At Ullswater Lake, the second biggest in the Lake District, you’ll find a diverse range of landscapes and activities as you hike around its enormous perimeter. From the quaint village of Pooley Bridge, with traditional pubs and cute restaurants, take a fourteen-minute stroll to reach an altogether different scene – an isolated, romantic boathouse. As you arrive, its stone walls and wooden balcony look gloriously rustic. You could even plan to arrive by boat and pull up to the private jetty. From every angle, the surroundings of this home are striking – leafy trees, the glistening lake, and rolling mountains across the water make this setting feel quite special. Inside, the traditional theme continues with chunky beams and vintage furniture. We love the glossy, lacquered wooden pieces in the lounge, as well as the understated chandelier bringing a romantic glow in the evening. Take a look around while you wait for the wood-burning stove to heat up – the bedroom is quite magnificent. A luxurious cushioned headboard, freestanding copper bathtub, and private balcony set over the water are just a few of the fabulous features. When a home is surrounded by beautiful scenery, the interior really has to up its game in order to stand a chance of being noticed and thankfully that's the case with this address. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample amounts of natural daylight, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floors. Added to that, we liked the kitchen finished in a fetching shade of purple, the cosy wood-burning stove in the living room and the smart-looking bathrooms. Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.

Some of the Lake District’s most striking scenery can be found at Ullswater, with its mountainous landscape and unusual z-shaped, ‘ribbon lake’, which is the second largest in the region. But even better than simply visiting this beautiful spot, you can see it all from the windows of this lakeside home. Although it’s just a five-minute drive from the quaint town of Pooley Bridge, this home feels truly rural and isolated. Park up the 4x4 in the gravel drive and head into this warm and welcoming abode. Light up the wood-burning stove in the plush lounge, with its horseshoe sofa that can fit the entire family. Or you can even have your own private hideaway in the second sitting room, with yet another fireplace – this time a sleek, modern hearth set into the wall. For balmy English evenings, another space can be found outdoors, with your very own patio complete with comfy garden furniture. Alfresco drinking and dining will certainly be on the cards out here. While you can see the water from the comfort of your own home, it’s just a seven-minute walk down to Ullswater Marina.

With jaw-dropping views over Lake Ullswater and a private shoreline and jetty, it's clear what caught our eye about this 1900s gatehouse. There's an alfresco terrace to soak in the lakeside views with barbecues. But should the weather turn, the vistas are just as impressive curled up beside the wood-burning stoves indoors, and the games room will keep little ones busy. Set in the sleepy hamlet of Watermillock, besides two traditional pubs and a watersports centre, little else is within walking distance. However, the village of Pooley Bridge, with a cluster of shops and restaurants, is just a 3-mile drive.

Once the hunting lodge for the Duke of Norfolk, this home in the Cumbrian countryside has a sweeping view of Ullswater and the surrounding fells. To make the most of the vantage point, the open dining and living room is up on the top floor, so you can dine and recline with a sublime view – perfect with the wood-burner crackling away. The covered balcony was made for sunny days and the ground-floor bedrooms have French windows leading to a cobbled patio and lawn. You can walk to the edge of Ullswater, or perhaps explore the winding roads on two wheels – bicycle storage is included.

This thoughtfully finished, cosy home from home in the small village of Greystoke makes an ideal base from which to explore the Lake District National Park.

Space inside is limited – the cosy living area converts into a bedroom, thanks to a pull-out bed. There’s also a wood-burning stove here, and you can enjoy idyllic alfresco meals and barbecues outside.

This former farmhouse is found part-way up Hallin Fell at the south end of Ullswater in the Lake District. The secluded location offers spectacular views over the fells and hidden valleys and is the perfect place for a relaxing getaway. The bedrooms are split between the main farmhouse, a converted barn and the old stables and each building is made cosy with underfloor heating and wood-burning stoves. Outside, guests can enjoy walled gardens and a Yorkstone terrace overlooking the rolling hills. For those seeking extra relaxation, a hot tub is available to hire on request – perfect for a soak after hitting the local hiking trails.

