If you’re in York for culture, history, and plenty of pub trips, then this home couldn’t be any more perfectly placed. You’ll be living a two-minute walk from York Minster, and just three from the Theatre Royal, York Art Gallery, and the watering holes of Stonegate. This ancient street, where the house is located, was once the medieval route into the city from the north. But today, it’s your route to luxe living in the city centre. A former jewellery shop, the quaint brick building still has quirky features and a creative soul. As soon as you step inside, the striking decor is sure to capture your imagination. Floor tiles with a star pattern give the space a Moorish vibe, an exposed brick alcove shows how the home has retained traditional architecture, but then modern elements such as the charcoal-grey kitchen cabinets bring you back to the 21st-century. Families and friends alike will settle right in here and pets are welcome to join you, but thanks to its many stairs, low windows and trip hazards, young children will need supervision at all times. There is space to sit out with a drink or an alfresco meal in the small courtyard garden – this is overlooked by surrounding buildings and may not feel fully private. Self-check-in makes arrival easy and convenient, though the nearest parking spot is a short walk away. We think the best way to explore the area is on foot though, so having a car here isn't a necessity.

Arriving at the house, you’re greeted with a freshly-baked cake and all the essentials for a cuppa. You can then snuggle up on one of the sofas in front of the wood-burning stove, or if it’s sunny sit out on the bistro seating in the private south-facing courtyard. In the bedroom, it's all about the finer details with an Egyptian cotton towel for each guest, pocket sprung mattresses, and original fireplaces adding a touch of Georgian charm. 

The basement was once a pub cellar and has been transformed into a private, cosy cinema room and small games room with foosball. It is the ideal spot to wind down in the evening along with Netflix and a library of books.

Found on the famous Micklegate street — complete with four Grade-I listed buildings and three medieval churches — this apartment sits within a building that dates back to the fifteenth century. Nowhere is this fact more obvious than in the wooden ceiling beams in the living area and the timber frames seen in other rooms. Despite these prominent period features, the bulk of the interior is actually quite modern, with cleansingly white walls, en vogue wooden floorboards and a sleek white kitchen. It's a lovely place to return to after a day of learning about the city's interesting past. Five minutes' walk in one direction will take you to Micklegate Bar and the city walls, while the same amount of time in the opposite direction will see you reach the museum at Fairfax House

Affectionally known as Bishy Road to locals, Bishopthorpe Road is home to an award-winning collection of independent shops and is the frequent venue for street parties. It's a great place to stay near if you want to see a more authentic side of York and as luck would have it, this house sits on a side street just off the famous thoroughfare. We can't really find anything to fault with the interior — the long, open living space on the ground floor is bright and welcoming thanks to a big bay window on one side and glass doors on the other. Go through these and you'll be greeted by a courtyard with seating for alfresco feasts in the summer months. For want of a better word, it's all very homely, which is exactly what you want when visiting a new city. If you fancy a jaunt into the historic centre, you can be on the other side of the River Ouse in under ten minutes on foot.

Set in the city centre, just a minutes’ walk from The Shambles, this charming apartment resides in a historic building – the birthplace of Joseph Rowntree. Adorned with artefacts and old photographs, you’ll get a real sense of its history all while being central to the sights of the town. Wake up and enjoy coffee at the circular marble table alongside a hearty breakfast. When you return back at the end of the day, the living room has a deep grey sofa and a velvet blue chair to settle in as you unwind in front of the TV. There’s a pretty tiled kitchen for self-catered meals to enjoy at home. There's space to sit out here with this wonderful backdrop, but don't worry if it's too cold, as the floor-to-ceiling windows running around the length of the living space ensures that it's possible to take it in while sitting indoors. 

The interior takes the best parts of 1970s design — the earthy colour palette, patterned wallpaper and natural materials — to create a space that's retro without feeling dated. For the cherry on the cake, the kitchen has plenty of surface space for cooking up a storm and a bathtub upstairs will help you relax after a long day of sightseeing, which is welcomingly easy to do from the central location. Five minutes' walk will get to Museum Gardens, while the same amount of time in the opposite direction will see you reach the medieval shopping street, York Shambles.

