This statuesque townhouse on the Suffolk coast is the perfect retort to the idea that beach-themed decor is kitschy and overdone. Artistic prints of shells and sea life adorn the walls, with nautical blues and whites providing a base for the contemporary furnishings – this home is seaside chic at its most sophisticated. It’s spread out over three floors so there’s plenty of space to socialise and with a self-contained garden flat, the layout works well for two families or a group of friends who would appreciate some privacy as well. 

The first floor offers large French doors leading out to a magnificent standing balcony overlooking Aldeburgh Beach, the boating lake and the sea, while the space is kept cosy and comfortable with squishy sofas, armchairs and an animal print rug. Elsewhere, stripped pine floors, grey tones and elegant decor make up the bedrooms and there's a modern kitchen for the keen chefs of the group. But our favourite spot has to be out in the shaded courtyard, with a nice cup of coffee and a good book. 

Outside, the big draw of this home is that it's right by the shore, meaning paddling in the sea and midnight strolls are just a few steps away. The rest of Aldeburgh is right on your doorstep, with trendy bars and boutiques rubbing shoulders with traditional fish and chip shops and quaint English pubs.

Sitting quietly on the Aldeburgh seafront lies this charming cottage. Just off your doorstep, you’ll find the coastal path that will take you down to Aldeburgh Beach and into the village, where you’ll find fish and chip shops, independent galleries and vintage shops. Hire a boat and spend the day on the mere before heading back to your comfortable base. This cottage is perfectly suited to a small family or couple seeking extra space, especially if you’re bringing furry friends with you. There’s a south-facing front garden for sipping your morning coffees, or why not end the evening with a glass of local cider?

Decked out in soft creams and crisp whites, this fisherman's cottage in Aldeburgh is a haven by the sea. A small group of friends or a family will be enchanted by the vintage decor, with wrought iron beds, lanterns and statement mirrors. We couldn't help but be charmed by the seaside-inspired pieces – think seashells, weathered white woods and photos of the coast on the walls. During the day, there's no doubt you'll be out exploring, but come nightfall, light the fire and curl up in the living room with a great book or enjoy a delicious family dinner around the table. With Sky TV, a DVD player and a collection of board games, you'll have plenty to keep you occupied during a relaxed night at home – and the snacks are sorted, thanks to the welcome hamper filled with local goodies like coffees, ales teas and crisps. But the location is best of all. You're moments from the beach, just off Aldeburgh High Street. Meander over to the sand and shingle coast as you nibble on the town's famous fish and chips. Culture fans will be enthralled by the lively scene in Aldeburgh, with its world-renowned annual music festival, galleries and antique shops to be found at every turn. Meanwhile, outdoorsy types can explore the Suffolk Heaths, dog in tow – Captain's Wood Nature Reserve is just a twenty-minute drive away.

This red-brick home is in one of the best locations in Aldeburgh, set on the shingle beach. So you can pop to the seaside, take a dip in the water and nip back for forgotten towels or sunscreen in a jiffy. Aldeburgh town is to the back of the home and it's a short stroll to ice cream parlours, delis, and restaurants. We love exploring the area by whatever means: from hiring a boat to meander the broads to hiking through the numerous nature reserves on the lookout for birdlife. 

Built in 1854, the house has large bay windows on its top floor lounge, with an alcove seat to watch the North Sea waves crashing onto the beach. There are a couple of nice furniture touches – the Chinese dresser and old-fashioned rocking chair, for example. And the pine-clad kitchen has everything you need for self-catering. Bedrooms are spacious and those Georgian windows mean a natural alarm clock of sunlight streaming in.

This quirky cottage is nestled right by the Suffolk seaside in the pretty town of Aldeburgh. Cosy and homely, it's the perfect base for a family trip to the coast. Part of a former village hall and theatre, this stunning space is vast, to say the least. It's a sizeable chunk of one of the landmark mock Tudor buildings in Thorpeness, recently converted to a handful of homes. 

The main living area was where village plays and dances were once held, so it's just waiting to be filled with family fun and the sound of laughter. With an open kitchen area, big dining table and cosy sofas, it's built for socialising. Down some stairs, but all with windows and plenty of light, you'll find enough bedrooms to keep even large families happy. But if you're looking for the kids, they're more likely to be hanging out on the mezzanine at the top of the house. Furnished with bean bags, it's a great den for gaming. 

