This countryside haven is nestled in the Cotswold town of Minchinhampton. Made up of two side-by-side cottages, there's lots of room here for families and large groups. One well-behaved dog is allowed in one of the cottages for an additional fee, and your host can provide a free highchair and travel cot for little ones. All the bedrooms have their own en-suites, and while the ceiling is a bit low in one of them, there's plenty to make up for it. Outdoors, you'll find space for alfresco dining, along with a tennis court and a small stone gazebo on the expansive grounds, ideal for relaxing with a book.

Built back in the late 1920s, this cottage combines rustic features, modern conveniences and a smidgeon of rural eccentricity to make for a truly memorable stay. Inside, there are plenty of spots to gather the whole gang together, whether that's on the patchwork furnishings positioned by the wood-burning stove in the snug, sat around the dining room in the conservatory or sprawled out on the long grey corner sofa next to the eye-catching tree-trunk coffee table. Spread over three floors, this Grade II listed stone cottage nestled in the hillside is the perfect base to explore the Cotswolds. The three bedrooms,  spread over the first and second floors, all offer views of the local area, inviting you to jump out of bed and head out along one of the nearby footpaths that take you through idyllic Cotswold viewing spots. Back at home, the living room area, although too small for everyone to use at the same time, offers a wood burner in a fireplace that creates a cosy atmosphere.

Living on the grounds of a 16th century country-house in the lush green Cotswolds (the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) already creates the ideal setting for nature lovers. Once you settle in with biscuits, fresh scones and fruits on arrival (among other goodies) and befriend the curious chickens, embark on a walk through the rolling Cotswold hills and valleys. While Netflix and cocoa are perfect for rainy days in, there is a whole world out there on sunnier days. The Cotswold Way is a trail that we’d definitely recommend, with plenty of historic pubs along the way, each serving their own collection of local ales. The home is located in Painswick, a village known as The Queen of the Cotswolds and characterised by beautiful narrow streets of honey coloured stone buildings dating back to the fifteenth century. Legend has it that the Devil won’t let a hundredth tree grow. There are all sorts of cafes and restaurants in and around the village, so make sure you ask the host, Hannah, for some recommendations.

There's so much character in this old-world home. It's set on a working farm in the heart of the Slad Valley, so expect livestock as neighbours and gorgeous Cotswold views. The house is filled with traditional elements – from the cosy fireplaces and brimming bookshelves (including one that conceals a wine fridge) to the soaker baths overlooking the hills. The most unique feature is the covered cider press in the garden, which doubles as a terrace where you can bask in the scenery and share a local brew. Three dogs are welcome to join you, too – and with the Cotswold Way and other trails on your doorstep, there are plenty of picturesque walks to choose from.

Picture this: a beautiful Costwolds cottage with roses round the door and idyllic views over the neighbouring countryside. Cosy and smartly furnished, the living room's feature fireplace has a log burner for warming up on winter evenings and leads through to a stylish dining space with log storage built into the wall. Equipped with everything you could need to cook at home, the kitchen is lit by a huge ceiling lantern and a big window. Bedrooms are classic country style and we particularly love the freestanding bathtub in the main bathroom and the pretty bedroom on the top floor. The house shares a rear courtyard with some neighbouring properties but a large, private garden lies across the lane to the front.

With its wood-burning fire, window seats and pretty walled garden, this 19th-century townhouse in Tetbury delivers all the Cotswold's charm. Tucked away along a quiet, no-through lane, there are beautiful walks on the doorstep. Or for a little more bustle, Tetbury's wander-worthy centre, with its iconic antique shops, restaurants and cafes, is just a stroll away. Perfect for a multi-generational family stay, alongside two double bedrooms, there's a single bedroom that's ideal for a child or single grandparent. It's worth noting a home of this heritage does have its quirks. Expect steep staircases, low beams in places and a compact kitchen. But that's all part and parcel of characterful cottage living.

Four fishing lakes are within the wider grounds, so keen anglers should bring their rods. If you’d prefer to stay put, there is a courtyard with outside seating for relaxing with a cup of tea. Inside, the wood-burning stove is a welcome addition in the cooler months and flexible sleeping in the fourth bedroom makes this place ideal for any family or group of friends staying together.

