooden beams and angled ceilings, this home is sure to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling when you arrive. Snuggle up on the Chesterfield sofas in front of the electric fire while your favourite movie plays on the DVD player. Rustle up delicious meals in the stylish kitchen, then gather around the dining table for family feasts, sharing stories and bottles of bubbly straight out of the wine fridge. All the bedrooms are roomy and traditionally styled, and with private en-suites, nobody will have to queue for the loo. But our favourite spot is the garden. After an alfresco lunch in the courtyard, wander the several acres of grounds and woodlands. The views are absolutely stunning – they stretch towards River Eden and to the Castle Carrock Fells, promising you a slice of that peaceful rural life. Keen cyclists can roam the country lanes by bike or just stroll along the river – viaduct towers, hidden caves and waterfalls are just a few things you'll discover. When your stomach starts rumbling, walk ten minutes into town for local ales and mouth-watering fare at the village pub. Both Carlisle and the Lake District are easily reached by car if you fancy a day out, though we're quite happy to while away our afternoons in Wetheral, exploring the countryside.

As you arrive, its stone walls and wooden balcony look gloriously rustic. You could even plan to arrive by boat and pull up to the private jetty. From every angle, the surroundings of this home are striking – leafy trees, the glistening lake, and rolling mountains across the water make this setting feel quite special. Inside, the traditional theme continues with chunky beams and vintage furniture. We love the glossy, lacquered wooden pieces in the lounge, as well as the understated chandelier bringing a romantic glow in the evening. The home's glorious traditional features - original stone floors, warm wooden beams, a roaring fireplace - are full of character, but it's the styling of this home that will make you feel at ease from the moment you arrive. In the welcoming living room, the exquisitely-soft turquoise sofa is the perfect place to while away the hours with a book from the well-stocked bookshelf, and Eastern-inspired touches (including Buddha statues) add to the sense of calm. The kitchen, with its white marble countertops and exposed stone walls, is the ideal spot to cook up a rib-sticking meal. Some of the Lake District’s most striking scenery can be found at Ullswater, with its mountainous landscape and unusual z-shaped, ‘ribbon lake’, which is the second largest in the region. But even better than simply visiting this beautiful spot, you can see it all from the windows of this lakeside home. Although it’s just a five-minute drive from the quaint town of Pooley Bridge, this home feels truly rural and isolated. Park up the 4x4 in the gravel drive and head into this warm and welcoming abode. Light up the wood-burning stove in the plush lounge, with its horseshoe sofa that can fit the entire family. Or you can even have your own private hideaway in the second sitting room, with yet another fireplace – this time a sleek, modern hearth set into the wall. For balmy English evenings, another space can be found outdoors, with your very own patio complete with comfy garden furniture. Alfresco drinking and dining will certainly be on the cards out here. While you can see the water from the comfort of your own home, it’s just a seven-minute walk down to Ullswater Marina.

The Ribbon Lake

Situated in a Grade II-listed building dating back to 1878, we can't help but swoon over this Alnwick apartment. It doesn't lack character, that's for sure – vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and antique knick-knacks like typewriters and old books are in abundance. We think it's the perfect blend of old and new, and nowhere is a better example of that than the open-plan living area. Bright and roomy, there's more than enough space here to spread out and get comfortable, whether you're tucking into a feast around the table or snuggling up in front of the fire. Cooking is anything but a chore in the glossy kitchen, and on rainy days, head up to the mezzanine for board games and billiards. There's also a communal garden for the summer months, where you can sip tea in the sunshine or cocktails at twilight.

And the location is excellent, too. Alnwick is as charming as they come, sprinkled with history and magic – no wonder they filmed Harry Potter here. Spend afternoons wandering down the cobbled lanes, popping in and out of the independent shops, cafes and bookstores that line the high street. The famous Alnwick Castle is just a short walk away, while the Northumberland coast is a thirteen-minute drive. In the evenings, forgo the home-cooking for a pint, delicious pub grub and live music at one of the cosy inns in town.

As you stroll down your paved entrance, you’ll notice your manicured lawn, flowerbed, and dining patio. On a sunny day, it’s the ideal spot for a picnic. Or on a chilly evening, it’s even better for stargazing with a hot toddy in hand. Inside, the living space is a welcoming mix of old and new. The stylish, light-grey kitchen is understated and modern. But we love the traditional countryside features such as flagstone flooring and a sandstone, inglenook fireplace with a wood-burning stove. You feel like you've gone back in time when you’re stoking the flames with the cast-iron tools, and adding fresh logs from the wicker basket. And there’s plenty of history to discover outside the home too – take a thirty-five-minute walk to the 2000-year-old Chesters Roman Fort and Museum on Hadrian’s Wall.

Sandstone Hearth

This charming Tudor castle, built in 1560, has been fully restored to create the perfect romantic retreat for two. Set in the picturesque Teesdale landscape, this historic property is located near the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Park, as well as the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Guests can admire the ornate roof beams carved from oak trees felled over 400 years ago in the dining hall, and relax in the cosy living room with a wood-burning stove set within a Tudor fireplace. The bedroom features a double bed on an oak floor adorned with Persian rugs and offers stunning views of the walled garden and the high moors beyond. The property also boasts an enclosed courtyard garden and two designated parking spaces. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome for a small additional charge.

A truly stunning rural retreat, this home is sat on a hill overlooking the beautiful South Tyne Valley – just five minutes from Hadrian's Wall. Away from it all, yet within walking distance of the village pub, this place really has to be one of our favourites in this neck of the woods. A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we love the master bedroom's view and its lovely freestanding bath. Here you'll be in prime walking country, with hikes from your doorstep. And it's just a ten-minute drive to the market town of Hexham.

