Overlooking the beautiful Pevensey Bay Beach – this fabulous home makes for the perfect family seaside getaway. Dine alfresco or relax with a glass of Sussex wine in the swing seat as you take in the sublime views of the beach and sea. Inside, those vistas are just as good from the living space.

This home has been designed for comfort with its faux fur throws and soft velvet sofas. We love the sumptuous master suite with its botanical wallpaper and chiffon drapes over the four-poster bed. We can imagine opening the shutters and doors in the morning and listening to the sound of the waves – pure heaven.

After breakfast, walk from the end of your garden (under 40 yards) onto Pevensey Bay Beach and do some beachcombing. Or take some classes with the local sailing club. Pevensey Bay is known as William of Normandy's landing place in 1066 – take a six-minute drive to historical Pevensey Castle or explore the village, just four minutes in the car (a thirty-minute stroll). Further afield, Eastbourne, with its 19th-century pier and Towner Art Gallery, is under a twenty-minute ride.

The ground floor houses a mix of stylish mid-century furniture and older antique pieces that sit seamlessly alongside one another in the living and dining areas. And while the colour palette is mainly restrained and sophisticated, the vibrant green kitchen adds a welcome pop of colour. 

Double doors lead directly into the garden, where you'll find a couple of sun loungers on the patio and a romantic swing chair on the lawn. With Normans Bay beach just metres away, chances are you'll spend most of your time by the water or walking along the pebbled shores. The only pub in town is a fifteen-minute walk, but Eastbourne, Pevensey and Bexhill aren't far – the farthest a twenty-minute drive – if you'd like to explore more of the Sussex Coast. But we think there's a sleepy charm to Normans Bay that makes it perfect for families wanting a more laid-back getaway.

One thing to note, though, is that a public footpath runs through the paddock next to the garden. Inside, there’s a wood burning stove and there’s a rolltop bath in the bedroom’s en-suite. Don’t be fooled by the pictures of the spiral staircase, this home is all on one level (the first floor is only for the owners’ use). When you feel like exploring, the village of Ripe is a short walk away, and the market town of Lewes is nearby too.

We could tell this exquisite home, in the heart of the East Sussex countryside, is owned by an interior photographer – it's picture-perfect. We love the attention to detail that has gone into this place. It's been designed with entertainment in mind – relax in the hot tub in the secluded south-facing garden with a glass of Sussex fizz, dine under the shade of the vine-covered pergola or sunbathe on the loungers. Play croquet on the extensive lawn or simply spot the wildlife – if you're lucky, you may see rabbits, badgers and the occasional deer. 

Inside, there are even more options to keep your family or friends occupied. Listen to some music on the Bluetooth sound system, channel your inner Mozart at the electric piano or bang out some rhythms on the drum kit. If music isn't your thing, watch a movie in the cinema room or play some table tennis. You may even spot the resident kingfisher as it flies from the pond. When you're ready for sleep, drift off in the plush beds in the country-style bedrooms, then wake up feeling well-rested and ready to explore Kent. You're perfectly located for adventures – make the twenty-minute drive to the coastal Dungeness National Nature Reserve or reward yourself after a stroll with a pint in one of the delicious pubs nearby.

It's hard to believe that this home is not much more than twenty miles away from London. For a start, beautiful Kent countryside surrounds the property and you can fill your days with dragonfly-spotting, fruit-picking or wild-swimming in the river at the end of the garden.

The interior feels particularly rustic too, from the wooden ceiling beams and the plethora of exposed brickwork to the inglenook fireplace. That being said, there are all the modern comforts you could want here. Above the fireplace, a projection screen comes down for movie nights, while there are also tubs in all the bathrooms so you can start the day off at a super-slow pace.

The nearest village, Edenbridge, can be reached in six minutes' drive and is full of charming distractions, including a monthly farmer's market, a collection of medieval buildings and the Eden Valley Museum. Hever Castle only takes twelve minutes by car too and sits on the edge of the High Weald AONB.

Situated on a small family-run agricultural nursery, we think this luxury lodge is the perfect place to switch off and recharge. Not only is the location excellent – the idyllic South Downs are practically on your doorstep – but the attention to detail here is second-to-none. Rainfall showers and eco-friendly toiletries in the bathrooms, Netflix on the smart TVs and a panini maker in the kitchen are just a few of the things we love. The design is impeccable with blue velvet, dark greys and lots of wood. It's the perfect blend between rustic, country living and contemporary comforts, with chic furniture handmade by host Lucca. Speaking of, he'll leave a welcome hamper brimming with goodies for you to enjoy, and depending on the season, it'll contain fresh Italian fruit and veg grown on their farm. 

Days start and end here out on the deck, enjoying alfresco breakfasts in the sun and evening dips in the private hot tub. In between, set off and explore the local area – just walk out the front gates and you're on the National Trust South Downs footpath, leading towards Highdown Hill. A fourteen-minute walk away is the local pub, a few eateries and shops in Ferring, and it's only a five-minute drive to the beach. And with Worthing, Chichester and Brighton all less than an hour by car, you'll have plenty of options for adventures around West Sussex.

