Is there anything more quintessentially British than staying in a converted pub? We don't think so. Dating back to 1715, this Grade 2 listed ale house in the North Norfolk town of Holt is a delightful escape. Recently refurbished, the owners have taken great care to restore the original wooden beams, brickwork and fireplaces. We love the bedrooms, all named after teas. After a busy day, there’s nothing better than relaxing in front of the wood burner with some fish and chips from across the road. And of course, pour yourself a pint. You're in a former pub after all.

Surrounded by bustling bars, cafés and shops, you'll have plenty to do in the area. Spend the day strolling through the village – we recommend browsing the local art galleries or having a spot of afternoon tea at one of the many tearooms (there's a charming one right next door). If you're longing for sea and sand, drive fifteen minutes and you'll reach Sheringham Beach and the Norfolk Coast.

Built back in 1835, this cottage in the Norfolk town of Holt is approaching its 200th birthday, although you wouldn't be able to tell from the contemporary interior. The soothing palette of muted greys and chic furnishings are completely in keeping with the 21st century rather than the 19th, save for an eclectic collection of curios and mementoes on the shelves.

Arguably the home's best feature is a modern addition – the conservatory is blessed with natural light and is a lovely place to enjoy dinner regardless of the season. It also gives you a view of the back garden, which has another table plus a charcoal barbecue ready and waiting for summer evening feasts.

One thing that hasn't changed in the years since the house has been standing is  the quality of the location. The Georgian architecture of Holt is lovely to wander about and there are shops, cafes and art galleries with which to fill up your afternoon. Further afield, the rugged Norfolk coastline isn't too far away – Salthouse Beach takes ten minutes to reach in the car.

If we were being picky, the third bedroom feels a little snug compared to the other king-sized bedrooms. Also, there's no outdoor space to speak of. But with Holt's vibrant High Street and Country Park within walking distance and the stunning North Norfolk Coast just a short drive away, it's easy to get out in the great outdoors.

This quirky converted church makes for an ideal creative countryside retreat. The open-plan downstairs, where the pews used to be, has been given over to create a vast double-height space with one double bedroom leading off it and a single and master bedroom found upstairs. The building was originally constructed as a Methodist chapel, and it retains some of that spiritual atmosphere, with a piano, drum kit and guitar – plus a fully equipped kitchen – at hand for whenever musical or culinary inspiration strikes.  Located in the village of Briston and just fifteen minutes from the coast, it's a great base to explore the natural beauty of the area and charming towns like Holt and Cromer. The butcher, baker and greengrocer (no candlestick maker, unfortunately), plus a Co-op, are only around a hundred metres away. At the same time, the local pub serves good food and is only a short walk away. If you'd like to see how the other half live, there are many stately homes and gardens to visit nearby, including Sandringham, the Blickling Estate and Holkham Hall, all within a thirty-five-minute drive.

This yellow cottage dates back to the 1850s, so if you're looking for traditional charm with contemporary twists, this is the place for you. Our favourite spot is the light-filled conservatory, which is the perfect spot to indulge in afternoon tea or a glass of wine under the curved roof.

In the living room, cosy is an understatement – plush sofas beckon you to curl up with a good book beneath the wooden beams, while the wood burner and collection of board games are the very things for chillier nights at home. Come dinnertime, make your way to the kitchen and cook up a storm on the Aga stove, preparing a range of mouth-watering fare to share in the dining room. Better yet, dine alfresco in the sun-kissed garden as the day slowly fades and feel the salt-tinged air on your skin.

 Brinton is a small hamlet tucked away from the more lively spots on the Norfolk Coast. But that doesn't mean it's boring – you'll find excellent walking footpaths and cycling routes along the lanes, as well as an award-winning pub in Hunworth a short drive away. Holt is close by, too – ideal if you're after cafes, art galleries, boutique shops and fantastic restaurants. If it's the sea you crave, head to Wells-next-the-Sea or Holkham – both about a half-hour away by car.

Nestled in the Norfolk countryside, just a twenty-two-minute drive from Cromer and the coast, this converted barn is the perfect blend of old and new. Inside, you'll find charming period features like wooden beams and exposed stone walls, but the real wow factor is the open-plan living space. We particularly love the bi-fold doors that open onto the garden – when the weather is nice, they flood the room with light. When the sun goes down, we can't think of anything more delightful than popping a log on the wood-burner, grabbing a glass of wine and playing a game or two before bedtime. 

With the Georgian town of Holt an eight-minute drive away and the Salthouse Marshes reachable in fifteen, this cosy cottage promises plenty of Norfolk adventures. Stay local and ramble along the walking paths and country lanes on your doorstep – ideal for exploring with your four-legged friends in tow – or, take it easy and relax with a pamper session at the award-winning spa in the village, followed by a pint and delicious dinner at the gastropub.

The outdoor spaces are a feature of the home. The top area is fully enclosed with mature planting and features a stone terrace on two levels. Then there’s a gate to the lower garden with gentle sloping lawned area, and best of all there’s a small path between the two gardens that leads down to the Norfolk Coastal Path for the use of local residents.

Once you can bear to tear yourself away from this home, explore your town base of Blakeney and its harbour, marshes, and sweeping pretty landscapes. Keen walkers will love the North Norfolk Coastal path to Morston, a combination of sea breeze and stunning views. The Norfolk coast has so much countryside to see – drive for twenty-five minutes and discover historic Holkham, which has award-winning beaches, a deer park, and a fruit farm where you can pick your own berries.

If you’re hoping to visit the seals, Blakeney Point is home to both the common seals during the summer months and grey seals during the winter. There's something for everyone on this stretch of the North Norfolk Heritage Coast, no matter if you prefer sea swimming or walking along the shore with the dog. Try your hand at crabbing, visit the 15th-century brick-vaulted undercroft of Blakeney Guildhall, or soak up the rural mentality with lunch in a cosy local pub.

After a long day exploring your Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there's no better spot to unwind than this inviting homestead. Select a bottle of wine from the wine cooler and sink into the cushy sofa with a book from the shelves, or rustle up a comforting dinner with the local produce you picked up from the fishmonger. As cosy and quaint as you'd expect a cottage to be, this Victorian one in the heart of Blakeney is brimming with charm. Everything from the farmhouse-style kitchen to the wood-burning stove adds a rustic homeliness that might not be to everyone's taste but adds to the comfort here. Norfolk Coast explorers will find Salhouse Beach an eleven-minute drive away, a nice segue to discovering dotted gems further up and down the coastline. And it wouldn't be right for a traditional brick and flint house to not be within walking distance of a quintessentially British pub, which you can find alongside other shops. Though there's no parking available, a car is advisable to make the most of your stay.
