If it's ever too cold to use this space, you can head back inside and sit by the bay window, from which you get a similarly swoon-worthy panorama. Once you can tear your eyes away, you'll probably notice that the interior looks pretty modern — that's because it underwent a complete refurbishment in late 2021. Stock Ghyll Force waterfall is half an hour's walk away, while Rydal Cave can be reached in under ten minutes' drive. You can make the most of the Neff appliances by whipping up an evening feast. This home is located above a chocolate shop so expect to get the occasional whiff of sweetness (and constant cravings!). Luckily the host provides complimentary chocolates for you to pocket as you head into the Lake District for a day of hiking.

For a home in a market town this quaint, inside the twin-level apartment feels surprisingly contemporary. Dazzling white from top to toe, with modern textiles adding a pop of colour, this place is anything but twee. Each vast bedroom spread out across the two floors is as pristine as the next and offer up impressive views of the higgledy-piggledy slate rooftops and craggy hilltops beyond. 

But the clincher here has to that vaulted ceiling living space on the second floor. Mighty exposed beams add the wow-factor and large skylights flood the room with natural daylight. With such vast space, it’s no surprise this apartment was historically the former gallery space of the Heaton Cooper family of artists. 

When you’re ready to soak up the gentle hustle and bustle of Ambleside, you won’t have far to go. Take your pick from the many bars, restaurants, and shops, including the beloved local landmark, Zeffirellis, for its lip-smacking pizza and pasta – all just a three-minute stroll away.

Choose a book from the cute nook and relax on the comfy sofa. This place is the perfect Cumbrian retreat for a family or friends.

The village of Grasmere is just over one mile away, where you’ll find Dove Cottage, the National Trust's Allan Bank and other attractions to enjoy. Practical amenities in Grasmere include a local shop, pharmacy, post office and a choice of eateries and pubs

Step back in time with a stay in this Victorian manor. Set on a private estate, with surrounding countryside views, it’s the picture of a countryside escape. When you can pull yourself away from the scenery, there’s also a cinema and games room. There’s plenty of space to spread out, including a snug, dining area, and living area. The living space is a little dated, but we think it adds to the traditional charm. Being a Victorian home, expect some low ceilings and uneven floors. The garden is on multiple levels, too, but it’s a great spot for the children to run around. Just keep an eye on them around the woodlands – there are a few fallen trees.

This warm and inviting home is in the grounds of the old vicarage estate, having originally been the stables. It’s nestled in the heart of the Lake District, between Lake Windermere and Esthwaite. The home boasts beautiful views down the valley towards Sawrey, Grizedale Forest, and the Old Man of Coniston. It’s just a short walk from Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s home, and is surrounded by a wild meadow planted with fruit and nut tree orchards – this is certainly a picturesque spot for a romantic escape. The Lake District is one of England’s most cherished holiday spots, and it’s very easy to understand why. Striking scenes of huge bodies of water, rugged mountain peaks, and lush greenery as far as the eye can see – especially at its most famous lake, Windermere. Your cottage-like home is just a mile from the town centre of the same name. And with the banks of the lake an easy hike from here, you’ll need somewhere to hang up your boots.

Set on acres of private pasture and thick woods, this Cumbrian estate plays host to several holiday homes. But your apartment is in a lodge-like building set away from the main building. White walls, rustic wooden doors, and a slate roof certainly sound traditional on paper, but the interiors beg to differ.

Sliding doors from the living space lead to a fantastic social outdoor area with seating and dining, as well as a fireplace and barbecue. You can’t come to the Lake District without exploring the area – so have a stroll around Bowness-on-Windermere’s streets filled with boutiques, cafes, and pubs. Or go for a boat trip on Lake Windermere, less than 200 metres away.

Nestled among the Lake District's postcard-worthy scenery, this cottage has adventures in the great outdoors written all over it. It's just a stone's throw from Ambleside, Grasmere, and Loughrigg Tarn – be sure to pack your hiking shoes because you'll be doing plenty of walking. Part of a small estate, summer evenings are best spent in the enclosed private garden, enjoying sundowners in the fresh air. Inside is comfortable and cosy, if a bit corporate feeling – although we think the vaulted beamed ceilings in the bedrooms are a nice touch. Two soaker baths will keep sore muscles to a minimum, and private parking means you can explore far and wide with ease.
