For a traditional seaside holiday, you couldn't be much closer to the water's edge than this smart mews cottage. Set in the historic harbour area of the quaint North Northumberland coastal village of Seahouses, the beach is just a stone's throw away.

Inside, everywhere feels bright and breezy, just how we like our coastal homes to be. Kick off sandy shoes in the cloakroom and make your way into the dazzling white open-plan living space where soft blue accents unite the space and remind us the sea is never far away.

Guests love how spaced apart the bedrooms feel across two floors. Form an orderly queue for first dibs on that swoon-worthy bedroom with a separate dressing area and deep bath for an evening soak. Though that immaculate second king-sized bedroom with a Juliet balcony to steal a glimpse of the sea is an impressive consolation prize. And while there's no outdoor space to speak of, we don't think you'll mind with the harbour and beach so close.

When it's time for a dose of sea air, nip to the end of the road, and you can watch the boats bob into shore – made even more magical at sunset. Then take a mosey into the centre for a dose of British seaside nostalgia with fish and chips at the beach. Or hop on a boat trip and journey to Farne Islands – it's Attenborough's favourite place, don't you know.

This stone-built cottage is just over 300 metres from the seafront in the town of Seahouses. There are bars under 200 metres away too, or you can play some golf or go horse riding nearby. Beadnell Bay, only a few miles north, is great for sailing, windsurfing and scuba diving too. This home has sea views from the doorstep and access to a small patio area which is part of a communal courtyard shared with other neighbours. Inside, there’s a wood burner for cosy nights in, but at full capacity, there’s only one bathroom for five guests.

Just an eleven-minute walk from the local harbour (from where you can take a boat trip out to spot puffins and lighthouses on the Farne Islands), this charming stone cottage is every bit the traditional, English home you’d expect. However, the interiors are beautifully modern, tasteful and creative. We love the juxtaposition of rustic elements like the wood-burning stove and antique sideboard, with industrial-style lampshades and vibrant art prints on the walls. The skylights on the sloped ceilings bring in that seaside sunshine, but equally make a great spot for stargazing. The private patio is another great location for staring at the Milky Way – of course not before a fresh grill on the barbecue, followed by a few alfresco gin and tonics. But if you'd rather venture out, there's a dog-friendly pub just over the road, while the centre of Seahouses with its array of shops, pubs and restaurants is just a five-minute walk from your front door.

You can't beat this home's location. While restaurants, pubs, and Seahouses' picturesque harbour are a five-minute walk away, what we love most is that two miles of sandy beach sits just across the road. Inside, two cosy lounges offer space for both grown-ups and youngsters to unwind – one even has a collection of board games, DVDs, and an XBOX 360 for rainy days. Head outside and you'll find a sunny garden overlooking the Cheviot Hills – perfect for pups and kids to let loose. A ten-minute drive away is Bamburgh Castle, making this an ideal spot to explore the Northumberland Coast.

Or from the harbour, you can get a boat to the beautiful Farne Islands or make use of the Ocean Leisure Club (membership is included while staying at this home, but a small entrance fee applies).

British coastal hideaways don't come much more sophisticated than this, folks. And locations don't get much better, either. Set in the quintessential seaside town of Seahouses, its setting is bang-on. Take a mosey into the centre (a mere 0.8 mile walk away) for a dose of British seaside nostalgia with fish and chips at the beach followed by a beachcombing amble. Treat the family to a game of crazy golf or rock pooling. Or hop on a boat trip and journey to Farne Islands – it's Attenborough's favourite place, don't you know.

Back home, the Scandi-inspired interiors of this chic home feel like a dose of fresh sea air after busy days on the beach. Marble accents and butter-soft leather armchairs add a dash of luxury, while abstract sea-inspired prints subtly remind us the sea is never far away. Over in the light-filled bedrooms, there are impeccably finished en suite shower rooms for a little added privacy. And the icing on the cake? Ideal for seaside romance, this cosy cottage is half a mile from Seahouses Beach and harbourside eateries. While the garden is slightly overlooked by the adjacent homes, we think it's a small price to pay for the south-facing lawn which is a suntrap. Entertainment awaits in the shape of books and games, though there's plenty to do outdoors, including watersports and golfing. Or how about sightseeing? Hop in the car and go three miles to Bamburgh Castle or five miles to Holy Island and Lindisfarne.

