Days spent lounging on the sand are definitely a given, but, if you'd rather enjoy a laid-back afternoon at home, the garden is the perfect spot. A timber playset is available for children, a lawn is great for furry friends, and outdoor seating lets parents relax with a refreshing drink. We think the nautical-inspired interiors are lovely, too. The log burner keeps things cosy during the cooler months and the soaker bath is just what you need after a day exploring the Northumbrian coast. Leisure club membership is also included, although a small entry charge applies.

Bamburgh’s location on the Northumberland Coast makes it splendid for a trip out on the water, just as much as fish and chips on the shore. Between the dunes and the green perimeter of this tiny town, your house sits pretty at just over half a mile from Bamburgh Beach and its famed castle. But if you choose sea over the land, you’ll be well looked after – this town is home of Victorian maritime heroine Grace Darling.

While this fabulous holiday home is certainly on land, there are still nods to the coast. Grey wooden slats on the exterior are reminiscent of a traditional wooden rowboat, while the front door even features a perfectly round porthole. You can admire it from the outside while sitting on your patio with a chilled bottle of fizz, or on the lush lawn surrounded by a picnic and a few G&Ts. And there’s even more admiring to do inside.

We love the elegant interiors – a striking scene upon entering the lounge. White beams, dark hardwood floors, and Scandi-style furniture set a modern tone. But rustic tradition isn’t far away, with an Aga range cooker and log-burner taking you back to days of old. Beadnell Bay, only a few miles north, is great for sailing, windsurfing and scuba diving too. This home has sea views from the doorstep and access to a small patio area which is part of a communal courtyard shared with other neighbours. Inside, there’s a wood burner for cosy nights in, but at full capacity, there’s only one bathroom for five guests.

Guests love how spaced apart the bedrooms feel across two floors. Form an orderly queue for first dibs on that swoon-worthy bedroom with a separate dressing area and deep bath for an evening soak. Though that immaculate second king-sized bedroom with a Juliet balcony to steal a glimpse of the sea is an impressive consolation prize. And while there's no outdoor space to speak of, we don't think you'll mind with the harbour and beach so close.

The main highlight, we’d say though, is the fact that it’s just a ten-minute walk from the beach. Beadnell Bay's long stretch of sand is perfect for bucket-and-spade holidays, while the locale also boasts many coastal walks with stunning views of cliff-top ruins, including Dunstanburgh Castle.

Shoreside Stories

Situated in the quiet hamlet of Waren Mill, this charming miller’s cottage has been transformed into a comfortable space for those wanting some rest and relaxation on the Northumberland coast. Inside, the home is laidback with unpretentious furnishings and blue hues that channel the seaside surroundings. The cosy living area commands curling up with a good book in front of the wood-burning stove and the well-lit kitchen diner is ideal for lively breakfasts before long walks through the countryside. 

When the weather is on your side, enjoy a cup of tea at the bistro set on the patio then jump in the car and head to Bamburgh Beach – it’s only a six-minute drive away. After a revitalising dip in the North Sea, spend the afternoon strolling along the sweeping sands and exploring Bamburgh Castle. Stop for a bite to eat in the village’s fine selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants or head back to your abode and treat your loved ones to a hearty home-cooked supper.

A former farmer's cottage just a short drive from Bamburgh and Seahouses, this place has had quite a facelift in recent years and now offers a comfortable and smart home with plenty of luxury touches. A huge vaulted ceiling hangs over the sociable, open-plan living space, where you'll find a high-end kitchen, comfy seating area and dining table – along with big windows and a rather special view. In all its glory, Bamburgh Castle is visible on the skyline just across the nearby farm buildings.

Bright, cosy bedrooms and two bathrooms provide plenty of space for a family or a few friends to share, and we love the ground floor bedroom with patio doors opening to the garden. 

A great spot for keen walkers and beach lovers, it's just a few minutes drive to the coast (the beach is 2 miles away) and even less to the castle itself. Set in a quiet farming hamlet, you'll have peace and quiet, as well as the local amenities, pubs and cafes just a few minutes away.

Over the Barns

Lying just around the corner from Seahouses Harbour, the stone facade of this home looks like it's been a fixture here for years, but it's a fairly recent addition. This becomes abundantly clear as you glance around the contemporarily styled interior for the first time.

