Add into the mix, gig sash windows, high ceilings, and the central (yet surprisingly peaceful) location – and you've got yourself a pristine base from which to explore the picturesque city of Bath. Stroll just seven minutes to visit the historic Roman baths and explore the high street boutiques, cafes and restaurants that surround it. There's no need to drive or even use public transport here, as most of the city is within reach of a convenient walk from your apartment.

This delightful townhouse in the centre of Bath is the perfect place to base your stay in the historic city. You’ll find yourself within walking distance of the main high street, as well as a fifteen-minute stroll from the famous Abbey and Roman Baths. The home itself is tucked down a pedestrianised thoroughfare, where cafes, restaurants and boutiques all vie for your attention. If you’d perfect to flex your culinary skills, you can make the most of your fully equipped, marble-topped kitchen, and feast together around the classically styled dining table. We loved the way High & Dry blends historic charm and modern comfort. Features like the exposed stone fireplace preserve the history of the home, while the well-thought-out decor brings it up to date. Each room has a slightly different colour scheme and a slightly different atmosphere. Being tucked away on a side street, it’s a quiet, tranquil spot, but it’s still central – so you can still easily explore Bath on foot. The generous kitchen and dining area and the various communal spaces make it a great fit for families.

This magnificent Georgian home is steeped in history and filled with eighteenth-century glamour, from the antique sideboard to the cast-iron fireplace. Set on the first floor, this storey was often referred to by architects of the time as the 'Piano Nobile', since it was the part of the building that had the highest ceilings and tallest windows. Best of all, these glorious sash windows look out over picturesque views of the Royal Crescent and Royal Victoria Park, so you'll get to admire one of Bath's most iconic sights from the comfort of your own home. When you're ready to explore the city, it takes about fifteen minutes on foot to reach the famous Roman Baths, as well as a range of modern spas should you fancy trying it for yourself.

Even before you enter, it’s clear that there’s something special about Faerie World. The high position of the cottage gives a heavenly view of the stream below, and you can hear the babbling water from the terrace, which is itself surrounded by flowers, and makes you feel like you’re in a fairytale. Once inside, the living room and bedroom don’t disappoint. The bedroom in particular, with its Farrow & Ball colours, stands out. The kitchen doesn’t have the same aesthetic charm, but that’s a small gripe, and shouldn't give you any cause for concern.

Classy. That's the word that springs to mind when we think of this recently refurbished apartment on Milsom Street in Bath. As soon as you walk through the elegant gated entrance with carved granite and mosaic tiling, you know you're in for a treat. The home is immaculately clean, polished and designed to a high standard. A raft of celebrity portraits taken by the owner lines the walls – a wonderful personal touch. Select a bottle from the wine cooler and relax in the spacious living room, which has a sense of occasion with its Charles Eames leather lounge chair and velvet sofa. This light, west-facing room has two large original sash windows with views over the courtyard and chimney pots. We were surprised by how peaceful this place is inside, considering it's located on one of Bath's main shopping streets. It really is an excellent base for exploring the city's centre and sights. There are lots of luxury and high-end boutiques, as well as restaurants and bars right on your doorstep, where you can enjoy a cocktail or relish a delicious lunch (The Botanist and Ivy Brasserie are opposite). For a day of pampering, Thermae Bath Spa is a five-minute walk, or explore Bath's jaw-dropping UNESCO World Heritage architecture, such as the Royal Crescent, a ten-minute stroll away. A great find – it's no wonder this home has impeccable reviews.

This beautiful period home is right in the heart of historic Bath – in fact, Jane Austen lived in the terrace opposite from 1804-1805. You can definitely sense that period grandeur inside, with impressively high ceilings, marble fireplaces and gorgeous sash windows looking straight out onto Green Park. Each room feels light-filled and cosy – curl up on the plush sofa with a good book on rainy days (we recommend anything by Jane Austen to really set the mood), settle down for a light meal at the table and watch the world go by from the window, or nod off after a busy day in the sumptuous bedroom. And there's plenty to do right on your doorstep, with shops, restaurants, markets, museums and the Theatre Royal all within walking distance. Green Park Station around the corner hosts a Saturday morning farmers' market which is well worth a visit, and the must-see Roman Baths are just a quick seven-minute stroll away.

Fitzwilliam

You’ll feel like royalty when you stay in this plush one-bed, and that’s not just thanks to the regal setting, on the Circus (formerly King’s Circus) – one of the city’s most famous Georgian terraces. Or the grandeur of the decor, all immaculate plush carpets, high ceilings and original fireplaces. It’s also the fact that the hosts treat their guests like kings. Welcome packs include wine, biscuits and chocolate; check in and bag storage are flexible; chefs, massages, dry cleaning and babysitters can all be arranged; they even created their own online app to guide guests to local food and drink options. Luckily for those who don’t want to cook (although there is a kitchen), there are dozens of the latter nearby. We recommend taking time to make the most of the West Country dining scene, as well as checking out museums, the nearby Theatre Royal, and the famous spa. After all that, you can return to take a rainfall shower, loll by the fire, and snooze in the comfy sleigh bed. No wonder the tourist board awarded this place a gold star. We'd give it one too. 

