For a traditional seaside holiday, you couldn't be much closer to the water's edge than this smart mews cottage. Set in the historic harbour area of the quaint North Northumberland coastal village of Seahouses, the beach is just a stone's throw away.

Inside, everywhere feels bright and breezy, just how we like our coastal homes to be. Kick off sandy shoes in the cloakroom and make your way into the dazzling white open-plan living space where soft blue accents unite the space and remind us the sea is never far away.

Guests love how spaced apart the bedrooms feel across two floors. Form an orderly queue for first dibs on that swoon-worthy bedroom with a separate dressing area and deep bath for an evening soak. Though that immaculate second king-sized bedroom with a Juliet balcony to steal a glimpse of the sea is an impressive consolation prize. And while there's no outdoor space to speak of, we don't think you'll mind with the harbour and beach so close.

When it's time for a dose of sea air, nip to the end of the road, and you can watch the boats bob into shore – made even more magical at sunset. Then take a mosey into the centre for a dose of British seaside nostalgia with fish and chips at the beach. Or hop on a boat trip and journey to Farne Islands – it's Attenborough's favourite place, don't you know.

However, the interiors are beautifully modern, tasteful and creative. We love the juxtaposition of rustic elements like the wood-burning stove and antique sideboard, with industrial-style lampshades and vibrant art prints on the walls. The skylights on the sloped ceilings bring in that seaside sunshine, but equally make a great spot for stargazing. The private patio is another great location for staring at the Milky Way – of course not before a fresh grill on the barbecue, followed by a few alfresco gin and tonics. Lying just around the corner from Seahouses Harbour, the stone facade of this home looks like it's been a fixture here for years, but it's a fairly recent addition. This becomes abundantly clear as you glance around the contemporarily styled interior for the first time.

Spread across a single floor, the colour palette of muted greys and whites is bright and inviting, while there's a wealth of surface space in the sleek kitchen for when you want to whip up seafood banquets. The designers haven't completely done away with rustic cosiness, though – what could be a cuter way of ending a productive day than gathering around the crackling flames by the living room's stove?

As already mentioned, the town's harbour is just a three-minute walk away and it's possible to head out on nautical expeditions, including diving and trips to the bird-spotting hotspot, Farne Islands. If you prefer to stay on land, there are walking routes and scenic points aplenty in the surrounding Northumberland Coast AONB, too.

Harbour Fantasies

With an idyllic setting with a balcony overlooking the sea – this holiday cottage is a great find – we love the stunning sea vistas. The kitchen/dining room has a door to a west-facing balcony too, great for sunsets. It is just a minute's walk from Seahouses' commercial hub with all of its shops, restaurants and bars. Or from the harbour, you can get a boat to the beautiful Farne Islands or make use of the Ocean Leisure Club (membership is included while staying at this home, but a small entrance fee applies).

Harbourside Hymn

This stone-built cottage is just over 300 metres from the seafront in the town of Seahouses. There are bars under 200 metres away too, or you can play some golf or go horse riding nearby. Beadnell Bay, only a few miles north, is great for sailing, windsurfing and scuba diving too. This home has sea views from the doorstep and access to a small patio area which is part of a communal courtyard shared with other neighbours. Inside, there’s a wood burner for cosy nights in, but at full capacity, there’s only one bathroom for five guests.

You can't beat this home's location. While restaurants, pubs, and Seahouses' picturesque harbour are a five-minute walk away, what we love most is that two miles of sandy beach sits just across the road. Inside, two cosy lounges offer space for both grown-ups and youngsters to unwind – one even has a collection of board games, DVDs, and an XBOX 360 for rainy days. Head outside and you'll find a sunny garden overlooking the Cheviot Hills – perfect for pups and kids to let loose. A ten-minute drive away is Bamburgh Castle, making this an ideal spot to explore the Northumberland Coast.

While the garden is slightly overlooked by the adjacent homes, we think it's a small price to pay for the south-facing lawn which is a suntrap. Entertainment awaits in the shape of books and games, though there's plenty to do outdoors, including watersports and golfing. Or how about sightseeing? Hop in the car and go three miles to Bamburgh Castle or five miles to Holy Island and Lindisfarne.