Bamburgh Beach and its seafront castle are just a short stroll away from this home. Days spent lounging on the sand are definitely a given, but, if you'd rather enjoy a laid-back afternoon at home, the garden is the perfect spot. A timber playset is available for children, a lawn is great for furry friends, and outdoor seating lets parents relax with a refreshing drink. We think the nautical-inspired interiors are lovely, too. The log burner keeps things cosy during the cooler months and the soaker bath is just what you need after a day exploring the Northumbrian coast. Bamburgh’s location on the Northumberland Coast makes it splendid for a trip out on the water, just as much as fish and chips on the shore. Between the dunes and the green perimeter of this tiny town, your house sits pretty at just over half a mile from Bamburgh Beach and its famed castle. But if you choose sea over the land, you’ll be well looked after – this town is home of Victorian maritime heroine Grace Darling.

While this fabulous holiday home is certainly on land, there are still nods to the coast. Grey wooden slats on the exterior are reminiscent of a traditional wooden rowboat, while the front door even features a perfectly round porthole. You can admire it from the outside while sitting on your patio with a chilled bottle of fizz, or on the lush lawn surrounded by a picnic and a few G&Ts. And there’s even more admiring to do inside.

We love the elegant interiors – a striking scene upon entering the lounge. White beams, dark hardwood floors, and Scandi-style furniture set a modern tone. But rustic tradition isn’t far away, with an Aga range cooker and log-burner taking you back to days of old. In all its glory, Bamburgh Castle is visible on the skyline just across the nearby farm buildings.

Bright, cosy bedrooms and two bathrooms provide plenty of space for a family or a few friends to share, and we love the ground floor bedroom with patio doors opening to the garden. 

A great spot for keen walkers and beach lovers, it's just a few minutes drive to the coast (the beach is 2 miles away) and even less to the castle itself. Set in a quiet farming hamlet, you'll have peace and quiet, as well as the local amenities, pubs and cafes just a few minutes away.

Stay in an elegant country house with this apartment near Beadnell Bay. It has all the character you’d expect such as tall shuttered windows, a handmade kitchen and a roaring open fire for when the weather turns colder. That's not to say it's without modern comforts – there's underfloor heating here to keep your toes toasty. The main highlight, we’d say though, is the fact that it’s just a ten-minute walk from the beach. Beadnell Bay's long stretch of sand is perfect for bucket-and-spade holidays, while the locale also boasts many coastal walks with stunning views of cliff-top ruins, including Dunstanburgh Castle.

Pack up your buckets and spades for an easy, breezy family holiday by the sea with your four-legged friends in tow. This newly built home, set in a quiet spot of the postcard-pretty seaside village of Beadnell and just a short flip-flop from the beach, delivers all the goods.

Drop your bags off and head to Beadnell's golden sands (a 0.5-mile walk) for water sports action and sandcastle-making marathons. Then dive into one of the local pubs (one mile away) for a swift pint, hearty grub, and a warm welcome.

Fancy breaking things up with an afternoon at a swimming pool and spa? Then make use of the host's membership to The Ocean Club in nearby Seahouses. You can book in for a fitness class, treatments and a splash about the children's pool. And if the kids have any energy left, closer to home, you'll find a playground and grassed area for a runabout.

The home itself is like the beach houses of New England, with an atrium-style glass front showing off that direct sea view. Stepping inside, you’ll find the cosy kitchen and dining room invite you into the space with a warm welcome. From here, the snug lounge opens up onto a private courtyard – this is a wonderful spot for a quiet morning coffee or later with evening drinks and magical barbecue meals under the stars. And when you’re ready to get warm and cosy, make your way inside to enjoy a long soak in the bath and a restful night's sleep in the relaxing bedrooms. 

Days can be spent trekking along the majestic coastal path towards Seahouses and Bamburgh Castle, pausing in atmospheric pubs and savouring fresh fish and chips whilst watching the waves dance on the shore.

