This converted barn is a hiker’s dream because, while it's nothing flashy, it's within waking distance of England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike. But not just that. You can also hike over to Wast Water, the most dramatic and deepest of the area's lakes, and to a number of stunning waterfalls. 

The home is the perfect place to relax after a full day of walking and exploring, with a cosy vibe, ancient wooden beams, and simple furnishings. There's even an original spy hole to be discovered upstairs. 

Kickstart your evening with a long bath before relaxing in the garden with a well-deserved beer or two. When the summer sun shines on the verdant garden, it's an idyllic place to watch the world peacefully go by. We loved the romance of sunset whilst the sky gradually turned to a gorgeous red.

The sleepy retreat is set in the village of Boot, a quaint collection of cobbled streets and sweet shops. There are a couple of nice pubs to try out too, and supplies can be picked up in Eskdale, a five-minute drive away.

There’s a real romance to this stone cottage. A former byre, it’s stood on this land for 500 years and you can feel the history the moment you walk through the door. The owners have kept the layout much as it was when it was built, with the galleried bedroom created out of the former storage area that overlooked the byre. With thick walls of pink granite and lofty ceilings, it makes a dreamy bolthole for two or a young family. The location is hiking heaven, with the wonders of the Lake District on your doorstep. Days can be spent roaming some of the UK’s most dazzling scenery – much of which can be accessed on foot from the cottage. In the evenings, we can picture you sitting in the grassy paddock with a glass of something bubbly, looking out over the fells as the stars come out to play.

This Lake District’s bolthole is all about the romance. The Romantic poets (including Wordsworth and Coleridge) did wax lyrical about this part of the UK, after all. And we think this 500-year-old stone cottage sitting in the shadow of Scafell Pike is an ideal retreat. It is delightfully cosy, with wooden beams and exposed stonework adding character and warmth. Outside, a riverside paddock is enclosed by those old stone walls the Lake District is famous for, and you can brunch at the picnic table overlooked by the fells. The large roll-top bath is perfect to soak your aching muscles, and the rustic charm of the bedroom especially welcoming after a day of mountain climbing. There are two pubs within walking distance and nothing but untamed country walks just beyond that.

With the nearest fells just metres away, don’t forget those walking boots, which you can store in the old dairy. If you're up for a challenge, you can climb England's highest peak — Scafell Pike — in three and a quarter hours. A firm family favourite, this Lakeland legend certainly makes an unforgettable first impression.

It’s a warming and tranquil place, with sofas for curling up on when it’s pouring rain and a baby grand piano for sing-songs after a glass or two of wine. You’ll find plenty of modern touches, too – the brand new kitchen makes cooking a doddle and the recently installed bathtub is a treat for ramblers’ aching muscles. Outside, a sprawling lawn complete with dining set is ideal for barbecues in the sunshine. And once you’ve filled up on Cumbrian sausages and sticky Grasmere gingerbread, follow the higgledy-piggledy dry stone walls through wild countryside to the enchanting Stanley Ghyll Waterfall or jump in the car and take the scenic twenty-five-minute drive to Wast Water, England’s deepest lake. Before you make your way home to collapse into ridiculously comfortable beds, stop off at The Boot Inn for a well-deserved drink – it’s only a minute from your doorstep.

Nestled amongst the east wing of a sprawling estate, this maisonette has plenty of room for families. Cosy and inviting with wooden beams and angled ceilings, this home is sure to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling when you arrive. Snuggle up on the Chesterfield sofas in front of the electric fire while your favourite movie plays on the DVD player. Rustle up delicious meals in the stylish kitchen, then gather around the dining table for family feasts, sharing stories and bottles of bubbly straight out of the wine fridge. All the bedrooms are roomy and traditionally styled, and with private en-suites, nobody will have to queue for the loo. But our favourite spot is the garden. After an alfresco lunch in the courtyard, wander the several acres of grounds and woodlands. The views are absolutely stunning – they stretch towards River Eden and to the Castle Carrock Fells, promising you a slice of that peaceful rural life. Keen cyclists can roam the country lanes by bike or just stroll along the river – viaduct towers, hidden caves and waterfalls are just a few things you'll discover. When your stomach starts rumbling, walk ten minutes into town for local ales and mouth-watering fare at the village pub. Both Carlisle and the Lake District are easily reached by car if you fancy a day out, though we're quite happy to while away our afternoons in Wetheral, exploring the countryside.