Mighty Mauve

This charming maisonette sits amid a quaint row of terraced stone buildings in the heart of Bath. It’s between the Royal Crescent and The Circus, only a ten-minute walk to Bath Abbey, the Roman Baths, and the Pump Room. You can look forward to period features in this delightful home, which boasts a tranquil garden room with its original fireplace. There’s also a courtyard garden with a table and chairs, perfect for an alfresco lunch in the sunshine.

Wonderfully peaceful thanks to its private entrance away from the main street and its proximity to Henrietta Park (a one-minute walk), there’s a calm serenity to this boutique Georgian home. You can tell that it’s been worked on by an award-winning architectural firm and that your hosts, Silvia and Sohrab, have created something truly special here – the upstairs living area is full of original features (like the fireplace and arched windows) while the decor is contemporary and chic. Make yourself comfortable on the sofa as you people-watch with a glass of wine, or catch up on work at the cosy desk space – better yet, peruse the tourist leaflets provided and plan the next day’s activities. Descend the bespoke Italian staircase and you’ll find yourself in the sleek kitchen where your hosts have provided a continental breakfast. Enjoy your pastries and cereal in the glass-framed dining room or outside in the private garden while you catch some rays. When it comes to relaxation, your hosts have gone above and beyond by dressing the luxury beds in Egyptian cotton sheets (there’s even a pillow selection between soft or medium-firm) and they’re more than happy to arrange a spa day for you at the nearby five-star hotel. When you’re not soaking up the refined atmosphere of your classy pad, go out and explore your surroundings. Cross Pulteney Bridge over the Avon (a three-minute walk), see where Vanity Fair was filmed at Laura Place Fountain (a two-minute walk) visit Bath Abbey (a seven-minute walk) and stroll around the Royal Crescent (a fifteen-minute walk). Factor in the countless restaurants and shops on your front step and you’ve got everything you need for a blissful Bath stay.

More luxe additions include a boiling water tap in the kitchen, the bathroom’s freestanding tub and Egyptian cotton bedding. What’s more, you’ve got access to a beautiful communal garden –  a reminder of the former orchard here tended by the Abbey’s Benedictine brethren.

Blessed with Georgian townscape views, why not stay in the former home of a 19th-century British Prime Minister? It's clear that this listed townhouse retains its stately character, boasting antique furnishings, inviting bedrooms, and bright bathrooms. While the three-storey layout with lots of stairs to climb won't work for everybody, there's so much space to spread out after touring the city. Lucky for you, the central location puts Bath's most-loved landmarks a fifteen-minute stroll away, plus restaurants and transport links nearby.

It’s situated just behind the Assembly Rooms, close to the Royal Crescent and the Roman Baths – there’s no need for a car here. This home is a great base for a luxurious city break, with its chandelier and velvet furniture. You’ll have everything you need here, with plenty of restaurants, cafes, and independent shops nearby if you don't fancy cooking in the chic kitchen.

The Assembly

This meticulously furnished, bright flat in the heart of Bath is a treat for anyone who doesn't want to compromise on quality just to get a more central location. We fell in love with the open-plan living area, which features a gorgeous dining bar in the midst of gentle pastel hues and tastefully distressed dressers and end tables. Upon testing the sofas we found that they are wonderfully comfortable. The bedroom is no less impressive — it's quiet and bright, just like the rest of the flat. Overlooking Queen’s Park, you'll find many independent cafes, shops, and restaurants on your doorstep, and both Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths are within a five-minute walk. 

Baldwin's View

Behind the walls of one of Bath's characterful townhouses lives this striking apartment – a mishmash of original Georgian stone and chic, modern interiors. This is a place where past meets present, where traditional lattice windows meet inventive light fixtures, and a smart TV is framed by eighteenth-century brickwork. While the home has double-glazing to keep the noise at bay, sensitive sleepers may wish to pack earplugs nonetheless with the abbey’s bells nearby. Contemporary decor and metro-tiled baths are nice touches here, and though the kitchen is on the small side, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants, bars and shops all around you. 


Lady Daphne

With a glimpse of the Abbey from one window and a peek of the Roman Baths from the other, boltholes in Bath don't get much more central than this. Perched on the top floor of a Georgian townhouse, you'll need to climb a fair amount of stairs to get to this apartment. But with knockout vistas of the city's skyline as your reward, we don't think you'll mind. While the chimes of the Abbey's bells are utterly charming, they might not suit guests looking for marathon lie-ins. Although, with the city at your feet, we suspect you'll be up and at 'em anyway.
