One mile away from the town centre of lakeside Keswick, this delightful cottage is the ideal place to dry off after a day of adventure. And at only a five-minute walk from the Derwent Water Marina, you won’t have any trouble getting to and from the shores. 

From the outside, the cottage offers a little sense of modernity as well as history. With rustic stone walls halfway up, then a fresh white paint job for the first floor, the exterior is a splendid display of old and new. You’ve even got a classic red postbox built in the wall – very handy for all the postcards you’ll be sending. 

Inside, the living space feels fresh and understated. With cosy sofas and an upholstered footrest, you’ll love putting up your sore feet after a long day of hiking. Pour yourself a tumbler of whisky and get the fire going before heading upstairs for a soak in the bath. Is there any better way to end a day of walking the English countryside? Welll on a sunny day, it might be possible – head out to sit among the flowers and foliage on your private patio, with an ice-cold G&T in hand.

On the edge of the little village of Braithwaite, this cottage has the best of both worlds – you’re within walking distance of the village shop, yet there are uninterrupted views of the countryside from the upstairs windows. The garden is a delightful retreat, blooming with lavender, geraniums and pansies in the summer and home to all kinds of local birdlife that visit the feeders. Plus, you may spot the occasional duck wandering up from the little beck (stream) that runs by. Out here, you’ve got tables and chairs set up on the patio so you can take in the towering hills of the Lake District around you.

Should the weather turn, you can still enjoy a spot of birdwatching from the sunroom (there’s a pair of binoculars). Come sundown, retire to the cosy living room, where a wood-burning stove keeps the evening chill at bay. Sunny breakfasts can be enjoyed at the dining table by the double glass doors, leading out to the garden and the full kitchen basks in natural light, thanks to a picture-frame window. 

Should you wish to explore beyond Braithwaite and its hiking trails, you can make the seven-minute drive to Keswick for watersports on Derwentwater and a selection of tearooms, cafés and restaurants.

Drystone walls snake across emerald-green fields and heather-clad hills dot the landscape of the Lake District. This old stone cottage is in the middle of it all, with walking trails across hills and fells leading right from the doorstep into the great outdoors. If you fancy heading for civilisation instead, Grasmere is a twenty-minute walk away with its selection of bars, restaurants and traditional country inns. After a day in your hiking boots, there’s nothing better than returning to the crackle of the wood-burning stove in this quaint little cottage, while admiring the timber-beamed ceiling above you. The kitchen is fully equipped to whip up any meal of the day, and there’s a bench outside for a sunny morning coffee. The real highlight here is the view. Stepping outside you’re surrounded by fields and fells, with nothing but the sound of sheep bleating in the distance and birds in the trees. Should the weather turn, you can enjoy this vista from the comfort of the living room, where a window seat makes for the ideal reading spot and underfloor heating keeps toes toasty warm.

With jaw-dropping views over Lake Ullswater and a private shoreline and jetty, it's clear what caught our eye about this 1900s gatehouse. There's an alfresco terrace to soak in the lakeside views with barbecues. But should the weather turn, the vistas are just as impressive curled up beside the wood-burning stoves indoors, and the games room will keep little ones busy. Set in the sleepy hamlet of Watermillock, besides two traditional pubs and a watersports centre, little else is within walking distance. However, the village of Pooley Bridge, with a cluster of shops and restaurants, is just a 3-mile drive.

