This is before you've even entered the home, as well. Out on the decked terrace, there's a hot tub from which you can enjoy the tranquillity of the local area, as well as a sofa and swing seat. When the sun goes down, there are festoon lights to turn on, plus a charcoal barbecue and fire pit to keep you fed and warm.

If the temperature dips a little too low, there's a wood-burning fireplace inside the home, as well as plenty of cosy blankets and board games. Inside, the design is rustic in places, as with the weathered wood dining table, but the sleek black kitchen and stylish bedrooms are nothing but modern.

A gorgeous period cottage on the banks of the millstream, this home puts you in the heart of the picturesque English coastal village of Bosham. It’s incredibly quiet here, with barely any sound other than the burbling of the stream and the quacking of ducks. And as it’s a smartly converted community hall dating back to the 19th century, it combines the charms of yesterday with the comforts of today. At night, enjoy the home cinema set up complete with a popcorn machine, Shiatsu massage cushions and treats from the welcome hamper. In the mornings, sit on your patio directly on the stream and enjoy morning cappucinos. Then walk to the end of the lane and you’re at the water’s edge where you’ll find gorgeous views of the estuary – make sure you come back for sunset over the waterfront quay. For biking, walking and nature enthusiasts, the South Downs National Park is a fifteen-minute drive away and the Wittering Beaches are under a half-hour’s drive. Plus, if you’re looking for a little more action, the market town of Chichester is only 10-minutes by car from your tranquil home on the stream.

If you want to get out and explore the area you’ll find a pleasing mix of rural walking routes in the surrounding hills, and the quaint coffee shops, local pubs and shops of Bosham village a fifteen-minute walk away. The centre of Chichester is just a ten-minute drive away too.

Sandwiched between the South Downs National Park and the Chichester Harbour AONB, it doesn’t get more away-from-it-all country glam than this little Sussex nook. It’s on the edge of a wildlife meadow, so sessions on the private terrace come with the soundtrack of birdsong and a gentle summer breeze. Spot wildlife from the warmth of the private hot tub on the deck, or perhaps from the swing seat, strung up on the porch. 

The interior is a reflection of the wilderness location, with wooden artworks featuring fawns and birdlife on display in the cosy bedrooms. The window seat in the master makes for the perfect reading nook, overlooking the meadow, and there’s a desk in here should you need to work remotely. The vaulted, wood-beam ceiling is twisted with stringed lights for a fairytale effect and there’s plenty of room at the rustic wooden table for the group to dine inside (if you’re not enjoying an alfresco meal on the terrace, that is). Come evening time, the plush sofas in the living room are set around a wood-burning stove.

It's perfect for a family – not only will kids have their own room filled with books and toys, but the playhouse in the garden is sure to be a favourite. While they're playing pretend, parents can kick back and relax at the picnic table, enjoying a refreshing drink and free-flowing conversation as the stars pop out overhead. 

During the summer, fling open the patio doors and effortlessly transition between the sunny garden and the sleek living area. Inspired by the coastal setting, the design features deep blues, crisp whites and lots of natural elements – we're particularly fond of the three-piece octopus print hanging near the sofa. When the weather is chilly, the log-burner will keep things nice and toasty as you wind down with a glass of wine and a Netflix movie.

When you're ready to venture out, it's about ten minutes on foot to Bosham village, where you'll find a waterfront pub, cafe and a few shops. The walks along the harbour are excellent, but most of the action lies in Chichester's historic city centre, a seventeen-minute drive away. For a day at the beach, West Wittering's Blue Flag Beach is a must-visit – it's about half an hour away by car.

Civilisation (of the quaint and quiet variety) is a stone’s throw away too with the village of Bosham a fifteen-minute walk. Here you’ll find a train station, grocery shops, country pubs and cosy coffee shops. After a day in the hills and fells, a bubbling circular hot tub awaits beneath stringed lights in the back garden. In the summer months, light the charcoal grill and enjoy an outdoor feast on the deck. In the cooler months, it’s time to get the wood-burner going in the lounge, crack out the board games and gather for a meal at the rustic, country-style dining table. Plush leather sofas provide a spot to put your feet up and bedrooms make the most of the tranquil location, overlooking the estate’s hay meadow for a peaceful night’s sleep.

Dating back to the regency period, you'll first notice the bright green wrought iron details and curved walls from the outside, and a grassy lawn that makes the perfect spot for a picnic on a sunny afternoon – jug of Pimms optional. Inside, the living room is decked out in soothing, neutral tones while the kitchen cabinets are a punchy emerald shade. However, the standout feature of this house has to be the magnificent orangery. Just as beautiful in the morning light as it is after dark, this glass room has a long table where you can gather for relaxed breakfasts and formal sit-down dinners. If you'd rather someone else did the cooking during your trip, then there are several options in Emsworth, from cosy pubs to cute cafés. Plus, you'll love strolling down to Emsworth Harbour to watch the boats bobbing in the water – and, if you're feeling brave, there's always the option to try out some water-sports too.

Though small, this bright garden annexe in Bosham is perfect for solo nomads and couples looking for a romantic coastal break. With a double sofa bed facing the wall-to-wall bi-fold doors, you can wake up to a green view of the shared garden. The kitchen, although not the biggest, has a coffee maker and everything you need for light bites to enjoy alfresco on the terrace. A short drive from Aldwick Beach, Portsmouth and Waterlooville Golf Club, there's a little something for everyone here.