Though set deep in the Cumbria countryside, there's nothing twee about the inside of this home. Accents of racing green and antiqued brass bring flow and a dash of luxury throughout the space and guide you upstairs to an exquisite bedroom with a gleaming slipper bath at its heart. Part of an exclusive estate set within 1.5 acres of grounds, you could feel a million miles from anywhere here. But you're not as remote as you may think. The footpath from your door leads to the charming village of Talkin. Grab a shift pint and hearty meal in the village inn, or mosey down to The Boathouse Cafe for lunch al fresco overlooking the tarn. When it's time to embrace the great outdoors, hire a rowing boat, paddleboard, or kayak to launch off the tarn. Tee off from the local golf course - it overlooks the cottages. Then take a stroll around the 1.3-mile tarn through the mature woodland. Or, you could stay tucked up at home and soak up those views from the private patio or beside the fire – it's a scene you'll never tire of.

One glaring error will hit you the moment you step inside this beautiful cottage – that you haven't booked for long enough. The interior strikes just the right balance between countryside style and more urban chic. So while you'll find a Shaker-style kitchen, a warming wood burner and the welcoming cottage feel, there are plenty of pop art prints, eye-catching tiles and mid-century-style furniture that lends it a more contemporary flair. Upstairs, the three bedrooms are individually decorated, but all are exceptional and luxurious, with pristine white towels and bathrobes provided. That said, only the master comes with an in-room freestanding tub, which certainly elevates it in our eyes. Set in glorious countryside, sandwiched between the North Pennines AONB and Lake District National Park, this home offers fantastic views from its enclosed garden. Topped off with a steaming hot tub, which has plenty of space for six people, it's a truly fabulous place to relax. There are plenty of walks along the trails and footpaths that crisscross the Cumbrian countryside. Circular routes offer a varying degree of challenge depending on preference. Still, the leisurely twenty-five-minute stroll to the Shepherds Inn in Langwathby is our favourite kind of country walk – one with a pub at the end. Despite the feeling of seclusion, you're only four miles from Penrith, so it's easy enough to stock up on essentials when needed.

At Ullswater Lake, the second biggest in the Lake District, you’ll find a diverse range of landscapes and activities as you hike around its enormous perimeter. From the quaint village of Pooley Bridge, with traditional pubs and cute restaurants, take a fourteen-minute stroll to reach an altogether different scene – an isolated, romantic boathouse. Or you can even have your own private hideaway in the second sitting room, with yet another fireplace – this time a sleek, modern hearth set into the wall. After a day in your hiking boots, there’s nothing better than returning to the crackle of the wood-burning stove in this quaint little cottage, while admiring the timber-beamed ceiling above you. The kitchen is fully equipped to whip up any meal of the day, and there’s a bench outside for a sunny morning coffee. The real highlight here is the view. Stepping outside you’re surrounded by fields and fells, with nothing but the sound of sheep bleating in the distance and birds in the trees. Should the weather turn, you can enjoy this vista from the comfort of the living room, where a window seat makes for the ideal reading spot and underfloor heating keeps toes toasty warm.

Out in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, this cosy cottage sits right between the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines AONB. It’s safe to say there’s no shortage of walking trails over fields and fells, hills and heather-clad dales. It’s a twenty-minute walk (or four-minute drive) to the village of Langwathby with its train station, village shop and handful of pubs and a coffee shop. Further afield, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Penrith, a ten-minute drive away. A classic rose-stone exterior greets you on arrival, but it’s the inside of this home that really impresses. Walls of reclaimed wood, exposed stonework and a vaulted ceiling in the living room are simply stunning. There’s a wood-burner to keep things cosy and each piece of furniture – headboards made from old pallets, a striking faux-bird lampshade and old bronze keys in the doors – feels handpicked. If the glorious free-standing slipper tub in the master bedroom doesn’t invite you for a dip, perhaps the wood-clad hot tub outside can sooth sore feet after a day in the hills. There’s nothing but the bubbles, the lawn, fields and the lake in the distance out here.

This classic yet contemporary home is just a few minutes' walk from the centre of Ambleside and perfectly placed to capture a picturesque glimpse of the steeple of St Mary's Church rising above the trees. So sip your morning coffee on the balcony and take a minute to enjoy the charming view. Once you arrive and park the car, we love that there's little reason to move it again as you can find everything you need on your doorstep. However, if you do decide to explore further afield, the home is only a ten-minute drive from the head of Windermere, meaning that exploring the Lake District is as easy as hopping in the car with a picnic. And when you return from the day's adventures, stroll down to one of the country pubs for dinner and a restorative pint of ale, or simply flop down in that spacious living room.

