Families and friends alike will settle right in here and pets are welcome to join you, but thanks to its many stairs, low windows and trip hazards, young children will need supervision at all times. There is space to sit out with a drink or an alfresco meal in the small courtyard garden – this is overlooked by surrounding buildings and may not feel fully private. Self-check-in makes arrival easy and convenient, though the nearest parking spot is a short walk away. We think the best way to explore the area is on foot though, so having a car here isn't a necessity.

The apartment also benefits from access to a lovely L-shaped outdoor courtyard with a hanging chair that's perfect for lazy afternoons reading outdoors in the sunshine. From your central location, even the furthest reaches of York city centre are no more than a fifteen-minute walk away, while the majority is just a five-minute stroll. Be sure to marvel at the magnificent York Minster, stride along The Shambles, and while away an afternoon or two in its many art galleries and museums.

If you’re staying in York, seeing the spires of the 13th-century York Minster Cathedral from your window is akin to an Eiffel Tower view in Paris. The largest of its kind in Northern Europe, this magnificent structure is well worth a visit – just a ten-minute walk from this duplex apartment. Despite such historic surroundings, the interiors of this home are tastefully modern. As you enter through the hall, the first thing you’ll notice is a full-wall mural showing you a printed map of the entire city. After you’ve found your bearings, head onwards to the bright lounge. There’s a certain Scandi vibe created by the furnishings and colour scheme – we particularly love the yellow rug, plus matching throws and cushions. The elegant, modern armchairs make for an inviting perch where you can enjoy a proper Yorkshire brew on arrival (you might even find this in the welcome hamper from your host). But on a sunny day, you might want to take your tea out to your private balcony. Open up the French doors from the lounge, where the playful yellow colour scheme continues with a cute metal dining set – anyone for a slice of cake too?

You'll find this cosy home only a fifteen-minute walk from the majestic York Minster. It's tucked away on a quiet street lined with pretty cottages, with the restaurants, pubs and shops in the city centre just a short stroll away. Open the front door and step into the charming living room. We love the repurposed fireplace – now a decorative statement piece – and the sheer amount of light spilling through the windows. Kick-off your shoes and snuggle up on the squishy sofa, watching your favourite films – the host provides complimentary Netflix and Amazon Prime accounts, so you'll have plenty of options. Come dinnertime, pad into the country-style kitchen and rustle up a meal – it's stocked with cookware and cutlery to make cooking a breeze. On sunny days, take your fare into the lovely courtyard and dine alfresco. Although it's small, we think the wisteria-covered walls and pretty flowerboxes turn it into a tranquil, whimsical space to unwind with a glass of wine as the day slowly draws to a close.

There's a timeless quality to this home, just a short walk from the city centre. Part of a period terrace, it's as pretty as a picture – both inside and out. You're spoilt for choice here, with two sitting rooms to choose between. Both super comfortable and classically furnished, there's the front room with its arched window and cosy sofas, and the former dining room with its armchairs and log burning stove. Giving the option of letting the youngsters have their own living space, it's a handy arrangement made possible by the kitchen extension. In this modern space, you'll have an excellent, fully kitted-out kitchen (hello range cooker!) and a dining area that opens out to the charming little courtyard. In the summer evenings, it's the perfect spot for dinner and drinks outside. With two good size bedrooms and a luxurious bathroom with a freestanding bathtub, we didn't think this warm, welcoming home could get any better. But it can – you're welcome to bring along your pet too.

Bright and welcoming, this house is a great base for exploring historic York. The decked garden is a bonus for a city break, and the modern, clean interiors make for an attractive home-from-home. There’s plenty of room for everyone to dine together or unwind in the lounge, so you won’t feel crowded. Each room has an en-suite bathroom, so this is an ideal choice for a large group – you don’t want to be queuing for the shower when you could be meandering along the Shambles, just fifteen minutes away.

A recently converted landmark building within two minutes' walk of York Minster, the period exterior of this place doesn't give away the sleek, modern apartment inside. Offering all the comforts of home, you'll feel like a local in no time. With everything so new it's practically sparkling, you'll have a sociable, open-plan living space with a comfy sofa and a smart dining table, along with a high-spec contemporary kitchen area with all the kit you'll need to cook at home. Both bedrooms are stylish and each has a dedicated bathroom so there won't be any need to queue for the shower in the morning. Little luxuries include welcome treats, underfloor heating in the bathrooms and a funky remote control backlight behind the TV – to set the mood for the evening. The location couldn't be better either, with a walk of fewer than ten minutes into the city centre.

We love how sleek and contemporary this home is, and the harmonious colour palette of mustard and dark grey makes it clear a lot of thought went into designing this city pad. It might be chic, but it’s still wonderfully homely. Whether you’re watching the TV on the plush sofa, savouring a coffee on your balcony, tucking into dinner around the dining table, or reading a book in your cosy bed, you’ll feel right at home. 