Spend your days going for long country or coastal walks, visit the nearby town of Bamburgh for its famous castle, or simply sit back in front of the wood-burning stove, read a book and enjoy each other’s company. Weather permitting, we also highly recommend spending some time in the private decking area. Wake up and enjoy your coffee in the morning sun, for example, or end the day with a glass of wine after being out and about all day.

This welcome, family home is a wonderful base for your coastal getaway. Nestled on a leafy street in the idyllic village of Newton-by-the-Sea, you’ll love exploring this gorgeous slice of the Northumberland Coast as much as enjoying this sociable base.

Newton-by-the-Sea is dotted with traditional cream-washed cottages, and this charming abode is no different. Inside, the classic yet contemporary interior makes a lovely home-from-home, with polished hardwood floors, bright walls, a gas-burning fireplace, and cosy furnishings. We love the soft blue and sandy tones, exuding comfort while drawing inspiration from the coastal location. And if that doesn’t get you embracing being beside the seaside, the cute beach-themed artwork will. 

Every space has been designed with sociable families in mind. It’s open and inviting, with a beautiful kitchen that’s perfect for gathering around the kitchen island, preparing meals together as a group. The conservatory is another bright and homely space. It’s particularly lovely in the mornings with the sunlight pouring in through the ceiling windows while you savour a nice, hot coffee. Or, you can take your coffee out to the patioed garden and breathe in the fresh seaside air.

With plenty of charm and a whole host of modern comforts, this recently refurbished farm building is a wonderful introduction to Northumberland. It's the perfect place to kick back and relax between your adventures in this rugged corner of England. 

The main living space, with its high ceilings and traditional wooden beams, is as cosy as it is grand. Light up the wood burner and flop down on the sofa with a glass of wine to watch a blockbuster after a busy day. When you get hungry, you can whip up your favourite hearty dishes in the kitchen – we recommend a classic Sunday roast. And, if the weather is warm, you can enjoy a tipple outside on the terrace, as you breathe in the fresh air and make some plans for your stay. 

History buffs are truly spoilt, with Alnwick Castle, Bamburg Castle, and Dunstanburgh Castle all within a short drive. Walkers and cyclists can pack a picnic and explore the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just a stone's throw away. And, if you fancy a day trip, you can drive down to Newcastle in around an hour, to immerse yourself in the lively city.

Bamburgh Beach and its seafront castle are just a short stroll away from this home. Days spent lounging on the sand are definitely a given, but, if you'd rather enjoy a laid-back afternoon at home, the garden is the perfect spot. A timber playset is available for children, a lawn is great for furry friends, and outdoor seating lets parents relax with a refreshing drink. We think the nautical-inspired interiors are lovely, too. The log burner keeps things cosy during the cooler months and the soaker bath is just what you need after a day exploring the Northumbrian coast. Leisure club membership is also included, although a small entry charge applies.

Modern and sophisticated, it's a perfectly practical choice for a few friends or a small family. There's a sociable flow to the place, with an open-plan living space and high-spec kitchen, and a cloakroom and utility room – handy for muddy boots. The bright, cheery decor continues upstairs with two en-suite bedrooms. 

And there's private outdoor space here too, so grab a chilled bottle of something and some glasses, and choose between your patio to the front or courtyard to the rear – where you'll also find a gate out onto the main street.

Situated right on the water in Northumberland, a few miles from Bamburgh, this home is a great place to stay if you’re looking to explore the North Sea Coast. Inside, you’ll find a stylish kitchen and living area, while outside, there’s a private garden, where you can spend time relaxing in the sun or dining al fresco. When you’re not embarking on coastal walks, stroll over to the centre of Beadnell to spot fishing boats at the waterfront. This historic village leads onto Beadnell Bay, where visitors can go scuba diving, surfing and sailing – although you might want to wait until the warmer months. Look out for little tern, as a colony of national importance resides here, as do Arctic tern.