One glaring error will hit you the moment you step inside this beautiful cottage – that you haven't booked for long enough. The interior strikes just the right balance between countryside style and more urban chic. So while you'll find a Shaker-style kitchen, a warming wood burner and the welcoming cottage feel, there are plenty of pop art prints, eye-catching tiles and mid-century-style furniture that lends it a more contemporary flair. Upstairs, the three bedrooms are individually decorated, but all are exceptional and luxurious, with pristine white towels and bathrobes provided. That said, only the master comes with an in-room freestanding tub, which certainly elevates it in our eyes. Set in glorious countryside, sandwiched between the North Pennines AONB and Lake District National Park, this home offers fantastic views from its enclosed garden. Topped off with a steaming hot tub, which has plenty of space for six people, it's a truly fabulous place to relax. There are plenty of walks along the trails and footpaths that crisscross the Cumbrian countryside. Circular routes offer a varying degree of challenge depending on preference. Still, the leisurely twenty-five-minute stroll to the Shepherds Inn in Langwathby is our favourite kind of country walk – one with a pub at the end. Despite the feeling of seclusion, you're only four miles from Penrith, so it's easy enough to stock up on essentials when needed.

Garden of Edenhall

Just over a mile from Greystoke, this cabin promises pastoral views and sits on a country estate. Kids can't stay, but baby travel equipment is provided for infants. Though there's a barbecue and fire pit here for your downtime, we think you'll want to partake in the activities available, including pony trekking, cycle tours, and clay pigeon shooting. While there's little space indoors, you'll sleep on a feather pull-out bed and receive a thoughtful welcome hamper. Plus, the Lake District is only 4 miles away.

Out in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, this cosy cottage sits right between the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines AONB. It’s safe to say there’s no shortage of walking trails over fields and fells, hills and heather-clad dales. It’s a twenty-minute walk (or four-minute drive) to the village of Langwathby with its train station, village shop and handful of pubs and a coffee shop. Further afield, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Penrith, a ten-minute drive away. A classic rose-stone exterior greets you on arrival, but it’s the inside of this home that really impresses. Walls of reclaimed wood, exposed stonework and a vaulted ceiling in the living room are simply stunning. There’s a wood-burner to keep things cosy and each piece of furniture – headboards made from old pallets, a striking faux-bird lampshade and old bronze keys in the doors – feels handpicked. If the glorious free-standing slipper tub in the master bedroom doesn’t invite you for a dip, perhaps the wood-clad hot tub outside can sooth sore feet after a day in the hills. There’s nothing but the bubbles, the lawn, fields and the lake in the distance out here.

Unplug from digital distractions at this shepherd’s hut, set on the grounds of a Grade I-listed hall. Location-wise, it’s just over a mile from Greystoke village and 4 miles from the Lake District, making it an ideal base for exploring Cumbria’s unspoilt Eden Valley. Compact yet well-appointed, it’s the perfect bolthole for a couple or solo traveller. There’s a breakfast hamper to get you started and a picnic table by the stream for lunches alfresco. Complimentary logs and charcoal are provided for the fire pit or barbecue, and your host can even help arrange activities like clay pigeon shooting and cycle hire on the wider estate.

Located part way up Hallin Fell in Martindale, this scenic spot offers views over the fells and hidden valleys of the Lake District. The Grade II listed farmhouse invites guests to relax amid nature. With cast iron open fireplaces and floor-to-ceiling windows framing the landscape, the living area presents a cosy and comfortable space, perfect after days in the countryside. There is one bathroom per bedroom here, giving guests a sense of privacy when needed. For more social affairs, the host can help arrange a catering service so that you can host group meals on special occasions. And you needn't worry about leaving your furry friends behind, as pets are welcome to join you on your stay.

Get ready for kid-free glamping about 4 miles from the Lake District. Set on a scenic estate, this solar-powered cabin opens you up to fresh-air activities including brown trout fishing, pony trekking, and clay pigeon shooting. Set in the small village of Crosby Ravensworth, the space is just a 300-metre stroll to the local pub, The Butchers Arms, which won a Good Food award in 2019. We love the options for walking here, whether that be following the trails from the house and into the Yorkshire Dales, or driving to the nearby North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) or to the Lake District national park. In an hour's drive, you will reach the iconic Lake Windermere – over 10 miles of water, and also the spot which inspired poet William Wordsworth and more recently, a song written by Taylor Swift.

