This home was once a hayloft in a former life — the original circular window on the front is so shaped for pitching hay through — but today it's a perfectly cosy space for a rural getaway. Despite this functional heritage, you can safely banish any thoughts of cramped living quarters. Set within the grounds of a Grade II listed Georgian house, you’ll be welcomed by peaceful gardens and a wonderful sense of character. It’s worth noting there are steep stairs leading up to the main floor and the garden is shared with the owners, but there are plenty of quiet spots to discover and you will have access to a private hot tub (with views overlooking the orchard). Found in the middle of five hundred acres of woodland and farmland in Middle England, this home in a former stable block and servants quarter has all the necessary ingredients for a truly restorative rural getaway. Once a humble farm building back in the past, this home is now a Grade-II listed home surrounded by three acres of grounds and orchards in rural Cheshire.

Despite this sense of heritage, the interior is more contemporary in style, with stark white walls, a smart grey kitchen and a whirlpool tub in one of the bathrooms. Of course, it wouldn't feel like a real country getaway without a log-burner and there's one ready and waiting for chilly evenings in the living room.

If you're visiting during the warmer months, however, there's a private patio complete with a gas barbecue, as well as plenty of quiet spots out among the grounds. The hosts really make the most of this outdoor space and are happy to share their homemade produce — be it cider, apple juice or fresh eggs from the chickens that also call the address home.

It's fair to say that the home's location is isolated, but there are plenty of distractions if you look hard enough. Cyclists and walkers are fond of Bickerton Hill, which lies ten minutes' drive away, while the historic town of Chester only takes half an hour to reach in the car.

Built a few years ago, this beautiful conversion may still bear some resemblance to a barn with its stone clad facade, but that’s where the similarities end. Inside you’ll find simple, clean lines and, apart from a few pops of colour, a fairly neutral colour palette. Stylish, and clearly modern, the home’s crowning glory is the wide expanse of green that can be admired from the front door. Stare out over the beautiful dips and peaks as you take your seat at the wrought-iron table outside and nurse your first cup of coffee of the day. 

Breakfast can also be enjoyed out here if you prefer, although the wood dining table in the living space is elegant, and with its position right next to a window, you don’t entirely lose sight of the scenic views on offer. 

With a real focus on reconnecting you with nature, most of the ground floor rooms open up to let the fresh country air in – take a nap on the cushy bed with the doors ajar and wake up refreshed. 

Walk the grounds or watch the little ones run around on the lawn whilst you enjoy a glass of wine in a sun lounger. This is also a great spot for sunsets, but before that, you can drive out and explore the rural Welsh beauty of this area, you might want to stop off at the Rhug Estate Farm Shop and drive-thru, about six minutes away, to refuel before perhaps enjoy two splendid nearby reservoir walks: Brenig and Alwyn

We're happy to say that the home's living quarters are just as romantic, with wooden walls, floors and ceilings lending the feel of an Alpine ski chalet, and the fireplace only adding to this sense of cosiness. When the weather permits, it's easy to pass hours out in the open air thanks to the seating on the covered terrace and the barbecue ready and waiting for summer feasts. You're also spoilt for choice when it comes to nearby locations for bracing rambles, as the home sits on the edge of the Shropshire Hills AONB. Stokesay Castle is five minutes' drive down the road, while the charming country town of Church Stretton is ten minutes in the other direction.

After looking around this home, you probably wouldn't guess that the property has been standing for more than a quarter of a millennium, but that's a testament to the care and attention that has gone into the renovation.

With 5 acres at your disposal, this rustic cottage in the Peak District is the ideal escape for anyone looking to indulge in a slice of rural peace. Not so rural, however, that you can’t easily nip into the Georgian gem that is Ashbourne. Explore the local coffee shops and markets whilst you’re there by strolling the cobbled streets and admiring the architecture. The award-winning Callow Hall is five minutes away, and Thor’s Cave – one of the beautiful hiking trails of the area – can be found at the other end of a twenty-minute drive. 

