You may spot the local wildlife, including deer, foxes, and barn owls. If you have children with you, though, a fenced-off pond is nearby, so they'll need to be supervised. Inside, there's a log burner for cosy nights in and a charming circular main bedroom. It would be tempting to spend all your time here, wouldn't it? But that would be a shame as Bewl Water is a ten-minute stroll away, pretty Tunbridge Wells is a twenty-minute drive, and Camber Sands is a forty-minute ride.

Designed specifically with families in mind, you can have a multi-generational shindig here – two guests have the dairy to themselves (with its ground floor bedroom, it's perfect for older couples), while the farmhouse, spread over three floors, can house up to twelve (with ten adults), and the granary up to ten (with six adults) – the latter two buildings have living areas, as well. You won't need to be apart for long, though – you'll all likely be meeting for mealtimes at the long dining table, while the pool and large garden can fill most of the times in between.

We could tell this exquisite home, in the heart of the East Sussex countryside, is owned by an interior photographer – it's picture-perfect. We love the attention to detail that has gone into this place. It's been designed with entertainment in mind – relax in the hot tub in the secluded south-facing garden with a glass of Sussex fizz, dine under the shade of the vine-covered pergola or sunbathe on the loungers. Play croquet on the extensive lawn or simply spot the wildlife – if you're lucky, you may see rabbits, badgers and the occasional deer. 

Inside, there are even more options to keep your family or friends occupied. Listen to some music on the original 1959 jukebox or Bluetooth sound system, channel your inner Mozart at the electric piano or bang out some rhythms on the drum kit. If music isn't your thing, watch a movie in the cinema room or play some table tennis. After all that activity, unwind by the open fire if it's chilly, read a book on the Barcelona-style chair or have a soak in one of the freestanding baths.

A twenty-minute walk will take you into Cranbrook, and the beautiful town of Royal Tunbridge Wells is only half an hour away by car. Perfect as a base for walkers or cyclists, you'll find Bedgebury Pinetum and Bewl Water Reservoir close by, and the area has several National Trust properties to visit, including Sissinghurst Castle Garden, and more than fifty vineyards and breweries that are open to visitors.

Surrounded by ancient woodlands, historic iron workings and picturesque meadows, The Writer's Cottage offers a charming escape to the rolling hills of High Weald, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in East Sussex. Hastings and Rye are both nearby, and easy to reach if you’re after a day trip. The cottage itself on a working farm, which has plenty to see, from the chickens to the orchards, and even the occasional pig. The garden is a lovely place to spend afternoons, and there’s a hot tub available, as well as a hammock slung between the trees. Then, as the night draws in, it’s hard to look past the wood-burning stove, which makes for a spectacularly cosy setting.

This charming cottage is on the edge of Matfield, a village with two pubs and a great setting-off point for countryside walks. This cosy abode is ideal for those wanting to explore the Kent and Sussex countryside, as well as the local wine farms. Hastings and the coast are only a forty-five-minute drive, too. The cottage has plenty of room, with a double sofa bed in the summer room for those wanting to spread out. We love the beautiful enclosed garden and patio, where you can relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.

If you like a bit of history with your holiday, look no further than this converted stable in the rolling hills of the Kent countryside. Step inside and you'll find hints of the building's past life in every room, coupled with some modern details like underfloor heating, a lavish soaker tub and fluffy bathrobes. We're particularly fond of the exposed ceiling beams, handcrafted kitchen worktop and the repurposed ladder-turned-clothes rail upstairs, which only add to the country charm. The living room is just as quaint, with comfy armchairs gathered around a wood-burning stove, making it the perfect place to relax with a glass of wine, snuggle up with a book or enjoy a family movie night. 

Outside, the views are as idyllic as they come. There's no better spot to enjoy afternoon tea (and the scenery) than on the terrace, complete with handmade furniture fit for alfresco dining. The High Weald is yours for the taking, so don your comfiest boots and set off exploring – or just wander down to the local pub, a twenty-minute stroll away. But when you fancy a change of scenery, Rye and Hastings are half an hour by car and make excellent options for day trips.

You'll want a car to explore the nearby towns and landmarks, including Rye, Battle, and Bodiam Castle. You'll find plenty of independent shops, great eateries and local vineyards, ripe for days out.