Whether you’re in search of a solo retreat, a romantic escape or a family adventure, this simple little cottage invites you to make it your own. Nestled within the heart of the South Downs, it lies adjacent to the host’s home but with plenty of space to ensure total privacy. There’s an outdoor area by the fields where you can barbecue, and it’s just a short stroll to the nearest pubs. You’ll also find beautiful hiking and cycle trails straight from the door, while the Sussex beaches and Chichester Harbour are within easy driving distance. While the interiors are somewhat dated in style, there’s a cosy living room for playing board games after a coastal walk and a handy home office when work beckons. Your host occasionally stays at the cottage next door, but you’ll have complete privacy and garden access during your stay. Your host provides complimentary essentials for you here, though it’s only a short drive from the closest store – plus, there’s parking here for three cars on the driveway.

This is the kind of place we'd recommend for a longer stay, just because we feel that a one-week booking will barely let you scrape the surface of all it has to offer. The insides are designed for a large family to play, relax, and adventure together, especially as the house is well-equipped with cooking supplies, DVDs, and games. But of course, the real highlight of this house is its beautiful natural surroundings – the mudflats outside offer a unique opportunity for wildlife fanatics and birdwatchers to get their wellies on and reconnect with nature. We love how the whole house is designed with the awareness of the natural beauty just outside, and every room has a stunning view that keeps inviting you to go outdoors. The living space benefits from large picture windows, an intricate fireplace and nautical furnishings that make it as homely as it is bright. Speaking of, the luminous conservatory is a light and airy space to enjoy group meals together while keeping one eye out for the lesser spotted red-breasted merganser. Better still, start your day in the calm fresh air – there's a lovely patio and garden area to enjoy your morning coffee from, complete with an outdoor dining table and chairs. When you're ready to explore the nearby towns, we recommend that you start with Chichester's Cathedrals, then take a twenty-minute drive to West Wittering beach for a day trip. If there are Peppa Pig fans in your party, then a visit to Peppa Pig World at Paulton's Park is also a must. While others may enjoy mooching around the picturesque village of Bosham next door – a six-minute drive. There's so much to see and do here, although we wouldn't blame you for spending most of your time languorously birdwatching, playing games and enjoying the scenic waterfront surroundings at home.

This address might look effortlessly stylish on the surface, but look a little closer and you'll find that all the home comforts are present and correct. In the living room, for instance, there's a log-burner that you can get crackling while you loll about on the plush sofas facing the warmth. Up in the master bedroom — itself painted in a sultry tone of navy blue — there's an eye-catching copper bathtub that will have you scheduling a long uninterrupted soak into your itinerary. The rest of the house is dotted with house plants — especially in the light and airy kitchen-dining room — but if you want a bit more horticulture, head out into the private patio space, which is lined with flourishing beds and potted foliage. There's plenty of seating out here for taking full advantage of bursts of unseasonable weather, as well as a barbecue in case you're truly lucky. Even better is the fact that Chichester's main landmarks are within such easy walking distance. The Cathedral takes five minutes to reach, as does the town's castle.

A working clock takes pride of place on the home’s old facade, surrounded by white cladding and red brick. The walled garden out front welcomes you with an alfresco dining area – perfect for a summer cocktail or two – and a patio bursting with flora and illuminated with strings of lights at sundown. Stepping inside, the living room is made cosy with a wood-burning stove and you can choose between the plush leather or soft velvet sofa to lounge away the evening. It’s the quirky touches that really grabbed us though – brass pineapple lampstands and gnarled wooden beams on display in the bedroom. You’re in the heart of old Chichester here, a ten-minute walk to the 12th-century cathedral and amongst shambling streets with coffee shops, pubs and restaurants a-plenty. If exploring the outdoors is more your scene, the South Downs National Park is a five-minute drive, and the wild-life filled trails of Chichester Harbour AONB is a ten-minute drive.

This Grade II-listed home is located just outside the city walls of Chichester, only a five-minute walk from shops, restaurants, cafes and the Cathedral. You’ll certainly want for nothing here – there’s a selection of paperbacks in the sitting room to keep you occupied on rainy days, a fully equipped kitchen for when you decide to dine in and a courtyard garden with outside seating. Should you need to work remotely, there’s a desk in the top floor bedroom, though the wi-fi can be a little temperamental up there, so you may want to bring a personal hotspot device.

Only a short stroll from West Wittering Beach, this home provides the perfect base for exploring the West Sussex coast. We love the cosy, seaside-inspired design – think white-washed panelling, wicker furniture, and a cute window seat where you can curl up with a book. Family-style feasts can be rustled up with ease in the kitchen, while the patio is a great place to enjoy an alfresco digestif. As the bunk bed is only suitable for little ones, it's a better fit for families. Factor in the quick drive to Chichester and the proximity to the sea, and it's no wonder it caught our eye.

Well, there's no mystery why this home has made our collection. The apartment is right on the beach in East Wittering, so as you can see, it has great views of the sea from the private sunny balcony as well as most rooms. Yes, the galley kitchen is a bit compact if there are more than two people in there, but it's modern and well-equipped. If you tire of East Wittering Beach (unlikely we know), West Wittering Beach, with its views of Chichester, is less than a ten-minute drive. Otherwise, Chichester Marina is just over ten minutes away in the car, and Goodwood House is around a thirty-minute ride.

If location is at the top of your list when searching for places to stay in Chichester, look no further than this central three-storey home. Shops, cafes and restaurants are no more than a minute’s walk away, and the train station is reached in around ten minutes by foot. If you fancy a trip to the coast, it’s a twenty-minute drive to Aldwick Beach. The home is modern and well-appointed – there’s plenty of storage space and a full kitchen, making longer breaks a breeze. Just so you know, the staircases are curved, which may be a problem for those with mobility issues.
