This place had us on those sweeping countryside views alone – it’s just green paddocks and rolling valleys for as far as the eye can see. And that was before we’d even noticed that suntrap terrace with hot tub.

Set on a private estate made up of seven holiday cottages and a mere ten-minute drive from some of North Devon’s most picturesque sandy bays, it’s got family holiday written all over it. Splash about in the heated indoor pool. Let little ones burn off steam in the impressive play area (or indoor soft play and games room should the weather turn). Meet the estate’s farm animals (over fifty and counting) at feeding time. Grab yourself some ‘me time’ with an onsite yoga or aqua aerobics class. Or head off on an adventure with furry friends through the gardens, sunken lanes, meadows, and streams (perfect for little dam-builders) – there are sixteen acres to explore here.

When thoughts turn to food, pick your own at the estate’s kitchen garden and greenhouse then rustle up a bite to eat at home. Or grab something from the onsite honesty shop, stocked with frozen meals, BBQ packs from the local farm shop, and lashings of ice cream. Then all that’s left to do is put your feet up and hunker down at home. With its four-poster beds and flagstone flooring, this cute-as-a-button hideaway delivers all the cottage charms you’re chasing.

With features dating back to the sixteenth century, a stay at this former farmhouse epitomises a Devon country retreat. Within the grounds, you’ve got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and playparks aplenty for the kids. Feeding sessions at the animal enclosures take place in the morning where you can get close to the alpacas, piglets and pygmy goats. And there’s an honesty shop onsite too, selling delights like eggs straight from the farm, home-cooked ready meals and barbecue meat packs. If you want to explore the wider area, Combe Martin is a five-minute drive away with a couple of local pubs and a supermarket, and Combe Martin’s beach is just a ten-minute drive.

The home itself dated back to the sixteenth century and you can feel this history in the old beams, minstrel’s gallery above the living room and listed staircase inside. Decor touches like an old spinning wheel, suspended aviary and antique writer’s bureau bring that old-world feel back into the bones of the home and the living room is set around a traditional old stove set in stonework. The huge kitchen is designed farmhouse-style with a big range cooker and island in the centre surrounded by high chairs. The master bedroom features a carved four-posted bed and each bedroom is decorated with antique darkwoork furniture and Victoriana accents. 

Outside a delightful surprise awaits. A bubbling hot tub overlooks the gardens and out to the rolling hills beyond. There’s also dining for the group on the patio, courtesy of a barbecue and perhaps a hamper of locally-sourced meat from the honesty shop onsite.

They’re joined together by a secret internal door disguised as a bookcase – it’s like an Agatha Christie novel. 

This gorgeous home can be found in north Devon, tucked away amid rolling countryside. It’s just a twenty-two-minute drive from Ilfracombe beach, so paddling, surfing, and strolling along the sand can all easily be added to the day’s agenda. You might find that you’re content to stay at home though – there’s enough here to keep everyone entertained for sure. 

You might begin your day with a swim in the heated swimming pool, before settling down to a hearty breakfast. There are two kitchens so cooking is a breeze here. There are also several living rooms, so you’re never short of space – ideal when travelling as a large group. 

Children will love the games room and the outdoor play area, but the jewel in the crown for them will likely be the animal closure. Meet the pygmy goats and alpacas, and admire the peacocks and ducklings. The little ones will be talking about their holiday for months to come.

The apartment makes the most of its hillside location, with folding doors across the front of the building which flood the space with light and can be opened to let the sea breeze in. This lovely family home can be found in the attractive village of Lynton, in Exmoor National Park. It’s a delightful spot on the North Devon coast, offering easy access to beaches as well as moorland and wooded hills. You’re only a six-minute drive from Blacklands Beach – make sure you bring your bucket and spade. If you want to get back to nature while still retaining ease and comfort, this is a great choice. 

The home is cosy and comfortable, with plenty of room for everyone to gather together. There’s a traditional farmhouse-style kitchen at the heart of the home, and a dining room where you can enjoy everything from hearty cooked breakfasts to set you up for a day, to fish and chips fresh from the paper after a day on the coast. You’ll also love the petite patio garden, which is filled with flowers – it’s a wonderful spot when the sun is shining. There’s even a barbecue for those lazy sunny afternoons. 

You’re within easy walking distance of Lynton’s independent shops and cafes here, as well as some characterful pubs. After a day spent hiking along river valleys or taking in the glorious views from the Valley of Rocks – which is a three-minute drive – is there anything better than claiming a cosy pub corner for an evening?