The apartment also benefits from access to a lovely L-shaped outdoor courtyard with a hanging chair that's perfect for lazy afternoons reading outdoors in the sunshine. From your central location, even the furthest reaches of York city centre are no more than a fifteen-minute walk away, while the majority is just a five-minute stroll. Be sure to marvel at the magnificent York Minster, stride along The Shambles, and while away an afternoon or two in its many art galleries and museums.

Both bedrooms are stylish and each has a dedicated bathroom so there won't be any need to queue for the shower in the morning. Little luxuries include welcome treats, underfloor heating in the bathrooms and a funky remote control backlight behind the TV – to set the mood for the evening. The location couldn't be better either, with a walk of fewer than ten minutes into the city centre.

This homely apartment, with a fantastic burst of lemon yellow to brighten up grey mornings, is well-placed for exploring York’s best bits. When hunger strikes, the kitchenette is well-equipped for knocking up your favourite dishes – though if you’d prefer to hang up your chef’s hat, you’re no more than a ten-minute walk from a clamour of restaurants. Start your York adventure at the famous cathedral, just four minutes from your doorstep. From here, take the seven-minute saunter to the Shambles where crooked and characterful alleyways lay claim to a number of quirky independent shops and cafes. Once evening falls, embark on a spooky ghost hunt or quench your thirst with a well-deserved craft cocktail in a cutting-edge bar.

There's a timeless quality to this home, just a short walk from the city centre. Part of a period terrace, it's as pretty as a picture – both inside and out. You're spoilt for choice here, with two sitting rooms to choose between. Both super comfortable and classically furnished, there's the front room with its arched window and cosy sofas, and the former dining room with its armchairs and log burning stove. Giving the option of letting the youngsters have their own living space, it's a handy arrangement made possible by the kitchen extension. In this modern space, you'll have an excellent, fully kitted-out kitchen (hello range cooker!) and a dining area that opens out to the charming little courtyard. In the summer evenings, it's the perfect spot for dinner and drinks outside. With two good size bedrooms and a luxurious bathroom with a freestanding bathtub, we didn't think this warm, welcoming home could get any better. But it can – you're welcome to bring along your pet too.

Bootham Bliss

A stay in York deserves a home that radiates history from its seams. This 16th-century apartment fits right in with the narrow, medieval streets around it and has an enviable view of York Minster. If that’s not a testament to how central you are, buzzing tearooms, trendy restaurants and cosy pubs are all on your doorstep. The building itself is a typical black and white, timber-clad home and inside you’ll find a potted history of the rooms from their design. Wood-panelled walls whisper of the 19th-century, while the gnarled old timber beams of the 16th-century show through too. The living room is a regal space, like the drawing rooms of times gone by, and has big sash windows, high ceilings and an upright piano for an evening sing-along. The kitchen has everything you need to make every meal of the day (perhaps using some of the fabulous produce from the artisan deli downstairs), and the dining area has a delightful antler and top-hat feature on the wall. Bedrooms are also a trip through history, tucked up in the eaves beneath darkwood beams. The master bedroom downstairs features a hand-made king-size bed for the perfect night's sleep. An extra bonus is the little outdoor seating area where you can catch a breath of fresh air and hear the bells of the Minster toll in the background.

Sitting on the right-hand side of the River Ouse close to the locally loved Bishopthorpe Road — a street given the nickname 'The Notting Hill of the North' and for good reason — this house brings some contemporary luxury to a highly coveted location.

The open-concept ground floor is sure to draw admiring gasps upon first glance. In this space, you'll find everything from a wood-burning stove and a simply huge modern kitchen to a cosy courtyard accessed through a glass door. Let's just say that whatever the weather, you'll have somewhere effortlessly stylish in which to relax.

The first floor doesn't disappoint, either. The bedrooms are minimalist in their design, particularly in the master which has some chic hand-crafted sliding wardrobes. This room also benefits from a view of York's City Walls out through the window.

