This detached barn conversion is located in a quiet hamlet and offers panoramic views over the Cumbrian countryside. Outside, there’s a decked area for lunches in the sunshine and an enclosed garden for four-legged friends. Inside, the living area is kept warm with a wood-burning stove. If we had to be picky, we’d say the bathroom could do with a refresh, though it functions fine. The Cambrian Way passes by the front of the home, making the place ideal for walkers. Plus, the bustling market town of Ulverston, which holds a twice-weekly market, is a ten-minute drive away.

Set on the second and third floors of a modern apartment building, while there’s no garden to speak of, the snug balcony with river views is a lovely touch. An excellent option for families looking to explore the Lake District, take your pick from the countless walking and cycling routes nearby. Or hop in the car to Lake Windermere (two miles) or Coniston Water (ten miles) – getting out and about is a cinch with two off-road parking spaces. But if the weather doesn’t buck up, there are board games, a Playstation and Netflix here to amuse the kids (and the young at heart). 

To the Lake with Love

This charming holiday home is located in the small village of Staveley-in-Cartmel in the Lake District National Park. You can set off on beautiful walks straight from the front door – Windermere is only a five-minute walk away. The characterful cottage has original features and is equipped with everything you might need for a cosy break in the Lakes. The small front garden boasts wonderful views of the surrounding fields and countryside and is a splendid spot for a post-hike drink.

Once the dwelling of the estate's groundskeeper, this Lake District property has been refurbished to become a contemporary countryside getaway.

Inside, the design could definitely be described as minimalist, with walls painted in soothing whites adorned only by a few well-chosen pieces of artwork, a sleek kitchen and a preference for simple wooden furnishings. The wood-burning fireplace situated in an archway between the living room and dining area is sure to keep the whole ground floor warm and toasty.

But what about during those balmy months in which a roaring fire isn't necessary? The alfresco dining table on the terrace is sure to see some use during this time, as is the barbecue. You'll probably want to work up an appetite first, however, and there's an onsite heated swimming pool and an activity centre offering everything from watersports, 4x4 off-road driving, clay pigeon shooting, archery, axe-throwing or bushcraft.

If you're after something a little more sedate, there are plenty of walking routes that start from the site, including one to the cute village of Hawkshead about ninety minutes away on foot.

Get everyone involved in a ping pong tournament, shoot goals in the netball hoop, or play a spot of badminton before firing up the two barbecues and enjoying an alfresco lunch on the deck. When it rains, fear not. Retreat to the games room for a round of pool, or curl up with a book in the plush sitting room while the kids play on the PS4. Your hosts pride themselves on their eco credentials – the underfloor heating is through a renewable ground source, and there’s a solar array on the roof providing the electricity.

Grange-over-Sands is a peaceful seaside town with elegant Edwardian architecture. The house is 150 metres from the Main Street, and within easy walking distance of a supermarket, local cafés, and some excellent takeaway restaurants. On sunny days, stroll along the banks of the estuary or walk seven minutes to the Ornamental Gardens for a picnic. The Lakes are easily accessible from the house – the southern end of Lake Windermere is fourteen minutes away by car, where you can practise a variety of watersports. On race days, drive eight minutes to the lively Cartmel Racecourse, and visit one of the top class restaurants in the town afterwards. Or head home and take advantage of the electric pizza oven for a pizza night on the verandah. There’s endless fun to be had here – we just hope you can squeeze it all in!

The home is housed in a historic building dating from 1897, so as you'd expect, this home has character features such as double-height vaulted ceilings. We love the mezzanine games room with its pool table, and there's plenty of room to entertain your family and friends. This warm and inviting home is in the grounds of the old vicarage estate, having originally been the stables. It’s nestled in the heart of the Lake District, between Lake Windermere and Esthwaite. The home boasts beautiful views down the valley towards Sawrey, Grizedale Forest, and the Old Man of Coniston. It’s just a short walk from Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s home, and is surrounded by a wild meadow planted with fruit and nut tree orchards – this is certainly a picturesque spot for a romantic escape. Lying within a large estate on the western side of Lake Windermere, this mighty country pile is a superb option for a big party travelling to the Lake District.

Like many properties in the local area, there's a real sense of heritage and time-honoured homeliness in the interior, as seen with the wooden ceiling beams, grand dining room and lavish living area complete with a wood-burning fireplace and walls full of historic artwork.

Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample amounts of natural daylight, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floors. Added to that, we liked the kitchen finished in a fetching shade of purple, the cosy wood-burning stove in the living room and the smart-looking bathrooms. Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.

But should the sun make an appearance, pull on your hiking shoes and follow one of the nearby footpaths to the Mellor Millennium Viewpoint for far-reaching views across the landscape.