After a long day, watch the sun dip below the horizon from your sunlounger before grabbing a packet of marshmallows from the honesty shop and heading to the shared fire pit. Roast marshmallows, stargaze, and meet new friends around the dancing flames and when the day’s activities catch up with you, duck out to retreat to the comfort of the plush double bed – but not without indulging in a steaming bubble bath.

This detached stone cottage is one of seven homes on an estate on the North Devon coast. Ideal for families, the resort boasts a two-storey Wendy House, a pirate ship climbing frame, and a soft-play area for under-fives. There’s also a games room and a heated indoor pool – there’s something for everyone. The cottage is cosy and welcoming, though the steep spiral staircase won’t be for everyone. It’s also worth pointing out that there are over fifty animals on the grounds – you won’t be up close to them unless you choose to be, but you might hear them every now and then.

That said, we feel the vistas are best enjoyed from that inviting private hot tub bubbling away out on the deck. When you're not toasting to a special occasion at the award-winning restaurant The Coach House, the kitchen has everything you could need to whip up mouthwatering homemade meals. Finally, the two en-suite bedrooms are soothing sanctuaries for a restful night's sleep. Situated right on the western edge of the wilds of Exmoor National Park and within easy striking distance of the golden sands of North Devon's picturesque coastline, you can choose to do as, or as little, as you like. 

The Combe Below

Tucked away among the Devonshire hills, we find this cosy coach house. The open-plan dining area is perfect for enjoying family meals, but we particularly loved the wooden terrace, boasting stunning views of the countryside. Guests can also make use of the garden, which is shared with the old rectory next door. Take a walk down to the village of Berrynarbor for some local pub grub or spend the afternoon kayaking at the nearby Combe Martin beaches.

The River Flows

Follow a winding road through thick woodland to find the little village of Lynmouth, where the Lyn River flows into a wide bay and this elegant bolthole awaits. Located along the riverfront above an old-fashioned gift shop, this bright and airy apartment feels like a breath of fresh sea air. The calming coastal interiors are the perfect antidote to the stress of city living – think pebble greys, cloudy creams and dusty-cornflower blues. French doors open up onto a canopied balcony, a quiet spot to listen to the river bubble down to the sea and watch the passers-by below. 

Before you get too settled in those plump sofas, you’ll want to find your bearings. Wander down the narrow streets lined with fishermen’s houses, cafes and art galleries, follow the footpath along the coast to The Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage – it’ll take you around an hour and a quarter – or head further inland to roam the heather-clad hills of Exmoor National Park. But make sure you’re back home in time to watch a knockout sunset from the balcony with a glass of wine in hand.

Or don your hiking boots and delve deep into Exmoor's National Park, just a moment from your door, or a little further, the Heddon Valley (eighteen-minute drive). It's all for the taking here.

Located in the east wing of a former gentleman's residence, this Grade II-listed apartment makes the most of its jaw-dropping cliff-top location. The historic building is bursting with original features – a Victorian skylight floods the kitchen and living space with sunshine, while an intricately carved wooden bed invites you to dream in style. The balcony in the main bedroom has panoramic views of the sea, as does the private pebbled patio – ideal for alfresco dining as you drink in the scenery. 

 Just a five-minute walk from Lynton, you'll have plenty here to keep you busy. Hop on the nearby Cliff Railway funicular and visit its twin village of Lynmouth, where you can enjoy a local ale in one of its inns, watch boats bobbing in the harbour or indulge in a Devon cream tea. The South West Coastal Path is right on your doorstep, so remember to pack your hiking boots for long walks atop the cliffs. There are also tranquil river walks close by at Watersmeet, or you can saddle up and head inland for some pony trekking at Exmoor National Park. 

Reach for the Sky

Rejuvenate with sea views and fresh country air at this Grade II listed farmhouse nestled on the outskirts of postcard-pretty Berrynarbor and just a seven-minute drive from the coast.

Having served the surrounding Devon farmland for hundreds of years, this traditional stone and slate barn has experienced quite a transformation in recent times, with a spectacular mezzanine bringing all the wow factor.

In winter months, snuggle up by the wood-burning stove (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty too) or get together around the dining table. It’s an atmospheric place to spend many an evening with the lofty wooden beams overhead.

Or ditch the car and pick up the coastal bridle path leading down to Hele with its tiny cove – it’s as idyllic as it sounds.