These medieval boundaries take eight minutes to reach on foot and many of the city's most famous sights lie just beyond that — York Minster is a twenty-minute walk door-to-door. Just across the water from the city centre, this luxurious three-storey apartment comes equipped with everything you'd expect of a property of this standard, plus a few little extras. The ground floor kitchen enjoys plenty of light, courtesy of the double-height ceiling with windows on every level. Climb a small flight of stairs up to an open-plan dining area, with space for up to six people to dine in comfort. You'll also find the sitting room on this level, with an inviting corner sofa, plus a couple of single chairs that can be converted into beds if you need them. Continue through the home to find a flexible sleeping space and master bathroom on this floor, with two further bedrooms (one en-suite) on the top floor. Start each day by picking up provisions from the Pig & Pastry cafe just around the corner before crossing the river into the medieval heart of York. It'll take you a very manageable fifteen-to-twenty-minute stroll to reach the headline sights, including the famous Jorvik Viking Museum, York Minster cathedral and the shopping streets of The Shambles.

Located just ten minutes' walk from the centre of York, this address is comprised of two townhouses on a quiet residential street. Given that they're neighbouring properties, it will probably come as no surprise to learn that the layouts of both homes are pretty similar and they have been styled in a complementary fashion too, with wooden floors, traditional furnishings and walls painted in muted colours.

There are plenty of welcome extras to discover, too. South-facing terraces with seating can be found outside the back door of each home. If it's a rainy afternoon, there's a basement in one of the houses that has a home cinema set-up, a foosball table and a large selection of board games. Upstairs, the Japanese-style soaking tub provides an altogether more relaxing option.

Although York's historic attractions in the centre of the city are easily reachable on foot, there are plenty more distractions even closer by. Bishopthorpe Road — affectionately known to locals as Bishy Road — awaits at the end of the street and is packed with great restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs. If you're looking to get acquainted with a number of them, the host can lend guests a House of York Craft Savvy Card, which offers a quarter of the bill at many independent spots.

Now that's what we call a view. Looking directly onto the west front of York Minster, this apartment has one of the best outlooks in the city – and it's entirely yours to enjoy. View aside (if that's even possible), the rest of the apartment is a bright and charming place to relax. The simple pared-back style means that the scenery is front and centre, but sleek extras like the rainfall showers, Bluetooth speakers and a Nespresso machine are icing on the cake. It's comfortable and has plenty of space to hang out when you're not exploring. Speaking of, you're truly in the centre of York here. Not only is York Minster so close you can almost touch it, but the other historic areas are also a short stroll away. Shop for fresh produce, quirky crafts and vintage clothes in Shambles Market – a six-minute walk away – or grab a pint and some tasty pub grub at the local taverns. Restaurants, cafes, museums – you name it, you can walk to it, so there's no doubt that this apartment is perfectly placed for adventures.

How Great Thou Art

Modern and bright, this stylish flat has plenty of room to make yourself at home. Big windows overlook the bustling Bishopthorpe Road in the living room and a squishy sectional sofa is ideal for stretching out after a long day on your feet. Pad into the eat-in kitchen when you're feeling peckish, as it's well-stocked with everything you need to rustle up a meal. Share a bottle of wine around the table in the window – also a great spot for playing board games and working from home – before nodding off to sleep in the comfortable bedroom. We love this location – there are plenty of independent shops, cafes and eateries along Bishopthorpe Road to take advantage of, and York's ancient city walls are just moments away. If green space is what you crave, Rowantree Park along the River Ouse is a ten-minute walk, but the real draw here is York Minster and the historic city centre – easily reachable in less than twenty minutes on foot.

Right by the ancient walls of York, eight minutes (on foot) from the historical centre of the city, and a twenty-one-minute stroll from the York Minster, this home is perfectly located.

