This place had us on those sweeping countryside views alone – it’s just green paddocks and rolling valleys for as far as the eye can see. And that was before we’d even noticed that suntrap terrace with hot tub.

Set on a private estate made up of seven holiday cottages and a mere ten-minute drive from some of North Devon’s most picturesque sandy bays, it’s got family holiday written all over it. Splash about in the heated indoor pool. Let little ones burn off steam in the impressive play area (or indoor soft play and games room should the weather turn). Meet the estate’s farm animals (over fifty and counting) at feeding time. Grab yourself some ‘me time’ with an onsite yoga or aqua aerobics class. Or head off on an adventure with furry friends through the gardens, sunken lanes, meadows, and streams (perfect for little dam-builders) – there are sixteen acres to explore here.

When thoughts turn to food, pick your own at the estate’s kitchen garden and greenhouse then rustle up a bite to eat at home. Or grab something from the onsite honesty shop, stocked with frozen meals, BBQ packs from the local farm shop, and lashings of ice cream. Then all that’s left to do is put your feet up and hunker down at home. With its four-poster beds and flagstone flooring, this cute-as-a-button hideaway delivers all the cottage charms you’re chasing.

With features dating back to the sixteenth century, a stay at this former farmhouse epitomises a Devon country retreat. Within the grounds, you’ve got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and playparks aplenty for the kids. Feeding sessions at the animal enclosures take place in the morning where you can get close to the alpacas, piglets and pygmy goats. And there’s an honesty shop onsite too, selling delights like eggs straight from the farm, home-cooked ready meals and barbecue meat packs. If you want to explore the wider area, Combe Martin is a five-minute drive away with a couple of local pubs and a supermarket, and Combe Martin’s beach is just a ten-minute drive.

The home itself dated back to the sixteenth century and you can feel this history in the old beams, minstrel’s gallery above the living room and listed staircase inside. Decor touches like an old spinning wheel, suspended aviary and antique writer’s bureau bring that old-world feel back into the bones of the home and the living room is set around a traditional old stove set in stonework. The huge kitchen is designed farmhouse-style with a big range cooker and island in the centre surrounded by high chairs. The master bedroom features a carved four-posted bed and each bedroom is decorated with antique darkwoork furniture and Victoriana accents. 

Outside a delightful surprise awaits. A bubbling hot tub overlooks the gardens and out to the rolling hills beyond. There’s also dining for the group on the patio, courtesy of a barbecue and perhaps a hamper of locally-sourced meat from the honesty shop onsite.

Children will love the games room and the outdoor play area, but the jewel in the crown for them will likely be the animal closure. Meet the pygmy goats and alpacas, and admire the peacocks and ducklings. The little ones will be talking about their holiday for months to come.

Once the shelter of livestock and haybales, this old farm barn has been converted into a luxury spot for a big family or group of friends. You’ve got a hot tub and plenty of sun loungers on the deck to soak up the Devon sun. There’s dining for the group, too, courtesy of the barbecue, and a chiminea can keep things warm after the sun goes down. From the deck, you’ve got stunning views of Coulscott’s Valley. Within the grounds, you’ve also got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and outdoor area play area for the kids. Why not stop by the animal enclosures in the morning for feeding sessions with one of the fifty animals on site? 

Head inside to a triple-height drawing room, set around a wood-burning stove. The balconied landings above are home to a library-like hangout area with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and squashy sofas. The dine-in kitchen is pure farmhouse-style with a bright red Aga purring away and keeping things warm (but there’s an induction hob and regular oven if you don’t fancy cooking on the Aga). Should the weather turn, you’ve got a sunroom, looking out over the valley and guests here have access to an indoor swimming pool shared with other buildings on the farm.

It’s a six-minute drive into Combe Martin to stock up at the local supermarket or maybe pause in a local, cosy pub. Ten minutes sees you at the carpark for Combe Martin Beaches where folk take kayaks and paddleboards out on the water or stroll along the soft sand. Join the Southwest Coastal Trail, a ten-minute drive away to discover hidden bays and clifftop views for miles.

The open-plan dining area is perfect for enjoying family meals, but we particularly loved the wooden terrace, boasting stunning views of the countryside. Guests can also make use of the garden, which is shared with the old rectory next door. Take a walk down to the village of Berrynarbor for some local pub grub or spend the afternoon kayaking at the nearby Combe Martin beaches.

