Set in a quiet back street in the bustling market town of Woodbridge, this Regency-style house is a total haven for families. Cosy and inviting, both lounges have books, board games and DVDs to entertain everyone on rainy days – the second lounge also has a Wii. The kitchen is a particular highlight, with a traditional Aga cooker and plenty of space for lazy breakfasts at the long table. A lift makes it easy to transport luggage to the welcoming bedrooms on the first floor, and the pretty private garden is the ideal spot to play a game of croquet, badminton or swingball. Fire up the barbecue on summer evenings for alfresco meals, then challenge someone to a round of table football in the shed. In terms of location, you're just metres away from several wonderful old pubs, independent cafes and local shops, not to mention within walking distance of the River Deben. This pretty 16th Century cottage is full of character and light. Relax on the large enclosed courtyard with its beautiful blossom tree and flower baskets – it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of rosé wine. At night the tree is lit up with twinkling lights giving the space a magical feel.

If it gets a bit chilly, head inside and sit next to the large inglenook fireplace with its cosy wood-burning stove. We love this room with its historic beams and antiques. If you don’t fancy eating out, rustle up a dinner using some local fresh seafood from the fisherman’s huts at Aldeburgh, a twenty-minute drive away.

Closer to home, the centre of Wickham Market is 50 yards away, where you’ll find a range of shops including a butchers, antique store and beauty salon, as well as an arts centre. There are a couple of restaurants here as well as a fish n’ chips shop, while there are many pubs nearby, including one in the village of Ufford, a one to two-hour walk from the cottage (or a four-minute drive). Your lovely hosts provide bikes for free, too, if you want to explore the area on two wheels.

Just outside the village of Little Bentley, a five-minute walk from the local pub and a ten-minute drive from Colchester, this rustic barn is nestled on a working farm. Previously a popular children's café with fun play areas both indoors and out, it's an ancient barn that retains a great deal of rustic charm. 

Quirky and imaginative, it's a family home with an emphasis on keeping the little ones entertained (and safe – it's fully child-proofed). The huge living space is dominated at one end by a log burner, with aged leather sofas and throws perfect for cosying up on winter nights, while the other end features a super cool, Scandi-style kitchen – complete with a professional café coffee machine that's been left in situ so you can play barista. Fun things about this room include the chalkboard wall, a movie projector for film nights and an indoor hammock chair.  

One of the bedrooms is aimed at kids, with twin beds, funky lights, chalkboards, toys and books. But as if that wasn't enough, they have a whole play area in the main space, where imaginations can run wild thanks to a wooden teepee, a wooden shop and a range of homemade superhero capes to choose from. There's more outside with a willow tunnel and mud kitchen. As the sun sets, toast some marshmallows around the fire pit before heading to your cosy beds.

This one-of-a-kind barn conversion definitely has the wow factor. With an ancient shell, but an interior straight out of a contemporary design magazine, it’s no wonder it was featured in the Times’ Best Holiday Houses for Groups in Britain in 2018. The heart of the home is the enormous open-plan living area, with its soaring ceilings and wall of glass. We can imagine some really special meals here. There are six bedrooms, most of which have splendid views over rolling fields, and the hot tub in the lower ground bedroom is a real touch. Pour a glass of something cold and relax on the patio while the younger guests run wild in the large garden (just over an acre) or a stroll into the village. Chelsworth is basically an open-air history museum, with wattle and daub houses that are mostly unchanged since the 17th Century, and a country pub for that delicious post-walk pint.

The Old Barn

In the historic market town of Hadleigh, this Tudor cottage makes for the perfect romantic bolthole. Days can be filled with riverside walks and cycles along the old railway line out into the countryside (your host provides bicycles). The town centre is just a few minutes walk and has cafés, pubs and shops to keep you going.

Heading back to this cottage after a day in the outdoors is a delight, especially once you get the stove going in the living room. Low ceilings with old, timber beams keep things snug and cosy and there’s a little library of books should you wish to take things back to analogue. You can still feel the 1600s in the beams on display in the bedroom too. If it’s a sunny day, head out to the patio and fire up the barbecue (perhaps with some herbs from the herb garden) or just enjoy an evening tipple in the peace of the countryside.

From here, there’s easy access to walking trails through Dedham Vale (just a twenty-minute drive away), as well as local amenities in Boxford and Kersey – both a short drive away.

But the steep and narrow internal stairs won't suit everyone. Beyond the Suffolk Heaths, the shore is a fifteen-minute drive. And while there's no free parking available here, you'll find public car parks a half-mile away.

This 1828 home is living proof of reincarnation. Originally a Wesleyan Meeting House, this building has also housed a corset factory and a furniture bonding warehouse. Now, it’s a central and cool base from which to explore Woodbridge, tucked away on one of the prettiest and quietest streets of the market town. While the home maintains its industrial roots, the vibe has been transformed into something more contemporary, reminiscent of a New York style loft apartment that’s utterly different from the typical homes here. We love the exposed brick, intricate metalwork and huge skylight that brings light into the open-concept living area, where you’ll find plenty of plush seating options, especially around the wood burner. There’s also a separate snug area where younger members of the family can set up camp while you finish up work at the desk space. The bedrooms are ultra cosy, prioritising comfort and rest above all else, and when it’s time to explore, you’ll be in a historic town on the River Deben, with a popular marina, ancient buildings and a picturesque church. There are many specialist shops, art galleries and restaurants to keep you entertained. Plus, you’ll be right near the Suffolk Coast & Heaths AONB, with tonnes of gorgeous roaming landscape to hike and cycle through.  

The Old Corset Factory

If you step out onto the balcony of this home, you'll hear the unmistakable sound of halyard ropes gently jangling against masts in the breeze. You're right beside Woodbridge's picturesque quay, so it's a great spot, not only to watch the boats go by but also to drop by the cafes, pubs, and restaurants within walking distance. Of course, there's plenty to do in Woodbridge itself, including its unmissable weekly Thursday market, while the trip wouldn't be complete without a walk along the River Deben. But if you brought a car, even better – there's lots to explore further afield. Head to Aldeburgh for the freshest fish and chips, or visit the wonderful twelfth-century castle in Framlingham – both within a half-hour drive. On a clear day, you can even make out the ancient burial mounds at Sutton Hoo. After exploring the area, we'd recommend heading over the road to The Anchor for a pint – grab yourself a table under the magnolia tree and watch the world go by.

Created by an award-winning visual artist, these converted grain silos caught our eye for a number of reasons. There’s the industrial exterior which made us question how cosy it would be, but once inside it’s everything you’d expect from a charming rural retreat. You can admire beautiful views across the Suffolk countryside or be inspired by the artwork whilst sitting by the log-burning fire. Outside, you’ll find a little table and barbecue, plus there’s a wonderful sense of privacy and seclusion here. It’s also just a short drive from the pretty market town of Framlingham, with plenty of walking trails within easy reach.

Artist’s Residency 

Nestled in the tiny village of Kersey, this magnificent timber-framed house has been lovingly restored to its former glory, allowing you to experience the authentic Suffolk countryside. Inside you'll find a roaring log burner, beautiful beamed rooms, and original features that give this home a cosy atmosphere and an air of rustic charm. 

Start your days with a home-cooked breakfast made in the classic country kitchen, then take one of the bikes from the shed and head off to explore the pretty lanes around the village. Boasting close proximity to the unspoiled Suffolk countryside, there are plenty of walks to enjoy with the dogs, as well as an array of quaint villages, such as the famous Lavenham, which is known as England’s best preserved Medieval Village. Ruggedly rural and untouched by city life, this is the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle and connect with nature for a few days.