But we bet we had you at rural peace, didn’t we? You’d be right to embrace it and there’s no better way than soaking up all that quiet from your position on the sunlounger. In the summer months, you can ward off the heat by slipping into the beautifully clear, private pool. Autumn and spring would best be spent strolling the large garden – you might even pack a basket and thermos for an impromptu picnic when you find a spot that you’re particularly drawn to. 

Select one of the books in the library and curl up with it on the leather sofa, only getting up to top off your coffee. Evenings can be spent watching a movie in front of the crackling fire or by playing board games – just as long as you don’t forget the cocoa. If it’s not too nippy out yet, you might also find an alfresco meal at sunset to be one of your favourite moments of the day.

Dating back to the 19th century, this barn in the White Peak area of the Peak District has ben given a new lease of life in recent years. No longer used for farmyard storage, it's now a country getaway full of luxurious touches.

Save for the sections of exposed stonework, you wouldn't be able to guess this home's true age. The design is contemporary but definitely rustic in flavour, with bare floorboards, artfully weathered wooden furnishings and a Scandinavian-style wood-burning stove that's the ideal companion to return to after a long bout in the great outdoors. The svelte rolltop bathtub upstairs is another way to get toasty and warm, too.

As you can probably guess from looking out through the glass doors to bucolic views of rolling countryside, you're not short of walking routes and picturesque scenic points in the immediate locale. This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa. Toast up those toes in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand – you'll feel all warm and homely in no time at all. Step outside of this 17th-century building and explore one of the loveliest market towns in England that's positively brimming with listed buildings, medieval castles and striking churches. Take a short twelve-minute walk up Corve Street to the town centre and explore this historic place for yourself.

Fit for a romantic country break, this classic stone cottage sits in the rolling hills near Huddersfield. A ten-minute drive sees you in the confines of the Peak District – the UK’s oldest National Park – where walking trails weave across the landscape atop hills and past waterfalls. Ten minutes in the other direction, you’ll find the quaint town of Holmfirth to stock up on groceries and visit the local pubs and cafés. There’s a local pub and bakery a fifteen-minute stroll into the hamlet of Hepworth too.

After a day trekking in the Peaks, this is the perfect spot to put your feet up. Unlace your hiking boots and warm your toes by the wood-burning stove in the living room. ‘Cosy’ is the watchword here, with old wooden gables on display and thick stone walls keeping things warm once the stove gets going. There’s a little selection of holiday reads for evenings by the fire and a full kitchen for meals at home. In the sunny summer months, make use of the patio, furnished with a bistro table for two. From here, the only sound is the odd bleet from sheep in the field next door.

Tucked away in the countryside surrounding Shrewsbury, this lovely cabin makes for an idyllic getaway for two. It can be found on the banks of River Perry, on the border between Wales and England. It’s set in grounds that also boast woodlands and access to the river, in a gloriously quiet spot amid beautiful countryside. 

There are excellent hikes to be enjoyed right from your doorstep, and it only takes forty-eight minutes to drive to the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where you can get up close to some pretty spectacular scenery. History buffs might want to visit Shrewsbury Castle, which is twenty-seven minutes away by car. There are pubs within a five-minute drive of the cabin, so after a day of the Great Outdoors you can sink back into a comfy chair by a roaring fire and enjoy a local pint. 

Of course, you might want to set up camp here in the cabin and not leave the grounds – it would be perfectly understandable. The tranquil private woodland creates a soothing backdrop for doing absolutely nothing. You might sit on the balcony and get stuck into a good book, or stroll along the river looking for ducks to feed. Perhaps you’ll fire up the barbecue in the late afternoon, ready for a relaxing evening in the cabin. When the sun starts to set, you’ll want to slip into the hot tub. Sip glasses of bubbly while soaking away your troubles, and look forward to being woken up by birdsong in the morning.

Spend your days exploring the area – the city of Ludlow is only a short ten-minute drive away and boasts a castle and charming market, and there are plenty of hiking trails through the hills to add to the itinerary. When you arrive back home, run a bath fed from the local spring and put together a meal in the sociable kitchen. There's even a private cobbled courtyard to sit out in on warm evenings. If you're lucky, you'll catch sight of the swifts and swallows that nest in the area.