If you can motivate the crew to leave the house together, Thorpeness Beach is just a five-minute walk away, along with the boating lake, the golf course and a range of shops and cafes. Or explore Aldeburgh, once home to composer Benjamin Britten, a five-minute drive away.

Pack a picnic and hire out one of the rowing boats – it’s the perfect way to while away an afternoon. In a secluded spot down a private road, but just a stroll from the pretty village of Orford, it's perfect for large family groups who love the great outdoors. A swimming pool, tennis court and a whopping five acres of grounds to explore make it your own private outdoor playground. There's even a great crabbing spot just on your doorstep. Inside, relaxing tones of white, grey and blue match the views outside. The first-floor living space has a great, sociable flow to it, with panoramic views and doors out to a balcony, while the modern kitchen is fully kitted-out for cooking at home. Bedrooms are smart, spacious and supremely comfortable, with the top-floor bedroom boasting a huge private balcony. With farmland to the front and the owner’s beautiful private nature reserve behind – this gorgeous home, part of a cluster of mill buildings, is in an idyllic spot. 

Take a stroll through winding footpaths of the reserve that meander through meadows and forests of giant cedars and ancient oaks. In spring, you’ll see enchanting carpets of bluebells, primroses and daffodils, but whatever time of year you come, you’ll be treated to an array of wildlife, from chaffinches to woodpeckers. There are maps to find the footpaths going onwards to Snape Maltings, just over two miles away, and to the sea at Aldeburgh (or it’s seven minutes in the car). You can borrow some bikes too if you prefer to cycle.

You don’t have to go anywhere to get some fresh air, though. There’s a lovely old cobbled, sunny courtyard where clematis and wisteria clamber up the walls – it’s the perfect spot to enjoy the welcome hamper of breakfast goodies. There’s another patio area, too, with fragrant rambling roses – ideal for a glass of wine.

The home itself is a sympathetic conversion of a stable and grain store. We adore the character features inside, such as the traditional 17th Century Suffolk white brick flooring, wood-panelled walls and old oak floorboards. Part of the original manger has been incorporated into the wall dividing the kitchen and the living space area – a lovely touch. Open the stable doors here and listen to the blackbirds singing at dusk. Furnished with antiques, this cottage will appeal to couples and pet owners looking for a luxurious country bolthole.

Step back in time at this meticulously restored Regency cottage. Your hosts have poured their time and energy into sourcing period-specific reclaimed materials and equipping the home with antique furnishings to create a cosy and charming English escape that offers the very best of coast and country.

All that effort has clearly paid off, as evidenced by the beautiful interior. From the Victorian roll-top bath to the eighteenth-century range and the wainscotting on the walls – every effort has been made to make it feel as authentic as possible. Even the mod cons, such as the TV, are hidden away inside bread ovens that are built into the chimney so as not to shatter the illusion.

At the top of the narrow staircase is the twin bedroom, through which you enter the main bedroom – a pretty common arrangement for houses of this period.

Step outside, and you'll find a beautifully maintained nature reserve right on your doorstep. Your hosts bought it in 2015 and have spent the intervening years slowly restoring and exposing its beauty, with winding footpaths leading to conveniently placed benches, soaring Scots pine trees and ancient oaks – perfect for a reflective moment in nature or a ride on the supplied bikes.

For adventures further afield, you'll find maps detailing footpaths that run to the world-class concert hall at Snape Maltings, two-and-a-half miles away, and continue through forests and past lakes, leading all the way to the sea at Aldeburgh. 

The Miller's Cottage

A new home built in keeping with traditional local architecture, this delightful timber cottage overlooks acres of farmland. Set on a quiet country road, it's replaced a former farm outbuilding and takes in uninterrupted views across the fields. 

Designed to be as roomy and modern inside as it is characterful outside, you'll have a bright, open home over two floors. With all-white walls and wood floors, there's a crisp, contemporary look to everything, with comfy, practical furnishings. A well-kitted-out kitchen is open-plan to the dining area and sofas, while two walls of floor-to-ceiling windows feature patio doors out to the covered terrace. And we love the large bedroom upstairs, with its pretty views and iron bed.

Dog-friendly, you can head off for walkies each morning or jump in the car and drive to nearby Orford Ness or Aldeburgh. Walk or cycle to the heart of Orford in less than half an hour, take in a music event at Snape Maltings or cycle to the nearest pub for lunch – it's all within easy reach.

