Set in a former sweet shop, this country village home pays homage to its previous life with lemon wallpaper, pastel pink dressers, and bright furnishings. Perfect for a couple or small family, the house is set over several floors, with original oak beams running through rooms and the shop front windows now forming part of the living room. On sunny days, we love the roof terrace for alfresco glasses of wine, or curling up on the L-shaped sofa downstairs if the weather isn't playing ball. The separate kitchen has got all the equipment needed for cooking meals but we prefer sauntering over to Clays of Broseley, or walking to the Duke of York pub mere steps away. During the day, there are plenty of hiking routes and UNESCO world heritage site Ironbridge is less than a 5-minute drive.

This historical plot is an Elizabethan-era gatehouse that has been transformed into an extraordinary holiday home. Prepare to live it up like royalty under the home's original wooden ceiling beams and exposed-brick fireplaces, with a wooden-clad dining room ready to host your feasts. Bedrooms have been named after previous guests: the Margaret Thatcher Suite has a freestanding bath next to the four-poster bed, while Prince Rupert is a cuddlier space with ruby red tapestries lining the walls. This terraced house has been completely refurbished in a superbly modern fashion. Our favourite spot has to be the bright and airy open-plan living space. With its wonderful bi-folding doors, this clever design essentially removes the wall between your home and your south-facing courtyard garden (perfect for the unpredictable English weather). Mid-century furniture looks stylish in the lounge, while the roll-top tub up in the master en-suite brings a vintage edge to proceedings. For more on local history, take a stroll through town to reach Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery in just eighteen minutes. Another fantastic walk is along the River Severn. Your home is just three minutes from the riverbank, from where you can follow it all the way across the border to Wales. It’s definitely one for experienced hikers with a strong pair of boots though, at just over ten miles away.

This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa. Toast up those toes in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand – you'll feel all warm and homely in no time at all. Step outside of this 17th-century building and explore one of the loveliest market towns in England that's positively brimming with listed buildings, medieval castles and striking churches. Take a short twelve-minute walk up Corve Street to the town centre and explore this historic place for yourself.

This barn conversion in deepest Herefordshire is bursting with rural authenticity. Not only is the property located close to a peaceful nature reserve complete with lakes, but it's also been Grade-II listed to protect its historical importance. Just a few minutes walk from the High Street, you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to bars, restaurants and pubs nearby, and by day you can explore the town's pretty Regency streets, award-winning parks and independent shopping scene.

Enjoy a romantic stay at this handsome barn conversion, lying at the end of a track, on a family-run arable farm, surrounded by fields – this is a sublime retreat. Relax with a glass of bubbly in the private hot tub with its idyllic views through the farm to the fields beyond (your lovely hosts provide bathrobes and slippers), then savour a barbecue lunch in the sun. It's also the perfect spot to do a bit of stargazing when the night skies are clear and full of sparkling diamonds. Beautiful bi-fold doors provide plenty of light inside this single-level barn, which was once a grain store. We love the gorgeous stone floor and exposed wooden roof beams framing the high ceiling. A fresh colour scheme of pale cream, yellows and greys complement the rustic yet stylish design. If you can tear yourself away from this love nest, there's plenty to explore. Go for a walk to the historic riverside village of Bidford-on-Avon, sixteen minutes on foot, where you'll find an array of charming pubs, restaurants, shops, and a picturesque church built in 1250. Or visit Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon, around a twenty-five-minute drive, while stunning Warwick Castle is a few minutes more in the car. The magnificent Cotswolds are on your doorstep too – Hidcote Manor Garden, near Chipping Campden, just over a fifteen-minute ride, which has one of Britain's most influential Arts and Crafts gardens.

If you ever feel the need to just get away from it all and clear your head for a couple of days, this converted barn at the foothills of the Malvern Hills could be just the ticket. Neighbours are few and far between in these parts, which means that sitting out on the home's outside deck is a perfectly peaceful experience. And given that there's a wood-fired hot tub and a separate wood-burner, this can be done even if the weather gets a little chilly. If it gets too bad, there's another wood-burner inside which you can curl up next to with a good book. As you might imagine, there's no shortage of walking routes to take in the surrounding Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with possible stops along the way including an iron age hill fort, an old quarry and a country pub or two.

Located on the southeastern edge of the gorgeous Peak District National Park, this stunning ten-bed Georgian mansion is secluded away within an acre of immaculately presented private gardens. In fact, the gardens are noteworthy enough to have had an entire episode of BBC's Gardener's World devoted to them.

The home packs in plenty of charm from the moment you enter its grand entrance hall, with eye-catching colourful tiles, an imposing fireplace and elegant antiques. It's a similar story throughout the rest of the ground floor, with the addition of wood panelling in the reading room, large bay windows overlooking the garden in the drawing room, and plenty of light and space beneath the beautiful vaulted ceiling in the kitchen. Built a few years ago, this beautiful conversion may still bear some resemblance to a barn with its stone clad facade, but that’s where the similarities end. Inside you’ll find simple, clean lines and, apart from a few pops of colour, a fairly neutral colour palette. Stylish, and clearly modern, the home’s crowning glory is the wide expanse of green that can be admired from the front door. Stare out over the beautiful dips and peaks as you take your seat at the wrought-iron table outside and nurse your first cup of coffee of the day. 

Breakfast can also be enjoyed out here if you prefer, although the wood dining table in the living space is elegant, and with its position right next to a window, you don’t entirely lose sight of the scenic views on offer. 

With a real focus on reconnecting you with nature, most of the ground floor rooms open up to let the fresh country air in – take a nap on the cushy bed with the doors ajar and wake up refreshed. 

Walk the grounds or watch the little ones run around on the lawn whilst you enjoy a glass of wine in a sun lounger. This is also a great spot for sunsets, but before that, you can drive out and explore the rural Welsh beauty of this area, you might want to stop off at the Rhug Estate Farm Shop and drive-thru, about six minutes away, to refuel before perhaps enjoy two splendid nearby reservoir walks: Brenig and Alwyn

Architecturally designed, the fact that it’s rounder than your average house not only makes this place unique, but it offers incredible views from almost anywhere inside the home. You can, of course, also slide open the door that separates the lounge from the outdoor patio and let some of that Derbyshire goodness drift in on the breeze. Forget about time as you amble around, heading to the compact kitchen for a cup of freshly-brewed coffee before sinking into the sofa without a care in the world, the sounds of mother nature a welcome lullaby. 

With board games on offer, you might take to the living room floor for a game or two in front of the crackling fire, but you’ll most likely want to spend most of your time outside. Kids have ample space to run around whilst you supervise from the garden chair with a glass of wine. Barbecue as often as possible or wander the grounds in search of the perfect picnic spot. 

The heated indoor swimming pool is yours for half of the day – make the most of it by playing shoulder wars or marco polo in the clear blue waters. With many walking routes, you’ll be able to see as much of the surroundings as possible, and all at your own pace. Try the Woodside to Chatsworth circular so you can stop off at Chatsworth Stables for a coffee. 

Explore the Peak District, visit the historic Haddon hall, and see the waterfalls – golfing enthusiasts might also want to visit the Bakewell course a short drive away.

When the weather permits, it's easy to pass hours out in the open air thanks to the seating on the covered terrace and the barbecue ready and waiting for summer feasts. You're also spoilt for choice when it comes to nearby locations for bracing rambles, as the home sits on the edge of the Shropshire Hills AONB. Stokesay Castle is five minutes' drive down the road, while the charming country town of Church Stretton is ten minutes in the other direction.
