Quietly removed from York’s centre in a residential neighbourhood north of the city, this home will suit those looking to escape the crowds. While the pared-back, neutral interiors aren’t anything to write home about, the double-height ceilings, exposed beams, and sweet twin bedroom on the mezzanine bring plenty of character. And outside, the suntrap terrace garden is a nice touch for evening drinks. If time is on your side, take the riverside walk into York’s centre along the River Ouse (a lazy forty-five-minute stroll). Or hop on the bus (located two minutes from your door) or the bike tracks, and you’ll be there in no time.

In times gone by, it was farmyard animals that called this building home. However, in the years since, the hosts — one of whom used to be a joiner — have converted the space into a gorgeous rural escape. The high ceilings remain, but little else is recognisable. The stark white walls and wooden floors accentuate the bountiful amounts of natural light streaming in through the glass doors and there's a log burner for after the sun's gone down. Until that point, however, there are a couple of outdoor spaces in the wraparound garden, which feature alfresco seating and a charcoal barbecue. If this gives you a bit of inspiration to spend a little time outside the house, you're in a superb location to enjoy nature. The Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in just over twenty minutes in the car, while the North York Moors National Park take around forty. The city of York sits twenty minutes' drive in the opposite direction, as well.

If you’re in York for culture, history, and plenty of pub trips, then this home couldn’t be any more perfectly placed. You’ll be living a two-minute walk from York Minster, and just three from the Theatre Royal, York Art Gallery, and the watering holes of Stonegate. This ancient street, where the house is located, was once the medieval route into the city from the north. But today, it’s your route to luxe living in the city centre. A former jewellery shop, the quaint brick building still has quirky features and a creative soul. As soon as you step inside, the striking decor is sure to capture your imagination. Floor tiles with a star pattern give the space a Moorish vibe, an exposed brick alcove shows how the home has retained traditional architecture, but then modern elements such as the charcoal-grey kitchen cabinets bring you back to the 21st-century. Up in the bedroom, a funky, plant-patterned feature wall sits in another stairway alcove, and a bright-red velvet headboard brings a regal edge to proceedings. Pour a glass of champagne, open the sash window and peer out at the awe-inspiring views of the spires of York Minster.

Restaurants, cafes, gastropubs and old-world taverns are all a stone's throw away. Located right by the magnificent York Minster, this 18th-century townhouse enjoys a quiet yet central location. Families and friends alike will settle right in here and pets are welcome to join you, but thanks to its many stairs, low windows and trip hazards, young children will need supervision at all times. There is space to sit out with a drink or an alfresco meal in the small courtyard garden – this is overlooked by surrounding buildings and may not feel fully private. Self-check-in makes arrival easy and convenient, though the nearest parking spot is a short walk away. We think the best way to explore the area is on foot though, so having a car here isn't a necessity.

Bursting with character, this home is a truly unique place to stay in the historic city of York. With plenty of inside space, and the added bonus of a brilliant outdoor area, it's a wonderful spot to spend a long weekend or more.  

The house retains many of its original features, from the high ceilings and wooden floors to the big bay window with its charming shutters. On chilly evenings, you can curl up next to the wood-burning stove and enjoy some local snacks from the welcome hamper kindly provided by your host. The stylish royal blue dining room is ideal for long, lavish dinners, and on sunny days you might prefer to fire up the barbeque for an alfresco feast. And, if you fancy a nightcap, your host has even set up a tiki bar in the garden – cheers to that. 

From here, you just need to cross the River Ouse to arrive at York's bustling city centre. Indulge in some retail therapy in the independent boutiques on The Shambles, one of the most unique shopping streets in the country – it's just twelve minutes away. Afterwards, pop over to the impressive York Minster and stroll through the Museum Gardens before enjoying a pint of local ale in one of the nearby pubs.

And thanks to its privileged setting beside the quiet riverbanks, you can be sure of a peaceful night's sleep here.

If you're looking for a unique place to stay in the city of York, look no further. This former malthouse has been converted into a fantastic holiday home, with plenty of character that will please even the most discerning of guests. 

The Grade-II listed building dates back to the 19th century, and you can admire the traditional equipment still on show today. However, there is plenty of modern charm here too – you'll love the comfy sofa and bright green kitchen where you can cook up your favourite dishes. After a delicious meal at the stylish dining bench, you can head downstairs to the games room for some fun. Challenge your guests to a round of pool, or simply chill out on the beanbags as you plan your itinerary for the following day.

This Grade II listed home may be modern by York’s standards (Georgian, in fact) but it’s still got bags of character. The location is tough to beat – on the banks of the Foss River, tucked in amongst the trendy, global restaurants and boutique coffee shops of Walmgate. York’s historic attractions are at your fingertips with the stunning York Minster a seven-minute walk down atmospheric old streets, and the Jorvik Viking Centre a three-minute stroll. Inside, old sash windows let in plenty of natural light and you’ll find a stylish medley of slate grey and duck-egg blue keeping things contemporary. The cosy living room has plenty to entertain you after a day exploring the city (even an X-Box for rainy days) and the open-plan kitchen keeps the place spacious and sociable. Come bedtime, a queen-size bed awaits for a sound sleep.

