Dating back to 1715, this Grade 2 listed ale house in the North Norfolk town of Holt is a delightful escape. Recently refurbished, the owners have taken great care to restore the original wooden beams, brickwork and fireplaces. We love the bedrooms, all named after teas. After a busy day, there’s nothing better than relaxing in front of the wood burner with some fish and chips from across the road. And of course, pour yourself a pint. You're in a former pub after all.

Surrounded by bustling bars, cafés and shops, you'll have plenty to do in the area. Spend the day strolling through the village – we recommend browsing the local art galleries or having a spot of afternoon tea at one of the many tearooms (there's a charming one right next door). If you're longing for sea and sand, drive fifteen minutes and you'll reach Sheringham Beach and the Norfolk Coast.

Spend your days on the sofa catching up on your favourite shows, type away at the dedicated workspace, or challenge someone to a game of football on the open-plan mezzanine. It looks over the dining table downstairs, so you'll be able to smell when supper is ready.

This quirky converted church makes for an ideal creative countryside retreat. The open-plan downstairs, where the pews used to be, has been given over to create a vast double-height space with one double bedroom leading off it and a single and master bedroom found upstairs. The building was originally constructed as a Methodist chapel, and it retains some of that spiritual atmosphere, with a piano, drum kit and guitar – plus a fully equipped kitchen – at hand for whenever musical or culinary inspiration strikes.  Located in the village of Briston and just fifteen minutes from the coast, it's a great base to explore the natural beauty of the area and charming towns like Holt and Cromer. The butcher, baker and greengrocer (no candlestick maker, unfortunately), plus a Co-op, are only around a hundred metres away. At the same time, the local pub serves good food and is only a short walk away. If you'd like to see how the other half live, there are many stately homes and gardens to visit nearby, including Sandringham, the Blickling Estate and Holkham Hall, all within a thirty-five-minute drive.

Designed in the Italian garden style, the patio here is sure to transport you from the expansive Norfolk landscape straight to the Italian Renaissance. Dine al fresco, bask in the sunshine and enjoy the sweet smell of the roses in spring and summer. You’re also more than welcome to explore the larger grounds, shared with the owners, to catch a glimpse of the barn owls, pheasants, deer and more. Competitive guests can also engage in a game of tennis on the private court. Inside, the recently converted stable boasts original wood beams, double-height ceilings and a striking, modern mezzanine which connects the main living area to the bedrooms. Luckily, all rooms benefit from large windows that, thanks to this home’s position on the edge of the Glaven Valley, offer picturesque views of the countryside and the abundance of wildlife that lives here.

This yellow cottage dates back to the 1850s, so if you're looking for traditional charm with contemporary twists, this is the place for you. Our favourite spot is the light-filled conservatory, which is the perfect spot to indulge in afternoon tea or a glass of wine under the curved roof.

In the living room, cosy is an understatement – plush sofas beckon you to curl up with a good book beneath the wooden beams, while the wood burner and collection of board games are the very things for chillier nights at home. Come dinnertime, make your way to the kitchen and cook up a storm on the Aga stove, preparing a range of mouth-watering fare to share in the dining room. Better yet, dine alfresco in the sun-kissed garden as the day slowly fades and feel the salt-tinged air on your skin.

 Brinton is a small hamlet tucked away from the more lively spots on the Norfolk Coast. But that doesn't mean it's boring – you'll find excellent walking footpaths and cycling routes along the lanes, as well as an award-winning pub in Hunworth a short drive away. Holt is close by, too – ideal if you're after cafes, art galleries, boutique shops and fantastic restaurants. If it's the sea you crave, head to Wells-next-the-Sea or Holkham – both about a half-hour away by car.

Located within an AONB, you’re perfectly placed for hiking the trails and spotting the wildlife in Blakeney National Nature Reserve, sighting the basking seals on a seal tour through Blakeney Point, or strolling the shores along the heritage coast. 