When a home is surrounded by beautiful scenery, the interior really has to up its game in order to stand a chance of being noticed and thankfully that's the case with this address. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample amounts of natural daylight, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floors. Added to that, we liked the kitchen finished in a fetching shade of purple, the cosy wood-burning stove in the living room and the smart-looking bathrooms. Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.

If salty skin and fresh sea air sound appealing, then this home – positioned quite literally a stone's throw away from Laxey beach (a two-minute walk) will have you jumping with joy from the moment you arrive. Though its serene location is a focal selling point, well thought out stylish interiors invite you to spend time inside the home as well as on the beach. 

Inside, a minimal and chic aesthetic is accentuated by tasteful decor and soft furnishings in every room of the house, providing high-level comfort throughout. With both an inside living area and an outside terrace, you can relax with plenty of space and a good book in hand. Although less than six miles from Millom Beach, this country cottage still allows you to get easy access to destinations like Lakeside Landing on Windermere, twenty miles away. That said, with the striking views from your very own front door, you might not need to travel far for scenery.

The stone walls of this converted 17th-century farmhouse welcome you to rustic English life. With its quaint enclosed garden, you might fancy cucumber sandwiches on the lush lawn, or a picnic on the bench by the dripping ivy on the walls. And of course fell views and gorgeous pastoral panoramas.

Inside, plenty of original features have not only been kept, but lovingly resorted. Step inside to the cooling sensation of Lakeland slate flagstone floors, plus exposed oak beams, and a perfectly preserved inglenook with an iron log-burner. With fresh cream paint on the walls, and Scandi-style modern sofas, elements of 21st-century design bring a new lease of life to the home. And it’s a similar story upstairs, where the superbly stylish bathrooms boast a tub and rainfall shower – an even more relaxing approach to country living.

Once the dwelling of the estate's groundskeeper, this Lake District property has been refurbished to become a contemporary countryside getaway.

Inside, the design could definitely be described as minimalist, with walls painted in soothing whites adorned only by a few well-chosen pieces of artwork, a sleek kitchen and a preference for simple wooden furnishings. The wood-burning fireplace situated in an archway between the living room and dining area is sure to keep the whole ground floor warm and toasty.

But what about during those balmy months in which a roaring fire isn't necessary? The alfresco dining table on the terrace is sure to see some use during this time, as is the barbecue. You'll probably want to work up an appetite first, however, and there's an onsite heated swimming pool and an activity centre offering everything from watersports, 4x4 off-road driving, clay pigeon shooting, archery, axe-throwing or bushcraft.

If you're after something a little more sedate, there are plenty of walking routes that start from the site, including one to the cute village of Hawkshead about ninety minutes away on foot.

Sitting on an elevated position looking across Great Langdale Valley and Lingmoor Fell, this house boasts incredible panoramas. Standing on the front patio, you might need to take a moment to breathe in the fresh air and gaze out to the majestic valley. With jaw-dropping views over Lake Ullswater and a private shoreline and jetty, it's clear what caught our eye about this 1900s gatehouse. There's an alfresco terrace to soak in the lakeside views with barbecues. But should the weather turn, the vistas are just as impressive curled up beside the wood-burning stoves indoors, and the games room will keep little ones busy. Set in the sleepy hamlet of Watermillock, besides two traditional pubs and a watersports centre, little else is within walking distance. However, the village of Pooley Bridge, with a cluster of shops and restaurants, is just a 3-mile drive.

Floor-to-ceiling windows in the open-plan living area and bedrooms invite the trees and fields inside and at the end of the day, an egg-shaped soaking tub is ready to soothe tired muscles in the master ensuite. Situated at the southern end of Coniston Water, the fifth largest of the lakes, this barn conversion blends contemporary comfort with period details. The farm is believed to date back to the 17th century, and the surrounding landscape hasn't changed much in all that time. Lace up your hiking boots and follow any number of footpaths that pass right by the front door. Lake Bank pier is just ten minutes on foot and is perfect for summer swims, canoe launches and paddle boarding.  Alternatively, head north to Coniston Boating Centre for boat hire and trips on the beautifully restored Victorian steam-powered Gondola.