At Ullswater Lake, the second biggest in the Lake District, you’ll find a diverse range of landscapes and activities as you hike around its enormous perimeter. From the quaint village of Pooley Bridge, with traditional pubs and cute restaurants, take a fourteen-minute stroll to reach an altogether different scene – an isolated, romantic boathouse. As you arrive, its stone walls and wooden balcony look gloriously rustic. You could even plan to arrive by boat and pull up to the private jetty. From every angle, the surroundings of this home are striking – leafy trees, the glistening lake, and rolling mountains across the water make this setting feel quite special. Inside, the traditional theme continues with chunky beams and vintage furniture. We love the glossy, lacquered wooden pieces in the lounge, as well as the understated chandelier bringing a romantic glow in the evening. Take a look around while you wait for the wood-burning stove to heat up – the bedroom is quite magnificent. A luxurious cushioned headboard, freestanding copper bathtub, and private balcony set over the water are just a few of the fabulous features. When a home is surrounded by beautiful scenery, the interior really has to up its game in order to stand a chance of being noticed and thankfully that's the case with this address. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample amounts of natural daylight, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floors. Added to that, we liked the kitchen finished in a fetching shade of purple, the cosy wood-burning stove in the living room and the smart-looking bathrooms. Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.

Right on the edge of the Lake District National Park lies Cockermouth, a quaint market town brimming with art galleries, traditional pubs and speciality shops. It's a historic area with plenty to write home about, as William Wordsworth can attest – he was born here, and many of the area's beautiful landscapes inspired his poetry. This snug heritage home is just a five-minute drive from the town centre, making it the perfect spot to switch off and unwind in the Cumbrian countryside. Inside, there's oodles of charm and character – a brick fireplace with a crackling wood-burner in the living room, reclaimed tiles in the kitchen and antique furniture everywhere you look. Two lounges ensure you'll have tons of space to snuggle up and get cosy, whether you want to play a board game, listen to a record or curl up with a good book. Some of the Lake District’s most striking scenery can be found at Ullswater, with its mountainous landscape and unusual z-shaped, ‘ribbon lake’, which is the second largest in the region. But even better than simply visiting this beautiful spot, you can see it all from the windows of this lakeside home. Although it’s just a five-minute drive from the quaint town of Pooley Bridge, this home feels truly rural and isolated. Park up the 4x4 in the gravel drive and head into this warm and welcoming abode. Light up the wood-burning stove in the plush lounge, with its horseshoe sofa that can fit the entire family. Or you can even have your own private hideaway in the second sitting room, with yet another fireplace – this time a sleek, modern hearth set into the wall. For balmy English evenings, another space can be found outdoors, with your very own patio complete with comfy garden furniture. Alfresco drinking and dining will certainly be on the cards out here. While you can see the water from the comfort of your own home, it’s just a seven-minute walk down to Ullswater Marina.

We dare you to find a traditional Yorkshire Dales cottage more charming than this, folks. Mooch along to the café down the road for hearty breakfasts, or a smidge further, into Clapham (four-minute drive or half-an-hour stroll) with its cheese shop (this is Wensleydale territory), delightful independent gift shops, and a traditional pub for real ale and a warm welcome.  

When it’s time to dive into the great outdoors, you’re right beneath Ingleborough, one of the famous Three Peaks. Follow the countless bridle paths just moments away, leading to lakeside nature trails, mature woodlands, spectacular limestone caves, and eventually, the summit of Ingleborough.

When it’s time to come back down to earth, this elegant home with a pedigree going way back to 1620 delivers all the cottage feels with flagged stone floors, exposed beams, and quirky little nooks. Friends sharing will love how spaced out the bedrooms feel, each on their own floor. And though there’s no enclosed garden to speak of, the lawned sitting-out area at the front of the home is perfect for evening summer drinks as you watch the lambs and ducks waddle by across the green. This charming home is in the Falls development in old Ambleside, just a five-minute walk from Ambleside yet in a remarkably peaceful setting. The home overlooks the Stockghyll Gorge, so the sound of water cascading down the rocks becomes the soundtrack to your stay – there are two terraces to enjoy this from, one of which has a barbecue. There are many delightful walks that you can set off on straight from the front door, so you won’t need to use your car much after your arrival. We love this home and think you will too.