Not only is the apartment beautiful, but it’s also in a fantastic location. Nestled in a residential area but just a short walk from the city centre, you get the best of both worlds. A stay in York deserves a home that radiates history from its seams. This 16th-century apartment fits right in with the narrow, medieval streets around it and has an enviable view of York Minster. If that’s not a testament to how central you are, buzzing tearooms, trendy restaurants and cosy pubs are all on your doorstep. The building itself is a typical black and white, timber-clad home and inside you’ll find a potted history of the rooms from their design. Wood-panelled walls whisper of the 19th-century, while the gnarled old timber beams of the 16th-century show through too. The living room is a regal space, like the drawing rooms of times gone by, and has big sash windows, high ceilings and an upright piano for an evening sing-along. The kitchen has everything you need to make every meal of the day (perhaps using some of the fabulous produce from the artisan deli downstairs), and the dining area has a delightful antler and top-hat feature on the wall. Bedrooms are also a trip through history, tucked up in the eaves beneath darkwood beams. The master bedroom downstairs features a hand-made king-size bed for the perfect night's sleep. An extra bonus is the little outdoor seating area where you can catch a breath of fresh air and hear the bells of the Minster toll in the background.

On sunny days, admire the ancient stonework from your small patio, savouring a glass of wine as the evening draws to a close. It's an unparalleled view and we adore it – morning, noon or night, you'll want to spend every second dining alfresco and soaking up the views. The interior is modern and stylish, with lots of space to spread out and unwind. Sink into the squishy L-shaped sofa, do a spot of work from one of the two desks and whip up a meal in the pastel-coloured kitchen, which has everything you'll need for cooking. But when you want to explore your surroundings, you're just a ten-minute walk from York Minster, nine from the famous Betty's Tea Rooms and six from Shambles Market. With restaurants, pubs and plenty of local shops to browse, you'll have more than enough to keep you busy – and the private off-road parking is the icing on the cake.

Housed in period conversion just a six-minute walk from the famous York Minster, this apartment isn’t the flashiest in our collection, but its location makes it perfect for sightseeing endeavours. The decor is a little sparse and modest for our liking. That said, the kitchen is a good size and the main bedroom’s walk-in closet equipped with a vanity is a nice touch. Free on-site parking will come in handy for those looking to explore further afield, but with countless historic sights within easy walking distance, we think the best way to explore the city is on foot.

In a city with as rich a heritage as York, it only makes sense to find a place to stay that is equally as historic. Found on the famous Micklegate street — complete with four Grade-I listed buildings and three medieval churches — this apartment sits within a building that dates back to the fifteenth century. Nowhere is this fact more obvious than in the wooden ceiling beams in the living area and the timber frames seen in other rooms. Despite these prominent period features, the bulk of the interior is actually quite modern, with cleansingly white walls, en vogue wooden floorboards and a sleek white kitchen. It's a lovely place to return to after a day of learning about the city's interesting past. Five minutes' walk in one direction will take you to Micklegate Bar and the city walls, while the same amount of time in the opposite direction will see you reach the museum at Fairfax House

Modern, colourful and supremely comfortable, this apartment on the west side of the River Ouse is an excellent base from which to explore the best of York. Inside the home, it’s all sumptuous soft furnishings in the living space and sleek mod-cons in the kitchenette. Head through to the bedroom and you’ll find a hotel-quality bed that ensures a blissful night’s sleep. 

After a cup of Yorkshire tea and a hunk of local Moggy cake, pull on your comfiest shoes and hit the streets. The famous Jorvik Viking Centre and medieval Shambles are less than a fifteen-minute walk from your doorstep. In times gone by, it was farmyard animals that called this building home. However, in the years since, the hosts — one of whom used to be a joiner — have converted the space into a gorgeous rural escape. The high ceilings remain, but little else is recognisable. The stark white walls and wooden floors accentuate the bountiful amounts of natural light streaming in through the glass doors and there's a log burner for after the sun's gone down. Until that point, however, there are a couple of outdoor spaces in the wraparound garden, which feature alfresco seating and a charcoal barbecue. If this gives you a bit of inspiration to spend a little time outside the house, you're in a superb location to enjoy nature. The Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in just over twenty minutes in the car, while the North York Moors National Park take around forty. The city of York sits twenty minutes' drive in the opposite direction, as well.

This stunning York townhouse with a basement cinema and games room is located immediately off Bishy Road (voted Britain’s Best High street). The house sits right by the ancient walls and it's just an eight-minute walk to the city centre. 

Arriving at the house, you’re greeted with a freshly-baked cake and all the essentials for a cuppa. You can then snuggle up on one of the sofas in front of the wood-burning stove, or if it’s sunny sit out on the bistro seating in the private south-facing courtyard. In the bedroom, it's all about the finer details with an Egyptian cotton towel for each guest, pocket sprung mattresses, and original fireplaces adding a touch of Georgian charm. 

The basement was once a pub cellar and has been transformed into a private, cosy cinema room and small games room with foosball. It is the ideal spot to wind down in the evening along with Netflix and a library of books. 

CVII Nunnery Lane

Affectionally known as Bishy Road to locals, Bishopthorpe Road is home to an award-winning collection of independent shops and is the frequent venue for street parties. It's a great place to stay near if you want to see a more authentic side of York and as luck would have it, this house sits on a side street just off the famous thoroughfare. We can't really find anything to fault with the interior — the long, open living space on the ground floor is bright and welcoming thanks to a big bay window on one side and glass doors on the other. Go through these and you'll be greeted by a courtyard with seating for alfresco feasts in the summer months. For want of a better word, it's all very homely, which is exactly what you want when visiting a new city. If you fancy a jaunt into the historic centre, you can be on the other side of the River Ouse in under ten minutes on foot.