With sixteen acres to play with, this estate in North Devon houses a number of cottages, of which this beautifully rustic and comfortable home is one. Wander the gardens, meadows and orchards, taking care not to stroll into a stream or one of the ponds. Walk up to ‘The Lookout’, a pinnacle from where the deep green of the countryside is laid out for you to admire. After a refreshing morning walk – if you’re furry friend’s tagging along, you’ll have five acres of dog walking field at your disposal – stop off at home for a warm drink. With over fifty types of animals, including pygmy goats and hand-reared lambs, you’re not going to want to miss it. 

The estate also has an extensive kitchen garden and greenhouse open to their guests. Pick something to use in an alfresco lunch or when you’re trying something new for dinner, or simply get a private chef in to do all the cooking for you. After a long day, watch the sun dip below the horizon from your sunlounger before grabbing a packet of marshmallows from the honesty shop and heading to the shared fire pit. Roast marshmallows, stargaze, and meet new friends around the dancing flames and when the day’s activities catch up with you, duck out to retreat to the comfort of the plush double bed – but not without indulging in a steaming bubble bath.

Step out onto the wraparound deck and greet the day looking out from your idyllic lakeside lodge. It's an irresistible combination of style and substance that's been designed with couples and families in mind. Jump in the car and delve deeper into historic Exmoor countryside with a visit to the Tarr Steps, said to date back to the Bronze Age, or follow one of the many hiking trails that traverse the national park. Croyde and Ilfracombe beaches are a twenty-minute drive from home as are Lynton and Lynmouth, where you will find a unique cliff railway.

This detached stone cottage is one of seven homes on an estate on the North Devon coast. Ideal for families, the resort boasts a two-storey Wendy House, a pirate ship climbing frame, and a soft-play area for under-fives. There’s also a games room and a heated indoor pool – there’s something for everyone. The cottage is cosy and welcoming, though the steep spiral staircase won’t be for everyone. It’s also worth pointing out that there are over fifty animals on the grounds – you won’t be up close to them unless you choose to be, but you might hear them every now and then.

Enchanted Woods

Rejuvenate with sea views and fresh country air at this Grade II listed farmhouse nestled on the outskirts of postcard-pretty Berrynarbor and just a seven-minute drive from the coast.

Having served the surrounding Devon farmland for hundreds of years, this traditional stone and slate barn has experienced quite a transformation in recent times, with a spectacular mezzanine bringing all the wow factor.

In winter months, snuggle up by the wood-burning stove (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty too) or get together around the dining table. It’s an atmospheric place to spend many an evening with the lofty wooden beams overhead. 

When the sun shines, head out into the pretty garden to soak up those sea vistas from the raised terrace as you fire up the barbecue. There’s heaps of space for kids to run amuck on the lawns leading down to a babbling stream. And be sure to seek out the hammock squirreled away in the trees – it’s got your name all over it.

When it’s time to get up and at ’em, nip into Berrynarbor with its characterful pubs and inns (just an eight-minute drive) and Ilfracombe with its beautiful fishing harbour (a ten-minute drive). Or ditch the car and pick up the coastal bridle path leading down to Hele with its tiny cove – it’s as idyllic as it sounds.
 

A Thousand Years

Tucked out of the way on a quiet road in the North Devon village of West Down, this charming terraced cottage has everything you need for a couples retreat or small family getaway in the countryside. Gain entry via the porch on a pedestrian walkway before opening up the stable door to the open-plan kitchen/dining/living room featuring a log burner, comfy sofa and space under the central staircase for a dog bed – setting everything up perfectly for a cosy evening. On the other side of the stairs are your dining space and small but perfectly formed kitchen. This beautiful country home is steeped in history – the colonial-style building is Grade II listed, and it is said that former Prime Minister William Gladstone once stayed here when visiting Braunton. 

The bay window looks out onto the historic parish church, and there is an excellent village pub right next door for when you’re in need of some refreshment or a tasty pub lunch. The cosy sitting room has a wood-burning stove and comes with a complimentary basket of logs, and there’s an additional snug with a sofa and TV – just pop on one of the many DVDs available in the library and settle in for a movie night.
