There’s a small outdoor patio area too which isn’t the most scenic spot, but there’s a bench that’ll do quite nicely for sipping your morning coffee or evening glass of wine alfresco. When you’re ready to venture out, save yourself the headache of parking and walk twelve minutes instead to explore York city centre, where York Minster, The Shambles and the York City Walls await.

If you’re in York for culture, history, and plenty of pub trips, then this home couldn’t be any more perfectly placed. You’ll be living a two-minute walk from York Minster, and just three from the Theatre Royal, York Art Gallery, and the watering holes of Stonegate. This ancient street, where the house is located, was once the medieval route into the city from the north. But today, it’s your route to luxe living in the city centre. A former jewellery shop, the quaint brick building still has quirky features and a creative soul. As soon as you step inside, the striking decor is sure to capture your imagination. Families and friends alike will settle right in here and pets are welcome to join you, but thanks to its many stairs, low windows and trip hazards, young children will need supervision at all times. There is space to sit out with a drink or an alfresco meal in the small courtyard garden – this is overlooked by surrounding buildings and may not feel fully private. Self-check-in makes arrival easy and convenient, though the nearest parking spot is a short walk away. We think the best way to explore the area is on foot though, so having a car here isn't a necessity.

This stunning York townhouse with a basement cinema and games room is located immediately off Bishy Road (voted Britain’s Best High street). The house sits right by the ancient walls and it's just an eight-minute walk to the city centre. 

Arriving at the house, you’re greeted with a freshly-baked cake and all the essentials for a cuppa. You can then snuggle up on one of the sofas in front of the wood-burning stove, or if it’s sunny sit out on the bistro seating in the private south-facing courtyard. In times gone by, it was farmyard animals that called this building home. However, in the years since, the hosts — one of whom used to be a joiner — have converted the space into a gorgeous rural escape. The high ceilings remain, but little else is recognisable. The stark white walls and wooden floors accentuate the bountiful amounts of natural light streaming in through the glass doors and there's a log burner for after the sun's gone down. Until that point, however, there are a couple of outdoor spaces in the wraparound garden, which feature alfresco seating and a charcoal barbecue. If this gives you a bit of inspiration to spend a little time outside the house, you're in a superb location to enjoy nature. The Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in just over twenty minutes in the car, while the North York Moors National Park take around forty. The city of York sits twenty minutes' drive in the opposite direction, as well.

In a city with as rich a heritage as York, it only makes sense to find a place to stay that is equally as historic. Found on the famous Micklegate street — complete with four Grade-I listed buildings and three medieval churches — this apartment sits within a building that dates back to the fifteenth century. Nowhere is this fact more obvious than in the wooden ceiling beams in the living area and the timber frames seen in other rooms. We can't really find anything to fault with the interior — the long, open living space on the ground floor is bright and welcoming thanks to a big bay window on one side and glass doors on the other. Go through these and you'll be greeted by a courtyard with seating for alfresco feasts in the summer months. For want of a better word, it's all very homely, which is exactly what you want when visiting a new city. If you fancy a jaunt into the historic centre, you can be on the other side of the River Ouse in under ten minutes on foot.

Set in the city centre, just a minutes’ walk from The Shambles, this charming apartment resides in a historic building – the birthplace of Joseph Rowntree. But when you want to explore your surroundings, you're just a ten-minute walk from York Minster, nine from the famous Betty's Tea Rooms and six from Shambles Market. With restaurants, pubs and plenty of local shops to browse, you'll have more than enough to keep you busy – and the private off-road parking is the icing on the cake.

Start the day off with a morning stroll around Rowntree Park – it's just across the river – then make your way towards the restaurants, cafes, pubs and eateries and enjoy lunch in York's bustling city centre. Afterwards, visit Shambles Market for a bit of shopping or, if you consider yourself a history buff, have a look at the many museums and landmarks in town.

Embrace New-York-loft style in old York with this stylish studio apartment. Formerly a flour mill on the River Foss, big warehouse-style windows look out over the water and exposed brick keeps an old industrial feel. A sunny seat in the window makes for the perfect reading nook, and the pull-down, Murphy bed adds a bit of lavish ingenuity. The kitchen has everything you need to whip up a quick meal, but you’re in the very centre of York here, so you may never touch the utensils and appliances (apart from the pod coffee machine) as restaurants, pubs and cafés are all on your doorstep. This place puts you in the perfect position to explore everything historic York has to offer – the famous medieval street, The Shambles, is an eight-minute walk, the gothic splendour of York Minster is fifteen minutes on foot and the somewhat undiscovered, yet impressively preserved Merchant Adventurer’s Hall is just a five-minute stroll away.  

The Grain House

A stay in York deserves a home that radiates history from its seams. This 16th-century apartment fits right in with the narrow, medieval streets around it and has an enviable view of York Minster. If that’s not a testament to how central you are, buzzing tearooms, trendy restaurants and cosy pubs are all on your doorstep. The building itself is a typical black and white, timber-clad home and inside you’ll find a potted history of the rooms from their design. Wood-panelled walls whisper of the 19th-century, while the gnarled old timber beams of the 16th-century show through too. The living room is a regal space, like the drawing rooms of times gone by, and has big sash windows, high ceilings and an upright piano for an evening sing-along.