Spread across a single floor, the colour palette of muted greys and whites is bright and inviting, while there's a wealth of surface space in the sleek kitchen for when you want to whip up seafood banquets. The designers haven't completely done away with rustic cosiness, though – what could be a cuter way of ending a productive day than gathering around the crackling flames by the living room's stove?

As already mentioned, the town's harbour is just a three-minute walk away and it's possible to head out on nautical expeditions, including diving and trips to the bird-spotting hotspot, Farne Islands. If you prefer to stay on land, there are walking routes and scenic points aplenty in the surrounding Northumberland Coast AONB, too.

Situated right on the water in Northumberland, a few miles from Bamburgh, this home is a great place to stay if you’re looking to explore the North Sea Coast. Inside, you’ll find a stylish kitchen and living area, while outside, there’s a private garden, where you can spend time relaxing in the sun or dining al fresco. When you’re not embarking on coastal walks, stroll over to the centre of Beadnell to spot fishing boats at the waterfront. This historic village leads onto Beadnell Bay, where visitors can go scuba diving, surfing and sailing – although you might want to wait until the warmer months. Look out for little tern, as a colony of national importance resides here, as do Arctic tern.

Pack up your buckets and spades for an easy, breezy family holiday by the sea with your four-legged friends in tow. This newly built home, set in a quiet spot of the postcard-pretty seaside village of Beadnell and just a short flip-flop from the beach, delivers all the goods.

Drop your bags off and head to Beadnell's golden sands (a 0.5-mile walk) for water sports action and sandcastle-making marathons. Then dive into one of the local pubs (one mile away) for a swift pint, hearty grub, and a warm welcome.

Fancy breaking things up with an afternoon at a swimming pool and spa? Then make use of the host's membership to The Ocean Club in nearby Seahouses. You can book in for a fitness class, treatments and a splash about the children's pool. And if the kids have any energy left, closer to home, you'll find a playground and grassed area for a runabout.

When it's finally time for a rest up, you'll love how fresh and inviting this home feels. Catch the last of the sun with barbecues in the garden. Or hunker down inside around the farmhouse-style dining table for family feasts before cosy film nights beside the fire.

Set in the grounds of a Grade II listed hall, this charming cottage is nestled in the heart of beautiful Beadnell, just a short walk from the sandy beach and pretty harbour. The local pub is just a two-minute stroll, while there are also an array of gorgeous coastal walks up through Seahouses, Bamburgh, Newton by the Sea, Embleton and Craster, which are easily reachable by car.

After a long walk on the beach, enjoy a cup of tea in the pretty courtyard garden and rest your feet. Or, if it's chilly, warm up next to the log burner on the modern chesterfield sofa in the stylish living space. We love the cool grey and sunny yellow colour scheme here. This place is perfect for family or friends.

Sitting within view of Bamburgh Castle and the Cheviots, this home is a peaceful getaway that is well and truly geared towards rest and relaxation.

On the ground floor alone, there's both a sun room with huge windows bringing in lots of natural light, as well as a cosy living room with a wood-burning stove around which to gather after a bracing walk in the elements. The large kitchen with a lovably retro serving hatch has a wealth of surface space for whipping up family-sized feasts, which can be enjoyed around the dining table.

This charming stone-built cottage in picturesque Northumberland is perfect for those looking for a peaceful getaway. With an idyllic setting with a balcony overlooking the sea – this holiday cottage is a great find – we love the stunning sea vistas. The kitchen/dining room has a door to a west-facing balcony too, great for sunsets. It is just a minute's walk from Seahouses' commercial hub with all of its shops, restaurants and bars. Or from the harbour, you can get a boat to the beautiful Farne Islands or make use of the Ocean Leisure Club (membership is included while staying at this home, but a small entrance fee applies).

Harbourside Hymn

Castaway and escape the outside world at this picture-perfect period cottage squirrelled away on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, just a few miles off the Northumberland coast. Cut off twice daily from the mainland with the fast-moving tides of the North Sea, the island has a truly magical feel. Spend your days spotting seals sunning themselves on the coastline or bobbing through the waters. Stretch your legs with bracing walks along the vast unspoilt sandy shores – Coves Haven beach on the northern side of Holy Island is gloriously secluded.
