Located right by the magnificent York Minster, this 18th-century townhouse enjoys a quiet yet central location. Families and friends alike will settle right in here and pets are welcome to join you, but thanks to its many stairs, low windows and trip hazards, young children will need supervision at all times. There is space to sit out with a drink or an alfresco meal in the small courtyard garden – this is overlooked by surrounding buildings and may not feel fully private. Self-check-in makes arrival easy and convenient, though the nearest parking spot is a short walk away. We think the best way to explore the area is on foot though, so having a car here isn't a necessity.

This ancient street, where the house is located, was once the medieval route into the city from the north. But today, it’s your route to luxe living in the city centre. A former jewellery shop, the quaint brick building still has quirky features and a creative soul. As soon as you step inside, the striking decor is sure to capture your imagination. Floor tiles with a star pattern give the space a Moorish vibe, an exposed brick alcove shows how the home has retained traditional architecture, but then modern elements such as the charcoal-grey kitchen cabinets bring you back to the 21st-century. Up in the bedroom, a funky, plant-patterned feature wall sits in another stairway alcove, and a bright-red velvet headboard brings a regal edge to proceedings. And, if you fancy a nightcap, your host has even set up a tiki bar in the garden – cheers to that. 

From here, you just need to cross the River Ouse to arrive at York's bustling city centre. Indulge in some retail therapy in the independent boutiques on The Shambles, one of the most unique shopping streets in the country – it's just twelve minutes away. The interior is modern and stylish, with lots of space to spread out and unwind. Sink into the squishy L-shaped sofa, do a spot of work from one of the two desks and whip up a meal in the pastel-coloured kitchen, which has everything you'll need for cooking. But when you want to explore your surroundings, you're just a ten-minute walk from York Minster, nine from the famous Betty's Tea Rooms and six from Shambles Market. Curl up on the plush sofa with a cuppa and a good book – there's Netflix at the ready too, if that's more your style. Or sneak back to bed in the boutique-style bedrooms with freshly brewed coffee and open up the Juliet balcony doors. Wherever you choose to be, those bird's eye views of river life and the city's rooftops will be right there.

It's a great place to stay near if you want to see a more authentic side of York and as luck would have it, this house sits on a side street just off the famous thoroughfare. We can't really find anything to fault with the interior — the long, open living space on the ground floor is bright and welcoming thanks to a big bay window on one side and glass doors on the other. Go through these and you'll be greeted by a courtyard with seating for alfresco feasts in the summer months. For want of a better word, it's all very homely, which is exactly what you want when visiting a new city. If you fancy a jaunt into the historic centre, you can be on the other side of the River Ouse in under ten minutes on foot.

This stylish home is a brilliant option for a York getaway. Just a twenty-five-minute walk along the river from the iconic spires of York Minster, you'll be well-placed to explore this historic city. Start the day off with a morning stroll around Rowntree Park – it's just across the river – then make your way towards the restaurants, cafes, pubs and eateries and enjoy lunch in York's bustling city centre. Afterwards, visit Shambles Market for a bit of shopping or, if you consider yourself a history buff, have a look at the many museums and landmarks in town.

Following your jam-packed day of sightseeing, make your way back to this lovely homestead and get comfortable in the living area. The plump L-shaped sofa is perfect for sprawling – plop yourself down and enjoy a glass of wine before preparing a delicious dinner together in the kitchen. We can't help but swoon over the character features, from the hardwood floors to the stained glass front door. Every room oozes warmth and cosiness. 

On winter evenings, the wood-burner in the dining area is a welcome reprieve from the frosty air, while the charming conservatory is the ideal spot to while away a few hours with an engrossing book. We also adore the small private garden – during the summer, bring out a chair and dine alfresco under the Northern sunshine.

It's beautifully furnished, with warm grey tones throughout and bright pops of colour, courtesy of the blue velvet sofa and chair. The vast leather-covered corner seat by the dining table is a standout feature, as are the skylights, which ensure plenty of natural light illuminates this loft-style living space. A high table and stool have been thoughtfully placed by the window so that you can enjoy wonderful views across the Minster Gardens with an afternoon cup of tea. The cosy bedroom has plenty of storage for unpacking your belongings, plus a dreamy king-size bed and a lovely dressing area – perfect for getting ready for a night on the tiles. And when you're not experiencing the best of York's eclectic nightlife, you're less than a five-minute stroll from the iconic York Minster and half a mile from the city walls.

Destination York

In times gone by, it was farmyard animals that called this building home. However, in the years since, the hosts — one of whom used to be a joiner — have converted the space into a gorgeous rural escape. The high ceilings remain, but little else is recognisable. The stark white walls and wooden floors accentuate the bountiful amounts of natural light streaming in through the glass doors and there's a log burner for after the sun's gone down. Until that point, however, there are a couple of outdoor spaces in the wraparound garden, which feature alfresco seating and a charcoal barbecue. If this gives you a bit of inspiration to spend a little time outside the house, you're in a superb location to enjoy nature. The Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in just over twenty minutes in the car, while the North York Moors National Park take around forty. The city of York sits twenty minutes' drive in the opposite direction, as well.

A recently converted landmark building within two minutes' walk of York Minster, the period exterior of this place doesn't give away the sleek, modern apartment inside. Offering all the comforts of home, you'll feel like a local in no time. With everything so new it's practically sparkling, you'll have a sociable, open-plan living space with a comfy sofa and a smart dining table, along with a high-spec contemporary kitchen area with all the kit you'll need to cook at home. Both bedrooms are stylish and each has a dedicated bathroom so there won't be any need to queue for the shower in the morning. Little luxuries include welcome treats, underfloor heating in the bathrooms and a funky remote control backlight behind the TV – to set the mood for the evening. The location couldn't be better either, with a walk of fewer than ten minutes into the city centre.

The interiors are just as gorgeous, but lean more towards modern than traditional. In the bright living space, you’ve got your own huge window and fabulous exposed brickwork at one end, then a stylish, understated kitchen at the other. In between, there’s a certain Scandi feel from the furniture, but you’re brought back to York with the colourful canvas of the historic cityscape above the plush sofa. Quietly removed from York’s centre in a residential neighbourhood north of the city, this home will suit those looking to escape the crowds. While the pared-back, neutral interiors aren’t anything to write home about, the double-height ceilings, exposed beams, and sweet twin bedroom on the mezzanine bring plenty of character. And outside, the suntrap terrace garden is a nice touch for evening drinks. If time is on your side, take the riverside walk into York’s centre along the River Ouse (a lazy forty-five-minute stroll). Or hop on the bus (located two minutes from your door) or the bike tracks, and you’ll be there in no time.

The minimalist living area was our favourite spot to relax and the spacious patio is a treat on sunny summer mornings. Make your favourite meals in the bright kitchen or nip into the city to sample the tasty selection of bars, restaurants, tea rooms and cafes. If you fancy stretching your legs, we recommend following the River Ouse into York – it’ll take you around forty minutes if you go at a leisurely pace. Spend an afternoon exploring the web of medieval streets, admiring the soaring Minster’s Gothic architecture and walking the time-worn City Walls. At the end of another eventful day, sup real ale in oak-panelled taverns that have been serving revellers since the Tudor times.

Although it's small, we think the wisteria-covered walls and pretty flowerboxes turn it into a tranquil, whimsical space to unwind with a glass of wine as the day slowly draws to a close.

There’s a certain Scandi vibe created by the furnishings and colour scheme – we particularly love the yellow rug, plus matching throws and cushions.