Check in to this waterfront cottage in the Lake District, where heritage, design, and uninterrupted views of Talkin Tarn and the Carrock Fells blend seamlessly. Though set deep in the Cumbria countryside, there's nothing twee about the inside of this home. Accents of racing green and antiqued brass bring flow and a dash of luxury throughout the space and guide you upstairs to an exquisite bedroom with a gleaming slipper bath at its heart. Part of an exclusive estate set within 1.5 acres of grounds, you could feel a million miles from anywhere here. But you're not as remote as you may think. The footpath from your door leads to the charming village of Talkin. Grab a shift pint and hearty meal in the village inn, or mosey down to The Boathouse Cafe for lunch al fresco overlooking the tarn. When it's time to embrace the great outdoors, hire a rowing boat, paddleboard, or kayak to launch off the tarn. Tee off from the local golf course - it overlooks the cottages. Then take a stroll around the 1.3-mile tarn through the mature woodland. Or, you could stay tucked up at home and soak up those views from the private patio or beside the fire – it's a scene you'll never tire of.

Nestled amongst the east wing of a sprawling estate, this maisonette has plenty of room for families. Cosy and inviting with wooden beams and angled ceilings, this home is sure to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling when you arrive. Snuggle up on the Chesterfield sofas in front of the electric fire while your favourite movie plays on the DVD player. Rustle up delicious meals in the stylish kitchen, then gather around the dining table for family feasts, sharing stories and bottles of bubbly straight out of the wine fridge. All the bedrooms are roomy and traditionally styled, and with private en-suites, nobody will have to queue for the loo. But our favourite spot is the garden. After an alfresco lunch in the courtyard, wander the several acres of grounds and woodlands. The views are absolutely stunning – they stretch towards River Eden and to the Castle Carrock Fells, promising you a slice of that peaceful rural life. Keen cyclists can roam the country lanes by bike or just stroll along the river – viaduct towers, hidden caves and waterfalls are just a few things you'll discover. When your stomach starts rumbling, walk ten minutes into town for local ales and mouth-watering fare at the village pub. Both Carlisle and the Lake District are easily reached by car if you fancy a day out, though we're quite happy to while away our afternoons in Wetheral, exploring the countryside.

From Fells

A truly stunning rural retreat, this home is sat on a hill overlooking the beautiful South Tyne Valley – just five minutes from Hadrian's Wall. Away from it all, yet within walking distance of the village pub, this place really has to be one of our favourites in this neck of the woods. A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. Part of the original farmhouse, the historic features and beams have been restored to create a charming setting. Warm and inviting, this home is perfect for families and groups of friends. It’s located just outside of Windermere, a mere ten-minute walk from the shops, restaurants, and pubs. There are plenty of parks to explore, in addition to the lake – will you hike around it or enjoy a spot of boating? The home itself is cosy and comfortable, with a log burner for chilly weather and an attractive patio garden for warmer days.

Windermere Waters

In a part of the UK with such stunning scenery, it really pays to have a home with some outdoor space here. Luckily, from this apartment's balcony, you get beautiful views of Lake Windermere and the hills surrounding the waters.

If it's ever too cold to use this space, you can head back inside and sit by the bay window, from which you get a similarly swoon-worthy panorama. Once you can tear your eyes away, you'll probably notice that the interior looks pretty modern — that's because it underwent a complete refurbishment in late 2021. The large kitchen and its collection of top-of-the-range appliances are particularly impressive, as are the pristine bathrooms.

When you're in the mood to see what the Lake District has to offer, you're in an excellent position to do so. Stock Ghyll Force waterfall is half an hour's walk away, while Rydal Cave can be reached in under ten minutes' drive. The nearby town of Ambleside has a cinema, cafes and even a Roman fort to explore, too.

Kendal Mint Cake

Situated at the southern end of Coniston Water, the fifth largest of the lakes, this barn conversion blends contemporary comfort with period details. The farm is believed to date back to the 17th century, and the surrounding landscape hasn't changed much in all that time. Lace up your hiking boots and follow any number of footpaths that pass right by the front door. Lake Bank pier is just ten minutes on foot and is perfect for summer swims, canoe launches and paddle boarding.  Alternatively, head north to Coniston Boating Centre for boat hire and trips on the beautifully restored Victorian steam-powered Gondola.