This charming home is in the Falls development in old Ambleside, just a five-minute walk from Ambleside yet in a remarkably peaceful setting. The home overlooks the Stockghyll Gorge, so the sound of water cascading down the rocks becomes the soundtrack to your stay – there are two terraces to enjoy this from, one of which has a barbecue. There are many delightful walks that you can set off on straight from the front door, so you won’t need to use your car much after your arrival. We love this home and think you will too. 

Kingfisher Blue

Drystone walls snake across emerald-green fields and heather-clad hills dot the landscape of the Lake District. This old stone cottage is in the middle of it all, with walking trails across hills and fells leading right from the doorstep into the great outdoors. If you fancy heading for civilisation instead, Grasmere is a twenty-minute walk away with its selection of bars, restaurants and traditional country inns. After a day in your hiking boots, there’s nothing better than returning to the crackle of the wood-burning stove in this quaint little cottage, while admiring the timber-beamed ceiling above you. The kitchen is fully equipped to whip up any meal of the day, and there’s a bench outside for a sunny morning coffee. The real highlight here is the view. Stepping outside you’re surrounded by fields and fells, with nothing but the sound of sheep bleating in the distance and birds in the trees. Should the weather turn, you can enjoy this vista from the comfort of the living room, where a window seat makes for the ideal reading spot and underfloor heating keeps toes toasty warm.

The apartment was once a bank that has been lovingly converted into a cosy home-from-home, ideal for a couple. We love the views of Ambleside that can be admired from the living space and bedroom. Set off on walks straight from your front door, or drive to some of the Lake District’s most loved spots.

Stay awhile at this stunning Grade II Listed 18th Century residence, located on the main road between the Lake District National Park's villages of Staveley and Ings – and just a five-minute drive from Lake Windemere. Before you've even set foot through the majestic fifteen-panelled entrance door, you know this isn't your average holiday home. Eyes immediately draw to the stunning sweeping oak staircase, with two panoramic windows revealing a wooded garden that beckons for you to relax in. Inside, this exquisite home comes with all the period trimmings – original feature alcoves, parquet wooden flooring, sash windows, panelled walls, and antique furnishings galore. Upstairs, discover two immaculately presented bedrooms where five-star hotel standard king-size beds await, while a double-ended slipper bath brings a touch of decadence to the bathrooms. Back downstairs, the well-equipped kitchen with stylish black AGA and Belfast sink makes preparing mealtimes a joy, and with two large reception rooms, there's space for you to all spill out here. When it's time to spread your wings, Staveley is a leisurely ten-minute stroll away, where you'll find a traditional pub, quirky cafes, a bakery, gelato bar, a microbrewery, bike hire, and so the list goes on. And of course, there's Lake Windermere – how could we forget.

Wink to the Past

In a part of the UK with such stunning scenery, it really pays to have a home with some outdoor space here. Luckily, from this apartment's balcony, you get beautiful views of Lake Windermere and the hills surrounding the waters.

If it's ever too cold to use this space, you can head back inside and sit by the bay window, from which you get a similarly swoon-worthy panorama. Once you can tear your eyes away, you'll probably notice that the interior looks pretty modern — that's because it underwent a complete refurbishment in late 2021. The large kitchen and its collection of top-of-the-range appliances are particularly impressive, as are the pristine bathrooms.

When you're in the mood to see what the Lake District has to offer, you're in an excellent position to do so. Stock Ghyll Force waterfall is half an hour's walk away, while Rydal Cave can be reached in under ten minutes' drive. The nearby town of Ambleside has a cinema, cafes and even a Roman fort to explore, too.

This old farmhouse, located in the heart of the Eden Valley, offers panoramic views over the Pennines and surrounding fields. An idyllic spot for nature lovers and those in need of some peace and quiet, the comfortable bedrooms give guests the luxury of having their own en-suite bathroom. The main living areas are just as inviting, and you'll find two wood-burning stoves to curl up in front of after a long country walk. Come evening time, the dining room table even converts to a half-sized snooker table. Alternatively, you'll be within walking distance of Melmerby village and its local pub.