With plenty of charm and a whole host of modern comforts, this recently refurbished farm building is a wonderful introduction to Northumberland. It's the perfect place to kick back and relax between your adventures in this rugged corner of England.

When you get hungry, you can whip up your favourite hearty dishes in the kitchen – we recommend a classic Sunday roast. And, if the weather is warm, you can enjoy a tipple outside on the terrace, as you breathe in the fresh air and make some plans for your stay. 

History buffs are truly spoilt, with Alnwick Castle, Bamburg Castle, and Dunstanburgh Castle all within a short drive. Walkers and cyclists can pack a picnic and explore the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just a stone's throw away. And, if you fancy a day trip, you can drive down to Newcastle in around an hour, to immerse yourself in the lively city. 

The Periwinkle

Sitting within view of Bamburgh Castle and the Cheviots, this home is a peaceful getaway that is well and truly geared towards rest and relaxation.

On the ground floor alone, there's both a sun room with huge windows bringing in lots of natural light, as well as a cosy living room with a wood-burning stove around which to gather after a bracing walk in the elements. The large kitchen with a lovably retro serving hatch has a wealth of surface space for whipping up family-sized feasts, which can be enjoyed around the dining table.

Alternatively, if the forecast makes for pleasant reading during your visit, it would be a crying shame not to make the most of the table that sits in the middle of the back garden's terrace – there's a barbecue present if you really want to embrace the alfresco way of life.

When it comes to seeing what lies beyond the home's boundaries, the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty starts at the end of the road and offers castles, beaches and walking routes aplenty. It also only takes just over ten minutes to reach Seahouses Harbour, from which you can catch a ferry to the Farne Islands.

A cosy escape to the countryside for a couple or a single traveller, Dorian Grey Cottage has everything you’ll need for a relaxing trip. Nestled into the village of Belford, you’ll be surrounded by rural farms and beautiful hills, perfect for idyllic walks. In fact, staying here means getting the best of both worlds as you are neatly tucked away between the Northumberland coastline and the beautiful wilderness of Northumberland National Park. Spend your days going for long country or coastal walks, visit the nearby town of Bamburgh for its famous castle, or simply sit back in front of the wood-burning stove, read a book and enjoy each other’s company. Weather permitting, we also highly recommend spending some time in the private decking area. Wake up and enjoy your coffee in the morning sun, for example, or end the day with a glass of wine after being out and about all day.

Send the blues packing with a stay at this picturesque home at the tip of Bamburgh village. With pops of nautical blues and white wooden beams, this home perfectly fits its coastal location while maintaining the feel of a countryside cottage. The mix of modern and traditional features create a quintessential setting for any activity whether it be cosying up in the barbecue hut for an outdoor feast or inside for a formal dinner, enjoying a game of pool or sneaking away to read a good book on the sunny conservatory. 

The four lofty bedrooms feature plush carpet and sloped ceilings and there’s a warming log burner in the lounge for the dogs to doze off in front of. When you’re not embarking on coastal walks, stroll over to the centre of Beadnell to spot fishing boats at the waterfront. Look out for little tern, as a colony of national importance resides here, as do Arctic tern.

Budle Bay has built a reputation as a bird sanctuary, so you might just spot birds like wildfowl and waders flying past. The home itself oozes a connection to the sea and the sandy bays that surround it – from the lush blues of the furnishings to the decorative touches.

Being located on the edge of historic Bamburgh, in the small village of Waren Mill, means you can enjoy long, quiet walks and energetic hikes through the countryside and along the coast here. A trip to Bamburgh Castle followed by a stroll along Bamburgh's sandy shores is a must. It takes five-minutes to drive here and you can easily while away hours marveling at the scenery. If you watched The Last Kingdom on Netflix, then you may just recognise the castle – it's pretty iconic to the storyline! Going slightly further afield, Northumbria National Park can be reached within thirty-minutes, and here you'll find beautiful walks amongst the lush countryside.

From quaint fishing villages to castles, follow the coastal path two miles up to Seahouses, or take a longer trip down to Alnmouth for fish and chips. And closer to home, less than a mile from Beadnell Bay Beach,  your apartment in this former Georgian hotel has seen the smiles on the faces of many guests over the years.