If country walks are your thing then you can't go wrong with this cute little home in the village of Fourstones. Surrounded by the dramatic rolling hills of the South Tyne Valley, it's a remote rural escape with all the comforts of home. Just a five-minute drive from Hadrian's Wall, you'll be in an elevated position overlooking farmland. Inside, this place is as warm and cosy as you would imagine, with an electric fire in the living room and comfortable, modern furnishings. There's plenty of character in the form of vaulted ceilings and wooden beams, but there's nothing rustic about it. Its swish kitchen is bigger than most and features high-spec appliances. And if you're bringing your dog, you'll have a pretty, enclosed garden and a terrace for sitting outdoors in the summer. Here you'll be just a ten-minute drive from the market town of Hexham with all its shops and restaurants.

A Stitch on Tyne

Out in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, this cosy cottage sits right between the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines AONB. It’s safe to say there’s no shortage of walking trails over fields and fells, hills and heather-clad dales. It’s a twenty-minute walk (or four-minute drive) to the village of Langwathby with its train station, village shop and handful of pubs and a coffee shop. Further afield, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Penrith, a ten-minute drive away. A classic rose-stone exterior greets you on arrival, but it’s the inside of this home that really impresses. Walls of reclaimed wood, exposed stonework and a vaulted ceiling in the living room are simply stunning. There’s a wood-burner to keep things cosy and each piece of furniture – headboards made from old pallets, a striking faux-bird lampshade and old bronze keys in the doors – feels handpicked. If the glorious free-standing slipper tub in the master bedroom doesn’t invite you for a dip, perhaps the wood-clad hot tub outside can sooth sore feet after a day in the hills. There’s nothing but the bubbles, the lawn, fields and the lake in the distance out here.

With a prime location in the heart of Ambleside, this charming home is a superb option for a family or group of friends looking to see more of the Lake District. You can walk to Lake Windermere from here and set off on wonderful walks straight from the front door. When you return home, beautiful views can be admired from the dining room. The home blends traditional elements with contemporary comforts – everything you need is close to hand. You’ll even have a small patio space to unwind in when the weather is warm. 

Ambleside Air

This charming cottage is a perfect base in beautiful Ambleside. It’s a cosy home for four, ideal for a family or two couples. We love the log burner, which you can curl up beside after spending the day exploring the Great Outdoors – you can set off on excellent hikes right from the front door. There’s also a patio garden, a splendid spot for a glass of wine or a morning cuppa. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, and bars nearby, and Lake Windermere is a short stroll away. 

Ambleside Cottage

Ambleside is a picturesque village that marks the head of Windermere – England’s largest natural lake – but you could be forgiven for thinking that this modern pad was located in a cosmopolitan city. The interior is luxurious yet simple, following the motto “less is best”. Each piece of furniture has been carefully selected, from the floating bar stools to the curved standing tub. We love the colour palette, which blends soft blues with sunshine yellow. The kitchen tiles light up the open-plan living space and create the perfect cooking space. You can make the most of the Neff appliances by whipping up an evening feast. This home is located above a chocolate shop so expect to get the occasional whiff of sweetness (and constant cravings!). Luckily the host provides complimentary chocolates for you to pocket as you head into the Lake District for a day of hiking.

Step back in time with a stay in this Victorian manor. Set on a private estate, with surrounding countryside views, it’s the picture of a countryside escape. When you can pull yourself away from the scenery, there’s also a cinema and games room. There’s plenty of space to spread out, including a snug, dining area, and living area. The living space is a little dated, but we think it adds to the traditional charm. Being a Victorian home, expect some low ceilings and uneven floors. The garden is on multiple levels, too, but it’s a great spot for the children to run around. Just keep an eye on them around the woodlands – there are a few fallen trees.