One of a collection of three cottages on a thirteen-acre working farm in West Sussex, this home is nowhere near as rustic as these details might suggest. Step behind the front door and you'll find an interior that's contemporarily styled with a few quirky touches.

The stark white walls and sleek tiling make for a blank canvas against which the colourful cushions and hand-painted kitchen chairs really pop off. As well as that, the modern grey kitchen and pristine bathrooms are a world away from the back-to-basics country cottages that pepper the map in these parts – the rolltop bathtub in particular is sure to make a lot of guests very happy.

When the weather's on your side, there's a private outdoor space with an alfresco table and barbecue, but it's also lovely to wander about the shared parts of the site. The hosts run a private stud and breed native ponies, so if you're lucky, you might see a foal or two during your stay.

The home is blessed when it comes to location, sitting almost equidistantly between South Downs National Park and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – as you might imagine, there's a wealth of walking routes to embark upon that start straight from the farm or just a short drive away. The seaside isn't too far away, either – you can get over to Worthing in just over half an hour in the car.

From alfresco barbecues on the vast garden terrace, sundowners on the mezzanine balcony, and relaxing in the hot tub, to large sit-down dinners indoors overlooking the downs, this house is well suited for entertaining. And there’s heaps of space to spill out in the generously sized bedrooms – spread out over two floors and united by a tasteful mix of contemporary and rustic interiors. Lofty high ceilings, polished concrete flooring (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty), and sleek architectural glazing make quite the first impression. Walking out your front door onto the beach is a novelty you'll never tire of at this Victorian period apartment perched right along Seaford's Esplanade.

For all the apartment's period grandeur and charm (think soaring ceilings and original wooden flooring), the apartment is expertly reimagined for modern living. There's a log burner fireplace for chiller evenings, lighting fast Wifi for those working remotely (if you must), and heaps of contemporary style with unique artwork and an array of houseplants bringing the space to life.

But it's the uninterrupted sea views taking all the glory here – best seen from the living room's bay window, savouring a freshly brewed morning coffee from the pod machine. Or grab a deck chair and nip over the road to the beach to decamp for a while. It's an afternoon well spent with its gently sloping shores, colourful beach huts, artisan ice cream sellers, and playground nearby.

Away from the beach, Seaford's pace of life is much slower than its party cousin, Brighton (half an hour drive along the coast). Spend days hiking over the South Downs (or, for the adventurous, parasailing) and exploring the nearby charming Sussex villages of Alfriston and East Dean (both just a ten-minute drive). Or stay local in Seaford to mooch about its galleries and shops. Just be sure to make it home for dusk – the sunset views are spell bounding.

Let’s face it – it’s that ginormous indoor private pool and state-of-the-art Swedish sauna taking all the limelight at this barn conversion property, and rightly so. It’s a luxury few expect for a home nestled away in the quiet Kent countryside. In warmer months, slide the bifold doors right back to let the sunshine in and enjoy views of the pristinely manicured gardens beyond. But what makes it truly unique is that it faces the ruins of an ancient Franciscan abbey that's of such historical importance it's been granted Scheduled Monument status. Set in the home's grounds, the abbey dates from 1285 and it's quite a sight to wake up to each morning.

Inside, the home is beautifully detailed, with character features like a meticulously restored original fireplace with log burner in the living room, Gothic plasterwork, ornate cornice to the high ceilings and stone mullion windows. But the village pub is only a short walk away and the charming medieval town of Rye, bursting with pubs, shops and restaurants, is just a few minutes by car. Explore Winchelsea’s cellar tours, 13th century church with stunning stained glass windows, farm shop, pub, and vineyard wine tours hosted by a neighbour of the home. Keen walkers can hike across the marshes, while beach lovers will be in their element – Winchelsea beach is just down the road, while both Rye Harbour and the famous dunes of Camber Sands are a short drive. You're also only two hours from London.

Positioned directly on Dungeness's public beach, this former foghorn testing station has been fully renovated into a unique getaway for two. The nearby lighthouse's foghorn still works, although we much prefer the idea of waking up to the sound of the waves and seagulls. The sea is literally on your doorstep, and huge glass doors and a small terrace maximise the idyllic views. It's more of a studio than a one-bed, but we like the single-level layout. Although phone signal is patchy here and there's no proper TV, there is wi-fi for remote working and streaming. That said, the Bose speaker system, wood burner and teak bathtub are all you need to truly unwind.

Driving up to this home, you’ll no doubt feel as though you’re entering your own version of Downton Abbey or Bridgerton – and once you step inside, it only gets grander. Wooden panel walls, classic fireplaces, beautiful chandeliers, and four poster beds add to the stately comfort of this quintessentially English manor house. Spend the morning nursing a cup of tea with breakfast, before retiring to one of the many rooms to find the most comfortable sofa – of which there are many – so you can spend a few hours getting lost in a Jane Austen novel. Afterwards walk the beautifully manicured grounds, and if you happen to reenact some of the scenes from Pride & Prejudice, we promise not to tell.  

Family trips can be spent puzzling together, or getting all hands on deck in the kitchen to prepare a feast fit for lords and ladies, whilst luxury hen and stag parties might choose to celebrate a different way. Regardless of why you came, once you experience the peaceful reprieve the manor has to offer, you won't want to leave.