The options for seaside excursions are endless, but when you're ready to put your walking feet up, come home and relax in this charming and modern cottage. The luscious garden is an excellent spot to soak up the last of the day's sun or stretch out on the plump sofas with a glass of natural wine and the crackling fire. Fix up a comforting dinner in the kitschy kitchen or, if you're not in the mood to cook, grab some fish and chips from your local. A renovated barn in rural north Norfolk, this functional home places you within easy reach of both market towns and the seaside. The long living area fits everyone in for dinner and games, and the large kitchen means you don't need to eat out every night – instead, enjoy the seclusion offered by the home's location and try some rustic cooking. The interior isn't very modern, and the bedrooms look a little dated here. That said, we love the skylights – what a perfect way to wake up in the mornings.

You’ll find this adults-only, flint cottage tucked away in a quiet cul-de-sac just a five-minute stroll from Holt’s thriving high street. Perfect for two couples wanting to holiday together, there are two bathrooms to speed mornings along. The interiors may feel a little dated for some, but it’s all well-cared for, and the garden opening onto a private, enclosed wood with visiting deer is a nice touch. Location-wise, there’s plenty to walk to in Holt, but you’ll need a car for beach days. Get off to a flying start in Blakeney, just five miles away.

Try your hand at crabbing, visit the 15th-century brick-vaulted undercroft of Blakeney Guildhall, or soak up the rural mentality with lunch in a cosy local pub.

With ‘little’ being the operative word, this tiny hamlet is landmarked by a village hall, local church, and gorgeous traditional cottages like yours. Coming home to this adobe after a day in the city is a real taste of country life

Secluded and isolated, the original red brickwork and roof contrast beautifully with the lush trees and surrounding fields. We love the colourful flowers around the entrance, creating a magical scene lifted right from a fairytale. Crunching up the gravel to the front door, you might want to take a moment to sit on the bench and soak up the sun before venturing inside. Another option would be to head round to your private garden, where a verdant lawn and patio furniture awaits – perfect for afternoon tea and scones. 

When the evening rolls in, there’s no better place to be than in the lounge. It offers the English country comforts you’d expect, but without feeling old-fashioned or frumpy in any way. The glow from the log-burner slights up stylish grey sofas and a Berber-style patterned rug in muted tones, while a chunky timber beam lines the ceiling above. For trips further afield, we recommend driving to nearby Holt where you can visit the North Norfolk Railway or dip your toes into the sea at Salthouse beach.

The Olde Mint

Perched on the edge of Blickling Hall Estate and fringing the chocolate-box village of Oulton, the setting for this adult-only hideaway is dreamy. All the cottagecore essentials are ticked off with original beams, a wood-burning stove, and a pretty, south-facing garden to call your own. Although it’s worth noting the home’s low beams and restricted head height might not suit the vertically blessed. With no amenities within walking distance, you’ll need a car here. Head to Holt for a dose of sea air (a twenty-minute drive). Or, closer to home, nearby Aylsham for a taste of market town life.

Follow the Sea

Built back in 1835, this cottage in the Norfolk town of Holt is approaching its 200th birthday, although you wouldn't be able to tell from the contemporary interior. The soothing palette of muted greys and chic furnishings are completely in keeping with the 21st century rather than the 19th, save for an eclectic collection of curios and mementoes on the shelves.

Arguably the home's best feature is a modern addition – the conservatory is blessed with natural light and is a lovely place to enjoy dinner regardless of the season. It also gives you a view of the back garden, which has another table plus a charcoal barbecue ready and waiting for summer evening feasts.

One thing that hasn't changed in the years since the house has been standing is  the quality of the location. The Georgian architecture of Holt is lovely to wander about and there are shops, cafes and art galleries with which to fill up your afternoon. Further afield, the rugged Norfolk coastline isn't too far away – Salthouse Beach takes ten minutes to reach in the car.

Not far from the Norfolk coast, you can explore the marshes in Cley-next-the-Sea, spot seals in Blakeney or sprawl out on the sandy beaches in Wells-next-the-Sea and Holkham, about twenty minutes away by car.