With beautiful country views and a peaceful setting on the owners’ sheep farm, this perfectly petite home is the ideal base for exploring the Kentish Weald. You’re a ten-minute drive from the well-heeled town of Tenterden with its independent boutiques and tearooms as well as many National Trust properties. The beautiful gardens at Great Dixter, just 11 mins away, or the famous Pashley Manor make for a fabulous day out or head just up the road to the pretty weather-boarded village of Rolvenden for the weekly farmers’ market or a pub lunch. The cottage itself is a cute red-brick bolthole where sheep and donkeys graze in the fields out front. Admire the surrounding farmland from the rocking chair on the wooden deck, or watch the kids run free on the lawn. Inside, it’s a cheerful medley of white, teal and magenta and kitsch flowery curtains add a bit of character. Throw open the French doors to let the country air stream in, and perhaps curl up with one of the books from the mini-library to the sounds of sheep in the fields.

This lower-ground apartment has a great location in Royal Tunbridge Wells, but more about the address shortly. Firstly, the plush living room has been decorated to a high standard and houses the dining table and a small double sofa bed for guests five and six. The narrow, galley-style kitchen is well-equipped, too, if you want to create some home-cooked meals. If you want a bit of fresh air, up some steps outside you'll find a lawned garden to enjoy. And, when you want to explore the area, the Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery is a short stroll away. Other attractions such as Dunorlan Park with its meadows and lakes, are also within walking distance.

Inside, your hosts have done a fabulous job restoring this home whilst maintaining its original integrity. We love the exposed old brick walls and the lofty vaulted ceilings in the huge open-plan living space. When the Sussex evenings turn chilly, light the log burner, cosy up on the feather-filled sofa and enjoy a movie on the 65 inch Smart TV. Our absolute favourite feature here, though, is the sumptuous bedroom with its dramatic, dark panelled walls and super comfy natural linens.

Ideally located and close to the vibrant towns and picturesque villages of Sussex and the South Downs, this is the perfect rural retreat for those wanting to explore all that the area has to offer.

Just on the doorstep is Tunbridge Wells Common with footpaths and rocky outcrops to explore, and at the bottom of the hill, you’ll find the famous colonnaded shopping area known as The Pantiles, lined with boutiques, art galleries, cafes and outdoor seating. During the summer months, it’s also home to an open-air jazz concert held every Thursday evening. You’ll be perfectly placed for venturing further afield as well whether it be for a day of sailing at Bewl Water Reservoir or a day trip to London which can be reached in forty minutes by train.

Mornings can be spent on the all-weather tennis court, or perhaps just strolling through the three-acre gardens. On warm days there's a real treat in store, thanks to a large heated outdoor pool, and a lovely terrace for eating alfresco – with incredible views over the landscape. This home has been designed for comfort with its faux fur throws and soft velvet sofas. We love the sumptuous master suite with its botanical wallpaper and chiffon drapes over the four-poster bed. We can imagine opening the shutters and doors in the morning and listening to the sound of the waves – pure heaven.

After breakfast, walk from the end of your garden (under 40 yards) onto Pevensey Bay Beach and do some beachcombing. Or take some classes with the local sailing club. Pevensey Bay is known as William of Normandy's landing place in 1066 – take a six-minute drive to historical Pevensey Castle or explore the village, just four minutes in the car (a thirty-minute stroll). Further afield, Eastbourne, with its 19th-century pier and Towner Art Gallery, is under a twenty-minute ride.

You may even spot the resident kingfisher as it flies from the pond. Positioned directly on Dungeness's public beach, this former foghorn testing station has been fully renovated into a unique getaway for two. The nearby lighthouse's foghorn still works, although we much prefer the idea of waking up to the sound of the waves and seagulls. The sea is literally on your doorstep, and huge glass doors and a small terrace maximise the idyllic views. It's more of a studio than a one-bed, but we like the single-level layout. Although phone signal is patchy here and there's no proper TV, there is wi-fi for remote working and streaming. That said, the Bose speaker system, wood burner and teak bathtub are all you need to truly unwind.

In its past life, this unique home used to be a research base for triangulated radar – now, it’s an acclaimed designer gem, perfect as a base for a romantic getaway.
