We love the old-world touches, like the cast iron heaters, sparkling chandeliers and ornate vintage mirrors. Escaping from the hustle and bustle of the big city is a no-brainer here. Throw open your windows in the morning, and you’ll hear birdsong – you might even see a passing deer or two. Whip up a quick breakfast in the fully equipped kitchen, and then put on your walking shoes. Miles of open countryside await right on your doorstep – the cottage is at the end of a drive where the village gives way to the natural world. You can spend entire days hiking the patchwork of fields and farms crisscrossed by a web of brooks. You’ll quickly work up an appetite after all that exploring. You can grab a meal in the village pub, the local chippy or the Tandoori restaurant. However, if you want more variety, a five-minute drive will take you to nearby Ramsbottom, where you'll have a much wider choice of cafes, restaurants, and food shops. We're pretty sure that you won't find many cottages cuter than this. Built at the backend of the eighteenth century, this traditional weaver's house is Grade-II listed and you can see why. Inside, the wooden ceiling beams, exposed brickwork and stable door are full of rustic charm, while a log-burning fire and antique furnishings add an extra level of cosiness. To the side of the home, there's a patio area complete with alfresco seating where you can enjoy a coffee and the surrounding tranquillity of West Yorkshire. Fans of Last of the Summer Wine — one of the longest-running sitcoms in the world — will love walking around the local town of Holmfirth where it was filmed. The Peak District is only a ten-minute drive away too if you're in the mood for a long ramble.

A ten-minute drive sees you in the confines of the Peak District – the UK’s oldest National Park – where walking trails weave across the landscape atop hills and past waterfalls. Dating back to the 1700s, the cottage was originally built as a two-storey barn for the main house which your host Rachael’s parents bought as a ruin in the 1960s. Recently restored, you can tell how much love and care has been put into this stunning space that blends beautiful modern comforts with characterful original details to create an unforgettable home. From the underfloor heating to the wood-burning stove, romantic roll-top tub and sweeping views of the Peak District fields and valleys, there’s a storybook warmth and cosiness here that instantly makes you feel welcome. With two outdoor terraces, you can enjoy your breakfast alfresco while the horses roam around you, or fire up the barbecue for a dinner under the stars. Factor in the DVDs, books and board games on hand and there’s plenty to keep you entertained on rainy days – but with so much nature to explore, we recommend grabbing your wellies and venturing out into the great outdoors. After looking around this home, you probably wouldn't guess that the property has been standing for more than a quarter of a millennium, but that's a testament to the care and attention that has gone into the renovation.

Aside from the odd exposed stone wall and the original fireplace, the interior is as contemporary as they come, but great importance is placed on cosiness, too. Underfloor heating and a wood-burner will get you warmed up once again after bracing country walks, while the huge kitchen has plenty of space for whipping up hearty feasts. If the weather's playing ball, you can even eat outside, which will give you an opportunity to admire the bucolic scenery.

As well as this private patio and barbecue, there's a shared fire pit on the grounds around which to gather once darkness falls. Guests also get access to a shared games room, which has tables for ping-pong and pool, board games and toys, as well as a small shop selling meat from the surrounding farm and locally produced artisanal products.

Sitting deep within the Peak District, you're certainly not short of walking routes in the local area, plus a couple of historic attractions — Magpie Mine is only a ten-minute walk, for instance. And what would a rural getaway be without a charming pub? You'll probably be happy to hear that the closest one is only eight minutes away on foot.

This Grade-II listed Georgian townhouse in the historic Cheshire town of Congleton doesn't shortchange guests when it comes to rooms. As well as the generously sized bedrooms, there are also three separate living rooms and kitchens, many with log-burning fireplaces or — in the case of one — an Aga stove to keep your toes warm. As well as there being no shortage of space to socialise in the traditionally appointed interior, the home also benefits from two garden spaces, one with a hot tub large enough to accommodate eight guests on a warm summer's evening. If it's too cold to be frolicking about outside, there are plenty of chic bars and restaurants in the locale, some even on the street on which the house sits. However, rural outings are just as easy, too — the outer boundary of the Peak District can be reached in twelve minutes in the car, while Biddulph Grange Garden only takes eight.

Dating back to the 19th century, this barn in the White Peak area of the Peak District has ben given a new lease of life in recent years. No longer used for farmyard storage, it's now a country getaway full of luxurious touches.

Save for the sections of exposed stonework, you wouldn't be able to guess this home's true age. The design is contemporary but definitely rustic in flavour, with bare floorboards, artfully weathered wooden furnishings and a Scandinavian-style wood-burning stove that's the ideal companion to return to after a long bout in the great outdoors. The svelte rolltop bathtub upstairs is another way to get toasty and warm, too.