Set in the tiny riverside village of Snape, this characterful cottage is like a fairy-tale setting come to life – but with better wifi. In the charming streets close by, you’ll find cosy pubs for a swift pint and hearty grub and village shops for browsing. Or head for Snape Maltings on the River Alde (ten minutes on foot), where you’ll find a myriad of boutiques, galleries, cafes, restaurants, a farmers market, and grand performance spaces – it’s the location for the renowned Aldeburgh music festival. And let’s not forget the coast. Make the morning of it and walk the picturesque six-mile path along the Alde estuary to Aldeburgh’s coastline, or jump in the car, and you’ll be there in nine minutes flat. But there’s plenty to do without ever leaving the property; lounge on the grass in the spacious, landscaped garden before firing up the barbecue, or dive into a good book in front of the wood-burning stove. We’re big fans of the light-filled extension at the rear of the home, which floods the dining room, hall, and contemporary kitchen with natural light. It’s a wonderful spot to gather the troops over lazy breakfasts as you hatch plans for your next adventure in Suffolk.

Positioned in the picturesque village of Knodishall, only a few miles from the Suffolk coast, there's plenty to keep active families occupied – the communal grounds have a tennis court and assortment of garden games, while inside, you'll find a cosy wood-burning stove for relaxed nights at home. The interior exudes an atmosphere of Scandi cool – think sleek sofas, bright living spaces and skylights in the bedrooms so you can fall asleep under the stars. Our favourite spot is the lovely patio, the perfect spot to savour a morning coffee or unwind with a glass of wine on summer evenings.

A short stroll will take you to the local pub in Knodishall, ideal for nights when you don't fancy cooking. Or venture a little further to discover Aldeburgh's brilliant boutiques, pebble beach, colourful huts and tasty ice cream parlour – just a ten-minute drive away.

You couldn't dream up a better location for this home in the smart seaside village of Thorpeness. Set just a five-minute stroll from the charming boating lake and vast stretches of coastline, you've got the best of the seaside resort at your feet.
 
Discover all of its charms with a stay at this home commanding the entire end of the iconic Ogilvie Hall – one of the village's many Tudor-style buildings built in the 1920s. Inside, a galleried living space drenched in natural daylight brings all the wow factor – as does the dining area, perched upstairs on a mezzanine to make the most of the views through the oak and glass balustrade. 
 
Friends or family getting together will appreciate how spaced out the home feels, with the bedrooms and three bathrooms placed apart over the four storeys to give everyone a little extra privacy. Meanwhile, kids will love the novelty of the secondary TV den room, which doubles as a study – the perfect spot to crash out with a movie after days at the beach. 
 
When it's time to up and at 'em, visit the historical Meare, where you can paddle, sunbathe, or hire a boat to explore the Peter Pan-inspired islands. The Suffolk Coast and Heaths is one of only forty-six areas given the title ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. And when your home is located in the award-winning region itself, it’s easy to see why. This cottage is one of six converted barns dotted around a central courtyard in the lush, Suffolk countryside. The farmyard sounds may be gone (although there’s still a working livery onsite), but the rural charm remains. While the home is kitted out for 21st-century living, we love the original features of the former barn – exposed brickwork and thick timber beams remind you of its rustic roots. The livestock certainly must have lived in style, as you’ll find a spacious open-plan living area with understated elegance. Neutral tones create a calming vibe, but another relaxed spot is the private patio where you can sip your morning Earl Grey. Take a wander out into the fields, where you’ll find uninterrupted views across acres of farmland towards Tunstall Forest. The village of Iken is a thirteen-minute stroll from home, or hop in the car for the same amount of time to reach Aldeburgh – grab a portion of fish and chips and make the most of its shingle beach.

Edge of the Estuary

We can see why this cottage was in The Sunday Times' Coolest 100 Cottages' list – it's a Jacobean dream, full of original character and quirky features. Once home to the miller of Plomesgate Mill, it now houses wonderful antiques, such as a fantastic 1700s Breton bed built straight into the wall, a gorgeous oak four-poster and a working 1800s kitchen range. 

Enjoy a tasty full English breakfast (courtesy of the welcome hamper provided by your lovely hosts Beverley and Martin) in the farmhouse style kitchen. Or when the Suffolk sun is shining, dine in the pretty, wisteria clad courtyard. If you’re lucky enough to be here in August and September, there's a mulberry bush in the grounds that guests are welcome to pick fruit from – perfect for making some jam or muffins.