On sunny days, admire the ancient stonework from your small patio, savouring a glass of wine as the evening draws to a close. It's an unparalleled view and we adore it – morning, noon or night, you'll want to spend every second dining alfresco and soaking up the views. The interior is modern and stylish, with lots of space to spread out and unwind. Sink into the squishy L-shaped sofa, do a spot of work from one of the two desks and whip up a meal in the pastel-coloured kitchen, which has everything you'll need for cooking. But when you want to explore your surroundings, you're just a ten-minute walk from York Minster, nine from the famous Betty's Tea Rooms and six from Shambles Market. Whip up breakfast in the gadget-ladened kitchen then gather your ensemble at the dining table for a lazy morning feast. Curl up on the plush sofa with a cuppa and a good book – there's Netflix at the ready too, if that's more your style. Or sneak back to bed in the boutique-style bedrooms with freshly brewed coffee and open up the Juliet balcony doors. Wherever you choose to be, those bird's eye views of river life and the city's rooftops will be right there.

Affectionally known as Bishy Road to locals, Bishopthorpe Road is home to an award-winning collection of independent shops and is the frequent venue for street parties. It's a great place to stay near if you want to see a more authentic side of York and as luck would have it, this house sits on a side street just off the famous thoroughfare. We can't really find anything to fault with the interior — the long, open living space on the ground floor is bright and welcoming thanks to a big bay window on one side and glass doors on the other. Go through these and you'll be greeted by a courtyard with seating for alfresco feasts in the summer months. For want of a better word, it's all very homely, which is exactly what you want when visiting a new city. If you fancy a jaunt into the historic centre, you can be on the other side of the River Ouse in under ten minutes on foot.

Modern, colourful and supremely comfortable, this apartment on the west side of the River Ouse is an excellent base from which to explore the best of York. Inside the home, it’s all sumptuous soft furnishings in the living space and sleek mod-cons in the kitchenette. Head through to the bedroom and you’ll find a hotel-quality bed that ensures a blissful night’s sleep. 

After a cup of Yorkshire tea and a hunk of local Moggy cake, pull on your comfiest shoes and hit the streets. The famous Jorvik Viking Centre and medieval Shambles are less than a fifteen-minute walk from your doorstep. Enjoy a mosey around York Minster, reached in twelve minutes, then stroll around the peaceful Museum Gardens. When you’re ready for something to eat, Micklegate, with its selection of bars and restaurants, is just footsteps away.

Set in the city centre, just a minutes’ walk from The Shambles, this charming apartment resides in a historic building – the birthplace of Joseph Rowntree. From the beautiful engineered oak flooring to the contemporary-chic furnishings and luxe details (like 500 thread count bedding, a 65-inch TV with 180+ digital channels and Neff and Bosch appliances), this home has been lovingly curated to give you a stylish, comfortable stay. 

Pour yourself a welcome gin and tonic and make yourself comfortable on the living room’s plush sofas as you look out onto views of nearby York Minster. These privileged views are enjoyed from every room in the apartment – not least of all the stunning bedrooms. With two sleek porcelain-tiled showers – one of which is an en-suite – offering rainfall showers and heated mirrors, you’ve got everything you need to experience the city in sumptuous fashion. 

When it comes to exploring, you couldn’t be better placed either. Explore the historic Shambles (a three-minute walk), stroll along the York City Walls (a five-minute walk), and visit York Minster up close, just seven minutes away on foot. With plenty of restaurants, bars and cafés nearby too, there’s no end to the enjoyment in store.

If you’re staying in York, seeing the spires of the 13th-century York Minster Cathedral from your window is akin to an Eiffel Tower view in Paris. The largest of its kind in Northern Europe, this magnificent structure is well worth a visit – just a ten-minute walk from this duplex apartment. Despite such historic surroundings, the interiors of this home are tastefully modern. As you enter through the hall, the first thing you’ll notice is a full-wall mural showing you a printed map of the entire city. After you’ve found your bearings, head onwards to the bright lounge. There’s a certain Scandi vibe created by the furnishings and colour scheme – we particularly love the yellow rug, plus matching throws and cushions. The elegant, modern armchairs make for an inviting perch where you can enjoy a proper Yorkshire brew on arrival (you might even find this in the welcome hamper from your host). But on a sunny day, you might want to take your tea out to your private balcony. Open up the French doors from the lounge, where the playful yellow colour scheme continues with a cute metal dining set – anyone for a slice of cake too?

