Immediately, you'll melt into the rustic comforts of the cottage’s cosy living room, complete with a roasting fireplace, flagstone floors, wooden beams, and a gorgeous cupboard that was a wedding present gifted to this home's residents back in 1703. With the nearest fells just metres away, don’t forget those walking boots, which you can store in the old dairy. If you're up for a challenge, you can climb England's highest peak — Scafell Pike — in three and a quarter hours. This converted barn is a hiker’s dream because, while it's nothing flashy, it's within waking distance of England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike. But not just that. You can also hike over to Wast Water, the most dramatic and deepest of the area's lakes, and to a number of stunning waterfalls. 

The home is the perfect place to relax after a full day of walking and exploring, with a cosy vibe, ancient wooden beams, and simple furnishings. There's even an original spy hole to be discovered upstairs. 

Kickstart your evening with a long bath before relaxing in the garden with a well-deserved beer or two. When the summer sun shines on the verdant garden, it's an idyllic place to watch the world peacefully go by. We loved the romance of sunset whilst the sky gradually turned to a gorgeous red.

The sleepy retreat is set in the village of Boot, a quaint collection of cobbled streets and sweet shops. There are a couple of nice pubs to try out too, and supplies can be picked up in Eskdale, a five-minute drive away.

This Lake District’s bolthole is all about the romance. The Romantic poets (including Wordsworth and Coleridge) did wax lyrical about this part of the UK, after all. And we think this 500-year-old stone cottage sitting in the shadow of Scafell Pike is an ideal retreat. It is delightfully cosy, with wooden beams and exposed stonework adding character and warmth. Outside, a riverside paddock is enclosed by those old stone walls the Lake District is famous for, and you can brunch at the picnic table overlooked by the fells. The large roll-top bath is perfect to soak your aching muscles, and the rustic charm of the bedroom especially welcoming after a day of mountain climbing. There are two pubs within walking distance and nothing but untamed country walks just beyond that.

Even though the home itself is 500 years old, it’s full of modern luxuries such as a brand-new country style kitchen and beautiful marble bathroom. Personally, we prefer to just switch off from it all in the secret walled garden with sublime views over the fells. There’s a real romance to this stone cottage. A former byre, it’s stood on this land for 500 years and you can feel the history the moment you walk through the door. The owners have kept the layout much as it was when it was built, with the galleried bedroom created out of the former storage area that overlooked the byre. With thick walls of pink granite and lofty ceilings, it makes a dreamy bolthole for two or a young family. The location is hiking heaven, with the wonders of the Lake District on your doorstep. Days can be spent roaming some of the UK’s most dazzling scenery – much of which can be accessed on foot from the cottage. In the evenings, we can picture you sitting in the grassy paddock with a glass of something bubbly, looking out over the fells as the stars come out to play. 

Hardknott Cottage

Tucked away in the Eskdale valley, this cosy cottage has the best of the Lake District at its feet. Inside, the wooden beams, brick walls and homespun furnishings have a lasting effect. It’s a warming and tranquil place, with sofas for curling up on when it’s pouring rain and a baby grand piano for sing-songs after a glass or two of wine. You’ll find plenty of modern touches, too – the brand new kitchen makes cooking a doddle and the recently installed bathtub is a treat for ramblers’ aching muscles. Outside, a sprawling lawn complete with dining set is ideal for barbecues in the sunshine. And once you’ve filled up on Cumbrian sausages and sticky Grasmere gingerbread, follow the higgledy-piggledy dry stone walls through wild countryside to the enchanting Stanley Ghyll Waterfall or jump in the car and take the scenic twenty-five-minute drive to Wast Water, England’s deepest lake. Before you make your way home to collapse into ridiculously comfortable beds, stop off at The Boot Inn for a well-deserved drink – it’s only a minute from your doorstep.

At Ullswater Lake, the second biggest in the Lake District, you’ll find a diverse range of landscapes and activities as you hike around its enormous perimeter. From the quaint village of Pooley Bridge, with traditional pubs and cute restaurants, take a fourteen-minute stroll to reach an altogether different scene – an isolated, romantic boathouse. As you arrive, its stone walls and wooden balcony look gloriously rustic. You could even plan to arrive by boat and pull up to the private jetty. From every angle, the surroundings of this home are striking – leafy trees, the glistening lake, and rolling mountains across the water make this setting feel quite special. Inside, the traditional theme continues with chunky beams and vintage furniture. We love the glossy, lacquered wooden pieces in the lounge, as well as the understated chandelier bringing a romantic glow in the evening. Take a look around while you wait for the wood-burning stove to heat up – the bedroom is quite magnificent. Situated at the southern end of Coniston Water, the fifth largest of the lakes, this barn conversion blends contemporary comfort with period details. The farm is believed to date back to the 17th century, and the surrounding landscape hasn't changed much in all that time. Lace up your hiking boots and follow any number of footpaths that pass right by the front door. Lake Bank pier is just ten minutes on foot and is perfect for summer swims, canoe launches and paddle boarding.  Alternatively, head north to Coniston Boating Centre for boat hire and trips on the beautifully restored Victorian steam-powered Gondola.

With jaw-dropping views over Lake Ullswater and a private shoreline and jetty, it's clear what caught our eye about this 1900s gatehouse. There's an alfresco terrace to soak in the lakeside views with barbecues. But should the weather turn, the vistas are just as impressive curled up beside the wood-burning stoves indoors, and the games room will keep little ones busy. Set in the sleepy hamlet of Watermillock, besides two traditional pubs and a watersports centre, little else is within walking distance. If salty skin and fresh sea air sound appealing, then this home – positioned quite literally a stone's throw away from Laxey beach (a two-minute walk) will have you jumping with joy from the moment you arrive. Though its serene location is a focal selling point, well thought out stylish interiors invite you to spend time inside the home as well as on the beach. 