The honey-coloured stone buildings, wisteria-adorned doorways and misty green hills of pretty Painswick couldn't get more Hollywood movie set if it tried. In fact, this town is so disarmingly attractive that it's known as the Queen of the Cotswolds. Well, adjust your crown because we've got a very princely stay right here for you. This 16th-century cottage is in the heart of the town, opposite the legendary 99 Yew Trees Church with its magnificent yew trees – can you take a wild guess how many?

Once inside you'll feel like a modern-day Henry VII thanks to exposed stonework, regal purple sofas, aged wooden beams and hefty wooden beds. In the second living room you'll find an honesty bar where your host has thoughtfully provided a selection of spirits – all donations made by you for the drinks you make are given to Emmaus, a local homelessness charity.

Outside you'll find the very private, very sunny courtyard garden is a delight, with lush, mature trees and immaculately manicured shrubs creating that Hampton Court Palace garden feel - albeit on a much smaller scale. It's a right royal escape.

Consider this grand mansion house, whose nine bedrooms - plus special highlights like juke box, maze, large terrace and extensive parklands - make it quite the place for a gathering of family or friends. The grade II-listed Regency building has no less than five indoor living spaces including a banquet-worthy dining room, which seats up to 20, a library packed with books, and sitting room with open fire and plenty of overstuffed chairs and sofas. The surroundings are impressive, part of the 28-acre Matara Estate, where rewilding projects and formal gardens have been in progress for the past 20 years. A private tour can be arranged – just ask the caretaker on your arrival. If you can manage your way out of all that (or even want to) you’ll find yourself in a charming part of the Cotswolds - with Stroud, Tetbury and Westonbirt’s National Arbotoreum nearby and Jane Austen’s beloved Bath just a 35-minute drive away.

There are several gastro pubs within a ten-minute drive, or if you fancy exploring further afield, Cirencester and Tetbury are under fifteen minutes in the car. Alternatively, marvel at over two thousand different species of trees at the stunning Westonbirt Arboretum, just over a twenty-minute ride.

This dog-friendly cottage is Cotswold charm personified. It's tucked down a tree-lined lane just outside of Tetbury, and if the chocolate-box exterior doesn't wow you, we reckon the countryside setting will. You'll be treated to views across Westonbirt Arboretum, best enjoyed in the sunny garden or from the cottage's panoramic window seat. Inside, you can curl up with a book in front of the fire, play a game around the dining table, or work remotely from the desk on the landing. There's also a handy utility room here, ideal for wiping off muddy paws and storing wellies after a long trek through the surrounding countryside.

Country Interlude

Situated on iconic Gumstool Hill in Tetbury, this three-storey cottage offers a perfect base for exploring the Cotswolds. Inside is full of the charm you’d expect from a home of its age – just mind your head on those sloping ceilings and beautiful old beams. With hiking trails within easy reach and the town centre less than a minute’s walk away, you’ll never be lost for things to do here. Visiting in May? Prepare to be entertained by the Tetbury Woolsack Races taking place right outside the front door.

This quaint cottage is the quintessential Cotswolds hideaway. The outside is picture perfect: roses and honeysuckle creep up the walls, built in Cotswolds limestone alongside the classic mint green paintwork. Inside, the exposed stonework and wooden beams have been preserved, while each room is decorated to an exacting standard. The kitchen is a joy to cook in, with sunlight streaming through the window. Chic mid century furniture, rattan rugs and pops of plant life will have you taking notes. 

Upstairs, the pièce de resistance is the standalone bath in the master bedroom, replete with luxury toiletries, where you can soak after a day of exploring. The cottage is nestled in a quiet street in Painswick, a traditional, incredibly pretty Cotswolds village. You are within eight minutes walk of a handful of excellent country pubs, as well as shops and local amenities. The Painswick Rococo garden is a stunning, peaceful place to wander around, complete with a maze, blooming flowers and 18th century architecture, and can be reached in seventeen minutes on foot. There is also a market every Thursday morning in the village, where you can buy food and local wares.

Inside, it’s modern yet characterful – we loved the original timber beams, log-burning stove and charming spiral staircase that leads to the cosy second bedroom. Should you have some work to attend to, there’s an office space for you to set up your laptop. 

Wake up with a coffee in the quiet living space before putting together a tasty breakfast in the farmhouse-style kitchen. If the weather is on your side, spill out into the garden and finish cups of tea at the bistro set in the warm sunshine. 

Pull on your comfiest shoes and get to know your surroundings. You’re a seven-minute walk from the indie shops that cluster around Market Place and five minutes from the Barton Lane entrance of Cirencester Park – an excellent place to stop for a picnic.