Whether you’re looking for history, culture, or culinary delights, York has it all. In this wonderfully walkable city, you’ll pass by ancient landmarks, then turn a corner onto a bustling street of shops, restaurants, and pubs. But after you’ve sampled a few local beers and ales, you’ll need a spot to rest your weary head. How does a serene, waterside apartment on the River Foss sound to you? It’s just a nine-minute walk from York Castle, fifteen from York Art Gallery, and a minute away from dining and drinking spots. We love the setting, on the ground floor of a stand-out riverside building – a converted, warehouse-style block with red brickwork and tons of sash windows across its facade. The interiors are just as gorgeous, but lean more towards modern than traditional. In the bright living space, you’ve got your own huge window and fabulous exposed brickwork at one end, then a stylish, understated kitchen at the other. In between, there’s a certain Scandi feel from the furniture, but you’re brought back to York with the colourful canvas of the historic cityscape above the plush sofa. Get the kettle on (before you get too comfy).

Hoppy Ale

In a city with as rich a heritage as York, it only makes sense to find a place to stay that is equally as historic. Found on the famous Micklegate street — complete with four Grade-I listed buildings and three medieval churches — this apartment sits within a building that dates back to the fifteenth century. Nowhere is this fact more obvious than in the wooden ceiling beams in the living area and the timber frames seen in other rooms. Despite these prominent period features, the bulk of the interior is actually quite modern, with cleansingly white walls, en vogue wooden floorboards and a sleek white kitchen. It's a lovely place to return to after a day of learning about the city's interesting past. Five minutes' walk in one direction will take you to Micklegate Bar and the city walls, while the same amount of time in the opposite direction will see you reach the museum at Fairfax House

A Spoonful of Sugar

You'll find this cosy home only a fifteen-minute walk from the majestic York Minster. It's tucked away on a quiet street lined with pretty cottages, with the restaurants, pubs and shops in the city centre just a short stroll away. Open the front door and step into the charming living room. We love the repurposed fireplace – now a decorative statement piece – and the sheer amount of light spilling through the windows. Kick-off your shoes and snuggle up on the squishy sofa, watching your favourite films – the host provides complimentary Netflix and Amazon Prime accounts, so you'll have plenty of options. Come dinnertime, pad into the country-style kitchen and rustle up a meal – it's stocked with cookware and cutlery to make cooking a breeze. On sunny days, take your fare into the lovely courtyard and dine alfresco. Although it's small, we think the wisteria-covered walls and pretty flowerboxes turn it into a tranquil, whimsical space to unwind with a glass of wine as the day slowly draws to a close.

On The Brownlow

You’ll find this contemporary, light-filled home in the village of Fulford, a five-minute drive from the centre of historic York. Inside, the place is open-plan and breezy, with cleverly placed skylights and white-washed walls adding a fresh and sleek feel throughout. The minimalist living area was our favourite spot to relax and the spacious patio is a treat on sunny summer mornings. Make your favourite meals in the bright kitchen or nip into the city to sample the tasty selection of bars, restaurants, tea rooms and cafes. If you fancy stretching your legs, we recommend following the River Ouse into York – it’ll take you around forty minutes if you go at a leisurely pace. Spend an afternoon exploring the web of medieval streets, admiring the soaring Minster’s Gothic architecture and walking the time-worn City Walls. At the end of another eventful day, sup real ale in oak-panelled taverns that have been serving revellers since the Tudor times.

Take It Steady

This apartment has an ace up its sleeve — a huge wraparound balcony that has a superb view of the most famous building in the city, York Minster. There's space to sit out here with this wonderful backdrop, but don't worry if it's too cold, as the floor-to-ceiling windows running around the length of the living space ensures that it's possible to take it in while sitting indoors. 

The interior takes the best parts of 1970s design — the earthy colour palette, patterned wallpaper and natural materials — to create a space that's retro without feeling dated. For the cherry on the cake, the kitchen has plenty of surface space for cooking up a storm and a bathtub upstairs will help you relax after a long day of sightseeing, which is welcomingly easy to do from the central location. Five minutes' walk will get to Museum Gardens, while the same amount of time in the opposite direction will see you reach the medieval shopping street, York Shambles.

Fifteen Kings

There's a timeless quality to this home, just a short walk from the city centre. Part of a period terrace, it's as pretty as a picture – both inside and out. You're spoilt for choice here, with two sitting rooms to choose between. Both super comfortable and classically furnished, there's the front room with its arched window and cosy sofas, and the former dining room with its armchairs and log burning stove. Giving the option of letting the youngsters have their own living space, it's a handy arrangement made possible by the kitchen extension. In this modern space, you'll have an excellent, fully kitted-out kitchen (hello range cooker!) and a dining area that opens out to the charming little courtyard. In the summer evenings, it's the perfect spot for dinner and drinks outside. With two good size bedrooms and a luxurious bathroom with a freestanding bathtub, we didn't think this warm, welcoming home could get any better. But it can – you're welcome to bring along your pet too.

Quiet despite its busy locale, this home will have you in the centre of York, surrounded by pubs and cafes. A stay in York deserves a home that radiates history from its seams. This 16th-century apartment fits right in with the narrow, medieval streets around it and has an enviable view of York Minster. The building itself is a typical black and white, timber-clad home and inside you’ll find a potted history of the rooms from their design.
