This countryside haven is nestled in the Cotswold town of Minchinhampton. Made up of two side-by-side cottages, there's lots of room here for families and large groups. One well-behaved dog is allowed in one of the cottages for an additional fee, and your host can provide a free highchair and travel cot for little ones. All the bedrooms have their own en-suites, and while the ceiling is a bit low in one of them, there's plenty to make up for it. Outdoors, you'll find space for alfresco dining, along with a tennis court and a small stone gazebo on the expansive grounds, ideal for relaxing with a book.

Take time away from stressful day-to-day life with a break at this self-contained studio, part of a wellness retreat centre in the Cotswolds. On the edge of a 420-acre park, it's an easy way to immerse yourself in nature without the need to camp out. Access to any number of the centre's huge range of classes, treatments and activities gives this stay an extra wow factor. Choose from yoga, massage, botany classes, meditation and more, or just book a couple of hours in the centre's sauna and plunge pool. But you don't have to take advantage of these add-ons if you don't wish to, with a private studio with its own outdoor space and hot tub. The home may be little but it's packed with character, thanks to a charming colour scheme, sloping ceilings, wood floors and comfy furnishings. All open plan, the smart kitchen is fully equipped for you to cook at home and the addition of a sofa bed means it can sleep up to three. Keen walkers can explore the footpaths along the local waterways, while the pretty town of Nailsworth, known for its pretty shops and eateries, is just a five-minute drive.

Living on the grounds of a 16th century country-house in the lush green Cotswolds (the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) already creates the ideal setting for nature lovers. Once you settle in with biscuits, fresh scones and fruits on arrival (among other goodies) and befriend the curious chickens, embark on a walk through the rolling Cotswold hills and valleys. While Netflix and cocoa are perfect for rainy days in, there is a whole world out there on sunnier days. The Cotswold Way is a trail that we’d definitely recommend, with plenty of historic pubs along the way, each serving their own collection of local ales. The home is located in Painswick, a village known as The Queen of the Cotswolds and characterised by beautiful narrow streets of honey coloured stone buildings dating back to the fifteenth century. Legend has it that the Devil won’t let a hundredth tree grow. There are all sorts of cafes and restaurants in and around the village, so make sure you ask the host, Hannah, for some recommendations.

This barn conversion is situated on a small working dairy farm in Painswick Valley, less than a twenty-minute drive from Gloucester. Four fishing lakes are within the wider grounds, so keen anglers should bring their rods. If you’d prefer to stay put, there is a courtyard with outside seating for relaxing with a cup of tea. Inside, the wood-burning stove is a welcome addition in the cooler months and flexible sleeping in the fourth bedroom makes this place ideal for any family or group of friends staying together.


Nesting Owls

Spread over three floors, this Grade II listed stone cottage nestled in the hillside is the perfect base to explore the Cotswolds. The three bedrooms,  spread over the first and second floors, all offer views of the local area, inviting you to jump out of bed and head out along one of the nearby footpaths that take you through idyllic Cotswold viewing spots. Back at home, the living room area, although too small for everyone to use at the same time, offers a wood burner in a fireplace that creates a cosy atmosphere.

It’s perfectly situated for exploring the Cotswolds AONB and the nearby trails for walking, hiking or cycling. Sitting in the grounds of the owner's home, a wisteria frames the front door and there’s a warm welcome as soon as you enter from the cosy lounge with its wood-burning stove. Step outside and there’s a lawned garden and decking area, where you can soak up the peaceful surroundings and enjoy alfresco dining. This place is a home away from home.

Sitting opposite a cosy pub on the edge of Rodborough Common near Stroud, this characterful cottage offers the perfect escape for those looking to explore the beauty of the Cotswolds. If you'd rather do some sightseeing, the sixteenth-century Rococo Garden is just a short walk away and is sure to delight the whole family.

There's so much character in this old-world home. It's set on a working farm in the heart of the Slad Valley, so expect livestock as neighbours and gorgeous Cotswold views. The house is filled with traditional elements – from the cosy fireplaces and brimming bookshelves (including one that conceals a wine fridge) to the soaker baths overlooking the hills. The most unique feature is the covered cider press in the garden, which doubles as a terrace where you can bask in the scenery and share a local brew. Three dogs are welcome to join you, too – and with the Cotswold Way and other trails on your doorstep, there are plenty of picturesque walks to choose from.

The honey-coloured stone buildings, wisteria-adorned doorways and misty green hills of pretty Painswick couldn't get more Hollywood movie set if it tried. In fact, this town is so disarmingly attractive that it's known as the Queen of the Cotswolds. Well, adjust your crown because we've got a very princely stay right here for you. This 16th-century cottage is in the heart of the town, opposite the legendary 99 Yew Trees Church with its magnificent yew trees – can you take a wild guess how many?

Once inside you'll feel like a modern-day Henry VII thanks to exposed stonework, regal purple sofas, aged wooden beams and hefty wooden beds. In the second living room you'll find an honesty bar where your host has thoughtfully provided a selection of spirits – all donations made by you for the drinks you make are given to Emmaus, a local homelessness charity.

Outside you'll find the very private, very sunny courtyard garden is a delight, with lush, mature trees and immaculately manicured shrubs creating that Hampton Court Palace garden feel - albeit on a much smaller scale. It's a right royal escape.

There is also a market every Thursday morning in the village, where you can buy food and local wares.

Inside, although some areas such as the bathroom may feel a little dated,  you’ll find traditional features, open fires and all the home comforts you could want. With Stroud and Nailsworth a ten-minute drive away, you can enjoy country comforts yet easy access to beautiful Cotswold towns.

Cosy and smartly furnished, the living room's feature fireplace has a log burner for warming up on winter evenings and leads through to a stylish dining space with log storage built into the wall. Equipped with everything you could need to cook at home, the kitchen is lit by a huge ceiling lantern and a big window. Bedrooms are classic country style and we particularly love the freestanding bathtub in the main bathroom and the pretty bedroom on the top floor. The house shares a rear courtyard with some neighbouring properties but a large, private garden lies across the lane to the front.

Both Glouster and Cheltenham are a short drive away, but beautiful nature, picturesque villages, and country pubs accessible via cross-country walks are the main draw here. As it's an annex, you won't be completely secluded outside, but the home is yours alone and has a private entrance. While there are plenty of welcome authentic touches – especially the wooden lintels and exposed brickwork – the sloping ceiling in the bedroom might inconvenience taller guests.