Something else we adore here is the owner’s beautiful private nature reserve behind this home. Take the dogs for a walk through the meandering footpaths that wind through meadows and ancient woodland. In spring, you’ll see captivating carpets of cheerful daffodils, bluebells and primroses. Whatever time of year you come, though, you’ll be treated to an array of wildlife, from nuthatches to woodpeckers.

This elegant, recently built home is set in the heart of Thorpeness, just a two-minute walk from the beach. Typical black wood clads the exterior while inside, neutral shades, light wood and touches of soft blue echo the tranquil coastal location and make it easy to instantly feel relaxed and at home. A wood-burning stove wood-clad walls and pine furniture creates a modern farmhouse feel, just what we want from a countryside retreat. 

Bi-fold doors lead from the large dining room and kitchen to the enclosed garden. This spot is lovely for summertime drinks under the sun, courtesy of the wrought-iron dining set on the patio. At the bottom of the garden you’ll find a shaded spot with chairs beneath a wooden pergola, surrounded by greenery. 

The village itself is famous for its 1920s mock Tudor houses and 'Meare' - a manmade lake with boats of every colour, perfect for exploring its Peter Pan-inspired islands. The beach is a mix of shingle and sand and you can walk along it to the pretty town of Aldeburgh where you’ll find some of the best fish and chips in the world.

Head out to explore Friston village, where you can appreciate long walks with your loved ones, followed by a hearty plate of food from the local pub. Visit the beautiful coastline in Aldeburgh town – unwind on the sand as you listen to the ocean waves.

This home is ideally located to make the most of Suffolk's unspoilt coastline. Just a hop, skip and a jump down the road is beautiful Aldeburgh (eight minutes in the car), with its pebble beach and famous fish and chip shops. It's the same distance to Thorpeness, with its Peter Pan-inspired boating lake and magical House in the Clouds. If sandy shores are more your thing, Walberswick, under a thirty-minute drive, is the spot to visit. When you feel peckish, there's a pub with a good restaurant just 200 yards away.

With all of this exploring keeping you busy, you'll be glad to return to the comforts of home. Head through the bi-fold doors to the garden for a glass of wine as the sun sets, or cosy up around the log burning stove on chillier days. There's plenty of room on the two large sofas to accommodate the whole gang. This is a home for all seasons and perfect for a family or group of friends who want to be close to many of this county's top attractions.

There are plenty of footpaths nearby and lots of local wildlife to be discovered, so be sure to pack your binoculars. The pretty village of Orford is a twenty-minute walk away, home to restaurants, pubs and the unique polygonal tower of Orford Castle. If you fancy swapping rolling pastures for sand and sea, it’s only a twenty-minute drive to the pretty coastal town of Aldeburgh.

Nestled away in the Suffolk countryside, this apartment lies on an address that has been mentioned in historical records dating back to the fourteenth century. However, it's far from rustic inside. Wooden floors, a sleek white kitchen and pristine bathrooms with brick-style tiling make for a contemporary interior. During the colder months of the year, there's nothing better to do than curl up next to the log-burner in the living room, but when the weather is more agreeable, there's so much to do. Just outside, there's a private patio with a barbecue and seating ready for an alfresco feast. Elsewhere on the grounds, there's a tennis court shared only between a couple of cottages, as well as lots of wildlife to spot, from Muscovy ducks and moorhens to deer and pigs. Closer to home, the centre of Wickham Market is 50 yards away, where you’ll find a range of shops including a butchers, antique store and beauty salon, as well as an arts centre. There are a couple of restaurants here as well as a fish n’ chips shop, while there are many pubs nearby, including one in the village of Ufford, a one to two-hour walk from the cottage (or a four-minute drive). Your lovely hosts provide bikes for free, too, if you want to explore the area on two wheels.

This puts the raw beauty of the Heaths in one direction, and the bakeries, shops and pubs of Orford a five-minute walk away in the other. From here you can access the River Alde and the wildlife-filled marshes of Orford Ness nature reserve. There’s something Viking-like about the exterior of the old barn, in darkwood cladding. And indeed, this site has ties with the Vikings and Roman, with records as far back as the 14th century mentioning the barn. Inside you’ll find a modern haven with charming touches.