On arrival, little personal touches like a House of York Craft Savvy Card (for discounts at local shops, cafés and bars), homemade cakes and bits and pieces to make a cup of tea are a welcomed sight. The tiled fireplace is the focal point of the open-plan kitchen, living and dining room. Plush leather sofas and a curated selection of holiday books create the perfect spot to unwind in the evening along with streaming options and a library of DVDs. Country-cottage style dining table and chairs add to that feeling of bucolic charm, though you’re in the heart of the city. Up in the bedrooms, wrought iron bed frames and stylish floral furnishings on the comfy beds continue the cosy cottage vibe. Still, you're just a short walk from York’s diverse array of restaurants, the 13th-century Gothic cathedral and the river cruises.

A period cottage just ten minutes' walk from the city centre, it's the perfect base in this vibrant city. Character features like its cast iron fireplace and sash windows are complemented by Victorian-style radiators, vintage wall art and classic furnishings – with a few antique pieces thrown in and some lovely William Morris prints. Cosy up on the squashy sofa, eat at the table in the dining room or sit outside in the courtyard with a glass of wine. We loved spending downtime in the living space, we were particularly fond of the licks of moody blue paint and antique trunks and chests. Cleverly placed mirrors open up the room, while deep, tufted sofas add a touch of cosiness. In the kitchen, you’ll find all you’ll need for putting together your favourite meals. After a hearty lunch at the bistro set, people-watch by the waterfront or follow the river into the city for cream tea in the medieval Shambles and a history lesson at the JORVIK Viking Centre, just a six-minute walk away. When it’s time to call it a day, head home to your comfy double bed and wind down with your favourite show on the nifty pop-up TV.

Housed in period conversion just a six-minute walk from the famous York Minster, this apartment isn’t the flashiest in our collection, but its location makes it perfect for sightseeing endeavours. The decor is a little sparse and modest for our liking. That said, the kitchen is a good size and the main bedroom’s walk-in closet equipped with a vanity is a nice touch. Free on-site parking will come in handy for those looking to explore further afield, but with countless historic sights within easy walking distance, we think the best way to explore the city is on foot.

This home is something of a hidden gem, tucked away in the centre of historic York. Enjoy treats from the famous Betty’s in the welcome hamper to start off your day before stepping outside and immediately taking in beautiful vistas of the York Minster – walk in its direction for only four minutes and you’ll reach the beautiful gothic cathedral. Afterwards, head to The Shambles, just five minutes from home, and explore the old historic maze of twisting lanes – one of the best-preserved medieval shopping streets in Europe. When you return home, you’ll find a welcoming and cosy atmosphere enhanced by comfy red sofas, purple curtains and an antique dresser. The kitchen is modern and convenient for meals at home, while the wooden dining table is perfect for accommodating the group at dinnertime. In the bedrooms, you’ll find welcoming floral prints and bright yellow pillows that promise a restorative night of rest.

Located on a historic street which was once the medieval route into the city from the north, this apartment is housed in a listed building where you can truly feel immersed in history. Just a three-minute walk from the striking York Minster Cathedral (as well as a fantastic view of it from upstairs), and one hundred metres from York Art Gallery, this home is in a coveted location for history buffs and art fans alike. And the same goes for the interiors. Creative, classy, and full of antique features, the decor is extremely elegant. The bright living room has original sash windows and a marble fireplace. The solid hardwood dining table is illuminated by a gilded chandelier, and the modern kitchen is propped up by an original timber beam. Overall, this charming mix of old and new creates a charming, character-filled home with a luxury edge. We recommend starting the holiday with a glass of champagne as you check out the views of the ancient streets below. Or on a chilly evening, this could be even better enjoyed in the freestanding tub.

If you're looking for a unique place to stay in the city of York, look no further. This former malthouse has been converted into a fantastic holiday home, with plenty of character that will please even the most discerning of guests. 

The Grade-II listed building dates back to the 19th century, and you can admire the traditional equipment still on show today. However, there is plenty of modern charm here too – you'll love the comfy sofa and bright green kitchen where you can cook up your favourite dishes. After a delicious meal at the stylish dining bench, you can head downstairs to the games room for some fun. Challenge your guests to a round of pool, or simply chill out on the beanbags as you plan your itinerary for the following day.