Inside, a minimal and chic aesthetic is accentuated by tasteful decor and soft furnishings in every room of the house, providing high-level comfort throughout. With both an inside living area and an outside terrace, you can relax with plenty of space and a good book in hand. Why not get the whole group together to play with one of the provided board games? 

From the bedrooms, you'll be able to look out at the kayakers and paddle-boarders making a splash in the sea. In winter, the sound of the waves crashing into the shore should be enough to send you into a deep sleep. And when you return from the day's adventures, stroll down to one of the country pubs for dinner and a restorative pint of ale, or simply flop down in that spacious living room.

When a home is surrounded by beautiful scenery, the interior really has to up its game in order to stand a chance of being noticed and thankfully that's the case with this address. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample amounts of natural daylight, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floors. Added to that, we liked the kitchen finished in a fetching shade of purple, the cosy wood-burning stove in the living room and the smart-looking bathrooms. Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.

Plus, the bustling market town of Ulverston, which holds a twice-weekly market, is a ten-minute drive away.

If it's ever too cold to use this space, you can head back inside and sit by the bay window, from which you get a similarly swoon-worthy panorama. Once you can tear your eyes away, you'll probably notice that the interior looks pretty modern — that's because it underwent a complete refurbishment in late 2021. The large kitchen and its collection of top-of-the-range appliances are particularly impressive, as are the pristine bathrooms.

When you're in the mood to see what the Lake District has to offer, you're in an excellent position to do so. Stock Ghyll Force waterfall is half an hour's walk away, while Rydal Cave can be reached in under ten minutes' drive. The nearby town of Ambleside has a cinema, cafes and even a Roman fort to explore, too.

Inside, a fireplace is a nice touch too – ideal for cooler evenings with a glass of wine. When you’re ready to explore, there’s plenty of hiking and cycling routes nearby, and Alston is easily reachable by car where you’ll find ample shops, fascinating history and fabulous views of the North Pennines.

Step back in time with a stay in this Victorian manor. Set on a private estate, with surrounding countryside views, it’s the picture of a countryside escape. When you can pull yourself away from the scenery, there’s also a cinema and games room. There’s plenty of space to spread out, including a snug, dining area, and living area. The living space is a little dated, but we think it adds to the traditional charm. Being a Victorian home, expect some low ceilings and uneven floors. The garden is on multiple levels, too, but it’s a great spot for the children to run around. Just keep an eye on them around the woodlands – there are a few fallen trees.

This charming home is in the Falls development in old Ambleside, just a five-minute walk from Ambleside yet in a remarkably peaceful setting. The home overlooks the Stockghyll Gorge, so the sound of water cascading down the rocks becomes the soundtrack to your stay – there are two terraces to enjoy this from, one of which has a barbecue. There are many delightful walks that you can set off on straight from the front door, so you won’t need to use your car much after your arrival. We love this home and think you will too.

Throw off your walking paraphernalia in the inviting entrance hall and make your way upstairs to discover a contemporary retreat awaiting. Exposed slate stone and lofty gables bring all the charm, while pops of colour and rich textiles add a dash of modernity. Come together in the cosy sitting room and break out the home's games. Or take pre-dinner drinks onto the sunny outdoor terrace – the views over the higgledy-piggledy rooftops are charming.

Friends or family coming together will love the extra privacy the two ensuite bathrooms bring, with power showers ready to kick start your day.

And once you're suitably watered and fed, head for the hills for bracing walks around the spell bounding lakes – there are trails starting just an eight-minute hop, skip, and a jump away.

With an elevated position, this apartment has wonderful views over the golf course and Morecambe Bay. The home is housed in a historic building dating from 1897, so as you'd expect, this home has character features such as double-height vaulted ceilings. We love the mezzanine games room with its pool table, and there's plenty of room to entertain your family and friends. There's a claw-footed bath in the main bedroom's en-suite, too, perfect for a soak after a stroll around the estate's 4 acres of grounds. There's also a shared barbecue area with tables and chairs – ideal for warm summer evenings. Other attractions nearby include the Brown Robin Nature Reserve and the town of Grange-over-Sands.

Nestled amongst the east wing of a sprawling estate, this maisonette has plenty of room for families. Cosy and inviting with wooden beams and angled ceilings, this home is sure to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling when you arrive. Snuggle up on the Chesterfield sofas in front of the electric fire while your favourite movie plays on the DVD player. Rustle up delicious meals in the stylish kitchen, then gather around the dining table for family feasts, sharing stories and bottles of bubbly straight out of the wine fridge. All the bedrooms are roomy and traditionally styled, and with private en-suites, nobody will have to queue for the loo. But our favourite spot is the garden. After an alfresco lunch in the courtyard, wander the several acres of grounds and woodlands. The views are absolutely stunning – they stretch towards River Eden and to the Castle Carrock Fells, promising you a slice of that peaceful rural life. Keen cyclists can roam the country lanes by bike or just stroll along the river – viaduct towers, hidden caves and waterfalls are just a few things you'll discover. When your stomach starts rumbling, walk ten minutes into town for local ales and mouth-watering fare at the village pub. Both Carlisle and the Lake District are easily reached by car if you fancy a day out, though we're quite happy to while away our afternoons in Wetheral, exploring the countryside.