As you can probably guess from looking out through the glass doors to bucolic views of rolling countryside, you're not short of walking routes and picturesque scenic points in the immediate locale. From the peace and quiet of the street, you’d never guess you were just a two-minute walk from Chester’s historic centre. Almost all the town's biggest sights are within walking distance in fact – you’re minutes from Grosvenor Park, the River Dee, Chester Racecourse, and the Roman Amphitheatre. Built in the 19th century, the house has been fully renovated and has a bright, fresh feel to it that is instantly welcoming. Decorated in refreshing whites, there are bright splashes of orange, green, and yellow to greet you in the morning. This old stone home offers an escape to the country like no other. Set on acres and acres of private land, the estate here is dedicated to rewilding. Instead of topiaried hedges and regimented flowerbeds you’ll find wildflower meadows, wild moorland and forests alive with wildlife. Here, days can be spent cycling and hiking the woodland trails straight from your doorstep, wild swimming and climbing up to a Bronze Age cairn. There’s a wellness centre on the estate too for some real R&R.

The home itself combines a Scandi-chic vibe with touches of the 19th century. Stone fireplaces and wooden-beamed ceilings sit alongside sleek, modern kitchen cabinets and plush sofas in sitting rooms. Our favourite spot has to be the dedicated playroom, or “kid’s cave” where bunting and hand-written notes cover the walls and there’s a big activity table to keep little hands occupied for hours. The view from the classic old windows is something to savour too – out over rewilded pastures and rolling hills for miles.

With the Peak District on your doorstep, you won't run out of activities to fill up your day. Hike the Monsal trail or plan a visit to Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall – there's something for everyone.

Accessed by a single-track road (not suitable for low cars), you’ll be welcomed by cosy rooms and a wonderful sense of seclusion. There is also a wood-burning stove, a private rear garden and flexible sleeping arrangements – the zip-and-link bed can be arranged as a double or two single beds on request. Guests can enjoy multi-entrance tickets to the House and Gardens, as well as access to the estate gym, tennis court and swimming pool for an additional fee.

Overlooking the clear waters of a deep lake that's famous for its scuba diving and open water swimming, this charming home is a real find. Built on the edge of the former quarry, it's one of only a handful of lodge-style homes in this exclusive spot. It's bound to appeal to lovers of the great outdoors, with walking and cycling routes nearby, and it's just a stone's throw from the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. It's set in a private lane, and while we love the stylish, modern interiors, we couldn't get enough of the lake views from the terrace. With a private hot tub to sink into and a fire pit, it's the perfect spot as the sun sets. Inside, there's a contemporary fireplace and a huge TV, so getting cosy shouldn't be a problem, and we love the sociable, open-plan layout. You can cook in the fabulous kitchen and eat at the dining table – perhaps with the bi-fold doors open. Here you'll be just a twenty-five-minute drive from Lancaster and Morecombe, with the little village of Over Kellet just down the road. It's just fifteen minutes by car to the vast beaches of nearby Morecombe Bay.

Outside of your home, the ancient ruins of Clitheroe Castle are a three-minute walk away, while the Forest of Bowland is a five-minute drive (or just under forty minutes away on foot). As is common with properties from the era, there are high ceilings and tall sash windows, which have the cumulative effect of making the interior bright and inviting. The kitchens are both large, well-equipped and have been given a sleek finish, and there's even a wood-burner in one of the living rooms for the colder months. If the weather's being kind, a patio with bistro-style seating awaits just outside the back door and there are plenty of rural attractions in the local area, too. Pendle Hill and the adjoining sculpture trail can be reached in five minutes in the car, while in the opposite direction, the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty gives you plenty of rambling routes.

Set in extensive grounds but with its own garden, this is one magnificent place to stay in North Yorkshire. Thoughtfully designed by the owners who have put their personal stamp on the stunning interiors, there's plenty of space for groups to socialise – both indoors and out. The high-end kitchen is perfectly equipped for cooking family feasts, plus there's a smaller on the other side of that house that's perfect for whipping up a quick snack. Each bedroom is unique and they all come with spectacular bathrooms, ideal for relaxing after long walks or getting ready for a slap-up meal in town. You'd be forgiven for thinking you're in the middle of the countryside but here you'll be just a short walk away from the city of Ripon, with its endless places to eat, drink and shop. And being right on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales means keen walkers and cyclists will love it here too.

Located on the southeastern edge of the gorgeous Peak District National Park, this stunning ten-bed Georgian mansion is secluded away within an acre of immaculately presented private gardens. With terraced lawns, cute courtyard spaces and a Big Green Egg barbecue, the ornate outdoor areas are perfectly set up for alfresco dining. In fact, the gardens are noteworthy enough to have had an entire episode of BBC's Gardener's World devoted to them.

The home packs in plenty of charm from the moment you enter its grand entrance hall, with eye-catching colourful tiles, an imposing fireplace and elegant antiques. It's a similar story throughout the rest of the ground floor, with the addition of wood panelling in the reading room, large bay windows overlooking the garden in the drawing room, and plenty of light and space beneath the beautiful vaulted ceiling in the kitchen. Here, a large pine table sits up to ten adults or fourteen with children – perfect for large gatherings of friends and family.

Upstairs houses the six bedrooms, each with its own unique atmosphere and no less lovely than the last.
