The kitchen is fully equipped to whip up any meal of the day, and there’s a bench outside for a sunny morning coffee. The real highlight here is the view. Stepping outside you’re surrounded by fields and fells, with nothing but the sound of sheep bleating in the distance and birds in the trees. Ambleside is a picturesque village that marks the head of Windermere – England’s largest natural lake – but you could be forgiven for thinking that this modern pad was located in a cosmopolitan city. The interior is luxurious yet simple, following the motto “less is best”. Each piece of furniture has been carefully selected, from the floating bar stools to the curved standing tub. We love the colour palette, which blends soft blues with sunshine yellow. The kitchen tiles light up the open-plan living space and create the perfect cooking space. You can make the most of the Neff appliances by whipping up an evening feast. This home is located above a chocolate shop so expect to get the occasional whiff of sweetness (and constant cravings!). Luckily the host provides complimentary chocolates for you to pocket as you head into the Lake District for a day of hiking.

The village of Grasmere is just over one mile away, where you’ll find Dove Cottage, the National Trust's Allan Bank and other attractions to enjoy. Practical amenities in Grasmere include a local shop, pharmacy, post office and a choice of eateries and pubs

Stock Ghyll Force waterfall is half an hour's walk away, while Rydal Cave can be reached in under ten minutes' drive. There aren’t many places that really embrace the away-from-it-all feel of the deepest darkest Lake District, and this one is housed on an estate once owned by the son of William Wordsworth. Fields fringed by drystone walls and hillsides dotted with sheep are home to walking and cycling trails right from your doorstep. The River Rothay flows right past the garden where fairytale-esque stepping stones connect you to the other side of the bank. Following the riverside walk, you’ll end up in the pretty village of Ambleside in twenty minutes where shops and cafés abound and watersports on Lake Windermere are on offer. The home itself is an eco getaway, housed in a circular stone building designed to blend into the fells behind it. Make the most of countryside views from the terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows. The open living room, kitchen and dining room is flooded with light during the day and the high-spec kitchen is a cook’s dream. Plus, there’s underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove to keep things cosy warm. At sundown, there’s no better place than the furnished patio for a tipple or two as the sky streaks orange and pink.

This quaint Lakeland cottage couldn’t get cosier if it tried. Beautifully renovated, this period cottage in the small hamlet of Clappersgate is rich in history and comfort. We love the traditional beams, wood-burning fireplace and AGA range cooker that make this home feel like a true rural retreat. 

Mornings here are particularly lovely. Your plush bed will be hard to get out of, but the views of Lake Windermere peeking in through the curtains will be sure to encourage you up. Sip your coffee out on the patio, listen to the bird songs and feel the warm morning sun on your face. The country-style kitchen is a pure delight to enjoy a hearty breakfast in – you’ll need some fuel for walking the local trails after all. And once you’ve returned home, boots glazed with Lake District earth, nothing will feel quite as comforting as stretching out on the sofa, feet toasting by the crackling wood burner. 

This area is rich in history and nature. Lake Windermere is a short drive away, where you can rent a rowing boat and contemplate the surroundings that Beatrix Potter’s novels took their inspiration from, or head to the World of Beatrix Potter to see the stories brought to life. The Ambleside Roman Fort, built in the 2nd century under Hadrian’s rule, is just a short drive away. While for cyclists, routes run all around the Langdales, with impressive views of the mountainous peaks and running rivers.

With exclusive lake access, grab your paddleboards or kayaks and take to the lake. Prefer to hike? Trails are abundant locally, including the Grasmere and Rydal Water circuit. And after a fun-filled day outdoors, we recommend a short stroll into Grasmere, where restaurants, bars and tea rooms await.

Embrace the countryside charm of Ambleside from this traditional cottage. You’ll find plenty of restaurants, pubs, and shops within easy walking distance – perfect for families with young children. The little ones will also love the two parks with play areas that are just a few yards away. There’s even a path outside the rear gate leading straight to one of them. While this is convenient, bear in mind that this is a communal path and there’ll be people walking past the back gate throughout the day. But while you’re inside the cottage, you’ll be able to switch off from the outside world – there's a fireplace for ultimate cosiness, as well as plush sitting areas. This warm and inviting home is in the grounds of the old vicarage estate, having originally been the stables. It’s nestled in the heart of the Lake District, between Lake Windermere and Esthwaite. The home boasts beautiful views down the valley towards Sawrey, Grizedale Forest, and the Old Man of Coniston. It’s just a short walk from Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s home, and is surrounded by a wild meadow planted with fruit and nut tree orchards – this is certainly a picturesque spot for a romantic escape. We love the freestanding bathtub and the wood-burning stove of this comfortable, cosy home-from-home.