This charming Tudor castle, built in 1560, has been fully restored to create the perfect romantic retreat for two. Set in the picturesque Teesdale landscape, this historic property is located near the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Park, as well as the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Guests can admire the ornate roof beams carved from oak trees felled over 400 years ago in the dining hall, and relax in the cosy living room with a wood-burning stove set within a Tudor fireplace. The bedroom features a double bed on an oak floor adorned with Persian rugs and offers stunning views of the walled garden and the high moors beyond. The property also boasts an enclosed courtyard garden and two designated parking spaces. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome for a small additional charge.

An eleven-minute drive to the bustling town of Hexham (or just over thirty minutes to the metropolis of Newcastle), this delightful cottage offers a secluded, rural retreat in the north of England. The setting is postcard-perfect – a white picket fence, traditional iron lamppost, and handmade stone wall surround this cute and cosy home. As you stroll down your paved entrance, you’ll notice your manicured lawn, flowerbed, and dining patio. On a sunny day, it’s the ideal spot for a picnic. Or on a chilly evening, it’s even better for stargazing with a hot toddy in hand. Inside, the living space is a welcoming mix of old and new. The stylish, light-grey kitchen is understated and modern. But we love the traditional countryside features such as flagstone flooring and a sandstone, inglenook fireplace with a wood-burning stove. You feel like you've gone back in time when you’re stoking the flames with the cast-iron tools, and adding fresh logs from the wicker basket. And there’s plenty of history to discover outside the home too – take a thirty-five-minute walk to the 2000-year-old Chesters Roman Fort and Museum on Hadrian’s Wall.

A truly stunning rural retreat, this home is sat on a hill overlooking the beautiful South Tyne Valley – just five minutes from Hadrian's Wall. Away from it all, yet within walking distance of the village pub, this place really has to be one of our favourites in this neck of the woods. A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we love the master bedroom's view and its lovely freestanding bath. Here you'll be in prime walking country, with hikes from your doorstep. And it's just a ten-minute drive to the market town of Hexham.

This rustic retreat is nestled between the Pennines and the Lake District where it offers idyllic views and a wonderful sense of peace. Consisting of a traditional farmhouse and adjoining cottage, guests can enjoy cosy rooms, wood-burning fires and a snooker table along with a range of extra services – including hot tub hire and catering (available on request). It’s also child-friendly with plenty to explore in the surroundings. From here, it’s just a short walk to Melmerby (with a great local pub), while Ullswater Lake is within easy driving distance.

Ambleside is a picturesque village that marks the head of Windermere – England’s largest natural lake – but you could be forgiven for thinking that this modern pad was located in a cosmopolitan city. The interior is luxurious yet simple, following the motto “less is best”. Each piece of furniture has been carefully selected, from the floating bar stools to the curved standing tub. We love the colour palette, which blends soft blues with sunshine yellow. The kitchen tiles light up the open-plan living space and create the perfect cooking space. You can make the most of the Neff appliances by whipping up an evening feast. This home is located above a chocolate shop so expect to get the occasional whiff of sweetness (and constant cravings!). Luckily the host provides complimentary chocolates for you to pocket as you head into the Lake District for a day of hiking.

This classic yet contemporary home is just a few minutes' walk from the centre of Ambleside and perfectly placed to capture a picturesque glimpse of the steeple of St Mary's Church rising above the trees. So sip your morning coffee on the balcony and take a minute to enjoy the charming view. Once you arrive and park the car, we love that there's little reason to move it again as you can find everything you need on your doorstep. However, if you do decide to explore further afield, the home is only a ten-minute drive from the head of Windermere, meaning that exploring the Lake District is as easy as hopping in the car with a picnic. And when you return from the day's adventures, stroll down to one of the country pubs for dinner and a restorative pint of ale, or simply flop down in that spacious living room.

