It’s also a half-hour drive to Wells-Next-the-Sea, a pretty seaside town in the Norfolk Coast AONB. The 19th-century stable block has been transformed into a cosy country bolthole for a family or group of friends. You can spot the village’s old church tower from your private garden, where a patio provides a place to sit in the sun and fire up the gas barbecue, and a vast lawn stretches before you. Or, head inside to the sunny kitchen diner where dining is set for the whole group. Scandi-chic interiors make for a relaxing living room, set around a traditional wood-burning stove should the weather turn chilly. Bedrooms blend in with the estate’s wonderful ladscape, with autumnal tree motifs on feature walls lulling you off to sleep. The home’s private garden features a heated swimming pool for sunny days and you can still sit and listen to the birdsong in the huge conservatory if the weather turns. Or, head inside to the games room for a round of pool or foosball by the wood-burning stove. The kitchen, with its gas range cooker and oodles of prep space, is more than big enough for the bustle of family breakfast time, and the old servant’s bells are still on display. Tucked into a corner of the kitchen you'll find a little TV snug, warmed by the purr of an Aga. Gather the group in the dining room with its view across the fields outside, or head up to the privacy of beautiful bedrooms, each decorated with its own motif – paisley and peacocks perhaps, or a princess-style four-poster and freestanding tub. This home is a real showstopper. It’s a Georgian home in the small historic village of South Raynham, in the heart of north west Norfolk’s countryside. Surrounded by walking trails and lush grounds, it’s a real escape – as soon as you spot the mansion-like house on the approach, you’ll feel your worries melt away. 

Ideal for entertaining large groups, this home has heaps of space, with a room for every occasion. You might begin your day in the breakfast room, tucking into a hearty breakfast together as you plan your day. Perhaps you’ll then sip coffee in the orangery, which looks out over the heated swimming pool. After a dip, tennis might be on the cards, or if that’s a little too energetic, perhaps a refined game of croquet on the lawn? You might explore the grounds, or curl up in the sitting room with a book and enjoy some peace and quiet. Kids will love the games room on the second floor, where they can play table football and watch movies. 

If you’ve something to celebrate, the formal dining room is a fabulous spot for dinner. You’ll dine beneath a chandelier in this grand space – you’ll definitely want to pop open the Champagne. For more informal meals, we love the alfresco dining area. Fire up the barbecue and dine late into the evening outside, alongside the pool. It’s easy to forget you’re in England here – it feels almost Mediterranean. 

There’s plenty to keep you at the house during your stay, but if you want to venture out, you’ll be well rewarded. There are gorgeous walks along River Wensum to be discovered, starting from the 17th-century Raynham Hall just outside the village. Further afield, you can paddle in the shallows at Holkham Beach, which is thirty-three minutes away by car. Nature-lovers will want to drive the thirty-two minutes to the seal colony at Blakeney Point – it’s a wonderful sight. 

There’s something for everyone at this fabulous home. You’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left the grounds.

A True Love Of Mine

On arrival at the idyllic Holkham Estate on the North Norfolk coast, you’ll feel like you’ve walked right onto the set of Downton Abbey. You’ll find this charming gatehouse from the mid-1800s on the southern fringes of the estate. Its style is simple and elegant, which lets the gorgeous countryside on the other side of the decorative lead windows do all the talking. Touches such as the log burner in the living room and a winged velvet sofa keep things cosy and faithful to the home’s character. There’s plenty of hiking and cycling to enjoy on the estate, not to mention checking out the grand main house, one of the UK's most spectacular country piles. But our top tip is the windswept Holkham Beach – an unspoilt stretch of coast where Gwyneth Paltrow walked through the sand in the last scene of Shakespeare in Love.

The host is an interior designer with a true collector’s eye and has filled the cottage with an eclectic mix of vintage pieces and curios. From taxidermy vignettes to Serge Moullie inspired art, there are unexpected details at every turn. 

Summer’s evenings are spent in the fragrant country garden drinking Pimms and looking out over meadowland, and in the winter months, the wood burner keeps the cosiness levels running high. You’re just a short drive from North Norfolk’s stunning sandy beaches, and the bustling town of Burnham Market. If you don’t feel like a drive, the surrounding countryside is ripe for walking, and the local pub is just five minutes away.

This Grade II Listed cottage has a fantastic location right in the centre of Wells-next-the-Sea. Do some beachcombing on Wells-next-the-Sea Beach (around twenty minutes on foot). Then, afterwards, have a stroll along the Quay, a one-minute walk away, and enjoy some fish and chips or pick up some catch of the day from the pretty harbour. There are plenty of local pubs and restaurants, as well as a delicatessen, butchers and fishmonger within a five-minute stroll. Take some local produce back to this lovely home, prepare a meal in the modern kitchen, and then savour it at the table in the sunny courtyard. Or when the weather turns chilly, light the log burning stove (your lovely host provides a starter pack of logs in the colder months) and relax with a glass of wine on the sofa. This stylish cottage is everything you would want from a seaside retreat – we love the original features, such as the old beams, which blend beautifully with the chic furnishings. With so much out and about, too, you’ll probably need to book again to fit it all in.

Those 19th-century farmers knew what they were doing when they built these two divine cottages tucked away in the sleepy Norfolk village of Wighton. Now joined together and exquisitely reimagined into a luxurious seaside haven just an eleven-minute drive from the beach, this place has got charm by the trough load.

Inside, while the old 1800s bones remain (those exposed oak beams are everything), there's nothing twee about its interiors. Every inch of the home feels like an interior magazine come to life with heirloom-worthy antiques, vibrant textiles, and curated artwork bringing layers of interest and style.

Sunny mornings call for lazy coffees on the garden terrace as kids and furry friends run about on the lawns. But if the weather doesn't buck up, that breakfast room with French doors overlooking the garden is just as inviting, with the Aga keeping things toasty.

After exploring all this town and the Norfolk coast offers, relax by the wood-burning stove (a starter pack of logs is provided in the colder months) or enjoy a coffee in the cute courtyard on warm days. Your lovely host has done a fantastic job sympathetically updating this place whilst retaining its original charm. When you're ready for a bit of rest, climb the traditional Norfolk winder stairs to the characterful and comfy bedrooms, before starting another exciting day of Norfolk adventures. This home is perfect for families, couples and friends who want to enjoy the great outdoors all year round.

The building was originally constructed as a Methodist chapel, and it retains some of that spiritual atmosphere, with a piano, drum kit and guitar – plus a fully equipped kitchen – at hand for whenever musical or culinary inspiration strikes.  Located in the village of Briston and just fifteen minutes from the coast, it's a great base to explore the natural beauty of the area and charming towns like Holt and Cromer. The butcher, baker and greengrocer (no candlestick maker, unfortunately), plus a Co-op, are only around a hundred metres away. At the same time, the local pub serves good food and is only a short walk away. If you'd like to see how the other half live, there are many stately homes and gardens to visit nearby, including Sandringham, the Blickling Estate and Holkham Hall, all within a thirty-five-minute drive.
