The very embodiment of all things English and classic, there’s an open-plan living and dining area with a magnificent inglenook fireplace at its heart and storybook armchairs feathered by sheepskins and plump cushions just waiting for you to sink right in. Regular visitors to Norfolk will instantly recognise the dusty ginger colour of this cottage's facade. That's because it's constructed from Carrstone, an iron-oxide-rich variation of sandstone used to construct many of the local region's most famous buildings. Along with the surrounding crop fields, this exterior makes for a picturesque backdrop while sitting out in the garden.

Inside, the design is a little more contemporary, if straightforwardly so. The wood floors and exposed brickwork around the multi-fuel stove are in keeping with the rustic location, while the large kitchen and bathrooms are a lot more sleek and modern in comparison.

When you fancy a day out, the coastal town of Hunstanton and its beaches take just over five minutes to reach in the car and Sandringham Estate is only twenty minutes' drive away, too. Scolt Head Island National Nature Reserve sits the same amount of time away and is wonderful for bird spotting.

If you're looking for a luxurious, romantic retreat in Norfolk – this newly refurbished cottage could be the place for you. Unwind with a glass of Champagne in the hot tub at the end of the beautiful garden, filled with roses and other cottage garden plants. Later, settle down in the reading corner, next to the log burner, with a good book and a glass of wine from the wine chiller. We adore the vistas over the green and village pond from this cottage – it's the picture-perfect view. As night falls, have a long soak in the free-standing bath with the organic toiletries provided – utter bliss. Your lovely hosts have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable, from bathrobes and slippers to treats for your four-legged friends (if you're bringing the pooch). The next day enjoy breakfast in the light, contemporary glass dining room overlooking the garden. Then, pop over the road for lunch if you don't fancy cooking – one of the top five gastropubs in the area is right opposite. Afterwards, perhaps walk off all that lovely food with a stroll around the village with its pretty duck ponds. For a day at the beach – Old Hunstanton Beach is a thirty-minute drive away – so you can have the best of both coast and country. It doesn't get much more idyllic than this. 

The Shelduck

This Grade II-listed home in Norfolk boasts views of the sea on clear days. It’s less than a twenty-minute walk to the coast, where you can follow long stretches of sandy beach along the Norfolk Coast Path or Peddars Way. After a day’s hiking the countryside, this traditional flint cottage makes for the perfect restful retreat. The home has plenty of original features, with stone walls, wooden cottage doors and exposed beams. It’s owned by an interior designer, and the grey and blue colour scheme creates a calming environment. So make a hot drink in the beamed kitchen and sink into one of the plump armchairs in front of the wood-burning stove for the ultimate night in.

You'll be in good company with a stay at this pretty carrstone cottage. Set less than two miles from Sandringham in the thriving village of Dersingham –⁠ the Royal Estate formerly owned this home. While the decor may be a little dated, and the bedrooms are pocket-sized, we can forgive that for its pretty garden and a wood-burning fire. It's worth noting that if five of you share, the last guest will sleep on a daybed downstairs in the snug. Location-wise, a local pub, award-winning butchers, and bustling cafes are within walking distance. Though you'll need to hop in the car for beach walks with your four-legged friends.

Holkham Estate is one of the most striking and popular stately homes on the North Norfolk Coast, and for good reason. Its rich history and impressive grounds blow away all that come to see it. So, what if we told you that you and your significant other could escape here for a truly magical and private getaway? Originally built in 1847, this lodge is a beautiful example of the revivalist architectural styles that were so popular in the 19th Century. Meanwhile, an upstairs galleried landing with a vaulted ceiling and cosy open fire provides more of an unassuming, homely charm, while downstairs the garden room basks in natural daylight. Outdoors, the garden provides plenty of space for children and the family dog to roam freely. There's also plenty to do locally too. Spend a day on the beach at one of Norfolk’s stunning sandy beaches (several are dog-friendly), walk the Peddars Way and pop over to neighbouring Great Massingham, a picturesque village with two charming duck ponds and the Dabbling Duck Inn.

Such a great village deserves an appropriately unique stay, which is where this home comes in. The stone exterior gives the whole place a country feel, but the contemporary, velvety interior guarantees a comfortable stay. It's well-suited to families, and your host has made sure to make it feel as welcoming as possible. Each room is filled with light, especially the open-plan, dual-aspect kitchen and living area. That said, our favourite spot to unwind is the private garden. With a pizza oven, heated pavilion, and views of Westgate Orchard, it's the definition of an idyllic escape.