Perched on the Scottish borders, you’re perfectly placed for day trips to North Scotland, Cumbria’s Hadrian’s Wall, and the coast of Solway Firth – all just forty minutes’ drive away. Or you could just stay holed up at the cottage and country grounds, steeped in history. Be sure to ask your hosts about the fascinating past of the estate – once a no man’s land and a haven to criminals. The host’s family owns the estate these days, so you’re in safe hands here. Follow the woodland path from the cottage and discover a wood-burning hot tub beneath a canopy of leaves. We hear watching the sunset peek through the trees as the woodland bats begin to fly is magical. Then fire up the barbecue for an evening dining under the stars. During the day, head down to the crystal-clear waters of the River Esk and over the suspension bridge for brisk walks in the estate's grounds. Then head home to get toasty beside the log burner before a long soak in the rolltop bath found in the elegant bedroom upstairs.

Nestled amongst the east wing of a sprawling estate, this maisonette has plenty of room for families. Cosy and inviting with wooden beams and angled ceilings, this home is sure to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling when you arrive. Snuggle up on the Chesterfield sofas in front of the electric fire while your favourite movie plays on the DVD player. Rustle up delicious meals in the stylish kitchen, then gather around the dining table for family feasts, sharing stories and bottles of bubbly straight out of the wine fridge. All the bedrooms are roomy and traditionally styled, and with private en-suites, nobody will have to queue for the loo. But our favourite spot is the garden. After an alfresco lunch in the courtyard, wander the several acres of grounds and woodlands. The views are absolutely stunning – they stretch towards River Eden and to the Castle Carrock Fells, promising you a slice of that peaceful rural life. Keen cyclists can roam the country lanes by bike or just stroll along the river – viaduct towers, hidden caves and waterfalls are just a few things you'll discover. When your stomach starts rumbling, walk ten minutes into town for local ales and mouth-watering fare at the village pub. Both Carlisle and the Lake District are easily reached by car if you fancy a day out, though we're quite happy to while away our afternoons in Wetheral, exploring the countryside.

Built on the edge of the former quarry, it's one of only a handful of lodge-style homes in this exclusive spot. It's bound to appeal to lovers of the great outdoors, with walking and cycling routes nearby, and it's just a stone's throw from the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. It's set in a private lane, and while we love the stylish, modern interiors, we couldn't get enough of the lake views from the terrace. With a private hot tub to sink into and a fire pit, it's the perfect spot as the sun sets. Inside, there's a contemporary fireplace and a huge TV, so getting cosy shouldn't be a problem, and we love the sociable, open-plan layout. You can cook in the fabulous kitchen and eat at the dining table – perhaps with the bi-fold doors open. Here you'll be just a twenty-five-minute drive from Lancaster and Morecombe, with the little village of Over Kellet just down the road. It's just fifteen minutes by car to the vast beaches of nearby Morecombe Bay.

Once the dwelling of the estate's groundskeeper, this Lake District property has been refurbished to become a contemporary countryside getaway.

Inside, the design could definitely be described as minimalist, with walls painted in soothing whites adorned only by a few well-chosen pieces of artwork, a sleek kitchen and a preference for simple wooden furnishings. The wood-burning fireplace situated in an archway between the living room and dining area is sure to keep the whole ground floor warm and toasty.

But what about during those balmy months in which a roaring fire isn't necessary? The alfresco dining table on the terrace is sure to see some use during this time, as is the barbecue. You'll probably want to work up an appetite first, however, and there's an onsite heated swimming pool and an activity centre offering everything from watersports, 4x4 off-road driving, clay pigeon shooting, archery, axe-throwing or bushcraft.

The home's glorious traditional features - original stone floors, warm wooden beams, a roaring fireplace - are full of character, but it's the styling of this home that will make you feel at ease from the moment you arrive. In the welcoming living room, the exquisitely-soft turquoise sofa is the perfect place to while away the hours with a book from the well-stocked bookshelf, and Eastern-inspired touches (including Buddha statues) add to the sense of calm. The kitchen, with its white marble countertops and exposed stone walls, is the ideal spot to cook up a rib-sticking meal. The bedrooms are elegant but simply furnished, with mustard yellow blankets and a dried flower wreath creating little moments of joy. But perhaps the real peace here comes from the scenery – this home is in the Yorkshire Dales’ Arkengarthdale, a beautifully remote location where you can hike for miles without seeing another soul. Bliss.