Wonder Wall

With jaw-dropping views over Lake Ullswater and a private shoreline and jetty, it's clear what caught our eye about this 1900s gatehouse. There's an alfresco terrace to soak in the lakeside views with barbecues. But should the weather turn, the vistas are just as impressive curled up beside the wood-burning stoves indoors, and the games room will keep little ones busy. Set in the sleepy hamlet of Watermillock, besides two traditional pubs and a watersports centre, little else is within walking distance. However, the village of Pooley Bridge, with a cluster of shops and restaurants, is just a 3-mile drive.

Surrounded by a rich herbaceous garden, this rural farmhouse located in South Cumbria, close to the Lake District National Park, is picturesque. In the summer months the wisteria is in full bloom, so breathe in the scent of the flowers and enjoy the peace and quiet of nature as you relax in your private courtyard with a G&T in hand – don’t forget a sprig of rosemary from the herb garden. Part of the original farmhouse, the historic features and beams have been restored to create a charming setting. Slide your slippers off and tuck your feet under a blanket for a relaxing evening with a good book. 

When you’re ready to retire for the evening, take your pick of the traditional roll-top bath, deep modernised tub or walk-in shower to rinse away the day. Each bedroom, decorated with a striking individual design, will see you drift off to a peaceful night’s sleep. 

The tranquillity of this spot continues into the local area where you’ll find outdoor activities, breathtaking views and quaint market towns in abundance, ensuring this will be a stay to remember.

Right on the outskirts of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and on the banks of the River Swale, this beautiful home certainly ticks the box for a picturesque setting. From near the house, you’re able to follow walking trails along the river, allowing you to unwind and rejuvenate in the fresh country air. But the home itself also offers plenty of opportunity for peace and quiet. 

Between striking colour choices, plush furniture, captivating art, and an outdoor area that offers sunshine and privacy in equal measure, you can find the space to sit quietly with a cup of coffee, throw your phone aside and enjoy a board game or puzzle, dine together at the beautifully made dining table, and lie in late. Treat yourself to a bubble bath and glass of wine, read in the kitchen nook, get competitive in the games room, and sit out after dark to admire the brightening night sky.   

Supply runs can be made in the little market town, where cobbled streets will lead you past cafes and artisans, with Richmond Castle always looming in the background. Pick up specialty cheeses, crackers and wine to take back for an alfresco cheese board, but not before visiting Richmond Castle and stopping off at the Georgian Sundials on the way back. 

As a Grade II listed building, there is undoubtedly plenty of history between the walls of this restored home, but staying here also gives you the opportunity to make your own.


Olde Stone

This annexe home is the ideal bolthole for couples or solo travellers looking to surround themselves with stunning nature. With beautiful views over the working farmland and rolling hills from the upstairs balcony and a garden complete with a stream and plenty of shaded reading nooks, you’ll have everything you need to disconnect and unwind. Inside, a fireplace is a nice touch too – ideal for cooler evenings with a glass of wine. When you’re ready to explore, there’s plenty of hiking and cycling routes nearby, and Alston is easily reachable by car where you’ll find ample shops, fascinating history and fabulous views of the North Pennines.


The Blue Stone

Drystone walls snake across emerald-green fields and heather-clad hills dot the landscape of the Lake District. This old stone cottage is in the middle of it all, with walking trails across hills and fells leading right from the doorstep into the great outdoors. If you fancy heading for civilisation instead, Grasmere is a twenty-minute walk away with its selection of bars, restaurants and traditional country inns. After a day in your hiking boots, there’s nothing better than returning to the crackle of the wood-burning stove in this quaint little cottage, while admiring the timber-beamed ceiling above you. The kitchen is fully equipped to whip up any meal of the day, and there’s a bench outside for a sunny morning coffee. The real highlight here is the view. Stepping outside you’re surrounded by fields and fells, with nothing but the sound of sheep bleating in the distance and birds in the trees. Should the weather turn, you can enjoy this vista from the comfort of the living room, where a window seat makes for the ideal reading spot and underfloor heating keeps toes toasty warm.

Visit Richmond Castle – reachable on foot within seven minutes, or watch a play at the Georgian Theatre Royal – a five-minute walk away. 

Stunning country walks are also on offer, with the Swale Waterfalls and river walk just ten minutes from your door on foot, or head further afield to the picturesque scenery of the Yorkshire Dales – a twenty-two-minute drive away.

This rustic retreat is nestled between the Pennines and the Lake District where it offers idyllic views and a wonderful sense of peace. Consisting of a traditional farmhouse and adjoining cottage, guests can enjoy cosy rooms, wood-burning fires and a snooker table along with a range of extra services – including hot tub hire and catering (available on request). It’s also child-friendly with plenty to explore in the surroundings. From here, it’s just a short walk to Melmerby (with a great local pub), while Ullswater Lake is within easy driving distance. 

The Golden Hills

When a home is surrounded by beautiful scenery, the interior really has to up its game in order to stand a chance of being noticed and thankfully that's the case with this address. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample amounts of natural daylight, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floors. Added to that, we liked the kitchen finished in a fetching shade of purple, the cosy wood-burning stove in the living room and the smart-looking bathrooms. Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.

Nestled in Northumberland's medieval market town of Alnwick, surrounded by country fields, traditional pubs and independent shops, this classic cottage is the perfect cosy retreat for two or a small family. But if you'd like to pick up the pace, Newscastle is reachable in thirty minutes by car –  an excellent option for day trips.
