This detached barn conversion is located in a quiet hamlet and offers panoramic views over the Cumbrian countryside. If we had to be picky, we’d say the bathroom could do with a refresh, though it functions fine. The Cambrian Way passes by the front of the home, making the place ideal for walkers. Plus, the bustling market town of Ulverston, which holds a twice-weekly market, is a ten-minute drive away.

Get everyone involved in a ping pong tournament, shoot goals in the netball hoop, or play a spot of badminton before firing up the two barbecues and enjoying an alfresco lunch on the deck. When it rains, fear not. Retreat to the games room for a round of pool, or curl up with a book in the plush sitting room while the kids play on the PS4. Your hosts pride themselves on their eco credentials – the underfloor heating is through a renewable ground source, and there’s a solar array on the roof providing the electricity.

Grange-over-Sands is a peaceful seaside town with elegant Edwardian architecture. The house is 150 metres from the Main Street, and within easy walking distance of a supermarket, local cafés, and some excellent takeaway restaurants. On sunny days, stroll along the banks of the estuary or walk seven minutes to the Ornamental Gardens for a picnic. The Lakes are easily accessible from the house – the southern end of Lake Windermere is fourteen minutes away by car, where you can practise a variety of watersports. On race days, drive eight minutes to the lively Cartmel Racecourse, and visit one of the top class restaurants in the town afterwards. Or head home and take advantage of the electric pizza oven for a pizza night on the verandah. There’s endless fun to be had here – we just hope you can squeeze it all in!

The home is housed in a historic building dating from 1897, so as you'd expect, this home has character features such as double-height vaulted ceilings. We love the mezzanine games room with its pool table, and there's plenty of room to entertain your family and friends. There's a claw-footed bath in the main bedroom's en-suite, too, perfect for a soak after a stroll around the estate's 4 acres of grounds. There's also a shared barbecue area with tables and chairs – ideal for warm summer evenings. Other attractions nearby include the Brown Robin Nature Reserve and the town of Grange-over-Sands.

Or hop in the car to Lake Windermere (two miles) or Coniston Water (ten miles) – getting out and about is a cinch with two off-road parking spaces. Inside, the design could definitely be described as minimalist, with walls painted in soothing whites adorned only by a few well-chosen pieces of artwork, a sleek kitchen and a preference for simple wooden furnishings. The wood-burning fireplace situated in an archway between the living room and dining area is sure to keep the whole ground floor warm and toasty.

But what about during those balmy months in which a roaring fire isn't necessary? The alfresco dining table on the terrace is sure to see some use during this time, as is the barbecue. You'll probably want to work up an appetite first, however, and there's an onsite heated swimming pool and an activity centre offering everything from watersports, 4x4 off-road driving, clay pigeon shooting, archery, axe-throwing or bushcraft.

If you're after something a little more sedate, there are plenty of walking routes that start from the site, including one to the cute village of Hawkshead about ninety minutes away on foot.

The interior of the garden apartment has been finished in a cleansing shade of white that feels instantly soothing and there's also a fireplace in the living room that's ideal for gathering around during the colder months. Out through the back door, however, is a wonderfully green space where you can sit out underneath the pergola and feel the sun on the skin — we're nothing if optimistic. There are tall trees lining the borders that offer a little bit of privacy as well as flourishing plant beds. If it gives you a bit of inspiration to head out and explore more of the great outdoors, you're in a wonderful position. Coastal walking routes in Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in seven minutes' drive, while Lake Windemere takes thirty-five minutes to reach.

Here, you can kick back here in front of the fireplace, after fun-filled days of hiking, cycling or relaxing by the lake. When the weather is kind, take yourself outside on the balcony for some afternoon tea in the sunshine. 

While the Lake District presents a vast array of shops, pubs and restaurants to try out (the nearest pub is just 500 yards away), you won't find bars and clubs open until the early hours. That's why the entertainment features of this home have been carefully selected to ensure guests are having fun around the clock. Lying within a large estate on the western side of Lake Windermere, this mighty country pile is a superb option for a big party travelling to the Lake District.

Like many properties in the local area, there's a real sense of heritage and time-honoured homeliness in the interior, as seen with the wooden ceiling beams, grand dining room and lavish living area complete with a wood-burning fireplace and walls full of historic artwork.
